Registrant Questions
Question: If I make a document a key document because of a redaction (for example), does that
create another copy of the document or does it change the existing document in the file?
Answer: It essentially creates another copy of the document. So in your example, if you redact
an exhibit and make it a key document, you can then go back to the original exhibit and clear the
redaction, and the key document will still show the redacted area.
Question: once you create a document on the whiteboard how do you mark it as an exhibit?
Answer: Once you create the whiteboard, find it in your file list on the left (in the root folder, at
the bottom of your folders and files). Press the Edit button at the top and then select the
Whiteboard so the checkbox is highlighted to its left. Then press the Rename button at the
bottom. The box that appears will allow you to name and place an exhibit sticker on the
whiteboard.
Question: Will multimedia feature work for just audio files?
Answer: The multimedia area works for both audio and video files. Keep in mind that whether
you use audio or video, they need to be in a format supported by the iPad.
Question: Can you bookmark a place on a video with Trial Pad?
Answer: No - the closest you can come is to make video clips, so you can show only a part of a
video.
Question: What work-arounds have either of you developed for being able to make full use of
TrialPad features / utility in courtrooms w/o good (or any) A/V capabilities? (ie., bring your own
flat screens? printers? etc.?)
Answer: If you encounter a court with poor / no audio/visual capabilities (make sure you find
this out sooner than later - you don’t want to show up on the day of trial and learn it for the first
time), the following is what we consider the minimum requirements to create your own setup:
•

iPad

•

LCD Projector (make sure it has an HDMI port if you want to use Apple TV)

•

Adapters - VGA (if your projector doesn’t have HDMI), or a VGA to HDMI adapter (so
you can use Apple TV with a VGA projector - the Kanex Pro is a good option)

•

VGA extension cable - extra cables to make sure you have enough between counsel table
and the projector’s location

•

Apple TV (if you have a projector with HDMI output or a VGA-to-HDMI adapter

25

•

Speakers and cable - you will need to plug speakers into your iPad in order to play
depositions or other audio files.

•

Projector Screen

Question: Could you give us a verbal description of how one would use TrialPad during a
closing argument integrating exhibits, video clips, filing in verdict forms, adding up damage
elements, etc. without the jury seeing you "read"?
Answer: The best way to do this is to mark those exhibits and video clips you want to use in
closing as Key Documents as you proceed through the trial. You will also want to create a jury
verdict form and any other documents you want to use in closing and make them Key
Documents as well. In the Key Documents area, you can press Edit and arrange exhibits, videos
and other documents in the order you want to cover them during closing. Then when time for
Closing Argument comes, just press Key Docs, and all the documents / videos you want to cover
should be there on the left, in the order you want to present them.
Question: wont a large case with many depositions and documents have more info than can fit
on an ipad, even the one with the most memory -- is this a limitation for large commercial cases?
Answer: It will depend on how much video you intend to use, because that will take up the most
space. However, if your case is document-intensive, the TrialPad team has found that it is
possible to store and display thousands of exhibits on a 16GB iPad. To be safe, you’ll want to
use a 128GB iPad, to make sure you have the most capacity. Another workaround is to bring a
wireless portable hard drive with you to court - you can store additional documents on them, and
wirelessly transfer them to the iPad if you happen to need them during trial.
We have not heard of any reports of lawyers who couldn’t use the iPad because of the volume of
documents in a case - but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen. There may be very large cases that
are not suitable for the iPad, and you’ll want to use a PC-based tool like Sanction or Trial
Director.
Question: Have you slaved a USB-based printer off of Airport Express and successfully printed
from the iPad device?
Answer: Tom has not.
Question: Can documents made in Whiteboard be renamed and then moved into separate case
folders? Can you change presentation backgrounds? Are there remote devices that can advance a
presentation file in TrialPad such as a remote mouse?
Answer: 1) Yes, you can rename a Whiteboard, and move it to any other case within TrialPad. 2)
If you press on the Settings button (the gear icon next to Output at the bottom of the screen), the
first option is Background - you can choose between Black, White and Gradient backgrounds. 3)
It is not possible to remotely control TrialPad - to do that, there would need to be a dedicated
“TrialPad Remote” app that you could run from an iPhone, similar to the Keynote Remote that
works with Apple’s Keynote presentation software.
