Chapter 4 MC3Lite System MaintenanceRegularly perform these basic maintenance procedures to ensure optimal performance ofyour Mobile Collection hardware system.•Inspecting Antenna Connectors and Cables on page 39•Inspecting the Antenna Base and Whip on page 39•Cleaning the Antenna on page 40•Replacing the Antenna Gasket on page 40Inspecting the Antenna Connectors and CablesThe connections and cables to the radio typically experience the most wear. Manycustomers remove the radio on a daily basis. Removing and installing the connectors dailycan cause the cable and connector to begin separating. This is considered normal wear andtear. The coax cables (used in the magnetic mount base) can be damaged if they areaccidentally pinched in a window or door jamb. Any damage to the coax cables or theconnectors leads to decreased read performance and transmitter failures due to highreflected power.Create a regular maintenance schedule and inspect the following.•Coax cables.◦ Ensure the cable is not loose from the connector.◦ Inspect for hard kinks or bends in the cable, which can cause an electrical short.◦ Inspect for cuts or nicks in the cable.•Coax shield. Do not expose the shield at the connector or anywhere along the cable.•Connector. The center pin of the connector should not be recessed or pushed in to theconnector housing.Replace the entire antenna base if the cables or connectors are damaged. Contact ItronSupport Service if you need any assistance.Inspecting the Antenna Base and WhipThe antenna whip is the radiating element that both transmits and receives the signals forthe Mobile Collection System. The whip attaches to a base. The base is either mountedthrough the roof of the vehicle, or is a magnet mount. Moisture can build up between thebase and the whip. This moisture buildup leads to oxidation and corrosion which results in aloss of signal quality. Evidence of moisture buildup (oxidation) is usually light and hazy inappearance. The appearance of darker areas or spots indicates a more severe conditionwhich may lead to corrosion.MC3Lite Vehicle Preparation and Hardware Installation Guide TDC-1548-002 39Proprietary and Confidential
To inspect the antenna base and whip1. Create a maintenance schedule and look for the following.• Oxidation, corrosion, and dirt on the antenna base.• Oxidation, corrosion, and dirt on the whip.• Missing contact element in the whip.• Loose or damaged coax cable at the antenna base.• Missing or damaged O-ring gasket.2. Use a good contact cleaner to clean the area if oxidation or corrosion is found. Follow-upwith a good conductive protectant. Contact Itron Support Service if you need anyassistance.Cleaning the AntennaRegular cleaning is recommended to maintain both the performance and the appearance ofyour omni-directional RF antenna.• Clean the antenna in the same manner as your vehicle. Apply a quality car wax to theantenna and base to help protect the finish and extend the life of the antenna.Replacing the Antenna GasketInspect the gasket regularly to verify that it is intact, free from debris, and properly seals theantenna and base. To maintain the integrity and performance of the antenna, Itronrecommends that you replace the gasket located in the antenna base minimally once ayear. For more information about ordering the gasket, log onto Itron Acess or contact ItronSupport Services at 1-877-487-6602. The replacement gasket part number isMSE-0210-001, which includes six gaskets. To replace the antenna gasket1. Turn the antenna counter-clockwise to remove it from the base.2. Remove the gasket (1) from the base (2).MC3Lite System MaintenanceMC3Lite Vehicle Preparation and Hardware Installation Guide TDC-1548-002 40Proprietary and Confidential
3. Place a new gasket on the base and push it firmly into place.4. Ensure that the gasket is level with the antenna base to prevent pinching when theantenna is reconnected.5. Reconnect the antenna to the base by turning it clockwise until it is firmly seated on thebase.MC3Lite System MaintenanceMC3Lite Vehicle Preparation and Hardware Installation Guide TDC-1548-002 41Proprietary and Confidential
