It is not envisaged that the staff device willbe opened by staff, however it may beconsidered useful information tounderstand the internal components thatcreate this product.Inside the Prada staff device are a numberof standard electronic components, as wellas some custom made elements.ProcessorThe processor component is a CompaqiPaq (model 3630) with 32MB RAM. Thisis mounted inside the chassis. The main battery is mounted inside thechassis, providing power to the processorand LCD screen.LCD screenThe display is mounted to the chassisinside the case.NetworkingThe iPAQ expansion jacket provides theexpansion slot and battery power for thenetwork card. The networking is provided by a wirelessnetwork card.Laser unitThe laser pointer is a 1 mW Class II laserdiode module. The switch for the laser is located on theside of the case. This is a push to makeswitch. The laser will only operate whilstthis switch is pressed.RF ID ReaderThe RF reader is a custom arrangement, including standard parts from IDSystemsLtd, OEM -185 scan module.Charging circuitThe RF reader module and laser moduleare powered by a custom battery andcharging control circuit.Speakerthe speaker provides for any audiorequirements that the software mayrequire. The iPAQ and the expansion jacketcomponents have been removed from theiroriginal casing so as to reduce overallsize.hardware components 9staff_device_documentation_11.qxd 26/11/2001 11:21 Page 9
The laser pointer built into the staff deviceuses a Class II laser component.Class II lasers emit visible laser light withpower levels less than 1 mW radiantpower and are capable of creating eyedamage through chronic exposure. The human eye blink reflex, which occurswithin 0.25 seconds of exposure to theClass II laser beam, normally providesadequate protection. It is possible however to overcome theblink response and stare into the Class IIlaser long enough to damage the eye. Young children, especially babies may nothave the responses to look away from thebeam..Exposure to a couple of seconds of thelaser beam will cause only temporary"spots" in front of the eyes, but should stillbe avoided. The power is great enough todamage the eye if someone stares directlyinto the beam for long enough. Class II lasers are exempt from any formalcontrol measures, but common senseprecautions should be taken whenever thedevice is used.It is essential that all staff using thisdevice are trained on the safe use ofthe laser function.IMPORTANT: Laser InformationTo minimize risk of direct eye exposure, staff using this device should exercisethese precautions: * Do not look intentionally into the laserbeam or at a specular reflection, regardless of its power.* Never point the laser at another memberof staff or public, especially at their eyes.* Avoid pointing the laser at glass or otherreflective surfaces where the beam couldaccidentally reflect into someone’s eyes.* When the laser is on, ensure you cansee where the light spot terminates itspath.* Do not wave the device around with thelaser on.* Never leave the staff device unattendedwhere a member of public could use it.The staff device carries a laser warninglabel. Should this become damaged, unreadable or is removed, it should bereplaced.NOTE: The laser component uses thesame battery power supply as the RF tagreader component. With extended use, thismay reduce the amount of power and timelaser pointer10staff_device_documentation_11.qxd 26/11/2001 11:21 Page 10
This section covers installation of softwarecomponents onto the Staff Device.Although some components such asnetwork drivers will be pre-installed beforeshipment. The notes contained here are appropriatefor dealing with small quantities of devices. However, a more structured installationprocess may be needed for largerquantities.Should the network driver and othercomponents need to be re-installed due tototal power loss or other major failure, thenthe following steps can be taken to re-install the necessary driver. When the Staff Device was first shipped, the network driver for the wireless LANcard was already installed. This was donein order to functionally test the networkinghardware.NOTE: The specific settings required forthe intended environment may howeverneed to be configured to work with theenvironment’s networking architecture. With a network driver installed andconfigured correctly, it would be possible tocomplete all further software installation viathe network. However, it may be preferredto complete the installation via the infra-redport.Connecting to a desktop PCEnsure that Microsoft Activesync (v3.5) isinstalled and working correctly on thedesktop PC.Ensure that an active Infra-red port isavailable and that the Connection Settingsuse the Infra-red port as default.Switch on the Staff device.Use the stylus to navigate to‘Start:Programs:Connections’ and tap on‘IR ActiveSync’.Point to front of the Staff device at theInfra-red port on the desktop PC.When prompted, connect as ‘Guest’. It willnot be necessary to set up partnershipswith every device. It is also likely that thedevice will only need to be synchronizedthis one time for download of applicationdata and drivers.Network Card DriverThe WL110 network card requires driversin order to operate.Install the drivers by running the installerapplication on the desktop PC, ‘setup.exe’.The configuration of the network carddrivers needs to be done, but this can waituntil all other installations are complete. This will cover the basic components asdelivered, but other components will berequired before the device is shipped tothe end user.FlashIf Flash is required for the final clientapplication, then now is the time to installthe Flash Player component.Run the installer application on thedesktop PC ‘FlashPlayer4DR-SA-Installer.exe’.If this is not the first time this installer hasbeen run, the first time it will ask if youwish to remove all components. This isOK. Run the installer a second time andthe components will be installed.Client applicationThe client application should be installed.Disconnect deviceDisconnect the device from the PC.Adjust network settings, other uniquesettings, and reset the device.Launch the client application.software configuration 11staff_device_documentation_11.qxd 26/11/2001 11:21 Page 11

The charging stations can re-charge up to24 staff devices at one time.To operate, ensure that the chargingstation is plugged into the mains poweroutlet, and that the power switch at therear is turned on.Insert the staff device into one of theavailable slots, either way round.You do not need to fill all available slotsbefore charging can begin.The blue lamp on the staff device will startto flash at a rate of one flash per second.When charging is complete, the blue lampwill remain on steady.The charging process from a fully draineddevice to fully charged will take about 3hours.For optimum battery performance, alwaysfully re-charge the device before using.Disconnect the charging station when notin use.MechanicalDevices supported per station . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .24Flame retardant materials . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .yesWeight . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .TBD KgMaximum incline during use . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .5 degreesElectrical Supply to each device . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5V regulated DC at 2ASwitch mode power supply . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .UL approved . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .5V 50A (250W)Mains power . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .110 - 240V ACOn/off mains power button . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .yesSeparate user replaceable fuse . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .TBDEnvironmental Temperature range . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .0° to 40°C TBDRelative humidity(non-condensing) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 20 to 90% TBDChemical compatibilityChemical resistance . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Body oil and perspirationCleaning . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Wipe clean onlyRegulatory compliance US approvals . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .21 CFR 1040, 21 CFR 1005specifications 19staff_device_documentation_11.qxd 26/11/2001 11:21 Page 19
This section is not intended to be acomplete problem solver, as manyproblems amy be associated with the clientsoftware, network settings, userunderstanding, and so on, but aims to givedirection to some of the more commonproblems that might be encountered duringnormal operational use.My Staff Device will not switch onThe most common reason for this is lackof power. Once the iPAQ’s internalbatteries have become drained, the unitwill fail to switch on. There should still be asmall amount of power left inside, to keepthe data stored on the device safe, but itwill not switch on.To resolve this problem, place the deviceinto its charging station and leave until fullyre-charged. This will normally take about 4hours.If the staff device will not switch on, do notattempt to reset the device using the resetswitch. This may drain the batteries tosuch a low level that data loss may occur. The blue charging lamp is flashingslowly, but it is not in the charger. This is a warning that the battery power tothe RF reader and the laser needs to becharged. Put the device in the chargingstation and leave until fully re-chargedThe backlight goes offThe backlight is normally configured sothat it will go off after a period of no userinteraction. To restore the backlight, tapthe screen. The time taken for thebacklight to automatically go off isdetermined by the settings in the operatingsystem. If the backlight will not come on, thebattery probably needs charging. Put thedevice in the charging station and leaveuntil fully re-chargedThe devices switches offThe device is normally configured so that itwill switch off after a period of no userinteraction. To switch the device back on,press the power button once. The timetaken for the backlight to automatically gooff is determined by the settings in theoperating system. If the device continues to switch off shortlyafter switching on, then the battery needsto be charged. replace the device in thecharging trolley and fully re-charge.The device is working but it will notscan any garment tagsThis can happen if the battery for the lasercomponent and the RF unit has becomedrained through use. The device needs tobe charged before use to ensure allbatteries are fully re-charged.The device has no applications ornetworking softwareThe main battery may have becomecompletely drained. The device will needto be re-configured by the IT support teamWhen I touch the screen, it doesn’tseem to select the right functionsIt is possible that over time, or due toextreme temperature conditions, the touchscreen calibration could have lost itsaccuracy. To solve this, the screen needs to be re-calibrated. This can be done by using theWindowsCE built-in system tools.Select Start:Settings:System:Align Screenand following the on-screen instructions. My device seems to have completelyfrozenIt is possible that the device can crash dueto some system or client software error. Toreset the device, use the special toolprovided to reset the device. Insert the toolinto the small hole at the bottom of thedevice and the operating system will re-troubleshooting20staff_device_documentation_11.qxd 26/11/2001 11:21 Page 20
boot. This will take a few seconds. After a re-boot, it will be necessary torestart the client application.I’ve dropped my device into some waterWipe the device dry as much as possible.with tissues. Allow to dry thoroughly for atleast 24 hours before switching on. Do notforce dry with any heating device. My device has become dirtyThe staff device (including the screen) canbe cleaned with a damp cloth and a smalldrop of mild detergent. Wipe the devicegently with the cloth and dry afterwardsusing a tissue. Do not immerse into wateror other liquids.I looked into the laser beam and now Isee spots before my eyesThe spots should gradually disappear asyour eyes regain their normal use.If symptoms persist, seek medical advice.Do not stare into the laser beam.My staff device is missingIf the device was switched on, there maybe a security risk. There is also a risk that a child couldmisuse the laser.Inform the store IT manager and security.None of the staff devices seem to bechargingCheck that the power supply to thecharging station is plugged into the 110vpower outlet.Check that the fuse to the charging stationhas not blown. Some of the staff devices have steadyblue lamps when charging, some areflashingThis is normal. Some devices will reachthe fully charged point before others, depending on how discharged they were tostart with. One of the staff devices will not chargeTry a different charging slot in case thecontacts are dirty.Check that the charging contacts are cleanon the device.21staff_device_documentation_11.qxd 26/11/2001 11:21 Page 21
