"LOW" position is for light cutting, trimming and fuel economy (See Fig. 5). DRIVE CONTROL o Self-propelling is controlled by holding the operator presence control bar down to the ham die and pushing the drive control lever forward until it clicks; then release the lever (See Fig 6)_ o Forward motion will stop when the operator presence control bar is released. To stop forward motion without stopping the engine, release the operator presence control bar' slightly until the drive control disengages_ Hold operator presence control bar down tohandle to continue mowing without self-propelling_ o To keep drive control engaged when turning corners, push down on handle and lift front wheels off .qround while turning mower_ NOTE: When your mower is new, the drive wheels may rotate without the drive control engaged when the wheels are lifted off the ground. Adjust cutting height to suit your requirements_ Medium position is best for most lawns. o To change cutting height, squeeze adjuster lever toward wheel. Move wheel up or' down to suit your requirements. Be sure all wheels are in the same setting (See Fig. 8)_ FIG. 7 use SAE 10W 40 oil. The total oil capacity of your engine is 21 oz. or 0.62 liters° Fill only to the full line on the dipstick. DO NOT overfill. 1'he first fill on a new engine uses about one (1) pint of oil. Check oil level and add oil as needed to BEFORESTARTINGENGINE OIL: o Remove engine oil cap with dipstick and fill to the "FULL" line on the dipstick. Use about one (1) pint or 1 t2 liter of Sears 30W oil or equivalent. SAE 10W 30 oil can also be used° DO NOT bring to the proper" level. o Pour oil slowly - DO NOT GAS: o overfill. Fill gasoline tank with fresh, clean unleaded gasoline. DO NOT USE PREMIUM GASOLINE. BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVER FILL TANK (SEE FIG,4). BEFORE STARTINGENGINE (CONT'D) .................................................................................. ............. .... _o............... ............ ! WARNING: Experience indicates that alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol) can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage. To avoid engine problems, the f_Jelsystem shouldbe emptied before storage for 30 days or longer. Drain the gas tank, start the engine and let it run until the fuel/ines and carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuel next season. See Storage Instructions for additional information. Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur. LOWER WHEELS FOR HIGH CUT MOWINGTIPS Under certain conditions, such as very tall grass, it may be necessary to raise the height of cut to reduce pushing effort and to keep from overloading the engine and leaving clumps of grass clippings. RAISE WHEELS FOR LOW CUT FIG. 8 TO STARTENGINE o To start a cold engine, push primer five (5) times before trying to start. Use a firm push_ This step is not usually necessary when starting an engine which has already run for a few minutes. o Push engine speed selector lever forward to "HIGH" positiom o Hold operator presence control bar down to the handle and pull starter handle quickly. Do not allow starter rope to snap back. o To "STOP" engine, release operator presence control bar° NOTE: In cooler weather it may be necessary to repeat priming steps, in warmer weather over priming may cause flooding and engine will not start_ If you do flood engine wait a few minutes before attempting to start and DO NOT repeat priming steps° _ ° For extremely heavy cutting, reduce the width of cut and raise the rear of the mower housing one (1) wheel adjuster setting higher than the front for better discharge of grass. o When using a rear bagging mower in moist, heavy grass, clumps of cut grass may not enter the grass catcher. Reduce ground speed (pushing speed) and/or run the mower over the area a second time. o For better grass bagging and most cutting conditions, the engine speed should be set in the "HIGH" (fast) position. o If a trail of grass clippings is left on the right side of a rear bagging mower, mow in a clockwise direction with a small overlap to collect the clippings on the next pass. _, For side discharge mowers, cutting in a counterclockwise direction, starting at the outside of the area to be cut, spreads grass clippings more evenly and puts less load on the engine_ To keep clippings off of walkways, flower beds, etc., make the first cuts in a clockwise direction. Pores in cloth grass catchers can become filled with dirt and dust with use and catchers will collect less grass° To prevent this, regularly hose catcher off with water and let dry before using. GENERAL RECO_|NDATiON o Once a year you should replace the spark plug, air filter', and check blade for wear° A new spark plug and air filter assures proper air-fuel mixture andhelps your engine run better and last longer_ o You should check all fasterners and be sure they are tighL Follow the Service Recommendation Schedule on page 16. BLADE/BLAD[ FLANGEC&R[ FIG. 9 Your mower will work better with a sharp blade. CAUTION: DISCONNECTSPARK PLUG WIRE FROM SPARKPLUG AND PLACEWIRE WHERE IT CANNOT COME IN CONTACT WITH THE SPARKPLUG. TO REMOVE BLADE: Turn mower on its side. Make carburetor are up_ Use block of wood between NOTE: We do not recommend sharpening btade - but if you do, be sure the blade is balanced, TO SHARPEN BLADE: o The blade can be sharpened with a file or on a grinding wheel. Do not attempt to sharpen while on the mower. o Care should be taken to keep the blade balanced. An unbalanced blade will cause excessive vibration when running and eventual damage to mower or engine. o To check blade balance, drive a nail into a beam or wail Leave about one inch of the straight nail exposed. Place center hole of blade over' the head of the nail. If blade is balanced, it should remain in a horizontal position. If either end of the blade moves downward, blade is not balanced. Sharpen the heavy end until the blade is balanced_ sure air filter and blade and mower housing to prevent blade from turning when nut is removed.
