Å(Volume/squelch key)Press to adjust the volumeand squelch levels.ÆPTT(Push-to-talk key)Hold to transmit on thecurrent radio channel.Acquiring Satellite SignalsIt may take 30 to 60 seconds to acquiresatellite signals.1Go outdoors to an open area.2If necessary, turn on the device.3Wait while the device searches forsatellites.A question mark flashes while thedevice determines your location.4Select   to open the status page. shows the GPS/GLONASS signalstrength.When the bars are full, the device hasacquired satellite signals.RadioIn the United States and Canada, thisdevice uses General Mobile Radio Service(GMRS) for two-way communication withother compatible radio devices.In Australia, this device uses UHF CitizenBand Radio Service (UHF CBRS), and inNew Zealand, this device uses UHFPersonal Radio Service (PRS) for two-waycommunication with other compatible radiodevices.When communicating with other Garmin®Rino devices, additional features areavailable.Opening the Radio AppYou can manage your channel, code, andother radio settings in the radio app.From the home screen, select Radio.Channels and CodesTo communicate with other Rino andGMRS or UHF CBRS/PRS radio users,you must be on the same channel.For a list of channels for your region anddevice, see the owner's manual.NOTE: GMRS frequencies are regulatedby the FCC in the United States. Totransmit on GMRS frequencies, you mustobtain a license from the FCC.Squelch codes allow you to filter calls fromother users on the same channel, so youhear only the radios you want to hear. Continuous Tone Controlled SquelchSystem (CTCSS) and Digital-CodedSquelch (DCS). Calls on the channel thatare not using the same squelch code inthe same squelch mode are ignored.For a list of squelch codes for your regionand device, see the owner's manual.NOTE: Squelch codes do not make yourconversation private. Anyone on the samechannel can hear your conversation.Selecting a Channel1From the radio app, select Channel.2Select a channel from the list.Selecting a Squelch Code1From the radio app, select Code.2Select a code from the list.NOTE: Selecting Off allows you tohear everything on the channel.Monitoring a Channel for ActivityYou can monitor a single channel for anyactivity, including static and weak voicesignals. This is helpful if a signal is goingout of range.1From the radio app, select the channelyou want to monitor.2Select Monitor.Scanning ChannelsYou can scan the channels for voiceactivity. This can help you find a channelwith light activity for your group to use, orto find other radio users in the area.From the radio app, select Scan.Peer-to-Peer PositioningYou can send your location information toother Rino users using peer-to-peerpositioning. Through peer-to-peerpositioning, you can also track themovement of other Rino users on thesame channel and code, and navigate totheir locations.Peer-to-peer positioning is enabled bydefault, and your position information issent to other Rino users on the samechannel and code when you press thePTT key (push-to-talk) or the   key(call).NOTE: You can send location informationonly once every 30 seconds, due to FCCrestrictions.Polling Other Rino UsersYou can request position updates for otherRino users who are in your saved contacts(page 6).Quick Start Manual 5
1From the contacts app, select a savedcontact.2Select Poll Location.The location of the contact is updatedon the map.ContactsYou can save information about anotherRino user as a contact. You can viewlocation information and navigate to thelocation of users in your contacts list.Saving a New ContactThe first time the device receives a peer-to-peer positioning signal from anotherRino user, the new contact page appears.To save the contact details or navigate tothe contact in the future, you must savethe new contact in your contacts list.From the new contact page, selectSave.The new contact is saved in yourcontacts list.Navigating to a Contact1From the home screen, selectContacts.2Select a contact.3Select View Map > Go.4Follow   to the contact's location.Creating, Saving, and Sending NotesYou can send a short text note to Rinousers on your current channel and code.NOTE: Notes transmit to all users on yourcurrent channel and code, not just to yoursaved contacts.1From the home screen, select Notes.2Select Send Note > New Note.3Enter the note text.Due to FCC regulations, you can entera maximum of 13 characters in a note.4Select Done.5Select Send and Save.NavigationYou can navigate to a route, track,waypoint, geocache, or any saved locationin the device. Opening the MapYou can browse the map or use the mapto view your position and route whennavigating to a destination.From the home screen, select Map.NOTE: You can use the Thumb Stickto pan or browse the map.Opening the CompassWhen you are navigating to a destination,you can use the compass to point towardyour destination or toward the nextwaypoint in a route.When you are not actively navigating, youcan use the compass to determine yourorientation.From the home screen, selectCompass.NOTE: The device uses GPS to determinethe heading on the compass, so you mustbe moving to view accurate compassinformation.Customizing the DeviceAdjusting the Backlight BrightnessYou can adjust the backlight brightness tomaximize the battery life. For a longerbattery life, you should turn off thebacklight when using the device indaylight.1Select  .2Use the Thumb Stick to adjust thebacklight brightness.Device InformationLong-Term StorageWhen you do not plan to use the devicefor several months, you should charge thebattery to at least 50% before you storethe device. You should store the device ina cool, dry place with temperatures aroundthe typical household level.
