MAINTENANCE

Neveroperatethis machinewithoutgood visibilityor light.Always
be sureof yourfootingand keepa firm hold on the handles.
Keepbystandersawayfrom the machinewhileit isinoperation.
Stopthe machineif anyoneentersthe area.
Be carefulwhentilling in hard ground.Thetines maycatchin the
groundand propelthe tillerforward.If this occurs,let go of the
handlebarsand do not restrainthe machine.

ATTACHING

THE HANDLE

ASSEMBLY

Installthe handleontothetiller usingthe hardwarepreinstalled
on the handlemountingbrackets.This consistsof a 5/16-18x
3.00"hex bolt,a handlecrankassembly,retainerbracketand two
5/16-18flangelock nuts. Removethis hardwarefromthe handle
mountingbracketson the tiller.Referto Figure1 inset.

Insertthe handleintothe handlemountingbrackets,lining up the
pre-drilledholes. Insertthe5/16-18x 3.00" hexbolt in the bottom
hole fromthe left handside throughto the otherside. Placethe
round holeend of the hex retainerbracketoverthe hexbolt and

securelooselywith a bell washerand 5/16-18flangelock nut
removedearlier.Referto Figure1 inset.
NOTE:Thebell washershouldbe positionedwith the top of the bell
shapetowardsthe hexnutwhich will createtensionand furthersecure
theflange lock nutonce tightened.Donot tightenthis hardwareatthis
time.

ATTACHING

Installthe handle-crankadjustmentrod intothe top hole of the
mountingbracketfrom the left hand sideof the handleassembly,
securewith the otherflangelock nut previouslyremoved.Fit
the hexend of the retainerbracketoverthe flangelock nut. See
Figure1.

Routethe two cables alongthe handleassemblyon the righthand
side.

Connectthe reversecable(Red)to the reversecablecontrolby
feedingthez-hookthroughthe holeon the reversecablecontrol
from the insidetowardstheoutside.See Figure2.
Connecttheforwarddrivecable(Black) to the clutchbail by
feedingthez-hookthroughthe holeon the clutchbail fromthe
outsidetowardsthe inside. See Figure2.

Tightenthe hexbolt installedin Step2 at this time. Be carefulnot
to overtightenthis hardware.
Withthe handlein the desiredposition,tighten the handlecrank
adjustmentrod at this time.

THE CABLES

NOTE:Testthefunctionof the reverseclutchby pullingthe reverse
handleand releasingit. The handleshouldreturnto its neutral
position.If it doesn't,contactCustomerSupportforassistanceor the
nearestdealer.
Totest the functionof the forwarddrivebail, lift the bail to the handle
and releaseit. The bail shouldreturnto its neutralposition.If it doesn't,
contactCustomerSupportfor assistanceor the nearestdealer.

Snapthe cablehousingclips intothe handleassemblycable
mount.The red clip (reversecable)fits into thetop positionon the
handleassembly,whilethe black clip (forward/clutchcable)feeds
intothe lowerpositionon the handleassembly.See Figure3.
Clipthe cables intothe cableguideslocatedon the handle
assemblypanelas seenin Figure4.

MOVING

THE TILLER

OFF THE SKID

Toroll the tiller off the shippingplatform,putthe wheelsin freewheel,if
they are notalreadyfromthe factory,as follows:
1. Placea sturdyblock underthe transmissionto raiseone wheel
about1"off theground.Removetheclick pin from the wheelhub
and wheelshaft. See Figure5.
2.

Slide thewheelfully inwardon the wheelshaft. Reinstallthe click
pin throughthe wheelshaftonly (notthroughthe wheelhub).See
Figure5. The wheelshouldnowspinfreely (freewheel)on the
wheelshaft. Repeatwith the otherwheel.
Use the handlebarto lift and pull thetiller backwardsto a flat
area.

NOTE:Beforestartingthe engine,the wheelsmustbe placedin the
WHEELDRIVEposition(pins throughwheelhubsand wheelshaft).
This procedureis describedin the operationsectionunderwheeldrive
pins.

RECOIL

STARTER

The operationof anytiller can resultinforeignobjectsbeingthrown
intothe eyes,which can damageyoureyesseverely.Alwayswear
safetyglassesduringoperationor whileperforminganyadjustments
or repairs.

HANDLE

This handleis usedto startthe engine.See Figure5.

THROTTLE

CHOKE

CONTROL

Thethrottlecontrolis locatedon thefront of theengine.It regulatesthe
spreadof the engineand will shut off theenginewhen movedintothe
STOPposition.See Figure5.

CONTROL

The chokecontrolis activatedby movingthe leverto the CHOKE
position.Activatingthe chokecontrol closesthe choke plateon the
carburetorand aids in startingthe engine.
RUN

Yourfiller's tinesare a series of hoesarrangedon a revolvingpowerdrivenshaft. See Figure5.

Eachwheelis equippedwith a wheeldriveclickpin that securesthe
wheelto the wheelshaft.The wheelscan be positionedineithera
WHEELDRIVEor a FREEWHEELmode. See Figure5.

Althoughmulti-viscosityoils (5W30, 10W30,etc.)improvestarting
in coldweather,theywill result in increasedoil consumptionwhen
usedabove32°RCheckyourengineoil levelmorefrequentlyto avoid
possibleenginedamagefrom runninglowon oil.
1. Checkthe oil levelmakingcertain notto rubthe dipstickalong
the insidewallsof the oil fill tube.This would resultin a false
dipstickreading.Wipedipstickcleanwith cloth. Replacedipstick
into theoil fillerneck, butdo not screwit in. Removeand check

THE HANDLE

HEIGHT

Thehandle shouldbe adjustedso that whenthe tillerisdigging3-4"
intothe soil, the handlefalls to aboutwaste-high.Toadjusthandle,
simplyloosenthe handleadjustmentcrank,movethe handleto the
desiredheightand retightenthe adjustmentcrank.See Figure11.

Beforeclearingthe tines by hand,stopthe engine,allowall moving
parts to stop and disconnectthe spark plugwire. Failureto follow this
warningcould resultin personalinjury.

CLEARING

THE TINES

Thetines havea self-clearingactionwhich eliminatesmostof the
tanglingof debris. However,occasionallydry grass,stringystalks
or toughvines may becometangled.Followthese proceduresto
help avoidtanglingand to clearthe tines,if necessary.

Toreducetangling,set the depth regulatordeep enoughto get
maximum"chopping"actionas the tines chopthe materialagainst
the ground.Also,try to till under crop residuesor covercrops
whilethey are green,moistand tender.
Whiletilling,try swayingthe handlebarsfrom sideto side (about
6"to 12").This "fishtailing"actionoften clears the tinesof debris.

forward,the tines rotatebackward.This createsan "uppercut"
tineaction whichdigs deeply,uprootingsoiland weeds.Don't
overloadthe engine,butdig as deeplyas possibleon eachpass
On later passes,the wheelsmay tendto spin inthe soft dirt. Help
them alongby lifting up slightlyon the handlebar(one hand,palm
up,worksmosteasily).

Avoidthe temptationto pushdownon the handlebarsin an
attemptto forcethe tiller to dig deeper.Doingso takestheweight
off the poweredwheels,causingthem to losetraction.Withoutthe
wheelsto hold the tillerback,the tines willattemptto propelthe
tillerbackward,towardsthe operator.

Whencultivating(breakingup the surfacesoil aroundthe plants
to destroyweeds,See Figure12),adjust the tinesto dig only 1"
to 2" deep.Usingthe shallowtillingdepth helpspreventinjuryto
the plantswhoseroots oftengrowclose to the surface.If needed,
lift up on the handlebarsslightlyto preventthe tinesfrom digging
too deeply.(Cultivatingon a regularbasis notonly eliminates
weeds,it alsoloosensand aeratesthesoil for bettermoisture

Choosing
the Correct Wheel & Tine Speeds
Withexperience,youwill findthe tillingdepthand tilling speed
combinationthat isbest for yourgarden.Setthe enginethrottleleverat
a speedto givethe engineadequatepowerand yet allowitto operate
at the slowestpossiblespeeduntilyou haveachievedthe maximum

turnthe wheels.
Whengoingdownthe ramps,walkbackwardwith the tiller
followingyou. Keepalert for anyobstaclesbehindyou. Positiona
personat each wheelto controlthe speedof thetiller. Nevergo
downthe rampstiller-first,as the tiller couldtip forward.
Placewoodenblockson the downhillside of thewheels if you
need to stopthe tiller from rollingdownthe ramp.Also,use the
blocksto temporarilykeepthe tillerin placeon the ramps(if
necessary),and to chockthe wheelsin placeafter the tilleris in
the vehicle.
After loadingthe tiller, preventit from rollingbyengagingthe
wheelsin the WHEELDRIVEposition.Chockthe wheelswith
blocksand securelytie thetiller down.

LUBRICATION
After every 10operatinghours,oil or greasethe lubricationpoints.Use
cleanlubricatingoil (#30 weightmotoroil is suitable)and cleangeneral

all partsto stopmovingand disconnectthe spark plugwire. Failure
to followthis instructioncouldresult in personalinjuryor property
damage.

BELT REPLACEMENT
If the drive beltor reversebeltneedsto be replaced,it is bestto
replacebothbeltsat the same time.Use onlya factoryauthorized
beltas an "over-the-counter"beltmay not performsatisfactorily.
The procedurerequiresaveragemechanicalability and commonly
availabletools.
To replacethe Driveand Reversebelts,follow thesesteps:
1.

Makesurethe tiller is on a flat surface,with the engineturned
off and the sparkplug wireunpluggedand groundedto prevent
unintendedfiringof the engine.

TINES
Thetines will wearwith useand shouldbe inspected
at the beginning
of eachtilling seasonand after every30 operatinghours.Thetines
can be replaced.Refertothe PartsList sectionof this manualfor part
numbers.

Tine inspection
With use,the tines will becomeshorter,narrowerand pointed.Badly
worntines will resultin a lossof tilling depth,and reducedeffectiveness whenchoppingup and turningunderorganicmatter.
Removing/Installing
a Tine Assembly
1. Removethefine shieldend coversand sideshieldsby removing
the threewingnuts on each sidethat securethem.
2. A fineassemblyconsistsof a left hand fineand a righthandtine.
NOTE:Thefine assemblymovesin a counter-rotatingmotionwith
the sharpedgesof the tines positionedto enterthe soil firstwhen
counter-rotating.Notethis positionof thetines for reinstallationof the
newtine assemblies.

Cotter Pin

Toremovea tine assembly,simplyremovethe cotterpin securing
the clevispin.See Figure28.

Removetheclevispin and slidethe assemblyto the outsideof
the unitand off of the tine shaft.

Beforereinstallingthe fineassembly,inspectthe fine shaftfor
rust, roughspotsor burrs.Lightlyfile or sand,as needed.Applya
thincoat of greaseto the shaft.

Installeachfineassemblyso that thecutting (sharp)edge of the
tines willenterthe soil firstwhenthe tiller movesforward.Keep
in mindthat thesetines are counter-rotating,so securethe fine
assemblyto the fine shaftusingthe clevispin and cotterpin.

PREPARING

THE ENGINE

Enginesstored between30 and 90 days needto be treatedwith a
gasolinestabilizerand enginesstoredover90 days needto be drained
of fuel to preventdeteriorationand gumfrom formingin fuel systemor
on essentialcarburetorparts.If the gasolinein yourenginedeterioratesduringstorage,you mayneed to havethecarburetor,and other
fuel systemcomponents,servicedor replaced.
1. Removeall fuel from tank by runningengine untilit stopsfrom
lack of fuel.
2.

Changethe oil. See ChangeEngineOil in SERVICEAND
MAINTENANCE
section.

Removespark plugand pourabouta 1/2ounceof engineoil into
the cylinder.Replacespark plug and crankit slowlyto distribute
oil.

Cleandebrisfrom aroundtheengine and the muffler.Touchup
any damagedpaint,and coat otherareasthat may rustwith a light
film of oil.

Storein a clean,dry and wellventilatedarea awayfromany appliancethat operateswith a flame or pilot light, suchas a furnace,
water heater,or clothesdryer.Alsoavoidany areawith a spark
producingelectricmotor,or wherepowertoolsare operated.
If possible,also avoidstorageareaswith high humidity,because
that promotesrust and corrosion.

THE TILLER

Whenthe tillerwon't be usedfor an extendedperiod,prepareit for
storageas follows:
1. Cleanthe tillerand engine.

Neverleaveengineunattendedwhileit is running.

failuresof WarrantedPartswhichare not original Sears partsor because
of abuse, neglector impropermaintenanceas setforth inthe Sears
EngineWarrantyPolicy.Sears is not liableto coverfailuresof Warranted
Partscausedby the use of add-on, non-original,or modifiedparts.

as requiredmaintenanceshallbe warrantedasto defectsonly forthe

replacementpart that is equivalentin performanceand durabilitymay

Look For Relevant Emissions Durability Period and
Air index information On Your Engine Emissions Label
Engines that are certified to meet the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Tier 2 Emission Standards must
display information regarding the Emissions Durability Period and the Air Index. Sears Brands Management
Corporation makes this information available to the consumer on our emission labels.
The Emissions Durability Period describes the number of hours of actual running time for which the engine is
certified to be emissions compliant, assuming proper maintenance in accordance with the Operating & Maintenance Instructions. The following categories are used:
Moderate:

Engine is certified

to be emission compliant

for 125 hours of actual engine running time.

Intermediate:

Engine is certified

to be emission compliant

for 250 hours of actual engine running time.

Extended:

Engine is certified

to be emission compliant

for 500 hours of actual engine running time.

For example, a typical walk-behind lawn mower is used 20 to 25 hours per year. Therefore, the Emissions
Durability Period of an engine with an intermediate rating would equate to 10 to 12 years.
The Air index is a calculated number describing the relative level of emissions for a specific engine family. The
lower the Air Index, the cleaner the engine. This information is displayed in graphical form on the emissions label.

hours for which the engine has been shown to meet Federal emission requirements.
