CHAPTER 1STARTING OUTRevised: 2 Oct 01 1-2OVERVIEWThe ESTeem Model 192E is a wireless LAN transceiverthat can be configured as the center point of a stand-alone wireless network, connection point betweenwireless and wired network (Access Point) or a bridgebetween Ethernet segments.  Each configuration isexplained in detail in Chapter 2 of this manual.  Thissection of the User’s Manual will complete the basicconfiguration of the system and allow furtherprogramming through the ESTeem Configuration Menu.The ESTeem Model 192E uses a menu-drivenmanagement system for configuration and diagnostics. This management system can be accessed through aTelnet network connection or through any terminalemulation program.  To link through the networkconnection, some of the basic operating parameters suchas assigning the ESTeem an IP address and Subnet maskmust be completed by accessing the configuration menuthrough the serial port.  Any terminal emulation programcan be used for this configuration of the ESTeem andwill be configured similarly, but this section of themanual will describe basic configuration of the ESTeemModel 192E using the Terminal Emulation programcontained on the ESTeem Utility Program CD-ROM.HARDWARE LAYOUTLocate the items contained in Figure 1 for initialconfiguration of the ESTeem Model 192E. Take a fewminutes to inventory your equipment before you proceed.Report any missing or damaged items to CustomerSupport (509-735-9092) as soon as possible.Caution: Your ESTeem hardware may have antennasother than the AA01S listed in Figure 1, but you musthave an antenna connected to the antenna port beforeapplying power to the unit.INSTALLING SOFTWAREThe ESTeem Utility Program is designed to provide theESTeem user access to the configuration menu of theESTeem Model 192E.  The Utility contains a TerminalEmulation program that will allow direct access to themanagement menus of the modem.  None of the othersections of this utility, such as Diagnostics will functionwith the Model 192E.  The ESTeem Utility Program isdesigned to operate with Windows 95®, Windows 98®and Windows NT® 4.0 and greater.Installing ESTeem Utility SoftwareWindows 95/98/NT4.0 (or greater)1. Place the ESTeem Utility Software CD in your CD-ROM drive (Figure 1).2. Select Run on the Start Menu.3. Type (your CD-ROM drive letter, D in this exampleD:\ESTUtil\Setup.exe)4. Click the OK button and the program will begininstallation.Running The Program1. Select the ESTeem Utility Icon on Start>Programsmenu. CHAPTER 1STARTING OUTRevised: 2 Oct 01 1-32. Select Terminal Emulation from the Main Menu.3. Once the Terminal Emulation is loaded, select theTerminal Setup from the menu and press Ports.  Youshould see the serial port configuration menu (Figure3).4. Select the serial port you have connected to theESTeem Model 192E (i.e. COM1 would be 1), setthe Baud Rate to 38400, Data Bits to 8, Parity toNone, Stop Bits to 1 and leave both the Hardwareand Software flow control boxes unchecked.  Pressthe OK button when complete.5. Verify the settings in the upper left hand corner ofthe Terminal window are set toCOM1:38400,N,8,1).  If the communications portnumber is other than 1 it will be displayed as thenumber (i.e. COM2, etc.).The software is now configured for accessing theESTeem Model 192E for system configuration.  Anyother terminal emulation program will need to beconfigured similarly.FRONT PANEL DESCRIPTIONFigure 4 contains a description of the ESTeem Model192E front panel.BASIC CONFIGURATIONConnect and Power Up the ESTeemThe following steps should be completed before anymodifications are made to the network operatingparameters for the ESTeem Model 192E.Note: Plan to configure the Model 192E prior tomounting.  Some of the following steps, such asconnecting the serial cable, are easier to perform if theESTeem is accessible.1. Connect the antenna to the antenna port on theESTeem Model 192E (Figure 4).2. Connect the Ethernet cable from the wired 10BaseTEthernet LAN to the Ethernet connector on the frontof the ESTeem (Figure 4).3. Connect the serial cable (EST P/N: AA062) betweenthe RS-232 connector on the ESTeem to the serialport on the computer.4. Plug the ESTeem Model AA174 power supply into awall socket and connect the Molex power connectorto the ESTeem.  The power light (PWR) on the frontof the ESTeem should be illuminated.5. You should see the ESTeem Model 192E bootingsequence on your Terminal Emulation program. Once the ESTeem boot sequence is complete(approximately 1 minute) you will receive themessage “Please press Enter to active this console.”6. Press the Enter key and you will be at theConfiguration Menu login prompt (192E login:). Note: These values can be changed from factory defaultthrough the Configuration Menu.  If this not the first timeconfiguration of the ESTeem, see you network systemsadministrator for these values.If this is the first time the ESTeem has been programmedor the login was not changed from the factory defaultvalues, please use the following to access theConfiguration Menu:1. If your application does not match any of theabove Networking Requirements, please consult withyour network system administrator or contact ESTCustomer Support at 509-735-9092.USING THE CONFIGURATION MENUThe ESTeem Model 192E Configuration Menu (Figure1) is used to set the operating parameters of the wirelessEthernet modem to operate in an Ethernet network.  Welearned in Chapter 1- Starting Out how to configure aterminal emulation program to access the ConfigurationMenu through the RS-232 port on the ESTeem.  If youhave not completed Chapter 1 or have questions on howto access the Configuration Menu, please review thatsection before proceeding.Accessing Through TelnetLooking at the Main Menu screen of the ConfigurationMenu, you will notice the header lists the connectedESTeem Model 192E’s serial number, current mode ofoperation, current Service Set Identifier (SSID - if AccessPoint) or Bridge IP address (Bridge Mode Only), and IPaddress.  Using the IP address, you can start a Telnetsession to the ESTeem through the Ethernet network toaccess the Configuration Menu. Note: If the ESTeem Model 192E is configured inEthernet Bridge mode, the Wireless IP and the EthernetIP addresses must be on unique Subnets (See EthernetBridging Configuration for more information) to gainaccess to the configuration menu through Telnet.  Eachoperating system has a different method of starting aTelnet session.  Please review the documentation on youroperating system or consult with your network systemadministrator.Changing Configuration InformationTo move between menu items in the ESTeem Model192E Configuration Menu you must first enter thenumber next to the menu item and then press the EnterKey (<Enter>).  All commands must be followed by theEnter key.  For example, to review the Copyrightinformation on the ESTeem Model 192E, press thenumber 5 key followed by the Enter key (5<Enter>). The Configuration Menu will always prompt you iffurther input is required or the input received wasinvalid.  To back out of most menu screens and return toFigure 1: Configuration Menu
CHAPTER 2APPLICATION PROGRAMMINGRevised: 2 Oct 01 2-3the previous menu without making changes, press the Xkey followed by the Enter key (X<Enter).Saving and Exiting Configuration MenuAny changes made in the Configuration Menu willonly take effect in the Model 192E when the Save andApply Changes (7<Enter>) is selected.  When Save andApply Changes is selected, you will be asked if you wishto continue.  Press the Y key followed by the Enter key(Y<Enter>) and the ESTeem will save the changes andreboot the modem.  It will take approximately 1 minutefor the ESTeem to reboot to obtain a new login prompt.If you wish to exit the Configuration Menu withoutsaving any of the changes made, select Logout(8<Enter>). Note: Any changes made during the time you werelogged into the Configuration Menu will be lost.MODEM SETUPStep 1 – Radio ConfigurationThe first step in configuring a wireless Ethernet networkis setting all ESTeem Model 192Es that communicatewith each other to the same radio configurationparameters. 1. From the Configuration Main Menu, select Setup(1<Enter>).2. Select Radio Configuration (2<Enter>) to load theRadio Configuration Menu (Figure 2).3. Select Power Settings (1<Enter>) to configure theoutput power of the ESTeem. 4. Select Data Rates (2<Enter>) to set the RF baud rateof the ESTeem.  If all baud rates (1, 2, 5.5 and 11Mbps) are listed, the ESTeem will scale through thebaud rates as required by signal quality and strength(recommended).5. Select Channel (3<Enter>) to set the operatingfrequency of the ESTeem.Note: All ESTeems that communicate with each otherMUST be set to the same channel number.Channel Number Center Frequency1 2412 MHz2 2417 MHz3 2422 MHz4 2427 MHz5 2432 MHz6 2437 MHz7 2442 MHz8 2447 MHz9 2452 MHz10 2457 MHz11 2462 MHz6. Review all your changes on the screen are correctand select Return to previous menu (X<Enter>) toreturn to the Setup Menu.7. Select Return to previous menu (X<Enter>) a secondtime to return to the Main Menu.Step 2 – Modes of OperationThe ESTeem Model 192E can be used in a variety ofnetwork system configurations.  The ESTeem can stand-alone as the center of a wireless infrastructure, canprovide access from your wireless network to your wiredLAN, or bridge between Ethernet segments on yournetwork.The Model 192E can also be configured as a repeater inthe network to increase the range of the wirelessinfrastructure.  The maximum communications range isbased upon how you configure your wireless network. This section of the manual will describe the possibleconfigurations of the wireless network.Access Point ConfigurationIn this network one of the ESTeem Model 192E modemsis configured as the “Access Point”.  This Access Point isthen used to bridge wireless network to the cabled LANnetwork or act as the center point on a stand alonewireless network. CHAPTER 2APPLICATION PROGRAMMINGRevised: 2 Oct 01 2-4network, all wireless cards (ESTeem Model WLANC11)communicate only with the Access Point that serves theWireless Local Area Network (WLAN) as a HUB. Multiple Access Points can be configured in the networkto extend the coverage area of the wireless cards.  Thewireless cards will automatically change between AccessPoints (Roam) as long as they are all configured with thesame SSID and Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)information.  This type of network can extend the rangeof the wireless cards greater than they can directlycommunication with each other. The Access Point is responsible for maintaining a logicallink between the clients and providing the wirelessclients with access to information on the wired LANnetwork.  Figure 3 shows an example of the Model 192Ein an Access Point Configuration.To configure the ESTeem Model 192E as an AccessPoint, please use the following:1. From the Configuration Main Menu, select Setup(1<Enter>).2. Select Modes of Operation (1<Enter) to enter thesystem configuration menu (Figure 4).3. Select Access Point (1<Enter>) to open the AccessPoint configuration screen.4. Select Current SSID (1<Enter>) and type in theSSID information for your WLAN.Note: The SSID is the unique identification for yourwireless network.  All 802.11b devices that share awireless network MUST have the same SSID code.  Thisidentification code is case sensitive and must NOTcontain spaces.5. Select Current IP Address (2<Enter>) to assign theESTeem an IP address.6. Select Current IP Net Mask (3<Enter>) to changethe ESTeem Net Mask.7. If the wireless network is going to be using WEPsecurity codes, press Encryption Settings (4<Enter>)to enter the Privacy Menu (Figure 5) otherwise leavethe setting at “False” and skip to Step 12.Note: Setting the WEP security codes are highlyrecommended for network privacy.  They do requireextensive network administration, but if used correctlythey can provide the same level of security as a wirednetwork.8. If WEP security is going to be used in the WLAN,select Encryption Enabled (1<Enter>) and value willchange to “True”.9. If you wish to keep clients without the correct WEPcode from entering your WLAN, set Excludeunencrypted clients (2<Enter>) to “True” otherwiseset to “False”.   If this value is set to “False”, theAccess Point will allow clients without the correctWEP code and those with the correct WEP code tojoin the network as long as all SSID codes match.10. Reviewall your changes on the screen are correct and selectReturn to previous menu (X<Enter>) to return to theAccess Point Configuration Menu.12. If all configurations appear correct, press LoadValues and Return to Main Menu (M<Enter>).13. Once at the Main Menu, press Save and ApplyChanges (7<Enter>) and Yes (Y<Enter>) to rebootthe ESTeeem.Ethernet Bridging ConfigurationThe Ethernet Bridging network allows the Model 192Emodems to provide links between two or more Ethernetsegments on a network.  Ethernet segments can be eithersingle network clients such as computers or PLCs or tiesinto building LAN networks such as HUBs or switches.This type of network can provide tremendous flexibilityin your wireless network configurations and also providea much greater range than available through the wirelesscard network as described in the Access Point section. Figure 6 shows an example of an Ethernet Bridgingnetwork.The Bridging Mode has two possible configurations,Master Bridge and Client Bridge (Figure 6).  A bridgingnetworks can only have one ESTeem Model 192Econfigured as a Master Bridge.  A 192E configured as aClient Bridge can communicate with another 192Econfigured as a Client Bridge, but the Ethernet dataMUST be routed through a Master Bridge first. The twoClient Bridge modems do not communicate directly,therefore all bridge networks must have at least one 192Econfigured as the Master Bridge.  For example, in asimple point to point wireless Ethernet network, oneModel 192E will be configured as a Master Bridge andone will be configured as a Client Bridge.Master BridgeTo configure the ESTeem Model 192E as a MasterBridge, please use the following:1. From the Configuration Main Menu, select Setup(1<Enter>).2. Select Modes of Operation (1<Enter) to enter thesystem configuration menu (Figure 4).3. Select Master Bridge (2<Enter>) to open the MasterBridge configuration menu (Figure 7).4. Select Current SSID (1<Enter>) and type in theSSID information for your bridge network.Note: The SSID is the unique identification for yourwireless network.  All ESTeem Model 192Es in thebridge network MUST have the same SSID code.  Thisidentification code is case sensitive and must NOTcontain spaces.5. Two unique IP addresses are required for theESTeem Model 192E in bridging mode.  Both theWLAN port and the 10BaseT port need a unique IPnumber (Figure 8).  Select Current Wireless IPAddress (2<Enter>) to assign the ESTeem an IPaddress.Note: To gain access to the Model 192E through Telnetwhile configured in Bridge Mode, the Wireless IP andthe Ethernet IP address must be on unique Subnets. Contact your system network administrator for furtherinformation on what IP address should be used in thesubnet.6.
