Do not remove screws, covers or cabinet. 2. Do not expose this appliance to rain or moisture. CAUTION The F button in any position does not disconnect the mains line. Disconnect the mains plug to shut the power off completely (the STANDBY lamp goes off). The MAINS plug or an appliance coupler is used as the disconnect device, the disconnect device shall remain readily operable. • When the system is on standby, the STANDBY lamp lights red. • When the system is turned on, the STANDBY lamp goes off. The power can be remote controlled. CAUTION • Do not block the ventilation openings or holes. (If the ventilation openings or holes are blocked by a newspaper or cloth, etc., the heat may not be able to get out.) • Do not place any naked flame sources, such as lighted candles, on the apparatus. • When discarding batteries, environmental problems must be considered and local rules or laws governing the disposal of these batteries must be followed strictly. • Do not expose this apparatus to rain, moisture, dripping or splashing and that no objects filled with liquids, such as vases, shall be placed on the apparatus. Some buttons on the main unit are the same as those on the remote control. Remote control sensor * The [AM LOOP] terminal is provided only on the model for the United Kingdom. ■Activating the buttons on the main unit ■Opening the front cover Before using the buttons on the main unit, place your hand over the front of the main unit. The buttons, controls and indicators gradually start illuminating. To use the buttons and terminals concealed under the front cover, use your finger to pull open the part indicated with [2 PULL OPEN]. ■Using the ¢/4 and [VOL +/–] controls To operate the ¢/4 control on the right front of the main unit, vertically slide your finger on the area between ¢ and 4. B Timer indicators • The indicator lights up when the playback timer is ready or being set. • The “1”, “2” or “3” indicator lights up when the playback timer is ready or working, and flashes when the playback timer is being set. • The “SLEEP” indicator lights up when the sleep timer is activated. C The “REC” indicator lights up when recording starts. D The “C.VOICE” indicator lights up when the clear voice function is activated. E The “PG” or “PL” indicator lights up when an original program or play list is selected. F The “PRGM” indicator lights up when the program playback function is activated. Disabling the demonstration display When you connect the power cable into the AC outlet, the demonstration display automatically starts in the display window. Before using this system, turn off the demonstration display. Inserting the batteries into the remote control Insert the batteries into the remote control by matching the polarity (+ and −) correctly. R03 (UM-4)/AAA (24F) type dry-cell batteries (supplied) • If the range or effectiveness of the remote control decreases, replace both batteries. Operating the system from the remote control Point the remote control directly at the front of the main unit. • Do not block the remote control sensor on the main unit. Operating a TV manufactured by JVC using the remote control You can use the remote control of this system to operate a TV manufactured by JVC. Remote control button [AUDIO/TV F] + [SHIFT]* [TV/VIDEO] [– TV CH]/[TV CH+] + [SHIFT]* [VOLUME ]/ [VOLUME ] Usage Turns on/off the TV. Changes between the TV and video input. Changes channels. Connecting the antennas AM loop antenna (supplied) [Only for the United Kingdom] FM antenna (supplied) FM antenna Main unit (rear view) Stretch out the FM antenna to the best position for radio reception. Setting up the AM loop antenna When radio reception with the supplied FM antenna is poor, or when using a communal antenna Main unit (rear view) If insulation covers the tips of the antenna cable, twist and pull off the insulation. NOTE • Keep the AM loop antenna cable wrapped around the AM loop antenna frame, otherwise the effectiveness and sensitivity of the AM loop antenna may be reduced. Connecting the AM loop antenna Main unit (rear view) Antenna cable (not supplied) Communal antenna terminal or Converter (not supplied: compatible with 300 C/75 C) Outdoor FM antenna (not supplied) Coaxial cable (not supplied) Depending on the radio reception conditions, an FM feeder antenna (not supplied: compatible with 300 C) can be used. In this case, a converter (not supplied) is required. • When using an antenna other than those supplied with this system, refer to the operation manuals for the antenna and converter for details of connection. Turn the AM loop antenna to find the best position for radio reception. NOTE • Make sure that the antenna conductors do not touch any other terminals. This could cause poor reception. • When positioning the antennas, find the best position for reception while listening to an actual radio program (refer to “Listening to radio broadcasts” on page 16). • You cannot receive a radio broadcast without the antenna connection. 6 Preparation Preparation UX-GN7V[B]-03.fm Page 7 Thursday, January 29, 2009 1:16 PM Preparation Preparation (continued) Do not connect the power cable until all other connections have been made. Connecting the speakers Connect the speakers to the main unit by connecting the colored cables to the same color terminals on the rear of the main unit. Right speaker (rear view) Left speaker (rear view) Speaker cable Red Black If insulation covers the tips of the speaker cables, twist and pull off the insulation before connecting the speaker cables. Main unit (rear view) ■ IMPORTANT • Improper speaker cable connection reduces the stereo effect and sound quality. • The supplied speakers are magnetically shielded, but color irregularity may occur on the TV depending on some conditions. To prevent color irregularity, set up the speakers following the instructions below. 1. Turn off the main power of the TV before setting up the speakers. 2. Place the speakers enough distance from the TV so that they do not cause color irregularity on the TV. 3. Wait for approximately 30 minutes before turning on the main power of the TV again. 7 CAUTION • The supplied speakers are manufactured exclusively for use with the supplied main unit as parts of this system. Do not connect the supplied speakers to devices other than the supplied main unit. Doing so may damage the speakers. • Do not connect external speakers together with the supplied speakers. Main unit (front view) Input To a video input terminal Composite video cable (not supplied) Stereo mini plug cable (not supplied) To an audio output terminal (such as a headphone terminal) NOTE • When you want to listen to sound from a TV, connect the TV to the [AV] terminal as well as the [VIDEO] terminal. Output Portable digital audio player or other audio device ■ IMPORTANT • Connect the main unit directly to a TV (or a monitor) without routing through a video cassette recorder (VCR). Otherwise picture distortion may occur during playback. (Routing the connection through a VCR, however, does not affect the audio quality.) Main unit VCR TV (or monitor) Direct connection • Connecting the main unit to a VCR-built-in-TV may also cause picture distortion during playback. 9 Connecting an external digital audio device Main unit (rear view) Output Optical digital cable (not supplied) Connecting a subwoofer When you connect this system with an amplifierbuilt-in subwoofer (not supplied), you can enjoy a more dynamic bass sound. Refer to the manual of the subwoofer for details. Audio cable (not supplied) (Use the audio cable supplied with the amplifier-built-in subwoofer or a commercially available cable.) Amplifier-built-in subwoofer (not supplied) Main unit (rear view) To an optical digital input terminal Input AV amplifier with a built-in decoder NOTE • Before connecting or disconnecting an external device, press [VOLUME ] repeatedly to set the volume of this system to the minimum. You can also use the [VOL –] control on the main unit. • Select the appropriate setting for “DIGITAL AUDIO OUTPUT” according to the connected device. Refer to page 37. • You can output the audio signal from the [OPTICAL DIGITAL OUTPUT] terminal when “DVD/CD” is selected as the source in the display window. Selecting the video signal type To view an image on the TV screen, select the video signal type correctly according to the TV after connecting the main unit to the TV. 1 Turn on the main unit. 2 Press [SCAN MODE] repeatedly to select the video signal type suitable for the TV. • Refer to “Turning on/off the main unit” on page 12. • You can select “RGB”, “Y/C” or “PROGRE”. • Select “RGB” when a TV compatible with composite video signals is connected to the [AV] terminal. • Select “Y/C” when a TV compatible with Svideo signals is connected to the [AV] terminal. • Select “PROGRE” when a TV compatible with progressive scanning is connected to the [COMPONENT] terminals. 3 11 Press [ENTER/SET]. Number buttons • The power of the main unit turns on and the [STANDBY] lamp on the main unit turns off. • Press [AUDIO/TV F] (or F on the main unit) again to turn off the power of the main unit. (The main unit enters the standby mode.) • With the power off, pressing [DVD/CD 6], [USB 6], [TUNER], [AUDIO IN/TV] (or [AUDIO IN] on the main unit) or 0 also turns on the main unit. The function assigned to the pressed button starts working at the same time. Adjusting the volume Press [VOLUME ] or [VOLUME ] repeatedly. • You can also adjust the volume by using the [VOL +/–] control on the main unit. Turning off the sound temporarily Press [FADE MUTING]. Using the number buttons Examples: 5: [5] 15: [ 10] → [1] → [5] 150: [ 10] → [ 10] → [1] → [5] → [0] • Press [FADE MUTING] again to restore the sound. Selecting the sound mode A combination of JVC sound technologies enables you to select the desired sound pattern. This function is called “sound mode”. Press [SOUND MODE] repeatedly. • Each time you press [SOUND MODE], the display changes as follows. - “ROCK”: For acoustic sound. - “POP”: For vocal oriented music. - “CLASSIC”: For classic music. - “JAZZ”: For jazz music. * - “REGGAE”: For slow rhythm. * - “SALSA”: For salsa music. * - “SAMBA”: For samba music. * - “FLAT”: Cancels the sound mode. * Selecting these items provides a surround effect. 12 Basic operations Basic operations UX-GN7V[B].book Page 13 Friday, January 16, 2009 3:41 PM Basic operations Basic operations (continued) Customizing the equalization pattern Audible sound frequencies vary according to the individual. This function creates the appropriate equalization pattern according to your hearing preferences. This function is called “My Sound”. ■When a disc/file is stopped 1 Hold down [MY SOUND]. TV screen NOTE • You can cancel the setting by pressing [MY SOUND]. Selecting the preset equalization pattern Press [MY SOUND]. • Each time you press [MY SOUND], the preset equalization pattern changes. • To deactivate the stored equalization pattern, select “OFF”. NOTE • When you change the source to a radio broadcast, TV sound or device connected to the [AUDIO IN] terminal, this function temporarily deactivates. Locking disc ejection You can lock the disc tray to prevent the disc from being ejected. Setting the disc ejection lock Main unit (front view) ■When the main unit is turned off Press [ECO/DIMMER] repeatedly. • Each time you press [ECO/DIMMER], the display changes as follows. - Selecting the normal display turns on the clock display and activates the buttons on the main unit. - Selecting “DISP OFF” turns off the clock display and activates the buttons on the main unit. - Selecting “ECO ON” turns off the clock display and deactivates the buttons on the main unit. NOTE • You can use the remote control in any of the above cases. • “ECO” refers to “ecology”. Auto standby function If no sound is produced for 3 minutes, the main unit automatically turns off. This function is available when a loaded disc or a connected USB device is selected as the source. Activating the auto standby function ■When a loaded disc or a connected USB device is selected as the source Press [AUTO STBY]. • The “A.STBY” lights up in the display window. • Each time you press [AUTO STBY], the setting turns on and off. Performance of the auto standby function When playback of a loaded disc or a connected USB device finishes, the auto standby function starts a countdown. At this time, the “A.STBY” indicator starts flashing. CAUTION • It should be noted that it may be unlawful to re-record pre-recorded tapes, records, or discs without the consent of the owner of copyright in the sound or video recording, broadcast or cable program and in any literary, dramatic musical, or artistic work embodied therein. • A track from a CD is digitally recorded and converted into an MP3 file. NOTE Recording all tracks from a CD to a USB device 1 • Refer to pages 20 and 21. 2 3 4 • This chapter collectively describes “file” as “track”, and “folder” as “group”. The Serial Copy Management System (SCMS) protects copyright and allows only firstgeneration digital copies from the digitally recordable source. • Changes to the volume during recording do not affect the recorded sound or the recorded sound level. • The sound adjustment functions of this system do not affect the recorded sound. • Operating this function automatically cancels random and repeat playback. CAUTION • Do not bump or move the main unit while recording sound. Such movement may interfere with recording. Take care especially when “WAIT” appears in the display window. • Do not disconnect the USB device during recording, as this may cause malfunction. Recording only one track Instead of step 3 on page 39, start playback of the desired track. • You can use the number buttons, 4 or ¢ to select a track. • Finishing step 6 returns playback to the beginning of the current track and only that track is recorded. Condensation Under the following conditions, you may not be able to operate this system properly due to condensation formed on the lens of the main unit: • When you have just started an air conditioner to warm your room • When you have placed the main unit at an area with high humidity • When you have moved the main unit from a cold place to a warm place When condensation forms, leave the main unit turned on, wait for approximately 1 or 2 hours, and then operate the main unit. Notes on handling Reference Suitable locations for the main unit Important cautions Installation of the system • Select a place that is level, dry and neither too hot nor too cold, and between 5°C and 35°C. • Leave sufficient distance between the system and the TV. • Do not use the system in a place subject to vibration. Power cable • Do not handle the power cable with wet hands! • A small amount of power is always consumed while the power cable is connected to the wall outlet. • When unplugging the power cable from the wall outlet, always pull on the plug, not the power cable. To prevent malfunctions of the system • There are no user-serviceable parts inside. If anything goes wrong, unplug the power cable and consult your dealer. • Do not insert any metallic object into the system. Note about copyright laws Check the copyright laws in your country before recording from CDs. Recording of copyrighted material may infringe copyright laws. Cleaning the main unit When the operation panel becomes dirty, dust it with a soft dry cloth. When the operation panel is very dirty, wipe it with a cloth dampened with a small amount of a neutral detergent, and then wipe it with a soft dry cloth. CAUTION • Do not wipe the operation panel with thinners, benzenes or other chemical agents. Do not spray insecticides onto the operation panel. Discs with CPRM content protection are not playable on this system. *2 This system may not recognize some USB devices. Examples: If a DVD VIDEO with an improper region code number is loaded, playback cannot start. • On some DVD VIDEOs, VCDs, SVCDs or DivX files, their actual operation may be different from what is explained in this manual. (Refer to page 8 for connecting a SCART cable.) 50 UX-GN7V[B].book Page 51 Friday, January 16, 2009 3:41 PM Reference Notes on discs/files (continued) Unplayable discs • The following discs cannot be played back: • DVD-ROM (except for MP3, WMA, JPEG, ASF, DivX, MPEG1 or MPEG2 format), DVD-RAM, CD-ROM, CD-I (CD-I Ready), Photo CD, SACD, etc. • Playing back these discs generates noise and may damage the speakers. • Damaged discs and discs with an unusual shape (other than a disc of 12 cm or 8 cm in diameter) cannot be played back. • JVC does not guarantee the operation and sound quality of discs not authorized by CD-DA, which is a CD specification. Before playback, confirm that the disc complies with this CD specification by checking the symbols and reading notes printed on the package. Playable MP3, WMA, WAV, JPEG, ASF, DivX, MPEG1 and MPEG2 discs and files • CDs recorded in the format of ISO 9660 level 1 or level 2 are playable (except CDs recorded in the “packet write” format (UDF format)). • Files with an extension of “.mp3”, “.wma”, “.wav”, “.jpg”, “.jpeg”, “.asf”, “.divx”, “.div”, “.avi”, “.mpg”, “.mpeg” or “.mod” (extensions with mixed cases are also acceptable) are playable. 51 Notes on MP3, WMA, WAV, JPEG and ASF discs and files • A disc may not be played back, or reading it may take a long time depending on its recording conditions or properties. • The time needed for reading varies with the number of groups or tracks (files) recorded on the disc. • If characters other than single-byte alphanumeric characters are used in the file name of an MP3, WMA, WAV, JPEG or ASF file, the track/ file name is not displayed correctly. • The order of tracks/groups displayed on the MP3, WMA or WAV menu screen, and the order of files/groups displayed on the JPEG menu screen may be different from that of files/folders displayed on a computer monitor screen. • Playing back an MP3 or WMA file that contains a still image may take a long time. The elapsed time is not displayed until playback starts. This elapsed time may not be displayed correctly. • When playing back an MP3 or WMA file, a disc with a sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz and transmission rate of 128 kbps is recommended. This system cannot playback a file whose transmission rate is less than 64 kbps. • This system is not compatible with an MP3i or MP3PRO file. • This system can play back a baseline JPEG file, excluding monochromatic JPEG files. • This system can play back JPEG data taken with a digital camera. • If data has been processed, edited or restored with computer image editing software, the data may not be displayed. • This system cannot play back animations such as MOTION JPEG files, still pictures (TIFF etc.) other than JPEG files, or image data with sound. • The resolution of 640 x 480 pixels is recommended for JPEG files. If a file has been recorded at a resolution of more than 640 x 480 pixels, it may take a long time to display the file. An image with a resolution of more than 8192 x 7680 pixels cannot be displayed. • The system supports ASF files recorded with the maximum bit rate of 384 kbps and an audio coder decoder of G.726. • A WAV file with a sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz and a quantization bit rate of 16-bit linear PCM is recommended. Notes on DivX discs/files • The system supports all versions of DivX® including DivX® 6. • The system supports DivX files with a resolution of 720 x 480 pixels or less (30 fps) and 720 x 576 pixels or less (25 fps). • Audio streams should conform to MPEG1 Audio Layer-2, MPEG Audio Layer-3 (MP3) or Dolby Digital. • The system does not support GMC (Global Motion Compression). • Files encoded in the interlaced scanning mode may not be played back correctly. • Playing back a DivX file may take a long time. The elapsed time is not displayed until playback starts. The elapsed time may also not be displayed correctly. Notes on MPEG1 and MPEG2 discs and files • The stream structure of MPEG1 and MPEG2 discs and files should conform to MPEG system or program stream. • 720 x 576 pixels (25 fps) or 720 x 480 pixels (30 fps) is recommended for the highest resolution. • This system also supports the resolutions of 352 x 576, 480 x 576 and 352 x 288 pixels (25 fps) and 352 x 480, 480 x 480 and 352 x 240 pixels (30 fps). • The profile and level should be MP@ML (Main Profile at Main Level), SP@ML (Simple Profile at Main Level) or MP@LL (Main Profile at Low Level). • Audio streams should conform to MPEG1 Audio Layer-2, MPEG2 Audio Layer-2 or Dolby Digital (MPEG2 files only). Notes on files recorded on a connected USB device • This system is compatible with USB 2.0 FullSpeed. • This system may not play back some USB devices and some files. • This system does not support DRM (Digital Rights Management). • This system cannot recognize a USB device whose rating exceeds 5V/500mA. • When connecting a USB device, refer also to its manual. • Connect the USB device directly to the main unit without routing through a USB hub. • Disconnect the USB device after stopping playback or turning off this system. Otherwise, this may cause malfunction of this system and the USB device. • The main unit cannot charge a USB device. • Always set the volume to the minimum on this system when connecting or disconnecting a USB device. • JVC bears no responsibility for any loss of data on the USB device while using this system. Caution for DualDisc playback The Non-DVD side of a “DualDisc” does not comply with the “Compact Disc Digital Audio” standard.
