7LG-Ericsson PCI-1020 Wireless 802.11n PCI AdapterTable of ContentsWireless ConsiderationsThe LG-Ericsson PCI-1020 Wireless 802.11n PCI Adapter allows you to access your wireless network within the operating range of your wireless router or access point. Consider the following when installing wireless devices: the number, thickness and location of walls; ceilings; and other object that may limit the range the wireless signal must pass through. Wireless ranges vary depending on the types of material and background radio frequency noise. The key to maximizing your wireless range is to follow these basic guidelines: yKeep the number of walls and ceilings between the LG-Ericsson PCI-1020 and other network devices to a minimum - each wall of ceiling can reduce your adapter’s range. Position the device so that the number of walls or ceilings are minimized. yBe aware of the direct line between network devcies. A wall, 1.5 feet thick (0.5 meters), at a 45 degree angle appears to be almost 3 feet (1m) thick. At a 2 degree angle, it looks over 42 feet (14 meters) thick. Position your device so the signal travels straight through a wall or ceiling (instead of an angle) for better reception. yBuilding materials make a difference. A solid metal door or aluminium studs may have a negative effect on the range. Try to position access points, wireless routers, and computers so the signal can pass through. Materials and objects such as glass, steel, metal, walls with insulation, water (sh tanks), mirrors, le cabinets, bricks, and concrete can degrade your wireless signal. yKeep products away (3-6 feet or 1-2m) from electrical devices or appliances that generate RF noise. yIf you are using 2.4GHz cordless phones or X10 (wireless products such as ceiling fans, lights, and security systems), your wireless connection may degrade dramatically or drop signal strength completely. Make sure your 2.4GHz base unit is as far away from your wireless devices as possible. The base transmits a signal even if the phone is not in use.

In infrastructure mode, the wireless devices communicate with each other and to a wired network by first going through an access point. Infrastructure mode is useful at a corporation scale, or when it is necessary to connect the wired and wireless networks.Adhoc mode: An ad-hoc network is a group of computers, each with a wireless adapter, connected as an independent 802.11 wireless LAN. Ad-hoc wireless computers operate on a peer-to-peer basis, communicating directly with each other without the use of an access point. Ad-hoc mode is also referred to as peer-to-peer mode and is useful at a departmental scale or SOHO operation.

It encrypts data over radio waves but because of its physical structure, it is more vulnerable to tampering. It protects data from one end point to another. However, because it is at the lowest network layer level, it doesn not offer end-to-end security.Step 4: Enter a Network key password. This can be obtained from your network administrator or if you have access to your Access Point. Click OK when done.Security Settings - Shared/WEP

74LG-Ericsson PCI-1020 Wireless 802.11n PCI AdapterGlossaryWEP - WEP is designed to provide the same level of security as that of a wired LAN. WLANs, which are over radio waves, do not have the same physical structure and therefore are more vulnerable to tampering. WEP aims to provide security by encrypting data over radio waves so that it is protected as it is transmitted from one end point to another.WPA - a Wi-Fi standard that was designed to improve upon the security features of WEP. The technology includes two improvements over WEP:Improved data encryption through the temporal key integrity protocol (TKIP). TKIP - scrambles the keys using a hashing algorithm and, by adding an integrity-checking feature, ensures that the keys haven't been tampered with. User authentication, which is generally missing in WEP, through the extensible authentication protocol (EAP). EAP is built on a more secure public-key encryption system to ensure that only authorized network users can access the network.WPA2-PSK - Short for Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 - Pre-Shared Key, and also called WPA or WPA2 Personal, it is a method of securing your network using WPA2 with the use of the optional Pre-Shared Key (PSK) authentication, which was designed for home users without an enterprise authentication server. To encrypt a network with WPA2-PSK you provide your router with a plain-English passphrase between 8 and 63 characters long. Using a technology called TKIP (for Temporal Key Integrity Protocol), that passphrase, along with the network SSID, is used to generate unique encryption keys for each wireless client.PSK - Short for phase-shift keying, in which different phase angles in the carrier signal are used to represent the binary states of 0 and 1.AES - Short for Advanced Encryption Standard, is a symmetric 128-bit block data encryption technique. AES works at multiple network layers simultaneously. AES has a fixed block size of 128-bits and a key size of 128, 192, or 256-bits.EAP - Short for Extensible Authentication Protocol, an extension to PPP. EAP is a general protocol for authentication that also supports multiple authentication methods, such as token cards, Kerberos, one-time passwords, certificates, public key authentication and smart cards. IEEE 802.1x specifies how EAP should be encapsulated in LAN frames.802.11n - The additional transmitter and receiver antennas allow for increased data throughput through spatial multiplexing and increased range by exploiting the spatial diversity. The speed is 100 Mbit/s, and so up to 4-5 times faster than 802.11g. 802.11n also offers a better operating distance than current networks.

Federal Communication Commission Interference Statement This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one of the following measures: - Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna. - Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver. - Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected. - Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help. FCC Caution: Any changes or modifications not expressly approved by the party responsible for compliance could void the user's authority to operate this equipment. This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation. IMPORTANT NOTE: Radiation Exposure Statement: This equipment complies with FCC radiation exposure limits set forth for an uncontrolled environment. This equipment should be installed and operated with minimum distance 20cm between the radiator & your body. This transmitter must not be co-located or operating in conjunction with any other antenna or transmitter.
