• Keep all parts of your body away
from the chain when the saw is running.
• Keep children away. Do not let visitors contact chain saw or extension
cord. All visitors should be kept at
least 30 feet (10 meters) away from
work area.

• Do not handle or operate a chain saw
when you are fatigued, ill, or upset, or
if you have taken alcohol, drugs, or
medication. You must be in good
physical condition and mentally alert. If
you have any condition that might be
aggravated by strenuous work, check
with doctor before operating. Watch
what you are doing. Use common
sense.
• Do not start cutting until you have a
clear work area, secure footing, and
especially if you are felling a tree, a
retreat path. Keep work area clean.
OPERATE YOUR SAW SAFELY
• Do not operate with one band. Serious injury to the operator, helpers, or
bystanders may result from onehanded operation. A chain saw is intended for two-handed use.
• Do not operate saw from a ladder or
in a tree.
• Make sure the chain will not make
contact with any object while starting
the saw. Never try to start the saw
when the guide bar is in a cut.
• Do not force chain saw. It will do the
job better and safer at the rate for
which it was intended.
• Do not put pressure on the saw, especially at the end of a cut. Doing so can
cause you to lose control when cut is
completed.
• Stop the saw before setting it down.
• Hand carry saw only when motor is
stopped. Carry the chain saw by the
front handle with the saw stopped, finger off the switch, the guide bar and
saw chain to the rear.
• Use the right tool, cut wood only.
Don't use chain saw for purpose not
intended; for example, do not use a
chain saw for cutting plastic, masonry,
or non-wood building materials.
• Do not operate a chain saw that is
damaged, improperly adjusted, or
not completely and securely assembled. Always replace bar, chain,
hand guard, or other parts immediately if they become damaged, broken, or are otherwise removed.
• Inspect chain saw cords periodically
and if damaged, have repaired by a

is the backward, upward or sudden forward motion of the guide bar occurring
when the saw chain near the upper tip
of the guide bar contacts any object
such as a log or branch, or when the
wood closes in and pinches the saw
chain in the cut. Contacting a foreign
object in the wood can also result in
loss of chain saw control.

bar. This contact can cause the
chain to dig into the object, which
stops the chain for an instant. The
result is a lightning fast, reverse
reaction which kicks the guide bar up
and back toward the operator.

tensioned. A loose or dull chain can
increase the chance of kickback.

Check tension at regular intervals,
but never with engine running. Make
sure bar mounting nuts are securely
tightened.
• Begin and continue cutting at full
speed. If the chain is moving at a
slower speed, there is greater
chance of kickback occurring.
• Use extreme caution when re-entering a cut.
• Do not attempt cuts starting with the
tip of the bar (plunge cuts).
• Watch for shifting logs or other objects that could close a cut and pinch
or fall onto chain.
• Use the specified Reduced-Kickback
Guide Bar and Low Kickback Chain.

• Be extremely aware of situations or
obstructions that can cause material
to pinch the top of or otherwise stop
the chain.

• A good, firm grip on the saw with
both hands will help you maintain
control. Don't let go. Grip the rear
handle with your right hand whether
you are right or left handed. Wrap the
fingers of your left hand over and
around the front handlebar, and your
left thumb under the front handlebar.
Keep your left arm straight with the
elbow locked.
• Position your left hand on the front
handlebar so it is in a straight line
with your right hand on the rear handle when making bucking cuts.
Stand slightly to the left side of the
saw to keep your body from being in
a direct line with the cutting chain.
• Stand with your weight evenly balanced on both feet.
• Do not overreach. You could be
drawn or thrown off balance and lose
control.
• Do not cut above shoulder height. It
is difficult to maintain control of saw
above shoulder height.

CONSTRUCTION
This unit is double insulated to help protect against electric shock. Double insulation construction consists of two
separate "layers" of electrical insulation
instead of grounding.
Tools built with this insulation system are
not intended to be grounded. No
grounding means is provided on this

CHAIN SAW. Compare the illustrations with your unit to familiarize yourself with the
location of the various controls and adjustments. Save this manual for future reference.

TRIGGER SWITCH
The TRIGGER SWITCH is used to turn
on the unit. Squeeze the trigger switch
to operate the unit after lock-out button has been pushed forward. Release
the trigger to turn the unit off.
TRIGGER LOCK-OUT
BUTTON
The TRIGGER LOCK-OUT BUTTON is a
control feature designed to prevent the
motor from being accidently started.
When the rear handle is gripped in a
normal cutting position, the lock-out
button can be pushed in by the thumb,
permitting the index finger to squeeze
the trigger. It is not necessary to maintain pressure on the lock-out button
once the trigger has been engaged.

The BAR OIL CAP is used to fill the bar
oil tank.
CHAIN ADJUSTMENT

The CHAIN ADJUSTMENT SCREW is
used to adjust the chain tension.

The POWER CORD is used to connect
the chain saw to an approved extension cord.
CHAIN TENSION
It is normal for a new chain to stretch
during first 30 minutes of operation.
You should check your chain tension
frequently. Readjust chain after every
15 minutes of operation. See CHECK
CHAIN TENSION under the SERVICE
AND ADJUSTMENTS section.

GUIDE BAR AND CHAIN OIL
The chain oiler provides lubrication to
the chain and guide bar. Be sure to fill
the bar oil tank before each cutting session. For maximum guide bar and chain
life, we recommend you use Craftsman
chain saw bar oil. If Craftsman bar oil is
not available, you may use a good
grade SAE 30 oil until you are able to
obtain Craftsman brand. Use a funnel to
fill the tank. Replace oil cap securely.
Check oil level after every 15 minutes of
operation.
CHAIN BRAKE
Ensure chain brake is disengaged by
pulling the front hand guard back toward the front handle as far as possible. The chain brake must be disengaged before cutting with the saw.
STOPPING YOUR SAW
• Release the trigger switch.
• If motor does not stop, activate teh
chain brake and disconnect the ex-

tension cord. Discontinue use of the
unit until repaired by a Sears Service
Centre.

1. Connect the saw to a power
source using the proper size extension cord (see SELECT AN EXTENSION CORD).
2. Grip both handles firmly.
3. Push and hold the trigger lock-out
button with your right hand thumb.
4. Squeeze and hold the trigger
switch.
CHAIN BRAKE
Aid, WARNING:
WE DO NOT REPRESENT AND YOU SHOULD NOT ASSUME THAT THE CHAIN BRAKE WILL
PROTECT YOU IN THE EVENT OF A KICKBACK. Kickback is a lightning fast action
which throws the bar and rotating chain
back and up toward the operator. Kickback can be caused by allowing contact
of the bar tip in the danger zone with
any hard object. Kickback can also be
caused by pinching the saw chain along
the top of the guide bar. This action
may push the guide bar rapidly back toward the operator. Either of these
events may cause you to lose control of
the saw which could result in serious injury or even death. DO NOT RELY UPON
ANY OF THE SAFETY DEVICES BUILT
INTO YOUR SAW. YOU SHOULD USE THE
SAW PROPERLY AND CAREFULLY TO
AVOID KICKBACK. Reduced-kickback
guide bars and low-kickback saw
chains reduce the chance and magnitude of kickback and are recommended.
Your saw has a low kickback chain and
bar as original equipment. If the brake
band is worn too thin it may break when
the chain brake is triggered. With a broken brake band, the chain brake will not
stop the chain. The chain brake must be
replaced if any part is worn to less than
1/32" thick. Repairs on a chain brake
should be made by your Sears Service
Centre. Take your unit to the place of
purchase or to the nearest Sears Service Centre.
• This saw is equipped with a chain
brake. The brake is designed to stop
the chain if kickback occurs.
• The inertia-activated
chain brake is
activated if the front hand guard is
pushed forward, either manually (by
hand) or automatically (by sudden
movement).

CAUTION: The chain brake must be
checked several times daily. The engine
must be running when performing this
procedure. This is the only instance
when the saw should be placed on the
ground with the engine running.
Place the saw on firm ground. Hold the
handles with both hands and apply full
throttle. Activate the chain brake by turning your left wrist against the hand guard
without releasing your grip around the
front handle. The chain should stop immediately.

following procedure, the engine must
be turned off.
Hold the chain saw approximately 14"
(35 cm) above a stump or other wooden
surface. Release your grip on the front
handle and use the weight of the saw to
let the tip of the guide bar fall forward
and contact the stump. When the tip of
the bar hits the stump, the brake should
activate.
OPERATING TIPS
• Check chain tension before first use
and after 1 minute of operation. See
CHECK CHAIN TENSION in the SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS section.
• Cut wood only. Do not cut metal,
plastics, masonry, non-wood building
materials, etc.
• Stop the saw if the chain strikes a
foreign object. Inspect the saw and
repair parts as necessary.
• Keep the chain out of dirt and sand.
Even a small amount of dirt will
quickly dull a chain and increase the
possibility of kickback.
• Practice cutting a few small logs using the following steps. This will help
you get the "feel" of using your saw
before you begin a major sawing operation.

• Squeeze the trigger switch and allow unit to reach full speed before
cutting.
• Begin cutting with the saw frame
against the log.
• Keep the motor at full speed the
entire time you are cutting.
• Release the trigger switch as soon
as the cut is completed, allowing
the motor to stop.
• Keep the cord away from the cutting area. Position cord so it will
not be caught in branches and the
like during cutting.
• To avoid losing control when cut is
complete, do not put pressure on
saw at end of cut.
• Stop motor before setting saw down.
TREE FELLING TECHNIQUES
Check for broken or dead branches
which can fall while cutting causing serious injury. Do not cut near buildings
or electrical wires if you do not know
the direction of tree fall, nor cut at night
since you will not be able to see well,
nor during bad weather such as rain,
snow, or strong winds, etc. If the tree
does make contact with any utility line,
the utility company should be notified
immediately.
• Carefully plan your sawing operation in
advance.
• Clear the work area. You need a clear
area all around the tree so you can
have secure footing.
• The chain saw operator should keep
on the uphill side of the terrain as the
tree is likely to roll or slide downhill
after it is felled.
• Study the natural conditions that can
cause the tree to fall in a particular
direction, such as:
• The wind direction and speed.
• The lean of the tree. The lean of a
tree might not be apparent due to
uneven or sloping terrain. Use a
plumb or level to determine the direction of tree lean.
• Weight and branches on one side.
• Surrounding trees and obstacles.
• Look for decay and rot. If the trunk is
rotted, it can snap and fall toward the
operator.
• Make sure there is enough room for
the tree to fall. Maintain a distance of
2-1/2 tree lengths from the nearest
person or other objects. Motor noise
can drown out a warning call.
• Remove dirt, stones, loose bark,
nails, staples, and wire from the tree
where cuts are to be made.

FELLING LARGE TREES
(6 inches in diameter or larger)
The notch method is used to fell large
trees. A notch is cut on the side of the
tree in the desired direction of fall. After
a felling cut is made on the opposite
side of tree, the tree will tend to fall in
the direction of the notch.
NOTE: If the tree has large buttress
roots, remove them before making the
notch. If using saw to remove buttress
roots, keep saw chain from contacting
ground to prevent dulling of the chain.
NOTCH CUT AND FELLING TREE
• Make notch cut by cutting the top of
the notch first. Cut through 1/3 of the
diameter of the tree. Next complete
the notch by cutting the bottom. See
illustration. Once the notch is cut, remove the wedge of wood from the
tree.

• After removing the wood, make the
felling cut on the opposite side of the
notch. This is done by making a cut
about two inches higher than the
center of the notch. This will leave
enough uncut wood between the felling cut and the notch to form a hinge.
This hinge will help prevent the tree
from falling in the wrong direction.

NOTE: Before felling cut is complete,
use wedges to open the cut if necessary to control the direction of fall. To
avoid kickback and chain damage, use
wood or plastic wedges, but never
steel or iron wedges.
• Be alert to signs that the tree is
ready to fall: cracking sounds, widening of the felling cut, or movement in
the upper branches.
• As tree starts to fall, stop saw, put it
down, and get away quickly on your
planned retreat path.
• DO NOT use your saw to cut down a
partially fallen tree. Be extremely cautious with partially fallen trees that may
be poorly supported. When a tree
doesn't fall completely, set saw aside
and pull down tree with a cable winch,
block and tackle, or tractor.
CUTTING A FALLEN TREE
(BUCKING)
Bucking is the term used for cutting a
fallen tree to the desired log size.

Do not stand on the

log being cut. Any portion can roll
causing loss of footing and control. Do
not stand downhill of the log being cut.
IMPORTANT POINTS
• Cut only one log at a time.
• Cut shattered wood very carefully;
sharp pieces of wood could be flung
toward operator.
• Use a sawhorse to cut small logs.
Never allow another person to hold
the log while cutting and never hold
the log with your leg or foot.
• Do not cut in an area where logs,
limbs, and roots are tangled. Drag logs
into a clear area before cutting them
by pulling out exposed and cleared
logs first.

pinched or hung in a log, don't try to
force it out. You can lose control of the
saw resulting in injury and/or damage
to the saw. Stop the saw, drive a
wedge of plastic or wood into the cut
until the saw can be removed easily.
Restart the saw and carefully reenter
the cut. Do not use a metal wedge. Do
not attempt to restart your saw when it
is pinched or hung in a log.

Prepare your unit for storage at tile

If your chain saw is to be stored for a
period of time:

le long du bas de la barre-guide et

Cet arr6t soudain de la cha_ne tire la
trongonneuse en avant et loin de I'op6rateur et pourrait facilement faire
d6truire roperateur la commande de
la trongonneuse.
POUR REDUIRE LE RISQUE DE RECUL
• Soyez toujours conscient de la possibilit6 de recul. Avec une comprehension basique du recul, vous
pourrez r6duire la surprise qui contribut aux accidents.
• Ne permettez jamais que la chain,
6tant en mouvement, touche n'emporte quel objet & la pointe de la
barre.
• Tenez I'espace de travail d6barrass6 des obstructions tels comme les
autres arbres, les branches, les
pierres, les cl6tures, les souches,
etc. Eliminez ou 6vitez toute obstruction que la cha_ne pourrait
toucher pendant la coupure.
• Maintenez la cha_ne tranchante et
avec la tension correcte. Les
chatnes I&ches ou 6mouss6es
peuvent augmenter les possibilit6s
de recul. Respectez les instructions
du fabriquant & 1'6gard d'aiguisement de la cha_ne et les instructions
d'entretien. V6rifiez la tension r6guli_rement, mais jamais avec le moteur en marche. Assurez-vous
que
les 6crous de la frein de cha_ne sont
bien ajust6s.
• Commencez et continuez la coupure avec I'acc61_ration & fond. Si la
chatne tourne & une vitesse moindre

que le maximum, il existe une possibilit6 plus grande de recul.
• Ne coupez qu'un rondin au m6me
temps.
• Soyez extr&mement soigneux en
rentrant dans une coupure d6j&

• Ne tenez pas commencer les coupures avec la pointe de la barre
(coupure de perceuse).
• Prenez garde aux rondins glissants
et aux autres forces qui pourraient

• Employez la barre au recul reduit et
