Instructions for Read Together Student Read Aloud
Having your student read out loud to you is the single most important element
to boosting reading ability. It also builds comprehension, enhances their decoding
skills, and deepens your relationship.
Time
At least 10 minutes
Before Reading
Determine your students reading level by using the
Word Challenge Reading Assessment tool.
(found in the Read Together resource section). You
may also want to talk with his teacher or start one
or two grade levels below his current level.
Select a book or short story from the student read
aloud book list (also found in the resource section).
Determine whether you’ll have your student read a
new text or re-read a familiar text.
During Reading
Draw attention to errors and when your student
encounters a mistake; encourage her to try again.
Typical decoding errors include:
Pausing or stopping
Trying a sound, sound approach
Inserting a wrong word
Misidentifying a vowel sound or not attempting
the sound
Help your student blend sounds.
Identify just one sound to focus on.
Cover word chunks with a 3 x 5 card to break a word
down into smaller pieces.
After Reading
Encourage your student to summarize what she read!
Ask questions about the story or the characters to help
build comprehension skills.
