Term Paper Assignment – Art Encounter

Due Sunday, Dec. 2, 11:59 p.m.
The idea behind this paper is that you look at—really experience—a painting, sculpture, or
installation in a museum, gallery, or other public space. The City of Redmond has a public art
collection, as does the King County Library System (KCLS), local hospitals, SeaTac Airport, and
so on. Downtown Kirkland has public art, as well as a number of galleries. Free admission to
museums (like the Bellevue Arts Museum and the Seattle Art Museum) is available through
KCLS. You must write about a work of art that is off-campus, and in a publicly accessible
space (not a private home, for instance). Your paper is a kind of report—both on the work of
art, and your personal response to it. When you tell others about art, there is always an
element of interpretation and opinion. Below are two tables with the required aspects of the
paper.

What is the title of the work of art?
What is the medium of the work?
What is the artist’s name?
What year was the work created?
What is the subject matter of the work of art?
What is the content (or meaning)?

Why did this work of art capture your interest?
Include a “selfie” of you with the work of art. You may need permission in some
venues.

Basic Requirements
APA or MLA style, including bibliography or works cited page (although
your research may be limited to our textbook and to websites)
Minimum 900 words. Maximum 1100 words. Word count does not
include your bibliography, title of your paper, or your “front matter”
(your name, etc.)
Use proper academic English. You should not have any grammatical or
spelling errors. Do not use contractions or slang. Your writing should flow
comfortably to make it easy for your reader.
Submit on time
Some rules:
Do not write about a work of art that you, or someone you know, has created.
Submit your assignment through Moodle.
Complete your assignment using a word-processing software such as Microsoft Word and Open
Office (download free software at http://www.openoffice.org).
Proofread your paper carefully. An application like Grammarly can help, but having another
person with good writing skills read your paper is even better.
