it, do not mowit.
Foryoursafety,use the SlopeGuide includedas partof this manual
to measureslopesbeforeoperatingthis machineon a slopedor hilly
area. If the slopeis greaterthan15 degreesas shownon the Slope
Guide,do notoperatethis machineon that area or seriousinjurycould
result.

Neverleavea runningmachineunattended.Alwaysturnoff
blade(s),set parkingbrake,stopengine and removekey before
dismounting.
Use extracare whenloadingor unloadingthe machineintoa
traileror truck. This machineshouldnot be drivenup or down
ramp(s),becausethe machinecouldtip over,causingserious

SPEED CONTROL LEVER

SHIFT LEVER

Thespeedcontrol lever,locatedon the left sideof the
tractor'sdashconsole,allowsyouto regulatethe ground
speedof the lawntractor.Touse, depressthe clutchbrakepedaland movethe leverout of the parkingbrake
notchand forwardto increasethetractor'sgroundspeed.
Whena desiredspeedhasbeen reached,releasethe
leverintoan appropriatenotchto maintainthat speed.

MULCHING
A mulch kit isavailableasan attachment. Mulching isa processof
recirculating
grass clippings repeatedly beneath the cutting deck.
The ultra-fine clippings are then forced back into the lawnwhere
they act asa naturalfertilizer.

IMPORTANT: Whenstoppingthe tractorfor any reasonwhileon a
grass surface,always:

USING THE DECK LIFT LEVER
Toraisethe cuttingdeck,movethe deck lift levertothe left,then place
it in the notchbest suitedfor yourapplication.Referto SettingThe

MOWING

Tohelp avoidbladecontactor a thrownobject injury,keepbystanders, helpers,childrenand pets at least 75 feet fromthe machine
whileit is in operation.Stop machineif anyoneentersthearea.
Thefollowinginformationwill be helpfulwhenusingthe cuttingdeck
with yourtractor:

Planyour mowingpatternto avoiddischargeof materialstoward
roads,sidewalks,bystandersand the like.Also, avoiddischarging
materialagainsta wallor obstructionwhich maycausedischarged
materialto ricochetbacktowardthe operator.

Do not mowat high groundspeed,especiallyif a mulch kit or
grasscollectoris installed.

•

For best resultsit is recommendedthat the firsttwo laps be cut
with the dischargethrowntowardsthe center.Afterthe first two
laps, reversethe directionto throwthe dischargeto the outside
for the balanceof cutting.This will givea betterappearanceto the
lawn.

Do notcut thegrass too short.Shortgrass invitesweedgrowth
and yellowsquicklyin dry weather.
Mowingshouldalwaysbe done withthe engineat full throttle.

Beforereplacingthe fuelfilter,drain the fueltank. Otherwisefuel
can leakout and causea fireor explosion.
To Drainthe fuel:

Locatethefuelfilter,whichis routedon the left sideofthe engine
betweenthe fueltankand the carburetor,and maybe attachedto
theenginewitha tie strap.Cutthetie strap,ifpresent,then pinch
thein-lineclampon thefuelfilterwith a pairof pliers,slidethe
clampup thefuelline.Pullthe fuellinefreefrom thefilterand place
theopenend of the lineintoan approvedcontainerto drainthefuel.

Usepliersto squeezethe tabs on the otherclamp (theout-line
sideof the fuel filter),thenslidethe clamp awayfromthe fuel filter.
Twistand pull the fuellineoff of the fuelfilter.See Figure10.
Checkthe fuel linesfor cracksor leaks.Replaceif necessary.
Replacethe fuel filter withan originalequipmentreplacement
filter.Call1-800-4-MY-HOME®to purchasethe originalequipment replacementfilter.

deck wash system.
Thedeck wash systemis usedto rinsegrassclippingsfromthe deck's
undersideand preventthe buildupof corrosivechemicals.

Measurethedistancefromthe front of the bladetip to the ground
and the rearof the bladetip to theground.Thefirst measurement takenshouldbe between1A"and 3A"less thanthe second
measurement.Determinethe approximatedistancenecessaryfor
properadjustmentand proceed,if necessary,to the next step.
Locatethe flangelock nut on the front sideof the stabilizer
bracket.See Fig. 14.
• Tightenthe flangelock nut to raisethe front of thedeck;
• Loosentheflange lock nutto lowerthe front of the deck.

of metalfrom bothendsof the bladesalongthe cuttingedges,
parallelto the trailingedge,at a 250.to 300angle.Alwaysgrind
eachcutting bladeedge equallyto maintainproperblade balance.

One 20 AMPfuse is installedin yourtractor'swiringharnessto protect
the tractor'selectricalsystemfrom damagecaused byexcessive
amperage.
If theelectricalsystemdoesnot function,or yourtractor'senginewill
not crank,first checkto be certainthat the fuse hasnot blown.It can
be foundat the rear of the unit, underneaththefenderlocatedby the
battery.

Alwaysusea fuse with the sameamperagecapacityfor replacement.

CUTTING

BLADES

Shutthe engineoff and removeignitionkey beforeremovingthe
cuttingblade(s)for sharpeningor replacement.Protectyourhands
by usingheavygloveswhengraspingthe blade.

especiallyafter you'vestrucka foreignobject. Donot operatethe

exposeits underside.
Placea blockof woodbetweenthe centerdeck housingbaffle
and the cuttingbladeto act as a stabilizer.

A poorlybalancedbladewill causeexcessivevibration,maycause
damageto the tractorand/or resultin personalinjury.

the heavy sideuntil it balancesevenly.

Usea torquewrenchto tightenthe bladespindlehexflangenut to
between70 Ibs-ftand 90 Ibs-ft.

THE DECK BELT

Be sureto shut the engineoff, removeignitionkey,disconnectthe
Ispark plug wire(s)and ground againstthe engineto preventuninltended startingbeforeremovingthe belt.

All belts on yourtractorare subjectto wearand shouldbe replacedif
any signsof wearare present.

iMPORTANT: The V-beltfoundon yourtractoris speciallydesigned
to engageand disengagesafely.A substitute(non-OEM)V-beltcan
be dangerousby notdisengagingcompletely.Fora properworking

11. Whileholdingthe belt and pulleytogether,rotatethe pulleyto the
left. Continueholdingand rotatingthe pulleyand belt untilthe belt
is fully rolledinto the PTOpulley.

THE ENGINE

DRAiNiNG

IMPORTANT:Fuelleft in thefuel tank duringwarm weatherdeterioratesand will causeseriousstartingproblems.
To preventgumdepositsfromforminginsidethe engine'scarburetor
and causingpossiblemalfunctionof theengine,thefuel systemmust
be eithercompletelyemptied,or the gasolinemustbe treatedwith a
stabilizerto preventdeterioration.
1. If usingafuel stabilizer:
a.

Readthe productmanufacturer'sinstructionsand recommendations.

b.

Add to clean, freshgasolinethe correctamountof stabilizer
for the capacityof the fuel system.
Fillthe fueltank with treatedfuel and run the enginefor 2-3
minutesto get stabilizedfuel intothe carburetor.

c.
2.

Reconnectthe fuel lineand run the engineuntil it starts to
falter,thenuse thechoketo keeptheengine runninguntilall
fuel in thecarburetorhas beenexhausted.

d.

Disconnectthefuel lineand drain any remaininggasoline
from the system.

Gasolineis a toxicsubstance.Disposeof gasolineproperly.Contact
your localauthoritiesfor approveddisposalmethods.

Locatethe fuel filter,which is locatedon the left sideof the
engine,and maybe attachedto the enginewith a tie strap.

2.

Cutthe tie strap,if present,then pinchthe in-lineclamp on the
fuel filter with a pair of pliers,slidethe clamp up the fuel line.
Pullthe fuel line freefrom the filter and placethe open end of the
lineintoan approvedcontainerto drain the fuel.

PREPARING

Gasolineis extremelyflammableand can be explosiveundercertain
conditions.Draingasolinebeforestoringthe equipmentfor extended
periods.Drainfuel only intoan approvedcontaineroutdoors,away
from an openflame.Allowengineto cool. Extinguishcigarettes,
cigars,pipes, and othersourcesof ignitionprior to drainingfuel.
Storegasolinein an approvedcontainerin safe location.

If emptyingthe fuel system:
a. Donot drainfuel whenthe engineis hot. Allowthe engine
adequatetime to cool. Drainfuelinto an approvedcontainer
outdoors,awayfrom open flame.
b. Drainany largevolumeof fuel from thetank bydisconnecting thefuel linefrom the in-linefuel filter nearthe engine.

Removethe sparkplug and pour one (1) ounceof engineoil
throughthe sparkplug hole intothe cylinder.Cranktheengine
severaltimesto distributethe oil. Replacethe spark plug.
