TACT SPARK PLUG TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL STARTING WHEN SETTING UP, TRANSPORTING,
ADJ USTING OR MAKING RE,PAIRS.

OPERATOR
SAFETY
• Always wear safety eye protection.
• Always wear heavy long pants, long sleeves, boots and
gloves. Do not go barefoot or wear sandals, short
pants, short sleeves. Being fully covered helps to protect you from pieces of toxic pfants thrown by the
blade.
• Secure hair so it above shoulder length. Secure loose
clothing or jewelry. Clothing with loosely hanging ties,
straps, tassels, etc. can be caught in moving pans.
Do not operate this unit when you are tired, il! or under
the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
• Wear hearing protection ff you use this unit for more
than 1-1/2 hours per day.
• Never start or run the engine inside a closed room or
building. Breathing exhaust fumes can kill.
• Keep handles free of oiland fuel.
• if situations occur which are not covered in this manual, use care and good judgement.

UNIT MAINTENANCE/SAFETY
• Look for and replace damaged or loose parts before
each use. Look for and repair fuel leaks before use.
Keep the unit in good working condition.
• Make sure the unit is maintained and assembled correctly as listed in this manual.
• Make carburetor adjustments with the blade supported
to prevent it from contacting any object. Hold the unit
by hand.
• Keep others away when making carburetor adjustments.

• Do not smoke or allow smoking near fuel or the unit or
while using the unit.
• Wipe up all fuel spills before starting engine.
• Move at least 10 feet (3 meters) away from fueling site
before starting engine.
• Stop engine and allow unit to cool before removing_fue!
cap.
CUTTING SAFETY
• Inspect the area to be cut before each use. Remove
objects (rocks, broken glass, nails, wire, string, etc.)
whichcan become entangled in the blade.
• Keep others including children, animals, bystanders
and helpers a minimum of 15 feet (5 meters) away.
Stopthe engine immediately if you are approached.
• Always keep the engine on the right-hand side of your
body.
• Hold the unit firmly with both hands.
• Keep firm footing and balance. Do not over-reach.
• Keep the blade below waist level.
• Do not raise the engine above your shoulder.
• Keep all parts of your body away from the blade and
muffler when engine is running.
• Use only for jobs explained in this manual.

TRANSPORTING

AND STORAGE

• Stop the unit before transporting.
• Allow the engine to cool, and secure the unit before
storing or transporting in a vehicle.
• Empty the fuel tank before stodng or transporting the
unit. Use up any fue! left in the carburetor by starting
the engine and letting theengine run until it stops.
• Store unit and fuel in an area where fuel vapors cannot
reach sparks or open flames from water heaters, electric motor or switches,furnaces, etc.
• Store unit so the blade cannot accidentally cause
injury.
• Store the unit out of the reach of children.

• Use only quality SEARS accessories and replacement
parts as recommended for this unit.
• Have all maintenance and service not explained in tills
manual performed by your SEARS Ser_ce Center.

FUEL SAFETY
• Mix and pour fuet outdoors.
• Keep away from sparks or flames.
• Use a container approved for fuel.

OPERATION
HOWTO

USE YOUR HEDGE TRIMMER

NOTE' Verity the throttle trigger stays in the advanced
position.
• Squeezing the throttle trigger will release the fast idle
setting. If the throttle trigger is squeezed accidentally
during starting, it will be necessary to reset throttle lock.

STOPPING YOUR ENGINE
• Move start/stop switch to the "STOP" position.
• If engine does not stop, pull choke knob out fully.

THROTTLE CONTROL GROUP (Fig. 2)
THROTTLE LOCKOUT
• The throttle lockout prevents unintentional actuation of
the throttle trigger.
• You must depress the throttle lockout with the palm of
your hand before actuating the throttle trigger.
THROTTLE TRIGGER
• The throttle trigger allows for variable control of engine
speed.
• The throttle trigger is actuated by the index fingeron your
right hand. (After the throttle lockout is depressed).
THROTTLE LOCK
• The throttle lock allows the faster engine speeds during
starting.
• The throttle lock is engaged by the following steps:
- Grasp the rear handle and depress the throttle lockout.
- Squeeze the throttle trigger fully and hold.
- Depress the throttle lock w_thyour forefinger and hold.
- Release your grip on the throttle trigger and throttle
lockout.

CHOKE
• The choke is set by pulling the choke lever out .fully for
coldor refueled engine starts.
PRIMER BULB
• The primer bulb is used to circulate fuel to the carburetor.
• The primer bulb is activated by pressing on it with your
thumb.

STOPPING
"fOUR ENGINE
• Move the ONIOFF switch to the OFF position.
• If engine does not stop, move the choke lever to the full
choke position.

The throttle trigger controlsthe engine speed.
NOTE: The blade should stop when the throttle trigger is
released and the engine returns to idlespeed.

NOTE: Do not try to cut stems larger than 3/8" thick.
TOP cu'n'ING
• For new or young growth: When trimming new or
young growth, use a wide, sweeping motion. Figure 5A.
A slight,downward tilt of the cutting blades in the direction of motion gives the best cutting results.
• For older, thicker growth: Trim older, thicker growth
by using a sawing motion. Figure5!3.
• For precise, level cuts: If a precisely level cut is
desired, stretch a piece of string across the length of
the hedge. Guide the cutting blades slowly across the
top of the string.Figure 6.
SIDE cu'n'ING
• When tdmming the sides of the hedge, begin at the
bottom and cut upward, tapering the hedge inward at
the top., Figure 6' (inset). Cutting in this method will
leave the body of the hedge narrower at the top. This
shape will expose more of the hedge, resulting in more
uniform growth.

WHICH CAN DAMAGE THE BLADE,
BECOME ENTANGLED, OR BE THROWN
CAUSING A SERIOUS HAZARD.

ALWAYS WORK GOING AWAY FROM PEOPLE AND SOLID OBJECTS SUCH AS
WALLS, LARGE STONES, TREES, AUTOMOBILES, ETC.
ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION. NEVER
LEAN OVER THE BLADE. ROCKS OR
DEBRIS CAN RICOCHET OR BE THROWN
INTO EYES AND FACE AND CAUSE BLINDNESS OR OTHER SERIOUS INJURY.
• Allow the cutting blades to reach full speed before
entering the material to be cut.
• Always work going away from people and solid objects
such as walls, large stones, trees, automobiles,etc.
• If blade stalls, immediately stop the engine. Make sure
the ON/OFF switch is off, the spark plug is disconnected, and the blade has stopped moving before clearing
ioammeddebris from the cutting blade. Inspect the blade
r damage and have _trepaired or replaced as needed.
° To stop the engine, move the ON/OFF switch to the
OFF position.
o Always keep the air vents clean. Stop the unit, make
sure the cutting blade has completely stopped moving,
and disconnect the spark plug before cleaning.

CRAFTSMAN 40:1 2-cycle engine oil (AIR-COOLED) is
strongly recommended. This oil is specially blended with
fuel stabilizers for increasedfuel stability(extends fuel life
up to 5 times longer) and reduced smoke.

INFORMATION IN THE SAFETY RULES
SECTION ON PAGE 2 OF THIS MANUAL
BEFORE YOU BEGIN.

If CRAFTSMAN 2-cycte engine oil (AIR-COOLED) is not
available, use a good quality 2-cycle engine oil (AIRCOOLED) that has a recommended fuel mix ratio of 40:1.

GASOLINE
The two-cycle engine on this product requires a fuel mixture of regular unleaded gasoline and a high quality 40:1
2-cycle engine oil (AIR-COOLED) for lubrication of the
bearings and other moving parts.The correct fuel/oil mixture is 40:1 (see Fuel Mixture Chart). Too little oil or the
incorrect oil type will cause poor performance and may

Gasoline and oil must be premixed in a clean approved
fuel container. Always use fresh regular unleaded gasoline.
This engine is certified to operate on unleaded gasoline.
IMPORTANT: Experience indicates that alcohol blended
fuels called gasohol (or using ethanol or methanol) can
attract moisture, which leads to oil/gas separation and
formation of acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage. To
avoid engine problems, the fuel system should be emptied before storage for 30 days or longer. Drain the gas
tank, then run the fuel out of the carburetor and fuel lines
by starting the engine and letting it run until it stops. Use
fresh fuel next season. See STORAGE instructions for
additional information. Never use engine or carburetor
cleaner products in the fuel tank or permanent damage
may occur.

These oils do not have proper additives for 2-cycle AIRCOOLED engines and can cause engine damage.

GASOLINE

AND OIL MIXTURE

Mix gasoline and oil as follows:
• Consult chart for correct quantities.
• Do not mix gasoline and oil directly in the unit's fuel
tank.
FOR ONE GALLON:
• Pour 3,2 ounces of high quality,40:1 2-cycle engine oil
(AIR-COOLED) into an empty, approved one gallon
gasoline container.
• Add one gallon of regular unleaded gasoline to the gallon container, then securely replace the cap.
- Shake the container.
• The mixture is now ready for use. Fuel stabilizer can be
added at this time if desired;follow mixing instructions
on the label.

NOTE: Fuel containers may hold more than the specified
amount. If too much gasoline is in the container, the

FUEL STABILIZER
Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative in minimizing
the formation of fue! gum deposits dudng storage. Add
stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storage container.
Always follow the fuel tank or storage container. Always
follow the fuel mix ratio found on the stabilizer container.
Run engine at [east 5 minutes after adding stabilizer to
allow the stabilizer to reach the carburetor. You do not
have to drain the fuel tank for storage ff you are using
fue! stabilizer.
CRAFTSMAN 40:1 2-cycle engine oil (AIR-COOLED) is
specially blended with fuel s_abilizers, if you do not use
this Sears oil, you can add a fuel stabilizer (such as
CRAFTSMAN No. 33500) to your fuel tank.

• Pull the starter rope sharply until the engine runs, but
no more than 6 pulls.
NOTE: If the engine has not started after 6 pulls (at half
choke), check to make sure the ON/OFF switch and the
choke lever are in the proper positions. Then, move the
choke lever to the full choke position and press the primer
bulb 6 times; pull the starter rope 2 more times. Move the
choke lever to half choke and pull the starter rope until the
engine runs, but no more than 6 more pulls.

Flooded engines can be started by placing the ON/OFF
switch in the ON position and the choke lever in the off
choke position;then, pull the rope to clear the engine of

RECOMMENDATIONS

The warranty on this hedge trimmer does not cover items
that have been subjected to operator abuse or negligence. To receive full value from the warranty, the operator must maintain hedge trimmer as instructed in this
manual.
Some adjustments will need to be made periodically to
propedy maintain your unit.

REPLACE FUEL FILTER (Fig. 14 & 15)
" The fuel filter should be replaced after each season.
Never operate your unitwithouta fuel filter. Be careful not
to damage fuel line while removingthe fuel filter.
• Run fuel tank dry of fue! before proceeding with this
step,
• Remove fuel cap and allow it to hang to side of motor.
• Using a smatl pair of needle nose pliers, grasp fuel cap
retainer, holding it in tank opening and pull out.
• With cap out of tank, use a small section of bent wire
similar to that shown in the illustrationto catch fuel line
and slowly pull from tank. When fuel filter appears in
opening, grasp with fingers and remove from tank.
• Once filter is out of tank, hold fuel line close to fuel filter. Remove fuel filter by twisting and pulling at the
same time.
• Replace fuel filter.
• Reverse process for installation.

Very small adjustments can affect engine performance. It is
important to tum the screw a very small amount per adjustment

FUEL SYSTEM
Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in the

INTERNAL ENGINE
• Remove spark plug and pour 1 teaspoon of 40:1
2-cycle engine oil (AIR-COOLED) through the spark
plug opening. Slowly pull the starter rope 8 to 10 times
to distributeoil to inner engine surfaces.
• Replace spark plug with a new one of the recommended
type and heat range. Refer to "Product Specifications."
• Clean air filter. Refer to =Customer Responsibilities."
• Re-install all covers and hardware removed for access;
tighten all screws and fasteners.
• Check entire unit for loose screws, nuts, and bolts.
Replace any damaged, broken, or worn parts.
- Lightly oil external metal surface to prevent rust from
forming.
o Use fresh fuel having the proper gasoline to oil ratio at
the beginning of the next season.

OTHER
• Do not store gasoline from one season to another.
• Replace your gasoline can if your can starts to rust.
Rust and/or dirt in your fuel system will cause problems.
• Store your unit in a well ventilated area and covered, if
possible, to prevent dust and dirt accumulation. Do not
cover with plastic. Plastic cannot breathe and will
induce condensation and eventual rust or corrosion.
IMPORTANT: Never cover unit while engine and exhaust
areas are still warm.

GASOLINA
Et motor de dos tiempos en este producto requiem una
mezcla de combustible de gasolina regular sin plorno y un
acelte para motorde 2 tiempos de buena calidad (ENFRIADO
POR AIRE) para lubricar los cojinetes y otras piezas m6viles.
La proporci6n correcta de combustible/aceite es 40:1 (ver
Cuadro de la mezcla de combustible). Muy poca cantidad de
aceite o tipo incorrecto de aceite causardn funcionamiento
deficiente y puede causar el sobrecalentamiento y
agarrotamiento del motor.
Gasolina y el aceite deben mezclarse previarnente en un
recipiente limpio aprobado para gasolina. Siempre usar
gasolina regular sin plornofresca.

ACEITE PAPA MOTOR DE 2 TIEMPOS
Se recomienda el uso del aceite para motor de 2 tiempos
"CRAFTSMAN 40:1" (ENFRIADOS POR AIRE). Este aceite
estd especialmente mezclado con estabilzadores de combustible para incrementar la estabilidad del combustible
(prolonga la duraci6n del combustible hasta 5 veces mds) y
reduce el despredimiento de humo.
Si no se tiene disponibte aceite para motor de 2 tiempos
CRAFTSMAN, usar un buen aceite para motor (ENFRIADO POR AIRE) de 2 tiempos que tenga la mezcla de combustible de 40:1 recomendada.

La garantfa en este protege guarnecedor no cubre
detalles que hart estado expuesto a abuso o negligencia
de operador. Para recibir Ilenar valor de la garant_a, el
operador tiene que rnantener proteger guarnecedor
como instruido en este manual.
Es necesado hacer algunos ajustes pedSdicamente para
mantener en buenas condiciones esta m_.quina.
Todos los ajustes indicados en la secci6n de mantenimiento y ajustes en este rr_nual deben hacerse por Io
menos cada estaci6n.
• Una vez al aSo, cambiar la bujia y el filtro de aire. Una

LIMPIAR Y REVISAR EL TAMIZ DEL
SUPRESOR DE CHISPAS (Fig. 12)
Durante el uso de la unidad, se forman dep6sitos de carbono
en el silenciador yen el tamiz dei supresor de chispas (si instalado); dstos se deben eliminar para evitar peligros de incendio
y para que el desempefio del motor no se vea afectado.
La timpieza requerida es cada 25 horas de operaci6n o anualmente, cualquiera clue sea menor.
Reemplazar el tamiz del supresor de chispas si _ste estuviera
roto.

LA BUJIA (Fig. 13)

Cambiar la bujia cada afio para asegurar que el motor arranque
fdcilmente y funcione mejor. La distancia entre electrodos debe
mdelr .025".

Et filtro de combustible deberia estar remplazado despues de cada
estaci6n. Nunca opera su unidad sin un fiftrode combustible. Sea
cuidadosa de no Ifnea de combustible de da_o mientras retira el
filtro de combustible.
• Agotar el combustible dei tanclue antes de proceder con este
paso.
• Quitar la tapa del combustible y dejada colganclopor e! tado del
motor.
• Con la ayuda de un par de alicates puntiagudos, agarrar el
retenedor de la tapa del combustible de la parte grande, sujetdndolo en la boca del tanque, y tirarlo hacia afuera.
- Con la tapa fuera del tanque, usar un trozo peque_o de alambre
doblado parecido a! que se muestra en la ilustraci_n para pescar
la manguera de Combustible y lentamente tirarla fuera del
tanque, Cuando aparezca el filtro de combustible en la boca del
tanque, agarrarlo con los dedcs y sacado.
• Una vez que el filtro este fuera del tanque, agarmr la manguera
de combustible cerca del cuello del filtro con el pulgar -y dedo
indice de la mano izquierda mientras se toma el cuerpo del filtro
con eJ pulgar y dedo indice de la mano derecha. Retorcer el filtro con la mano derecha mientras se la desconecta de la
manguera.
• Reemplace filtro de combustil_le.

puede dafiar permanentemente

PREPARACION
• Utilice una mezcla de comustible fresca. Vea el Fueling secciona.
• Comiencs la mdquina. El adorno protege per 3 minutes
calentar mdquina. La m_quina tiene que ser en temperatura
operaUva antes de que ajustes de carburador pueden estar
desempefiado correctamente.

AJUSTE DE VELOCIDAD
Si el motor arranca puede estar ahogado. Si tiene dudes lea la
secci6n sobre motores ahogados en la secci6n def principio de
este manua| antes de comenzar los ajustes.
Si ud no seguro de ajustar et carburador o experiencia
.cualquier problema mientras intenta este proceso, per favor
llama los 1-800 nOmero listado en la cubierta de ffente de este
manual pol"posterior asistencia.
El carburador ha estado ajustado en la fdbrica para nivel de
mar condiciona. Los ajustes se pueden poner necesarios si la
unidad estd utilizade en altitudes significativamente mds altas o
si usted notara cualquiera del siguientes condiciona:
* La m_luina no continuar_ para correr a posici6n ociosa. Vea
"Ajuste de velocidad Ocioso."
, La cuchilla continda para mover cuande la maquina ociosas.
Vea "Ajuste de velecidad Ocio-so."
• La mdquina muere o duda cuando deberia acelerar. Vea
"Cheque de Aceleraci6n. °
, Pdrdida de peder cortador que no pueda estar corregido
limpiando el filtro de aire. Vea "Ajuste de Aita Velocidad."
NOTA: No intentan voltear los ajustes rods alld de tos topes
come dafio puede ocurrir.

NOTA: En la mayor_a de los cases, su mdquina puede estar
hecho para correr adecuadamente con ajustes de carburador
menores. Refiera a sugerencias de iocalizaciSn y arreglo de
problemas anteriorrnente para la condici6n usted est_ experimentando y seguir las instrucciones. Las posiciones de carburador basices estdn proveido en el siguientes instrucciones.
• Voltee ajuste de vetocidad bajo y ajuste de alta velocidad

Si la mdquina va a estar guardada per cierto tiempo,
limpiarla a fondo antes de guardada. Quitar toda ia tierra,
hojas, aceite, grasa, etc. Guardarla en un lugar limpio y
seco.

• Limpiar toda fa mdquina.
• Umpiar el fiZtro de aire. Vet "Responsabilidades
del
usuarJo."
• Aceitar ligerarnente ]as superficies met&ticas extemas
•para impedir la oxidaci6n.
• Volver a armar todas las piezas, asegurando que todos
los mangos y protectores est_n en su lugar y bien sujetos.
Cambiar las piezas que est_n da_adas.
° La posici6n de almacenamiento recomendada es ya sea
verticalrnente con la tapa de combustible enc_ma, u
horizontalmente con ia tapa de combustible hacia ardba.
No guardar la mdquina con el accesorio de corte
arriba, per encima del motor.

COMBUSTIBLE SISTEMA
Nunca usar productos fimpiadores del motor o del
carburador en el tanque de combustible, pues se daSafian
permanentemente
los componentes deJ sisterna de
combustible.
Seguir estas instrucciones:
• Vaciar el combustible de ta m_.quina a un recipiente
aprobado para combustible.
° Arrancar el motor y dejarlo funcionar hasta que se pare
para vaciar las mangueras de combustible
y el
carburador.
° Dejar que el motor se enfrfe antes de guarda r la
mdquina.
IMPORTANTE:
Es importante impedir que se formen
dep6sitos gomosos en las piezas esenciales det sistema de
combustible tales come e! carburador, filtro de combustible,
manguera
de combustible
o tanque
durante
el
aimacenamiento. Tarnbi6n, se sabe que los combustibles.
mezclados, con alcohol, come el use de etanol o metanol
(llamado gasohol o combustible oxigenado), pueden atraer
humedad y formar gas dcido, el cual dafiard el motor. Para
evitar problernas en el motor, vaciar el sistema antes de un
almacenamiento de 30 dfas o mds.
E! estabi}izador es una altemativa aceptable para minimizar
ta formaci6n de dep6sitos gomosos en el combustible
durante el almacenamiento. Afiadir el estabilizador a la
gasotina en el tanque de combustible o contenedor de
combustible. Siempre usar la proporci6n de mezcla de
combustible indicada en el envase del estabilizador. Hacer
funcionar el motor per unos 5 minutes despu_s de a_adir el
estabi{izador para que _ste ilegue al carburador.
El aceite para motor de 2 tiempos CRAFTSMAN 40:1
(ENFRIADOS POR AIRE) es una mezcla especiatmente
preparada con estabilizadores de combustible. Si no se usa
este aceite Sears, se puede afiadir un estabilizador de
combustible (tal come Craftsman No. 33500) ai tanque de
combustible.
MOTOR

• Sacar la bujla y verter 1 cucharadita de aceite 40:t per la
abertura de la bujia. Tirar lentamente ta cuerda de
arranque unas 8 a 10 veces para distdbuir el aceite per la
superficie intema del motor.
Reemplazar la bujia con una nueva del tipo y gama de
_ ca!or recomendados. Ver "Especificaciones det producto."
Limpiar et filtro de aire. Vet =Responsabilidades del
usuario".
• Reinstalar todas las tapas y tomillerfa que se sac6 para
tenet acceso; apretar todos los tomillos y sujetadores.
• Revisar toda la m&quina en busca de tornillos, tuercas y
pemos sueltos. Cambiar las piezas que est_n dafiadas,
rotas o desgastadas.
• Aceitar |igeramente las superficies de metal extedores
pare irnpedir la oxidaci6n.
ATENCION:
Usen guantes protectores
I
• AI comienzo de la prSxima ternporada, usar cornbustible
cuando manipulando. La cuchilla es aguda
fresco que tenga fa proporci6n correcta de gasolina y
y puede cortarle,
aceite.
OTROS
• No guardar gasolina de una temporada a ta otra.
• Cambiar la lata de gaselina si comienza a oxidarse. El 6xido
y/o suciedad en el sistema de combustible causa problema.
- Guardar [a m&quina en un lugar bien ventitado y cubierto,
si es posible, para impedir la acumulaci6n de polvo y
suciedad. No cubrir con plastico. El pl_stico no permite la
respiraci6n e induce la condensaci6n y finalmente la
oxidaci6n.
IMPORTANTE: Nunca cubrir la m&quina mientras el motor
y las _.reas de escape est_n todavfa catientes.
