Never use "stale" gasoline left over from last season or stored for long periods. Page f DISCONNECT SPARK PLUG WIRE FROM SPARK PLUG AND ATTACH IT TO RETAINING POST (see Figure 6 on Page 3). INSTALL ENGINE BRAKE CABLE AND STARTER ROPE: BRAKE CABLE (see Figure 2): Attach engine brake cable to brake mechanism as shown. STARTER ROPE: A. Depress mower control bar (sea Figure 3) against mower handle and hold it in this position. E. Pull at least 2 feet of starter rope out of starter and tie a slip knot at starter to.prevent starter rope from rewinding back into starter. 181-1179-1f BEFORE STARTING BEFORE (Continued) C, Slide rope stop onto starter rope and feed starter rope through rope guide on mower handle (see Figure4). If there is any slack, pull more starter rope through starter handle and relocate left hand knot to eliminate slack. i_ WHEN ENGINE IS RUNNING OR HOT. DO NOT SMOKE WHEN NEVER FILL FUELTANK INDOORS. Pull left hand knot into starter handle. I H. Positionropestop 2 to 3 inchesfrom starterand fasten it to starter rope by gripping it with pliers and forcing staple ,_ throughstarter ropeuntilstaple is even withoutsideof'rope stop. I FUEL EQUIPMENT EXPANSION.WIPEANY FUEL SPILLAGE FROM ENGINE AND BEFORE STARTING ENGINE. E. (_) CHECK ANY UQUERED PETROLEUM (LPG) OR NATURAL GAS FUEL SYSTEM MUST BE LEAKPROOFAND MEETALLAPPUCABLE CODES AND REGULATIONS. OIL LEVEL: IMPORTANT: _) NEVER RUN ENGINE UNLESS OIL LEVEL IS BETWEEN "FULL" AND "ADD" MARKS ON DIPSTICK. CHECK i_iA CHECK OIL LEVEL OFTEN DURING ENGINE BREAK-IN. NEVER RUN ENGINE UNLESS OIL FILL PLUG IS TIGHTENED SECURELY INTO OIL FILL HOLE. A. POSITION EQUIPMENT SO ENGINE IS LEVEL. B. Clean area around oil fill plug (sea Figure 1). C. Remove oil fill plug and dipstick. D. Wipe dipstick clean, insert it into oil fill hole and tighten securely. E. Remove oil fill plug and check oil level. If level is not up to =FULL" mark on dipstick, add recommended oil, until it is. POUR SLOWLY. Wipe dipstick clean each time oil level is checked. DO NOT FILLABOVE "FULL" MARK ON DIPSTICK. F. Replace oil fill plug and tighten securely. See =MAINTENANCE" section for any future oil level and oil • change instructions (see Page 3). B. THE FOLLOWING: BE SURE EQUIPMENT IS IN NEUTRAL GEAR WITH I CLUTCHES, BELTS, CHAINS AND SAFETY SWITCHES J DISENGAGED. (FOLLOW EQUIPMENT MANU- I FACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS.) THIS SHOULD PLACE ANY SAFETY SWITCHES N SAFE STARTING PosmoN. ENGINE: The carburetor on your engine has been completely a_tjusted at the factory. When starting a cold engine, push redprimer bulb firmly with your thumb 5 tlmee, allowing primer bulb to return completely to odginal position between p_shes. Repeat the above for each starter operation as necessary. NOTE: DO NOT USE PRIMER "IF, O RESTART ENGINE AFTER A SHORT SHUTDOWN. D. E. B. Operate mower controlto release engine brake. C. DISCONNECT SPARK PLUG WIRE FROM SPARK PLUG AND ATTACH IT TO RETAINING POST (see Figure 6). ,_kB. NEVER ENGINE WITH FUEL IN TANK INDOORS OR IN STORE ENCLOSED, POORLY VENTILATED AREAS, WHERE FUEL FUMES MAY REACH AN OPEN FLAME, SPARK OR PILOT LIGHT AS ON A FURNACE, WATER HEATER,CLOTHES DRYER OR OTHER GASAPPLIANCE. SPARK PLUG NEVER RUN ENGINE WITHOUT COMPLETE INSTALLED ON ENGINE. AIR CLEANER I A. Tum cover to the left (counterclockwise) and remove it and filter from flange. Discard filter. a. Clean cover and flange thoroughly. Insert new filter into cover. C. D, Position cover and filter against flange with tab on cover inserted into lower left corner of slot in flange. E, Push cover firmly against flange and turn it to the right (clockwise) as far as it will go. Be sure retainers are locked around flange. TURN COVER TOTHELEFT (COUNTERCLOCKWISE)TO REMOVE SPARK PLUG WIRE RETAINING POST (see Figure 7): Replacement filters are available at any Sears Roebuck and Co. (or Sears Canada, Inc.) Service Center. To install new filter, proceed as follows: IS STOPPED: fF CLEANER Replace filter once a year or more often if used in extremely dusty or dirty conditions. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN OR OIL FILTER. See mower manufacturer's instructions. ENGINE Replace oil drain plug and tighten securely. Fill oil sump with recommended oil. See "OIL & FUEL RECOMMENDATIONS" and =CHECK OIL LEVEL" on Page 1. F. Replace oil fill plug and tighten securely. G. Connect spark plug wire to spark plug. H. Wipe up any spilled oil and/or gasoline. NOTE: If it is difficult to reach the oil drain plug, drain fuel. Remove oil fill plug and tip mower on its side. Drain oil into a suitable container, A (_) AFTER OIL: 1). A WARM NOTE: If enginedoes not start,repeat instructionsA, B, C and D until itstarts. (_) CHANGE Change oil after first two (2) operating hours and every 25 operating hours thereafter, more often if operated in extremely dusty or dirty conditions. Change oil while engine is still warm from recent running. DISCONNECT SPARK PLUG WIRE FROM SPARK PLUG AND ATTACH IT TO RETAINING POST (see Rgure 6). B. This engine complieswithall currentAustralianand New Zealand limitations regarding electromagneticinterference. IF ENGINE IS TO BE UNUSED PREPARE AS FOLLOWS: Check spark plug yearly or every 100 operatinghours. FOR 30 DAYS OR MORE, A. Clean area aroundspark plug. B. Remove and inspectspark plug. C. Replace spark plug if electrodes are pitted, burned or porcelain is cracked. For replacement use Champion RJ19LM. A. D. NOTE: A resistor spark plug must be used for replacement. Check electrodes gap with wire feeler gauge and set gap at .030 if necessary. 0 DRAIN FUEL INTO APPROVED CONTAINER OUTDOORS, AWAY FROM OPEN FLAME. BE SURE ENGINE IS COOL DO NOT SMOKE. E. Install spark plug, tighten securely. B. ELECTRODES (_ DRAIN --_:LAIN .030 GAP Figure8 _) IMPORTANT: Frequentlyremove any grass clippings,dirtand debrisfrom coolingfins, air intakescreenand leversand linkage (see Figure 1). This will help ensure adequate cooling and correct engine speed. (_) OIL CYLINDER BOLTS AND ATTACHMENTS, AND KEEP THESE ITEMSJ TIGHTENED. l BORE: A. Removesparkplugand pourone (1) ounce(30 ml) ofengine oil intospark plug hole. B. Cover spark plug hole with a rag. C. Crank engine over, slowly, several times. CRANKING ENGINE OVER SLOWLY. AVOID SPRAY FROM SPARK PLUG _ ADJUSTMENTS D. HOLE WHEI_ Replace spark plug. FACTORY (_) CLEAN SETTINGS ARE SATISFACTORY FOR MOST APPLICATIONS AND CONDITIONS. IF ADJUSTMENTS ARE NEEDED, PROCEED AS FOLLOWS: GENERAL If you think your carburetor needs adjusting, see your nearest SEARS, ROEBUCK AND CO. (OR SEARS CANADA, iNC.) SERVICE CENTER, Engine performance should not be affected at altitudes up to 7,000 feet. For operation at higher elevations, contact your nearest SEARS, ROEBUCK AND CO. (OR SEARS CANADA, INC.) SERVICE CENTER. SPEED NEVER TAMPER WITH ENGINE GOVERNOR FACTORY SET FOR PROPER ENGINE ENGINE: Remove any clippings, did, or chaff from extedor of engine. CARBURETOR _) ENGINE OIL: Changeoilifit hasnot beenchangedinthe lastthree(3) months. See "CHANGE OIL"instructionsin "MAINTENANCE" sectionon Page 3. (_) CHECK ENGINEAND EQUIPMENTOFTEN FOR LOOSENUTS,I ADJUSTMENTS. Removeallgasolinefromcarburetorand fueltankto prevent gum deposits from forming on these parts and causing possiblemalfunctionof engine. CHANGE SYSTEM: DO NOT MAKE UNNECESSARY SYSTEM: Run engine untilfuel tank isemptyand enginestopsdue to lackof fuel. NOTE: Fuel stabilizer (such as STA-BIL) is an acceptable alternative in minimizing the formation of fuel gum depositsdudng storage. Add stabilizerto gasolinein fuel tank or storage container.Alwaysfollow mix ratio found on stabilizer container. Run engine at least 10 minutes after adding stabilizer to allow it to reach carburetor. / COOLING FUEL WHICH IS I SPEED. I Justas yourautomobileneedsprofessionalmechanicalmaintenance from timetotime,sodoesyourCraftsmanengine.Replacementofthe spark plug and air cleaner is made necessary by NORMAL use. ProfessionalAir-CooledEngine Service is as close as your nearest Sears Roebuckand Co. (or Sears Canada, Inc.) Service Center. OVERSPEEDING ENGINE ABOVE FACTORY HIGH SPEED I SE'I-RNG CAN BE DANGEROUS. CHANGING OE ENGINEGOVERNED SPEED WILL VOID ENGINE WARRANTY. See "STARTING" instructions in this manual. Spark plugwire disconnectedfrom spark plug. Connect SPARK PLUG WIRE to SPARK PLUG. Spark plug fouled. Remove SPARK PLUG and clean it. See "SPARK PLUG"instructionsin "MAINTENANCE"sectionin this manual. Spark plugpomelaincracked. Install new spark plug. Insufficientfuel. Fill FUEL TANK per "BEFORE STARTING" instructions. Water or dirt in fuel. Drain FUEL TANK and re-fillwith clean,fresh gasoline. See "BEFORE STARTING" instructions in this manual. Impropercarburetoradjustment Adjustcarburetor(ifapplicable). In California, new 1995 and later utilityutili and lawn and garden equipment engines must be designed, built and equipped to meet the State's stdegent anti-stung standards. In other states, new 1997 and later model year engines must be designed, built and equipped, at the time of sale, to meet the U.S. EPA regulations for small non-road engines. Seam, Roebuck and Co. will warrant the emissio_ control system on your utility or lawn and garden equipment engine for the pednds of Ume listed below, provided there has been no abuse, neglect, unapproved modification, or improper maintenance of your utility or lawn and garden equipment engine. 2. Free from defacts in materials and workmanship which, at any time dudeg the ECS Warran_nty Pedod, will cause a warranted emissions-related part to fail to be identlsai in all matadai respects to the part as described in the engine manufacturer's application for certification. C. The ECS warranty onlypertainsto emisslans-raiateqpartson yourengine,as follows: 1. Any warranted, ernissions-raiated gads which are not scheduled for redlacement as requ=red maintenance in the Owner's Manual shall be warranted for the ECS warranty Period. If any such part fails dudng the ECS Warranty Period, it shall be repaired or replaced by Sears, Roebuck and Co. according to Subeec',ion 4 below. Any such part repaired or raplaced under the ECS Warranty shall be warranted for any remainder of the ECS Warranty Period. MAN g FACTURER'S EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM WARRANTYCOVERAGE 2. Emission control systems on 1995 and later model year California utility and lawn and garden eqalpmeof engines are warranted for two_ye_ ears as haralnaRer nofad. In other states, 1997 and later model year engines are also warranted for two years. If, dudng such warranty pedod, any emlsaion-rstated p,ht on your engine is defective in matadals or workmanship, the part will be repaired or raplaced by Sears, Roebuck and Co. Any w'drrantad, err!issions-related part which is scheduled only for regular inspection as specified in the Owner's Manual shall be warranted for the ECS Warranty Period. A statement in such written insthJctions o the effect of "repair or replace as necessary', shall not reduce the ECS Warranty Period. Any such part repaired or rap_aced under the ECS Warranty shall be warranted for the remainder of the ECS Warranty Period. 3. Any warranted,emiaslans*raiated part which is scheduledforrepfacementas required maintenancein theOwneYsManual,shallbe warrantedforthe period of time pdorto the first scheduledreplacementpointforthat part. ff the part fails prior tothe first scheduledreplacement the part shallbe repairedor replacedby Sears, Roebuckand CO.accordingto Subsection4 below. Any suchemisslans-relatnd part repairedor replacedunderthe ECS Warranty, shall be warranted forthe remainderof the ECSWarrantyPehodpriorto the first scheduledrel_acemeofpointfor such emisaions-raiated part. RESPONSIBILmES AS the utility or lawn and garden equipment engine owner, you are responsible for the performance of the required maintenance listed in your Owner's Manual, but Sears, Roebuck and P-_, will,not deny warranty solely due to the lack of receipts or for your fadure to provide written evidence of the performance of all scheduled maintenance. 4. As the utility or lawn and garden equipment engine owner, you should, however, be aware that Sears, Roebuck and Co. may deny you warranty coverage if your utility or lawn and garden equipment or a part thereof has failed due to abuse, neglect, improper maintenance or unapproved modifications. Repair or replacement of any warranted, emissions*related part under this ECS Warranty shall de performed at no charge to the owner at a Sears, Roebuck and CO. Authorized Service Outlet. 5.
