!In order to combat cheating on high-stakes college entrance
exams, a new weapon is being rolled out in Chinese schools at
two testing centers in central China. A new contraption flying over-
head is being employed to scan for any unusual signals being sent
to devices such as answers to student smart phones. A student can
be banned from re-taking the exam for up to three years if caught
cheating and found guilty.
!After years of hard work, Fernando Rojas, a southern Califor-
nia teen is about to move across the country to attend college, and
he'll have bragging rights to being a member of a very select group
of freshmen. Rojas, who is 17 and a national speech and debate
champion, was accepted to all eight Ivy League universities and
has chosen Yale.

!McMINN CO. MAN DIES FROM BEE STINGS
Dr. Kelly Thomas, 40, of the Clearwater community died Sunday
night after being stung in the back of the neck
by a bee. Dr. Thomas was a lecturer and tuba/
euphonium instructor for the University of
Tennessee Music Department. He and his wife
(the former Jana Simpson) and their children
had recently moved from Arizona to the
Clearwater community to be near his wife's
family. While in Arizona, Dr. Thomas was a
tuba/euphonium instructor and director of the
pop band at the University of Arizona.

!WORKER KILLED AT RESOLUTE PLANT
A contractor working at Resolute Forest Products (formerly
Bowater) in Calhoun has died from injuries received in an acci-
dent. The man, whose name has not been released, was an em-
ployee of Jake Marshall Mechanical Contractors from Chattanooga.
He was working at the Kraft Mill facility, which is where pulp is
produced, when the accident happened last Friday. Details of the
accident have not been released.

The Etowah Area Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a
ribbon cutting to welcome a new business, Shabby Chic
Sister's, to downtown Etowah. Shabby Chic Sister's carries

• Deloris (Lois) Wattenbarger Shirk, age 62, of Madisonville
died Saturday at her home. She was a longtime resident of Mc-
Minn County. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Zie-
gler Funeral Home, with visitation from 5 to 7 p.m.
• Carolyn Emalene Lance Jackson, age 60, of Athens died Sat-
urday at Starr Regional Medical Center of Athens. Funeral ser-
vices will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ziegler Funeral Home, with
visitation from 12 noon to 2 p.m.
Angela (Angie) Joy Brown, age 54, of Madisonville died last
Friday at Sweetwater Hospital. She was a longtime employee of
Sea Ray Boats. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at
Biereley-Hale Funeral Home in Madisonville, with visitation from
5 to 7 p.m.
• Rosetta "Jean" Jackson, age 74, died last Saturday. Funeral
services will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Bowers Funeral Home in
Decatur, with visitation from 4 to 6 p.m.
• Dr. Kelly Thomas, age 40, of the Clearwater community died
Sunday at his residence. Funeral arrangements will be announced
later by Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home.
• Rachel Rebecca Hendrix, age 64, of Englewood died Saturday
at Starr Regional Medical Center of Etowah. Funeral arrangements
will be announced by Bordwine Funeral Home.

1870 - Author Charles Dickens died at age 58.
1891 - Songwriter Cole Porter was born in Indiana. He
wrote such popular songs as "I Love Paris," "Begin the
Beguine," and "Wunderbar."
1915 - Guitar player Les Paul was born. He and his wife,
Mary Ford, recorded many popular records in the 1950's,
such as "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise" and "Vaya
Con Dios." Les Paul died in 2009.
1934 - The cartoon character Donald
Duck made his debut in the film, "The
Wise Little Hen."
1973 - Secretariat won horse racing’s Triple Crown with a
victory at the Belmont Stakes.
