Readthisoperator'smanualcarefullyinitsentiretybeforeattemptingto

assemblethis machine.Read,understand,andfollowallinstructionson the

Becompletelyfamiliarwith thecontrolsandtheproperuseofthismachine

beforeoperatingit.

Thismachineisa precisionpieceofpowerequipment,nota plaything.

SERVICE

Safe Handling of Gasoline:

Toavoidpersonalinjuryorpropertydamageuseextremecareinhandling

gasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammable andthevaporsareexplosive.

Seriouspersonalinjury canoccurwhen gasolineisspilled on yourselfor your

clotheswhich canignite. Washyourskin andchangeclothesimmediately.

Useonlyanapprovedgasolinecontainer.

Neverfill containersinsideavehicleoronatruckortrailerbedwith aplastic

liner.Alwaysplacecontainerson thegroundawayfromyourvehiclebefore

filling.

Removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruckortrailerandrefuelit on

theground.If thisisnotpossible,thenrefuelsuchequipmentona trailer

with aportablecontainer,ratherthanfromagasolinedispensernozzle.

Keepthenozzleincontactwith therimof the fueltankorcontaineropening

at alltimesuntilfuelingiscomplete.Donotuseanozzlelock-opendevice.

Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipesandothersources

of ignition.

Neverfuelmachineindoorsbecauseflammablevaporswill accumulatein

thearea.

Neverremovegascaporaddfuelwhileengineishotorrunning.Allow

engineto coolat leasttwo minutesbeforerefueling.

Neverover-fillfuel tank.Toallowforexpansionof thefuel,donotfill above

thebottomof thefueltankneck.

Replacegasolinecapandtightensecurely.

Ifgasolineisspilled,wipeit offthe engineandequipment.Movemachineto

anotherarea.Wait5minutesbeforestartingengine.

Neverstorethemachineorfuelcontainernearanopenflame,sparkorpilot

lightason awaterheater,spaceheater,furnace,clothesdryerorothergas

appliances.

Toreducefire hazard,keepmachinefreeofgrass,leaves,orotherdebris

build-up.Cleanupoilorfuelspillageandremoveanyfuel-soakeddebris.

Allowmachinetocoolat least5 minutesbeforestoring.

General Service:

Neverrunanengineindoorsorina poorlyventilatedarea.Engineexhaust

containscarbonmonoxide,an odorlessanddeadlygas.

Beforecleaning,repairing,orinspecting,makecertainthebladeandall

movingpartshavestopped.Disconnectthe sparkplugwire andground

againstthe engineto preventunintendedstarting.

Checkthebladeandenginemountingboltsat frequentintervalsfor proper

tightness.Also,visuallyinspectbladefordamage(e.g.,bent,cracked,

worn)Replacebladewiththeoriginalequipmentmanufacture's(O.E.M.)

bladeonly,listedinthismanual."Useof partswhichdo notmeetthe

originalequipmentspecificationsmayleadto improperperformanceand

compromisesafety!"

Lawnedgerbladesaresharpandcancut.Wrapthebladeorweargloves,

anduseextracautionwhenservicingthem.

Keepallnuts,bolts,andscrewstight to besuretheequipmentis insafe

workingcondition.

Nevertamperwith safetydevices.Checktheirproperoperationregularly.

Afterstrikingaforeignobject,stoptheengine,disconnectthesparkplug

wire andgroundagainsttheengine.Thoroughlyinspectthelawnedgerfor

anydamage.Repairthedamagebeforestartingandoperatingthelawn

edger.

Neverattemptto makea wheeladjustmentwhiletheengineis running.

Manycomponentsonyournewedgercanwearwithcontinueduse.For

safetyprotection,frequentlycheckalledgercomponentsandreplace

immediatelywith originalequipmentmanufacturer's(O.E.M.)parts

only,listedinthismanual."Useof partswhichdo notmeettheoriginal

equipmentspecificationsmayleadto improperperformanceand

compromisesafety!"

Donotchangetheenginegovernorsettingoroverspeedtheengine.The

governorcontrolsthemaximumsafeoperatingspeedof theengine.

Maintainorreplacesafetyandinstructionlabels,asnecessary.

Observeproperdisposallawsandregulationsforusedgas,oil,etc..Improper

disposalof fluidsandmaterialscanharmtheenvironment.

Accordingto theConsumerProductsSafetyCommission(CPSC)andtheU.S.

EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA),thisproducthasanAverageUseful

Lifeofseven(7)years,or 70hoursof operation.Attheendof theAverage

UsefulLifehavethemachineinspectedannuallybyanauthorizedservice

dealerto ensurethatall mechanicalandsafetysystemsareworkingproperly

andnotwornexcessively.Failureto do socanresultinaccidents,injuriesor

death.

DO NOT MODIFY ENGINE

Toavoidseriousinjuryor death,do not modify engine inanyway. Tampering

with thegovernorsetting canleadto arunawayengineandcauseit to

operateat unsafespeeds.Nevertamperwith factory setting of engine

governor.

NOTICE REGARDING EMiSSiONS

Engineswhich are certifiedto complywith Californiaandfederal EPA

emissionregulationsfor SORE(Sinai[Off RoadEquipment)arecertified

tooperateonregularunleadedgasoline,and mayincludethefollowing

emissioncontrolsystems:EngineModification (EM),OxidizingCatalyst(0C),

SecondaryAir injection(SAI)andThreeWayCatalyst(TWC)ifsoequipped.

SPARK ARRESTOR

Thismachineisequippedwith aninternalcombustionengineandshould

not beusedonor nearany unimprovedforest-covered,brushcoveredor

grass-coveredlandunlesstheengine'sexhaustsystemisequippedwith a

sparkarrestormeeting applicablelocalor statelaws(if any).

If asparkarrestor isused,it shouldbemaintained ineffective working order

bytheoperator.In theStateof Californiathe aboveisrequiredby law(Section

4442 of the CaliforniaPublicResourcesCode).Otherstatesmayhavesimilar

laws.Federallawsapply onfederallands.

WARNING-- ROTATINGBLADES

Keep hands and feet away from rotating blade.

Keep bystanders, pets, and children at least 75 feet from the machine while it is in operation. Stop

machine if anyone enters the area.

4. HooktheZendofthedepthcontrolcableintotheholeonthedepthcontrol

Starter Rope

1. Locatetheropeguideandwingknobfoundinthemanualbag.Usingthe

wingknob,securebutdonottightenthe ropeguideto the right sideof the

upperhandleasshownin Figure5.

2. Standbehindtheedgerandholdthebladecontrolagainsttheupperhandle.

3. Gentlypullthe starterropeoutof theengine.

TheedgerbladeWiLLrotatewhen thestarter ropeispulled.

flOTE:Thestarterropewill notpulloutof the engineunlessthe blade

control(referto Figure5) isdepressedagainstthe upperhandle.

4. Slipthestarterropethroughthetopof the ropeguide.Tightenthewing

knobwhichsecuresthe ropeguideto the upperhandle.

Thecurbheightadjustmentleverisfoundonthe rearportionof theedger.When

placedinanapplicablenotch,it aidsinstabilizingtheedgerwhileedginggrass

alongacurb.

BladeDepthControl Lever

Thebladedepthcontrolleverislocatedontheright sideof theupperhandle.It is

usedtocontrolthedepthof thecut. Thefurtherforwardthebladedepthcontrol

leverismoved,thedeeperinto thesoiltheedgerbladewill cut.

BevelAdjustmentLever

Thebeveladjustmentleverislocatedonthefront, left portionofthe edger,behind

theedgerblade.It isusedto varytheangleof theedgerbladebetweenoneof three

positionsforedging/trenchingor bevelededging.

RecoilStarter

Therecoilstarterisusedtostart theengine.

Primer

Theprimerisusedto pumpgasintothecarburetorandaid instartingtheengine.

Useit to startacoldengine,butdonotuseit to restartawarmengineafterashort

shutdown.

Meets ANSISafety Standards

CraftsmanEdgersconformto the safetystandardof theAmericanNationalStandardsInstitute(ANSI).

Besurenooneotherthan theoperatorisstanding nearthe lawnmower

while starting engineoroperating mower.Neverrunengineindoorsor

inenclosed,poorlyventilated areas.Engineexhaustcontainscarbon

monoxide,anodorlessanddeadlygas.Keephands,feet, hairand loose

clothing away from anymoving parts on engineandJawnmower.

ToStart Engine

1. Movethebladedepthcontrolleverbackto theSTARTpositioninthe

adjacent(top)notch.

2. Pushthe primerthreetimes.SeeFigure8. Donotprimeto restartawarm

engine.

NOTE:Ifyoupushtheprimertoomanytimes,excessivefuelwill floodthe

carburetorandtheenginewill bedifficult to start.

3. Standingbehindtheedger,depressthebladecontrolandholdit againstthe

upperhandlewithyourleft hand.

Thisbladecontrolmechanismis asafety device.Neverattempt to bypass

itsoperation.

4. Withyourright hand,grasprecoilstarterhandleandpullropeslowlyuntil

resistanceisfelt, thenpullwith arapid,continuous,full armstroke.See

Figure8. Keepingafirm gripon thestartercordhandle,letthe roperewind

slowly.Repeatuntil enginecranks.Lettheroperewindeachtimeslowly.

Keepa firm grip onthe cordhandleandmaintain sufficient backward

tension onthe cordat all timesto prevent rapidstarter cordretraction

(kickback).Rapidretraction canpull armand handtoward the engine

fasterthan youcan let go,and result inbrokenbones,fractures,bruisesor

sprains.

ToStop Engine

1. Releasebladecontrolto stoptheengineandblade.

Edging

Rotatingcutting blademaythrow objectscausingpersonalinjury.Keep

areaclearof bystandersanddo notoperatewithout guardsinplace.

Donot lowerblade if bladeis overconcrete,asphalt,rocksorthe like. Blade

canstrikesupportingsurface,resultingin personalinjury or property

damage.

Tobeginedging,proceedasfollows:

1. Moveedgerto anareato beedged,makingsurethattheleft rearwheelison

ahardsurfaceandthebladeisovertheareato becut. SeeFigure9.

2. Withthebladecontrolsqueezedagainstthe handlein theoperating

position,makea passalongareato beedgedbeforeproceedingto the next

notch.Thefurtherforwardthat thebladedepthcontrolleverismoved,the

deeperor lowerthebladewill cut intotheground.Severalpassesmaybe

necessaryto obtainthedesireddepthof cut.Donotlowerblademorethan

onedepthnotchat atimewithout makingapass.

3. Forbestresults,proceedslowlyalongthe pathbeingedged.Slowlymove

edgerbackandforththroughcuttingarea,againmakingsureto keepthe

left rearwheelonthehardsurfaceandthebladeinthecuttingpath,closeto

butnot touchingthe edgeof thehardsurface.

4. Onceyouhavefinishededgingselectedarea,raisethebladedepthcontrol

leverbackintotheSTARTposition,moveto thenextareato beedged,and

proceedagainfromstep1.

EdgingAlongACurb

Theright rearwheelof theedgercanbeloweredintooneof fivepositionsto ease

thetaskof edgingalongacurb.Toadjusttheheightof curbwheel,proceedas

follows:

Lowertherightrearwheelbymovingthecurbheightadjustmentlever

cutting pathfor suchthingsaslayingwirefor landscapelighting.

Disconnectthe sparkplugwire andgroundagainstthe enginebefore

performing the following steps.

Theedger bladeissharp.Wearleatherwork glovesto protectyour hands

whenworking around the edgerblade.

Usetwo wrenches(onewrenchto preventhexbolt headfromspinningand

theotherto unthreadtheflangenut)to removeflangenutthatsecures

edgerblade,leavingthe edgerbladeinplace.SeeFigure12.

3. Securewiththeflangenutremovedearlier.Useatorquewrenchto tighten

theflangenutto between37foot-lbs,and50foot-lbs.

NOTE:Makecertainthatdrivebeltisseatedcorrectlyonbladespindleandthatit

isridingsmoothlyonspindlesheaves(seeFigure16)andisnotpinchedbetween

them.Repeatfirst threestepsif beltispinched.

6. Reinstallthespindlesheavesbeltguardwith theselftappingscrews

Repairorreplacementof anyWarrantedPartwill beperformedat nochargeto

4. ClaimsandCoverageExclusions

WarrantedPartswhicharenotoriginalSearspartsor becauseof abuse,neglect

orimpropermaintenanceassetforth intheSearsEngineWarrantyPolicy.Sears

isnot liableto coverfailuresofWarrantedPartscausedbytheuseofadd-on,

5. Maintenance

AnyWarrantedPartwhichis notscheduledforreplacementasrequired

maintenanceor whichisscheduledonlyforregularinspectionto the effectof

"repairorreplaceasnecessary"shallbewarrantedasto defectsforthewarranty

period.AnyWarrantedPartwhichisscheduledfor replacementasrequired

maintenanceshallbewarrantedasto defectsonlyfortheperiodof timeup
