Usecautionwhentillingnear fences,buildingsand underground utilities. Rotatingtines can causepropertydamageor personal injury. Donot overloadmachinecapacityby attemptingto till soil too deep at too fastof a rate. If the machineshouldstart makingan unusualnoiseor vibration, stop the engine,disconnectthe spark plugwire and groundit againstthe engine.Inspectthoroughlyfor damage.Repairany damagebeforestartingand operating. Keepall shields,guards,and safetydevicesin placeand operating properly. Neverpick up or carry machinewhilethe engineis running. Cut the cornersand laythe cartondown fiat. 1. 3. 6. Raisethefine shieldhinge flapassemblyand insertthe depth stakeassemblyin the slot, underthe fineshieldand up through the tine shieldassembly. Insertthe clevispin throughthe fineshieldand depthstake assemblies.Secureit with the cotterpin. Insertthe hex bolt intothe top holeof the depthstakeassembly. Placethe flat washeron the hex boltand threadthe T-knobonto the hex bolt.Tightensecurely.See Figure1. Tip the tiller backdownso that it restson the tines. ASSEMBLING 1. 2. UNIT FROM CARTON THE HANDLE Locatethe upper handleassemblyand handletube assembly. Usingtwo hexscrewsand flangelock nuts securethe handle tube assemblyto the upperhandleassembly.See Figure2. Use the handlebracketto lift and pull the tillerbackwardsto a flat area.Checkthecarton thoroughlyfor looseparts. Extendthe controlcableand lay it on thefloor. Be cardul not to bendor kink the controlcable. Makesurethe handleassemblyis in the highestposition.Referto the OperationSection. 2. Removethecotterpin and T-knobfrom the handleswivelrod. See Figure5. Toomuchtensionmay cause it to break. Be certainto checkthe clutchcableadjustment beforeoperatingthe tiller. 4. Insertthe cable barrelintothe cablebarrel holder,insertthe barreland barrelholder intothe clutchhandleand securewith the hexscrew.See Figure7. with the previouslyremovedhardware.See Figure4. Carefullyengagethe clutchby squeezingclutchleveragainstthe handle.The wheelsshouldspin. 7. If the wheelsdo notspin with thetiller in forward,loosenthe upper nutand adjust by tighteningthe cablea few turnscounterclockwise(whenstandingin theoperator'sposition)and then retightenthe uppernut againstcable bracket.See Figure9. Recheckbothadjustments,and readjustas necessary. 8. NOTE:A secondarycableadjustmentis availableif you reachthe point thatadditionaladjustmentis needed.Movethe nutsat theother end of the cabletowardsthe end of the casing.Thenreadjustthe nuts at the cable bracket. Idler Pulley Rod Checkthe adjustmentof the idler pulleyrodas follows: 1. Disconnectand groundthe sparkplug wireagainstthe engine. Figure 8 2. With the engineoff and theclutch leverdisengaged,shiftthe shift leverto eachforwardmode. 3. Confirmthat the shift leverindicatorbracketdoes not touchthe idler pulleyrod with the clutchleverdisengaged. 4. To readjustthe idler pulleyrod, removethe beltcoveras described underBelt Replacementin the Serviceand Maintenance section. 5. Removethe cotterpin and springwasherfrom theidler pulleyrod. Withthe gear selectionleverin NEUTRAL,startthe engine.Refer to Startingthe Enginein the Operationsection. Standingon the right sideof the tiller,examinethe belt(insidethe beltcover).It shouldnotbe turning. Cotter Pin "_ If the beltturns withoutthe clutchcontrolengaged,unthread the uppernut and adjustit byunthreadinglowernut a fewturns clockwise(whenstandingin the operator'sposition)and then retightenthe upper nutagainstthe cablebracket.See Figure9. / idler PulleyS! Thechokecontrolisfoundon thesideof theengineand isactivatedby movingthe leverto theCHOKEposition.Activatingthe chokecontrol closesthe chokeplateon thecarburetorand aidsin startingtheengine. Theoperationof anytiller can resultin foreignobjectsbeingthrown intothe eyes,which can damageyoureyes severely.Alwayswear I safetyglassesduring operationor whileperforminganyadjustments [or repairs. RECOIL STARTER CONTROL AIR FILTER The air filter is a deviceon the engineair intakethat preventsdust and dirt enteringthe engine. HANDLE This handleis usedto startthe engine. MUFFLER THROTTLE Engineexhaustexitsthe enginevia the muffler. CONTROL ELECTRIC STARTER OUTLET Requiresthe useof a three-prongoutdoorextensioncordand a 120V powersource/walloutlet. ELECTRIC Thethrottlecontrolis locatedon the sideof the engine.It regulatesthe spreadof the engineand will shut off theenginewhen movedintothe STOPposition. STARTER BUTTON Pressingtheelectricstarterbuttonengagesthe engine'selectric starterwhenpluggedintoa 120Vpowersource. Meets ANSi Safety Standards CraftsmanTillersconformto the safety standardof the AmericanNationalStandardsInstitute(ANSI). 11 OiL FiLL CAP & DIPSTICK REAR TINE SHIELD Engineoil levelcan be checkedand oil addedthroughtheoil fill. The rear fine shieldprotectsthe operatorfromflying debriswhilealso smoothingoutfreshlytilled soil. NOTE:This unitwas shippedWITHOUToil in the engine.Oil is includedin the plasticbag packedwith the manualin with the unit. Add theoil as directedin theGas & Oil Fill Up section.Checkthe oil levelbeforeeachoperationto ensureadequateoil is in the engine. Forfurther instructions,referto the stepsin the EngineMaintenance sectionof this manual. SHIFT LEVER/SHIFT BRACKET LEVER INDICATOR SIDE SHIELD The side shieldis usedto maintaincleareven rowsand may be adjustedto one of five differentpositions. TINES Yourfiller's tinesare a series of bladesarrangedon a revolving power-drivenshaft. GAS AND OIL FILL-UP Theshift leveris locatedon the handleassembly,it is usedto select NEUTRAL,REVERSE,or one of the three FORWARDmodesby pullingup or pushingdownon the shiftleverand placingthe shiftlever indicatorbracketin the desiredposition. Oil (one bottle shipped with unit) FirstTime Use 1. 2. Removeoilfilldipstick. With the tilleron levelground,use a funnelto emptyentire contentsof oil bottleprovidedinto theengine. 3. Replaceoil fill dipstickand tighten. Subsequent Uses Onlyusehigh quality detergentoil ratedwith API serviceclassification SF,or SG.Selectthe oil's SAEviscositygradeaccordingto the expectedoperatingtemperature.Followthechart below. 1.
