This battery pack can be01purchased separately.1. Remove the belt clip by pushing up on it whilepulling on the battery clip tab.2. Remove the battery cover by sliding it down.If using standardalkaline batteries:3. Insert 4 "AAA"alkaline batterieswith the polaritiesas shown.4. Replace the batterycover and belt clip.If using the GE/SanyoRechargeable BatteryPack :(GES-NCF FR)013. Insert the rechargeable batterypack making sure that the metalcontacts are facing out (toward the battery cover).4. Replace the battery cover and belt clip.IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE THAT YOU USE ONLYTHE RECHARGEABLE BATTERY PACK THAT ISSPECIFIED ABOVE (GES-NCF FR). USING01ANOTHER MAY NOT WORK AS THE UNIT ISDESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR IT.If using the special rechargeable batterypack, you can purchase the GE WirelessIntercom (GE5811-WCOM), whichis equipped with two convenientcharging cradles. You can havemultiple handheld units andintercoms to complete yourfamily communicationsneeds. The units will allcommunicate with eachother as long as they are set to the same channeland subcode (see andSETTING THE CHANNELSETTING THE SUBCODE for more information).CAUTION: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RECHARGEALKALINE BATTERIES. KEEP THE HANDHELDUNITS OUT OF THE CHARGING CRADLES WHENUSING STANDARD BATTERIES.IMPORTANT: Remove batteries before storingthe Handheld 2-Way Radio for extended periods.Batteries corrode over time and may causepermanent damage to the unit. Different typesof batteries or new and used batteries shouldnot be mixed. Exhausted batteries should beremoved from the unit and disposed of properly.TURNING THE RADIO ON AND OFF1. , press and hold theTo turn the radio on POWERbutton. The radio willemit a short tone and the LCD screen will go blank.ADJUSTING THE VOLUMEThe speaker volume level is indicated by the numberof bars on the symbol displayed on thetop right portion of the LCD screen.1. Press the button to increase the volumeand the button to decrease the volume.TRANSMITTING/RECEIVING - TALKINGTO OTHERS IN YOUR GROUPTo communicate with others in your group,all members must have their units configuredto the same channel and subcode (see SETTINGTHE CHANNEL SETTING THE SUBCODEandfor more information).When the radio is on and not transmitting, theunit is in the standby mode. When you receivea signal from another member in your group, thesymbol will be displayed on the LCD.To send a signal:1. Press and hold the button to transmit.TALKThe Transmit Indicator will light RED and thesymbol will be displayed on the LCD.2. While holding the button, speak in anormalTALKvoice holding the unit approximately 6inches away.3. Release the TALK button when you havefinished speaking.IMPORTANT: To ensure that part of yourcommunication is not cut off, allow a short pauseafter pressing and before releasing the TALKbutton when speaking. Do notuse cleaners or solvents on the radio as they canharm the body and leak inside, causing permanentthat a call transmission is taking place.2. All nearby radios operating on the samechannel and subcode will emit a page tone.VOICE-ACTIVATED TRANSMISSIONThe Handheld 2-Way Radio is equipped with avoice-activated transmission mode (hands-freemode). The unit will transmit voice signals (andother loud sounds) without having to press theTALK button.1. Press the button repeatedly until theMENUsymbol flashes on the LCD.2. Use the button to enable voice activatedtransmission and the button to disable it.3. Press the button to confirm the selectionTALKand return to the standby mode.KEY LOCKThis function prevents unintended setting changesby locking all buttons. YOU WILLIMPORTANT:NOT BE ABLE TO CHANGE THE CHANNEL,SUBCODE , VOICE-ACTIVATED TRANSMISSIONon the LCD for three full seconds, indicatingchannel and leave the scan mode, or pressor to continue scanning for other activechannels.3. Press the button again to stop scanning.SCANMONITORING CHANNELSBy pressing the button, you are able toMONITOR'listen' to all traffic or noise active on the currentchannel, regardless of signal strength and subcodesettings. For continuous monitoring, press andhold the button for at least three seconds.MONITORTo deactivate continuous monitoring, press theMONITOR button again.CALLThe Handheld 2-Way Radio is equipped with acall feature that allows you to alert another party.In order for the call feature to work, all radiosmust be on.1. In addition to the 14 channels,the units are equipped with 38 selectablesubcodes. To speak with others in your group,all members must have their units configuredto the same channel and subcode.SETTING THE CHANNEL1. Press the button to confirm the channelTALKselection and return to the standby mode.SETTING THE SUBCODESubcodes help filter interference and noise from8When a subcode is activated, the unit ignoressignals that are set to a different subcode. Thus,a group can communicate on a 'noisy' channelusing the subcode feature. The feature is perfectfor areas with heavy usage (e.g. construction zones)in which all 14 channels may be occupied.1.
