t his can enhance wireless net work securit y, it is com m only considered a weak securit y feat ure.
To connect t o a st ealt h access point , a user m ust specifically know t he SSI D and configure t heir
DMU accordingly. The feat ure is not a part of t he 802.11 specificat ion, and is known by differing

prot ocols challenge over t his encrypt ed channel t o enable server validat ion. The challenge and
response packet s are sent over a non - exposed TLS encrypt ed channel. TTLS im plem ent at ions
t oday support all m et hods defined by EAP, as well as several older m et hods ( CHAP, PAP, MSCHAP and MS- CHAP- V2) . TTLS can easily be ext ended t o work wit h new prot ocols by defining
new at t ribut es t o support new prot ocols.
WEP ( Wired

Wired Equivalent Privacy, 64 - and 128- bit ( 64 - bit is som et im es referred t o as 40 - bit ) . This is a
low - level encrypt ion t echnique designed t o give t he user about t he sam e am ount of privacy t hat
he would expect from a LAN. WEP is a securit y prot ocol for wireless local area net works
( WLANs) defined in t he 802.11b st andard. WEP is designed t o provide t he sam e level of securit y
as t hat of a wired LAN. WEP aim s t o provide securit y by dat a over radio waves so t hat it is
prot ect ed as it is t ransm it t ed from one end point t o anot her.
WEP Key

charact ers.
The hex key m ust be 10 hexadecim al charact ers ( 0 - 9, A- F) for 64 - bit WEP or 26 hexadecim al
charact ers ( 0 - 9, A- F) for 128- bit WEP.

This is a securit y enhancem ent t hat st rongly increases t he level of dat a prot ect ion and access
cont rol t o a wireless net work. WPA is an int erim st andard t hat will be replaced wit h t he I EEE's
802.11i st andard upon it s com plet ion. WPA consist s of RC4 and TKI P and provides support for
BSS ( I nfrast ruct ure) m ode only. WPA and WPA2 are com pat ible.
WPA2* ( Wi - Fi
Prot ect ed
Access 2)
This is t he second generat ion of WPA t hat com plies wit h t he I EEE TGi specificat ion. WPA2
consist s of AES encrypt ion, pre- aut hent icat ion and PMKI D caching. I t provides support for BSS
( I nfrast ruct ure) m ode and I BSS ( ad hoc) m ode. WPA and WPA2 are com pat ible.
WPA- Ent erprise Wi- Fi Prot ect ed Access- Ent erprise applies t o corporat e users. A new st andards- based,
int eroperable securit y t echnology for wireless LAN ( subset of I EEE 802.11i draft st andard) t hat
encrypt s dat a sent over radio waves. WPA is a Wi- Fi st andard t hat was designed t o im prove

I m proved dat a encrypt ion t hrough t he t em poral key int egrit y prot ocol ( TKI P) . TKI P uses a
hashing algorit hm t o scram ble t he encrypt ion keys and adds an int egrit y - checking feat ure
t o ensure t hat t he keys have not been t am pered wit h.
User aut hent icat ion, which is generally m issing in WEP, t hrough t he ext ensible
aut hent icat ion prot ocol ( EAP) . WEP regulat es access t o a wireless net work based on a
com put er's hardware- specific MAC address, which is relat ively sim ple t o be sniffed out and
st olen. EAP is built on a m ore secure public- key encrypt ion syst em t o ensure t hat only
aut horized net work users can access t he net work.
WPA is an int erim st andard t hat will be replaced wit h t he I EEE's 802.11i st andard upon it s

WPA- Personal
Wi- Fi Prot ect ed Access- Personal provides a level of securit y in t he sm all net work or hom e

WPA- PSK ( Wi Fi Prot ect edAccess Pre Shared Key)
WPA- PSK m ode does not use an aut hent icat ion server. I t can be used wit h t he dat a encrypt ion
t ypes WEP or TKI P. WPA- PSK requires configurat ion of a pre- shared key ( PSK) . You m ust ent er
a pass phrase or 64 hex charact ers for a pre- shared key of lengt h 256- bit s. The dat a encrypt ion
key is derived from t he PSK.
