DISCONNECT SPARK PLUG WIRE FROM SPARK PLUG AND
ATTACH IT TO RETAINING POST (see Figure 6 on Page 3).
INSTALL ENGINE BRAKE CABLE AND STARTER ROPE:
BRAKE CABLE (see Figure 2):
Attach engine brake cable to brake mechanism as shown.

STARTER ROPE:
A. Depress mower control bar (sea Figure 3) against mower
handle and hold it in this position.
E. Pull at least 2 feet of starter rope out of starter and tie a slip knot
at starter to.prevent starter rope from rewinding back into
starter.

A. POSITION EQUIPMENT SO ENGINE IS LEVEL.
B. Clean area around oil fill plug (sea Figure 1).
C. Remove oil fill plug and dipstick.
D. Wipe dipstick clean, insert it into oil fill hole and tighten
securely.
E. Remove oil fill plug and check oil level. If level is not up to
=FULL" mark on dipstick, add recommended oil, until it is.
POUR SLOWLY. Wipe dipstick clean each time oil level is
checked. DO NOT FILLABOVE "FULL" MARK ON DIPSTICK.
F. Replace oil fill plug and tighten securely.
See =MAINTENANCE" section for any future oil level and oil •
change instructions (see Page 3).

ENGINE:

The carburetor on your engine has been completely a_tjusted
at the factory. When starting a cold engine, push redprimer
bulb firmly with your thumb 5 tlmee, allowing primer bulb
to return completely to odginal position between p_shes.
Repeat the above for each starter operation as necessary.
NOTE: DO NOT USE PRIMER "IF,

ENGINE AFTER A SHORT SHUTDOWN.

filter from flange. Discard filter.

Replacement filters are available at any Sears Roebuck and Co.
(or Sears Canada, Inc.) Service Center. To install new filter,
proceed as follows:

H. Wipe up any spilled oil and/or gasoline.

If it is difficult to reach the oil drain plug, drain fuel.
Remove oil fill plug and tip mower on its side. Drain oil
into a suitable container,

porcelain is cracked. For replacement use Champion
RJ19LM.

Check electrodes gap with wire feeler gauge and set gap at
.030 if necessary.

found on stabilizer container. Run engine at least 10
minutes after adding stabilizer to allow it to reach

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency "EPA*), the California Air Resources
Board ("CARB _) and Seam, Roebuck and CO. are pleased to explain the Federal and
COlifomla Emission COntrol Systems Warranty on your new utility or lawn and
garden equipment engine. In California, new 1995 and later utilityutili
and lawn and
garden equipment engines must be designed, built and equipped to meet the State's
stdegent anti-stung standards. In other states, new 1997 and later model year
engines must be designed, built and equipped, at the time of sale, to meet the U.S.
EPA regulations for small non-road engines. Seam, Roebuck and Co. will warrant
the emissio_ control system on your utility or lawn and garden equipment engine for
the pednds of Ume listed below, provided there has been no abuse, neglect,
unapproved modification, or improper maintenance of your utility or lawn and garden
equipment engine.

redlacement as requ=red maintenance in the Owner's Manual shall be
warranted for the ECS warranty Period. If any such part fails dudng the
ECS Warranty Period, it shall be repaired or replaced by Sears, Roebuck and
Co. according to Subeec',ion 4 below. Any such part repaired or raplaced
under the ECS Warranty shall be warranted for any remainder of the ECS
Warranty Period.

defective in matadals or workmanship, the part will be repaired or raplaced by Sears,

Any w'drrantad, err!issions-related part which is scheduled only for regular
inspection as specified in the Owner's Manual shall be warranted for the ECS
Warranty Period. A statement in such written insthJctions o the effect of
"repair or replace as necessary', shall not reduce the ECS Warranty Period.
Any such part repaired or rap_aced under the ECS Warranty shall be
warranted for the remainder of the ECS Warranty Period.

3. Any warranted,emiaslans*raiated
part which is scheduledforrepfacementas
required maintenancein theOwneYsManual,shallbe warrantedforthe period
of time pdorto the first scheduledreplacementpointforthat part. ff the part
fails prior tothe first scheduledreplacement the part shallbe repairedor
replacedby Sears, Roebuckand CO.accordingto Subsection4 below. Any
suchemisslans-relatnd
part repairedor replacedunderthe ECS Warranty,
shall be warranted forthe remainderof the ECSWarrantyPehodpriorto the
first scheduledrel_acemeofpointfor such emisaions-raiated
part.

RESPONSIBILmES

AS the utility or lawn and garden equipment engine owner, you are responsible for
the performance of the required maintenance listed in your Owner's Manual, but
Sears, Roebuck and P-_, will,not deny warranty solely due to the lack of receipts or
for your fadure to provide written evidence of the performance of all scheduled
maintenance.

4.
As the utility or lawn and garden equipment engine owner, you should, however, be
aware that Sears, Roebuck and Co. may deny you warranty coverage if your utility
or lawn and garden equipment or a part thereof has failed due to abuse, neglect,
improper maintenance or unapproved modifications.

Repair or replacement of any warranted, emissions*related part under this
ECS Warranty shall de performed at no charge to the owner at a Sears,
Roebuck and CO. Authorized Service Outlet.

5. The owner shall nof de chargad for dlageostic labor which leads to the
determination that a part covered by the ECS warranty is in fact defective
provided that such diagnostic work is performed at a Sears, Roebuck and
Co. Authorized Service Outlet.

You are responsibla for presenting your utility or lawn and garden equipment engine
to a Sears, Roebuck and CO. Authorized Service Outlet as soon as a problem
exists. The warranty epa rs should be completed in a reasonable amount of time, •
not to exceed 30 days.

6. Sears, Roebuck and Co. shall be liable for damages to other original engine
components or approved modifications proximately caused by a failure
under warranty of an emisalon-raiated part covered by the ECS Warranty.

Warranty service can be arranged by contacting either a Sears Roebuck and Co.
Authorized Service Outlet, or by coofacting Sears, Roebuck and Co. at 1-800-4737247.

7. Throughout the ECS Warranty Peqod, Sears, Roebuck and CO. shall
maintain a supply of warranted emission-related parts sufficient to meet the
expected demand for such emission-related pads.

IMPORTANT NOTE
This warranty statement explains your dghts and obligations under the Emission
Control System Warranty (=ECS Warranty") which is provided to you by Sears,
Roebuck and Co. pursuant to California law. See also the Sears, Roebuck and Co.
Limited Warranties for Sears, Roebuck and Co. which is enclosed therewith on a
separate sheet and also is provided to you by Sears, Roebuck and Co. The ECS
Warranty applies only to the emission control system of your new engine. To the
extent that there is any conflict in terms between the ECS Warranty and the Seam,
Roebuck and Co. Warranty the ECS Warranty shall apply except m any
circumstances in which the Seats, Roebuck and Co. Warran
may provide a longer
warranty pphod. Both the ECS Warranty and the Seam, RoetYDUCk
and Co. warranty
desodbe imbenant hghts and obligations with respect to your new engine.
Warranty service can only be pertormed by a Sears, Roebuck and Co. Authorized
Service Outlet. At the time of requesting warranty service evidenCe must be
presented of the date of sale to the original purchaser, The purchaser shall bey any
charges for making service calls and/or for transporting the products tP and from
the place where the inspection and/or warranty work is performed. The purchaser
shall be responsible for any damage or loss incurred in connection with the
transportation of any engine or any part(s) thereof submitted for inspection and/or
warranty work.

system and other emission-related assemblies.

8. Any Sears, Roebuck and CO. authorized and approved emission-related
replacement part may be used in the performance of any ECS Warranty
maintenance or repair and will be provided without charge to the owner. Such
use shall not reduce Seam, Roebuck and Co, ECS Warranty obligations.
9. Unapproved add-on or modified pads may not be used to modify or repair a
Seats, Roebuck and Co. engine. Such use voids this EC$ Warranty and
shall de sufficient grounds for disallowing an ECS Warranty claim. Sears,
Roebuck and Co, shall not be liable hereunder for failures of any warranted
pads of a Seam, Roebuck and Co. engine caused by the use of such an
unapproved add-on or modified part.
