Hopper Handle 11 Control Panel 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Initial Firing Procedure IMPORTANT! To ensure proper functioning, perform the following procedure the first time the Grill is used or if it runs out of pellets during operation, or if the Grill is empty of pellets since the last time it was used. 1. WARNING! Before performing this step, make sure that the Power Switch is OFF (O) and that the Grill is completely cooled from any previous use. Open the Grill Barrel Lid. Remove the Warming Rack, Cooking Grate, Grease Drain Pan and Heat Baffle from inside the Grill Barrel. 2. Turn the Power Switch ON (l) and the Control Dial to Smoke. 3. Look into the Pellet Hopper to confirm that the Auger is turning. At the same time, place your fingers over the Firepot to feel air movement from the Fan. After several minutes you should feel the air movement increasing in warmth, 9. and see the temperature readout increase a few digits on the Control Panel display. WARNING! Never place your fingers into the Firepot, and do not touch any of the metal surfaces in the Firepot or Auger Housing area. They may be hot enough to burn you! If the Auger is turning, the Fan is moving air, the air becomes warmer and the temperature readout increases, turn the Control Dial to Shut Down Cycle. If the air movement does not become warmer and there is no increase in the temperature readout, the Heating Rod is malfunctioning. However, if the Auger and Fan are working, the Grill can still be used. Proceed to the Manual Lighting instructions in this Use & Care Guide. Otherwise, proceed as follows. Fill the Pellet Hopper with wood pellets. WARNING! Use only wood pellets of .25″ or less diameter and not longer than 1″. Never use heating fuel pellets in the Grill. Turn the Control Dial to High. Note: During the initial charging of the Auger, it will take time for the Pellets to travel from the Pellet Hopper to the Firepot. When the Pellets begin to fall into the Firepot, turn the Control Dial to Smoke. Let the Pellets come to full flame. Once you see flames come out of the Firepot, turn the Control Dial to Shut Down Cycle, and let the Grill cool down. After grill is fully cooled, position the Heat Baffle, Grease Drain Pan, Cooking Grate and Warming Rack into their proper locations. WARNING! If at any time the Grill fails to light, or the fire in the Firepot goes out while cooking or smoking when sufficient pellets are still in the Pellet Hopper, turn the Control Dial to Shut Down Cycle and let the Grill completely cool down. Then perform the Initial Firing Procedure. Failure to do so may cause a hazardous over-firing of your grill due to an excess of unburned pellets in the Firepot. 12 Standard Operation may notice an odor, but it will fade and not be present in subsequent grill uses. WARNING! When operating this Grill, maintain a minimum clearance of 36 inches from all sides of grill to any wall or surface, and a minimum clearance of 40 inches from top of grill to overhead surfaces. Only plug this Grill into a receptacle with GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protection. 1. Make sure the Power Switch is in the OFF (O) position. Plug the Power Cord into an appropriate, grounded electrical outlet. 2. Open the Pellet Hopper Lid and locate the Auger. Make sure there are no non-pellet objects or debris in the Auger. 3. Fill the Pellet Hopper with wood pellets. Close Hopper lid. WARNING! Use only wood pellets of .25″ or less diameter and not longer than 1″. Never use heating fuel pellets in the Grill. 4. Turn the Power Switch ON (l). With the Grill Barrel Lid open set the Control Dial to Smoke. In approximately 2 minutes you will notice whitish-gray smoke coming out of the Grill as the Pellets ignite. Note: During the initial charging of the Auger, it will take time for the Pellets to travel from the Pellet Hopper to the Firepot. 5. After assuring the Pellets have ignited, close the Grill Barrel Lid and set the Control Dial to any cooking temperature desired. NOTICE: If you do not see smoke coming out of the Grill after 2 minutes, perform the Pellet Ignition Check procedure to assure that proper ignition has occurred. Note: Higher temperature settings will cook food faster or more satisfactorily to minimum required or higher internal temperatures. See USDA Safe Internal Temperatures table in Temperature Probes section. 6. Allow the Grill to pre-heat for approximately 10 minutes with the Grill Barrel Lid closed before placing food on the cooking grate. REMEMBER: Always start the grill on Smoke setting with the Grill Barrel Lid Open! Once the Pellets are ignited, close Door and set Control Dial to any cooking temperature desired. Temperature Probes The Smoker Grill comes with two probes for cooking foods to precise temperatures. 1. Insert probe plug into Probe receptacle in Control Panel. 2. Feed probe and probe wire through hole in side of Grill Barrel. 3. Insert probe into food. 4. As cooking progresses, food temperature will appear in control panel display. 5. If using both probes, press the Probe Selector button to toggle back and forth in the display between the temperatures registered by each. WARNING! To ensure that it is safe to eat, food must be cooked to the minimum temperatures listed in the table below. Squirt 2 tablespoons of Alcohol Gel fire lighter into the Firepot on top of the pellets. DANGER! Never use gasoline, gasolinetype lantern fuel, kerosene, charcoal lighter fluid or similar liquids to start or freshen up a fire in this Grill. Keep all such liquids well away from the Grill when in use. 9. Carefully light the Alcohol Gel with a fireplace match or a long-reach butane lighter. DANGER! Never squirt Alcohol Gel into a burning fire or a hot Firepot. The Alcohol Gel bottle could explode and cause a fire, serious injury or death. 10. Let the Alcohol Gel and Pellets burn for approximately 4 minutes. 11. After assuring the Pellets have ignited, CAREFULLY install the Heat Baffle, Grease Drain Pan and Grills back in place. WARNING! You will now have a fire in the Firepot. Wear protective gloves and be careful not to burn yourself when you install these components. 12. Turn the Power Switch ON (l) and the Control Dial to any desired temperature setting. Allow the Grill to pre-heat for approximately 10 Control Shut Down Cycle The controls for this Smoker Grill feature an automatic shut down cycle. When finished cooking set the Control Dial to the Shut Down Cycle position, which will leave the Fan running for ten minutes so that most of the remaining pellets in the Firepot will finish burning. Control Safety Features The controls come equipped with 2 heat level safety features. The first of these is a low temperature code display. If the grill stays below 125⁰F for a period of 10 minutes the control display will read LEr and all power will shut off to the internal components of the grill. The display will stay in this state until you turn off the main power switch. The second feature is a high temperature code display. If the grill reaches an internal temperature reading of 550⁰F the control display will read HEr and all power will shut off to the internal components of the grill. The display will stay in this state until you turn off the main power switch. If either of the above conditions occur, unplug the grill and check to see if you can determine the cause before starting it again. See Pellet Ignition Check section in this Use & Care Guide. Operating Tips & Hazards 1. The Smoke setting on the Control Dial is for smoking and adding smoke flavor to foods being cooked. The Smoke setting can also be used to “hold” foods at approximately 160⁰ to 180⁰ F. 2. WARNING! Never move the Pellet Grill while it is hot. If you are transporting your Grill in a vehicle after cooking on it, make sure the fire is completely out and the Grill is cold before placing it in any vehicle. 3. Never put water into the Firepot. It will jam the Auger. 4. The Pellet Grill is designed to operate with the Grill Barrel Lid closed. Cooking with the Grill Barrel Lid open greatly lengthens your cooking time. 5. DANGER! Never add pellets by hand to a 14 by failing to clean your Grease Drain Pan and Drain Tube on a consistent basis. In the unlikely event of a grease fire while cooking, turn the Power Switch OFF (O) and keep the Grill Barrel Lid closed until the fire is completely out. Never keep the Grill Barrel Lid open during a grease fire. If the fire does not go out, briefly open the Grill Barrel Lid, lightly sprinkle baking soda on the fire and reclose the Lid. Be careful not to burn yourself! When the fire is out and the Grill is completely cool, remove the old foil from the Drain Pan, clean the Pan and recover with new foil. Clean any grease accumulation from the Grease Drain Tube. hot Firepot. This is dangerous and you may be seriously burned. If you run out of pellets and lose your fire while cooking, let the Grill completely cool and perform the procedure described in the Initial Firing Procedure. 6. CAUTION! Make sure the Heat Baffle is properly seated on its locating brackets. The long lips of the Heat Baffle should be pointing down over the Firepot. If not seated properly, direct heat and flame could come up out of the Firepot and cause a grease fire in the Grill. 7. When estimating cooking times, the outside temperature is an important factor. If it is hot outside, it will take less time for food to cook. If it is cold, wet or windy, it will take longer. 8. After selecting your cooking temperature (with the exception of Smoke) the Auger will operate continuously until the temperature is reached. Then the controls will cycle the Auger off and on to maintain the temperature. When operating in Smoke mode, the Auger is factory pre-set to cycle on for 15 seconds and off for 65 seconds. 9. CARBON MONOXIDE WARNING! Follow these guidelines to prevent this colorless, odorless gas from poisoning you, your family or others. • Know the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning: headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness and confusion. Carbon monoxide reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. Low blood oxygen levels can result in loss of consciousness and death. • See a doctor if you or others develop cold or flu-like symptoms while cooking or in the vicinity of this Grill. Carbon monoxide poisoning, which can easily be mistaken for a cold or flu, is often detected too late. • Alcohol consumption and drug use increase the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is especially toxic to mother and child during pregnancy, infants, the elderly, smokers and people with blood or circulatory problems, such as anemia or heart disease. 10. GREASE FIRES CAUTION! Grease fires are typically caused Maintenance Creosote and Grease When wood pellets are burned slowly, they produce tar and other organic vapors that combine with expelled moisture to form creosote. The creosote vapors condense in the relatively cool flue exhaust of a slow burning fire. As a result, creosote accumulates on the flue lining. When ignited, creosote makes an extremely hot fire. Airborne grease particles will travel through the cooking chamber. Some of this airborne grease will accumulate on the flue lining along with the creosote, which could contribute to a fire. The smoke stack should be inspected at least twice a year to determine when a creosote or grease buildup has occurred. Also, grease drippings from the food will fall onto the Grease Drain Pan and be channeled out of the Grill through the Grease Drain Tube and collected in the Grease Bucket. Grease will accumulate in all of these locations. The Grease Drain, the Grease Drain Tube and the Grease Bucket should be inspected at least twice a year for signs of grease buildup. When creosote or grease has accumulated, remove it to reduce the risk of fire. Cleaning Grease from your Grill: WARNING! Turn the Switch OFF (O) and disconnect the Power Cord. CAUTION! Accumulated grease is easier to clean off when the Grill is still warm –not hot. Be careful not to burn yourself. Always wear protective gloves. 15 Periodically clean the grease out of the Drain Pan Assembly and Grease Drain Tube. If too much grease is allowed to build up in the Grease Drain Tube, or is allowed to plug the Grease Drain Tube, a grease fire could result. Remove the Cooking Grate, Warming Rack, Grease Drain Pan and Heat Baffle. Wipe up any remaining grease residue inside the Grill Frame with paper towels or disposable rags. Paper towels or disposable rags can also be used to wipe some of the grease off of the interior surfaces of the Grill. Line Grease Bucket and Grease Drain Pan with aluminum foil for easy clean-up. Empty Grease Bucket occasionally, depending on amount of use. Change the aluminum foil on the Grease Drain Pan frequently (sometimes after each use, depending upon what was cooked). Clean foil will make your food taste better and reduce the risk of a grease fire. Cleaning outside surfaces WARNING! Turn the Switch OFF (O) and disconnect the Power Cord. Use a disposable rag or cloth, dampened with warm soapy water to wipe the grease from the outside of the Grill. DO NOT use oven cleaner, abrasive cleansers or abrasive cleaning pads on the outside Grill surfaces. Outside Storage CAUTION! If the Grill is stored outside during the rainy season, care should be taken to ensure that water does not get into the Pellet Hopper. Wood pellets, when wet, expand greatly and will jam your Auger. A Grill Cover to protect the Grill is highly recommended. Cleaning the Cooking Grate and Warming Rack CAUTION! Cleaning the Cooking Grate and Warming Rack works best while they are still warm –not hot. Be careful not to burn yourself. Keep a long-handled cleaning brush near the Grill. After removing your food, give the Porcelain Grill a quick brushing. It takes only a minute and it will be ready the next time you want to use the Grill. Cleaning ash from inside and around Firepot WARNING! Turn the Switch OFF (O) and disconnect the Power Cord. Make sure that the Grill is cold before cleaning the ash. Dispose of ash only per the following instructions. Excess ash in the Firepot may cause your fire to go out, especially in the Smoke setting. The Firepot should be inspected occasionally, and cleaned to remove the ash buildup. Again, clean the ash from in and around the Firepot only when the Grill is cold. Remove the Cooking Grate, Warming Rack, Grease Drain Pan and Heat Baffle to access the Firepot and Grill interior. Much of the ash outside of the Firepot can be swept to the open area at the right of the Firepot using a small whisk broom. It can be removed from the Grill with a small metal fireplace shovel or other similar tool, or by vacuum. See the following vacuuming instructions. Vacuum Ash Removal CAUTION! A vacuum cleaner is the best way to remove ashes from the Firepot, but do it with extreme care to avoid the risk of fire. Again, only clean the ash from the Firepot only when the Grill is cold. A utility-type vacuum cleaner, having a metal collection canister without a bag is best for this task. However, almost any vacuum cleaner can be used if the procedure below is followed. If your vacuum cleaner is a bagless model, empty any previously accumulated debris from the vacuum collection chamber. Then vacuum the ash from the inside of the Firepot. Once the Firepot is clean, empty the collection chamber into the metal container described below without delay. Make sure that there is no remaining ash residue left in the collection chamber. If your vacuum cleaner is a model that uses a disposable bag, install an unused one in the machine. Then vacuum the ash from the inside of the Firepot. Once the Firepot is clean, remove the bag from the vacuum cleaner and place it in the metal container described below without delay. Disposal of Ashes WARNING! Place ashes in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. The closed container of ashes should be placed on a non-combustible floor or on the ground, well away from all combustible materials, pending final disposal. When the ashes are disposed of by burial in soil or otherwise locally dispersed, they should be retained in the closed container until all cinders have thoroughly cooled. 16 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS proper handling and disposal of ash. 5. Sand the outside surfaces of the auger with medium grit sandpaper. Check the inside of the Auger Housings and sand if needed. Vacuum the sanding grit out of the Auger Housings and Firepot when finished. Check that the Auger rotates freely. 6. Re-attach the Auger shaft to the Auger Drive Motor shaft. WHY WON’T MY GRILL POWER ON? Verify power at the electrical outlet. If Power Cord is connected to a GFI (Ground Fault Interrupter), check and reset if necessary. Initiate Grill startup.
