Festival Association
2014 LOCAL ADDENDUM
Information and Regulations Pertaining to
Locally Created Classes
Local classes have been created to allow for greater accessibility to our festival.
A three-digit number indicates a locally created class. Only those locally created classes approved in
advance by the Executive Director of the Alberta Music Festival Association can be used to satisfy
eligibility to the Provincial Festival.
Addendum classes may be REQUESTED. Requests will be considered up to the beginning of June for
inclusion in the local addendum the following festival year.
The Local Classes Committee’s aim is to create a set of local classes to parallel the provincial syllabus.
Our Association believes that the most important aspects of music festival are the participation of
students and the learning derived from the adjudicator’s remarks.
Competitors, teachers and parents are strongly urged to carefully study the Provincial Syllabus and the
Local Addendum. Contact the local Entry Secretary if clarification is needed:
Shirley Anderson, Entry Secretary

North Peace Performing Arts Festival Policies and Rules:
1. The use of video recorders or cameras may be permitted provided that the user remains

cameras is prohibited during a performance or adjudication. Adjudications are not to be
recorded.
2. The grading system from the Provincial Syllabus will be used.
3. No marks will be announced. Placement of first or second in a class may be announced by the
adjudicator.
4. Letter grades only will appear on the adjudication sheets.
5. Marks and placements will be recorded in the Official Marks Binder for Awards purposes.
6. There will be a maximum of 8 participants in any class. The NPPAF reserves the right to divide
or combine classes.
7. The order of classes may be changed from that of the printed program and without written
notice.
8. There is no age limit for adult classes.
9. Selections in local adult classes may be at any level.
10. Taped accompaniments are not allowed, except for classes L2050-L2057.
11. Memorization is not required, but provincial recommendations will be considered only for those
who perform by memory. See the Provincial Syllabus for classes that do not require
memorization at the Provincial Level.
12. Entrants using downloaded music or speech selections must provide proof of purchase or proof
of permission to copy. You may only use a photocopy if you have written permission from the
publisher. Note that many publishers will grant permission for one-time festival use of a
photocopy if you have purchased the book and need a second copy. Please refer to rule #18
and #19 in Provincial Syllabus for further clarification of original/published music.
13. Rules Specific to Awards:
a. Awards may be offered to competitors who enter PROVINCIAL and/or LOCAL classes.
b. Adjudicators’ decisions on all awards are final. Adjudicators have absolute discretion in
this regard and the Festival Committee is in no way responsible for the choices made by
the adjudicators.
c. The recipient is expected to use monetary awards to further his or her musical
education.
d. To be eligible for an award, a SOLO participant should enter in at least TWO solo classes
in the same discipline. The NPPAF accepts the performance of at least two selections in
a Recital or Concert class as fulfillment of this requirement for awards purposes only.
Soloists must enter TWO eligible Provincial solo classes in order to be recommended to
the Provincial Festival.
e. To be eligible for an award, a GROUP participant should have performed at least TWO
selections. Groups must perform two eligible Provincial solo classes in order to be
recommended to the Provincial Festival.
f. Any resident of Alberta is welcome to participate in the North Peace Performing Arts
Festival, but our awards are limited to competitors who reside in the northwest
quadrant of Alberta.
It is the competitor’s responsibility to know and follow the rules of the Provincial and Local Festival.
Failure to comply with the rules in their entirety may result in cancellation of the competitor’s entry
and forfeiture of awards.
Competitions shall be under the working management of the Festival Committee, and any questions of
interpretation or of matters not dealt within the rules shall be referred to the Committee, whose decision on any
such matters shall be final and binding for all concerned.
The scope of any Festival requires that participants comply with all Alberta Music Festival Association rules. Such
are updated annually and can be found in the Provincial Syllabus located on the Alberta Music Festival Association
Web Site: http://www.albertamusicfestival.org
Local additions to the provincial rules will also be printed in our official program.
THE GLOSSARY OF TERMS in the Provincial Syllabus is recommended reading to interpret the rules.
