Use NiMH orlithium batteries for best results.1Turn the D-ring counter-clockwise, andpull up to remove the cover.2Insert two AA batteries, observingpolarity.3Replace the battery cover, and turn theD-ring clockwise.4Hold .5Select Setup > System > BatteryType.6Select Alkaline,Lithium, orRechargeable NiMH.Introduction 3

Turning On the Devices• On the handheld device, hold thepower key until the LCD display turnson.• On the dog collar device, hold thepower key until the status LED flashesand the collar beeps.Getting the Owner's ManualGo to www.garmin.com/manuals/astro430 .Charging the Dog Collar DeviceNOTICETo prevent corrosion, thoroughly dry thecontacts on the collar and the surroundingarea before connecting the charging clip.NOTE: Your dog collar device may lookdifferent than the device pictured.You should fully charge the battery beforeyou use the device for the first time.Charging a fully depleted battery takesabout five hours.1Snap the charging clip ➀ onto thedevice ➁.2Plug the small end of the power cableinto the mini-USB port on the chargingclip cable.3Plug the power cable into a powersource.The status LED is solid red when thecollar is charging.4After the status LED turns solid green,remove the charging clip from thecollar.Acquiring Satellite SignalsBoth the collar and handheld device mustacquire satellite signals before you put thecollar on your dog. 3Select the power key on the handhelddevice. shows the GPS signal strength.When the collar has acquired satellitesignals, the status LED flashes a double-blink or triple-blink in green.Pairing a Dog Collar to the AstroDeviceBefore you can pair devices to thehandheld device, the handheld devicemust be close enough to the dog collardevice to touch it.The handheld device can track up to 20dogs with dog collar devices. If youpurchase additional dog collar devices,you can link them to the handheld device.1Select DOG.2Select Add Dog.3Follow the on-screen instructions.By default, the new dog is named“Dog” and an ID number is randomlyassigned.An error message could appear ifthere is a conflict with the ID number ofanother dog.After pairing is compete, you can add thedog collar device to additional handhelddevices using the dog collar device trackcode or control code.Adjusting the Backlight BrightnessNOTE: The backlight brightness may belimited when the battery strength is low.Extensive use of screen backlighting cansignificantly reduce battery life.1Select .2Select to cycle through thebrightness levels.3Select ENTER.Dog TrackingThe handheld device allows you to trackyour dog, using the tracking compass ormap. The map displays your location andyour dog's location and tracks. Thecompass pointer indicates the direction ofthe dog's current location.Fitting the Collar on Your Dog CAUTIONDo not spray the device or collar withharsh chemicals including but not limitedto flea or tick spray. Always ensure thatany flea or tick spray that is applied to theIntroduction 5

dog is completely dry before placing thecollar on the dog. Small amounts of harshchemicals can damage the plasticcomponents and collar laminate.Before you can put the collar on the dog,you must pair the handheld device andcollar (page 5) , and acquire satellitesignals (page 4).1Position the collar with the VHF whipantenna pointing up, the GPS antennafacing up, and the LEDs facingforward.2Place the collar around the middle ofthe dog's neck.3Tighten the strap so it is snug aroundthe dog's neck.NOTE: The collar should fit tightly andshould not be able to rotate or slide onthe dog's neck. The dog must be ableto swallow food and water normally.You should observe your dog'sbehavior to verify the collar is not tootight.4If the strap is too long, cut off theexcess, leaving at least 3 in. (7.62 cm)to spare.Calibrating the CompassNOTE: You must calibrate the electroniccompass outdoors. Do not stand nearobjects that influence magnetic fields,such as cars, buildings, or overheadpower lines.The device has a 3-axis electroniccompass. You should calibrate thecompass after moving long distances,experiencing temperature changes, orchanging the batteries.1Select DOG > MENU.2Select Calibrate Compass > Start.3Follow the on-screen instructions.6 Introduction

Hunt MetricsHunt metrics provides a collection of datathat helps you understand the huntingpatterns and behaviors of your dog. Thehunt metrics reset automatically at thebeginning of each new hunt.Communication with the CollarYou should keep an unobstructed line ofsight between your handheld device andthe dog collar device to produce the bestcommunication signal. Select Setup > About.VHF Radio InformationThis product may be used only on specificradio frequencies, which vary dependingon the country of use. The handhelddevice and the dog device allow the userto install a different antenna. Changing theantenna can result in improved radioperformance and higher radiated power.You must not use the device with a thirdparty antenna or an antenna not approvedby Garmin. If two dogs within range of thehandheld device have the same ID, thehandheld device warns you of a conflictingID signal.
