WATER HEATERS EQUIPPED FOR ONE TYPE GAS
ONLY: This water heater is equipped for one type gas
only. Check the model rating plate near the gas control
valve for the correct gas. DO NOT USE THIS WATER
HEATER WITH ANY GAS OTHER THAN THE ONE
SHOWN ON THE MODEL RATING PLATE. Failure to
usethe correct gascan causeproblemswhich _result in
DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, OR PR.OPERTY
DAMAGE. If you have any questions or doubts consult
your gassupplieror local utility.
_,WARNING
INSTALLATIONS IN AREAS WHERE FLAMMABLE LIQ-
UIDS (VAPORS) ARE LIKELY TO BE PRESENT OR
STORED (GARAGES, STORAGE, AND UTILITY AREAS,
ETC): Flammable liquids (such as gasoline, solvents,
propane(LP) or butane, etc.), all of which emit flammable
vapors, may be improperly stored or used in suchareas.
The gaswater heater pilot light or main burner can ignite
suchvapors. The resulting flashback and fire can cause
death or serious burns to anyone in the area, as well as
property damage.
If installation in suchareas is your only option, then the
installation must be accomplishedin a way that the pilot
flame and main burner flame are elevated from the floor
at least 18 inches. While this may reduce the chancesof
flammable vaporsfrom a floor spillbeing ignited, gasoline
andother flammable substancesshouldnever be stored or
used in the same room or area containing a gas water
heater or other open flame or spark producingappliance.
NOTE: Flammable vapors may be drawn by air currents
from other areasof the structure to the appliance.
AWARNING
If this water heater will be used in beauty shops, barber
shops,cleaning establishments, or self-service laundries
with dry cleaning equipment, it is imperative that the
water heater or water heaters be installed so teat com-
bustion and ventilation air be taken from outside these
areas. Refer to the "Locating The New Water Heater"
section of this manual and also the latest edition of the
National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1, also referred to as
NFPA 54 for specificsprovidedconcerningair required.
AWARNING
A fire can start if combustiblematerials suchas clothing, I
cleaningmaterials, or flammable liquidsare placed against
or next to the water heater.
AWARNING
At the time of manufacturethis water heater was provid-
ed with a combination temperature-pressures relief valve
certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory
that maintains periodic inspectionof productionof listed
equipment or materials, as meeting the requirements
for Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devicesfor
Hot Water Supply Systems, and the latest edition of
ANSI Z21.22 and the code requirements of ASME. If
replaced, the valve must meet the requirements of local
codes, but not lessthan acombination temperature and
pressure relief valve certified as meeting the require-
ments for Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff
Devices for Hot Water Supply Systems,ANSI Z21.22 by
a nationally recognized testing laboratory that maintains
periodic inspectionof production of listed equipment or
materials.
The valve must be marked with amaximum set pressure
not to exceed the marked hydrostatic working pressure
of the water heater (150 Ibs,/sq. in.) and a discharge
capacity not less than the water heater input rate as
shown on the model rating plate. (Electric heaters -
watts divided by 1000x 3415 equal BTU../Hr.rate.)
Your local jurisdictional authority, while mandating the
use of a temperature-pressure relief valve complying
with ANSI Z21.22 and ASME, may require a valve model
different from the one furnishedwith the water heater.
Compliance with such local requirements must be satis-
fied by the installer or end user of the water heater with
a locally prescribed temperature-pressure relief valve
installedin the designatedopening in the water heater in
place of the factory furnishedvalve.
For safe operation of the water heater, the relief valve
must not be removectfrom'lt's-designatec_ opening or
plugged.
The tempera_p-_ssut'-e-_l|ef-va'lve'rnust be installed
directly into the fittins-of-th_.watar heater designated
for the relief valve. Positionthe valve downward and pro-
vide tubing so that any disc_wilt exit only within'6
inches above, or at an_(distance below the structural i
floor. Be cert_'thi_'h_'_6-n_-_t'Ts'i_ad_ With any live
electrical part. The discharge opening must not be
blocked or reduced in size under any circumstances.
Excessivelengthi over._30feet,-or use of more than four
elbows can cause restriction and reduce the discharge
capacityof the valve.
No valve or other obstruction is to be placed between
the relief valve and the tank. Do not connect tubing
directly to dischargedrain unlessa 6" air gap is provided.
To prevent bodily injury, hazard to life, or property dam-
age, the relief valve must be allowed to dischargewater
in quantities should circumstances demand. If the dis-
charge pipe is not connectedto a drain or other suitable
means, the water flow may causeproperty damage.
The Discharge Pipe:
Must not be smaller in sizethan the outlet pipe sizeof
the valve, or have any reducing couplings or other
restrictions.
Must not be pluggedor blocked.
Must be of material listed for hot water distribution.
Must be installed so as to allow complete drainage of
both the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the
dischargepipe.
Must terminate at an adequate drain.
• Must not have any valve between the relief valve and
tank.

Safety Precautions
AWARNING
Agas water heater cannot operate properly without the
correct amount of air for combustion. Do not installin a
confined area such a closet, unless you provide air as
shown in the "Locating The Now Water Heater" section.
Never obstruct the flow of ventilation air. If you have any
doubts or questionsat all, call your gascompany. Failure
to providethe proper amount of combustionair can result
in afire or explosion and can cause DEATH, SERIOUS
BODILY INJURY,OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
AWARNING
This water heater must not be installed directly on car-
peting. Carpeting must be protected by a metal or wood
p.an.elbeneath the appliance extending beyond the full
width and depth of the appliance by at least 3 inches
(76.2mm) in any direction, or if the applianceis installed
in an alcove or closet, the entire floor must be coveredb
the panel. Failure to heed this warning may result in
fire hazard.
AWARNING
HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Water heaters are
intended to produce hot water. Water heated to a tem-
perature which will satisfy clothes washing, dish washing,
and other sanitizing needs can scald and permanently
injure you upon contact. Some people are more likely to
be permanently injured by hot water than others. These
include the elderly, children, the infirm, or physicaily/men-
tally handicapped. If anyone usinghot water in your home
fits into one of these groups or if there is a local code or
state law requiring a certain temperature water at the hot
water tap, then you must take specialprecautions. In addi-
tion to usingthe lowestpossibletemperature setting that
satisfiesyour hot water needs, ameans suchas a mixing
valve, shouldbe usedat the hot water taps usedby these
people or at the water heater. Mixing valvesare available
at plumbing supply or hardware stores. Follow manufac-
turers instructions for installation of the valves. Before
changingthe factory setting on the thermostat, read the
"Temperature Regulation" sectioninthis manual.
_,WARNING
Soot build-up indicates aproblem that requires correc-
tion before further use. Turn "off" gas to water heater
and leave "off" until repairs are made, becausefailure to
correct the cause of the sooting can result in a fire or
explosion causing DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY,
OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
AWARNING
The power vent water heater requires its own (separate)
venting system. It cannot be connectedto an existing vent
pipe oPchimney. It must be terminated horizontallyto the
outdoors. Failureto properlyinstallthe ventingsystem can
result !n asphyxiation, a fire or explosion and can cause
DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY,OR PROPERTY DAM-
AGE.
_,WARNING
No vent damper installationis compatible with this power
vented water heater design. No vent damper, whether it is
operated thermally or otherwise is to be installed on this
powervented water heater.Alteration of any part of the fac-
tory-furnished vent assemblycouldresult in improperoper-
ation due to restriction of flue gases, spillageof flue gases
and maycausecarbonmonoxide poisoning.
_,WARNING
• The appliance and its individualshutoffvalve must be dis-
connectedfrom the gassupplypipingsystemduring any
pressure testing of the gas system at test pressuresin
excessof I/2 poundper squareinch(3.SkPa).
• The appliance must be isolatedfrom the gassupplypip
ing system by closingits individualmanual shutoffvalve
during any pressuretesting of the gas supplypipingsys-
tem at test pressuresequal or less than I/2 pound per
squareinch (3.5kPa).
_,WARNING
BEFORE LIGHTING [PROPANE (L.P.) GAS WATER
HEATERS]: Propane (LR) gas is heavier than air. Should
there be a leak in the system, the gaswill settle near the
ground. Basements, crawl spaces, skirted areas under
mobile homes (even when ventilated), closetsand areas
below groundlevel will serve as pocketsfor the accumula-
tion of this gas. Before attempting to light or relight the
water heater's pilot or turning on a nearby electrical light
switch, be absolutely sure there is no accumulated gas in
the area. Searchfor odor of gasby snitfingat ground level
in the vicinity of the appliance. If odor is detected, follow
steps indicated at "For Your Safety" on the cover pageof
this manual then leavethe premises.
_,WARNING
Chemical vapor corrosion of the flue and vent system
may occur if air for combustioncontainscertain chemical
vapors.Spraycan propellants,cleaningsolvents,refrigera-
tor and air conditioner refrigerants, swimming pool
chemicals, calcium and sodium chloride, waxes, bleach,
and processchemicals are typical compoundswhich are
potentially corrosive.
_,WARNING
Obstructed or deteriorated vent systemsmay present a
ser oushealth risk or asphyxiation.

such as gas meters, gas valves or other gas regulating
equipment. I
ACAUTION
WATER HEATERS EVENTUALLY LEAK: Installation of
the water heater must be accomplished in sucha manner
that if the tank or any connectionsshouldleak, the flow of
water will not causedamage to the structure. When such
locations cannot be avoided, a suitabledrain pan should
be installed under the water heater. Drain pansare avail-
able at your local Sears store. Such a drain pan must be
not greater than I I/2 inches deep, have a minimum
length and width of at least 2 inches greater than the
water heater dimensionsand mus_ be piped to an ade-
quate drain. The pan must not restrict combustion air
flow. Under no circumstances is the manufacturer or
Sears to be held liable for any water damage in connec-
tion with this water heater.
A, WARNING
HYDROGEN GAS: Hydrogengascan be producedina hot
water system that has not been usedfor a long period of
time (generally two weeks or more). Hydrogen gas is
extremely flammable and explosive. To prevent the possi-
bility of injury under these conditions,we recommend the
hot water faucet be opened for several minutes at the
kitchen sink before any electrical appliances which are
connected to the hot water system are used (such as a
dishwasher or washing machine). If hydrogen gas is pre-
sent, there will probably be an unusualsoundsimilarto air
escaping through the pipe as the hot water faucet is
opened. There must be no smoking or open flame near
the faucet at the time it is open.
_,WARNING
INSULATING JACKETS: When installing an external
water heater insulationjacket on a gaswater heater:
DO NOT coverthe temperature-pressura relief valve.
DO NOT put insulation over any part of the top of the
gaswater heater.

I used, also shut "off" the gas at each appliance. Leave all I
I gasappliances shut"off" unt the water heater installation
I is c°mplete" I
OTurn "OFF" the water to water
the
heater. Some installations require that
the water be turned off to the entire
house,
QCh,,eck again to make sure the gas supply
is OFF to the water heater. Then dis-
connect the gas supply connection from
the gas control valve.
Disconnect the vent pipe from the draft hood where
they connect to the water heater. In most installations
the vent pipe can be lifted off after any screw or other
attached devices are removed. Dispose of the draft
hood. The new water heater has the draft hood which
must be used for proper operation.
®
Attach hose the heater drain
ato water
valve and put the other end in afloor
drain or outdoors. Open the water heater
drain valve. Open anearby hot water
faucet which will relieve pressure in the
water heater and speed draining.
® ®
a, If you have copper piping to the water
heater, the two copper water pipes can
be cut with ahacksaw approximately
four inches away from where they con-
nect to the water heater. This will avoid
cutting off the pipes too short.
Additional cuts can be made later if nec-
essary. Disconnect the temperature-pres-
sure relief valve drain line. When the
water heater is drained, disconnect the
hose from the drain valve. Close the
drain valve. The water heater is now
completely disconnected and ready to be
removed.
b. If have galvanized pipe to the water
you
heater, loosen the two galvanized pipes
with a pipe wrench at the union in each
line. Also disconnect the piping remain-
ing to the water heater. These pieces
should be saved since they may be need-
ed when reconnecting the new water
heater. Disconnect the temperature-pres-
sure relief valve drain line. When the
water heater is drained, disconnect the
hose from the drain valve. Close the
drain valve. The water heater is now
completely disconnected and ready to be
removed.
AWARNING I
The water passingout of the drainvalve may be extremely
hot. To avoid being scalded, make sureall connectionsare
tight and that the water flow is directed away from any
person.
ACAUTION [
Mineral buildup or sediment may have accumulated in the I
old water heater. This causes the water heater to be much I
heavier than normal and this residue, if spilled out, could
cause staining.
Installation Instructions
Locating the New Water
Heater
You should c_Lrefullychoose an indoor location for the new water
heater, because the placement is a very important consideration
for the safety of the occupants in the building and for the most
economical use of the appliance. This water heater is not for
use in mobile homes or outdoor installation•
Whether replacing an old water heater or putting the water
hearer in a new location, the following critical points must be
observed.
1. The location sdected should be indoors as close as practical
to the vent termination point, and as centralized with the
water piping system as possible. The water heater, as all water
heaters, wil[eventually leak. Do not install without adequate
drainage provisions where water flow will cause damage.
2. The vent piping cannot exceed a total of 35 feet :including
verticaland horizontal runs and have no more than 3 elbows.
It cannot slope downward and horizontal runs require _;" per
foot rise. All horizontal runs require adequate support at 3½
feet intervals.
3. The water heater requires its own (separate) venting system.
It cannot be connected to an existing ventpipe or chimney.
It must terminate horizontally to the outdoors. Whenever
possible terminate the vent on the leaward side of the build-
ing. NOTE: Condensation may be created, at times, as the
combustion gases exit the vent cap and discoloration of
surfaces in proximity to the vent cap may occur.

Combustion Air and Ventilation
for Appliances Located in
Unconfined Spaces
Unconfined Space is a spacewhose volumeis not less than 50 cubic
feet per 1,000_Btuper hour of the aggregateinput rating of all appli-
ancesinstalledin that space. Rooms communicating directlywith the
spacein whichthe appliancesare installed, through openingsnot filr-
nished with doors, are considereda part of the unconfined s[)ace.
In unconfined spaces in buildings, infiltration may be auequare to
provide air for combustion, ventilation and dilution of flue gases.
However, in buildings of tight construction (for example, weather
stripping, heavilyinsulated, caulked, vapor barrier, etc.), additional air
may need to be provided using the methodsdescribedin Combustion
Air and Ventilation fo_"Appliances Locatedin Confined Spaces.
Combustion Air and Ventilation
for Appliances Located in
Confined Spaces
Confined Space isa spacewhose volume is lessthan 50 cubic feet per
1,000 Btu per hour of the aggregate input rating of all appliances
installed in that space.
a. ALLAIR FROM INSIDE BUILDINGS:
(SeePage8 Figure 1, and Figure 5 below)
The confined space shall be provided with two permanent open-
ings communicating directlywith an additional room(s) of suffi-
cient volume so that the combined volume of all spaces meets the
criteria for an unconfined space. The total input of all gasutiliza-
tion equipment installed in the combined spaceshall be considered
in making this determination.Eachopeningshall havea minimum
free area of one square inch per 1,000 BTU per hour of the total
input ratingof allgas utilization equipment in the confined space,
but nor less than 100 square inches. One openingshall commence
within 12 inches of the top and one commencing within 12 inches
of the bottom of the enclosure.
[Figure 5 ]
b. ALL AIR FROM OUTDOORS: (see Figures 6-8)
The confined space shall be provided with two permanent open-
ings, one commencing within 12 inches of the top and one com-
mencing within 12 inches from the bottom oi" the enclosure.
The openings shall communicate directly, or by ducts, with the
outdoors or spaces (crawl or attic) that freely communicate with
the outdoors.
EFigure 6]
1. When direcdy communicating with the outdoors, each opening
shall have a minimum freearea of I square inch per 4,000 BTU
per hour of total input ratingof all equipment in the enclosure.
(SeeFigure6.)
2. When communicating with the outdoors through vertical ducts,
each opening shall have a minimum free area of 1 square inch
per 4,000 BTU per hour of total input rating of all equipment in
the enclosure. (SeeFigure 7.)

4. When ducts are used, they shall be of the same cross-sectional area
as the free areaof the openings to which they connect. The mini-
mum short side dimension of rectangular air ducts shall not be
less than 3 inches. (See Figure 8.)
5. Louvers and Grilles: In calculating flee area, consideration shall be
given to the blocking effect of louvers, grilles or screens protect-
ing openings. Screens used shall not be smaller than ¼ inch mesh.
If the free area through adesign of louver or grille is known, it
should be used in calculating the size opening required to provide
the free area specified. If the design and flee area is not known, it
may be assumed that wood louvers will be 20-25 percent free area
and metal louvers and grilles will have 60-75 percent free area.
Louvers and grilles shall be fixed in the open position or inter-
locked with rile equipment so that they are opened automatically
during equipment operation.

dryers or fireplaces may create conditions requiring special atten-
tion to avoid unsatisfactory operation of installed gas utilization
equipment.

CUTTING OPENING THROUGH AN OUTSIDE
WALL AND COLLAR INSTALLATION
After reading the manual and you have determined the location
of the opening in the wall, (using the drawing below), cut a3½"
hole through an exterior wall.
NOTE: When determining location of the opening in the
outside wall allow for the ¼" rise per foot that has taken
place in the horizontal run.

1. The manufacturer has supplied a3" PVC Schedule 40 street
elbow for connection to the water heater when turning imme-
diately horizontally off the blower. Place the elbow in the
required direction on the blower and using 3 sheet metal
screws, attach the elbow.

The 3" PVC, ABS or CPVC Schedule 40 vent pipe can be run
from the water heater through the wall or from the wall to the
water heater, whichever is most convenient. The vent pipe must
extend aminimum of 1½" through the exterior wall. Extending
the vent cap as far as possible from the surface of the exterior
wall will help minimize discoloration of the wall in this area
which may be caused by the flue gases. Note that the inside col-
lar must be slipped over the vent piping before locating the pipe
through the wall. Before securing the inside and outside collars
to the wall, use asilicone sealer between pipe and opening to
insure awater and air tight seal.

2. If there is to be a vertical run of vent from the blower, the 3"
PVC or ABS pipe must be attached to the blower using 3 sheet
metal screws. Additionally, you must seal all joints using a suit-
able silicone sealer such as GE RTV-103 or equivalent.

Operating Instructions
This water heater is equipped with an electrically operated vent-
ing system and a standing pilot. For the burner to come on, the
water heater thermostat must call for heat. Then the system will
begin sequencing, each section proving itself before gas is
allowed to flow to the burner. BLOWER MOTOR
BEFORE THE WATER HEATER WILL OPERATE:
1. The control system must be connected to a1101120 volt
power supply. The control system has an overall rating of 2
amps. The water heater must be securely and adequately
grounded in accordance with local codes and with the latest
edition of the National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70.
2. The ON/OFF toggle switch, located on the control box
above the thermostat must be in the "ON" position for the
electrical control system to operate allowing the gas portion
to operate(ignite burner).
3. The pilot must be lit. See Lighting instructions on page 23
of this manual or located adjacent to the thermostat on the
water heater.
4. The gas control knob located on the thermostat must be
turned to the "ON" position for the gas to be able to flow.
5. The venting manual reset switch must be in the closed posi-
tion. See 'Vent'ng Manual Reset Switch' "n the "For Your
Information Section".
6. There is anon-resettable hi-limit switch in the thermostat,
which m_t be good (dosed) for the thermostat to be oper-
ated. See High Temperature Shut Off System in the For
Your Information Section".
OPERATION
When the thermostat calls for heat, gas is allowed to flow to a
(Normally open) pressure switch dosing it. An electrical circuit
is then made to the blower, turning it on. The indicator light
located on the control box will come on. When the blower has
achieved sufficient venting, the air pressure switch will close and
the indicator light will go off. A 120 volt circuit will be com-
pleted through the venting manual reset switch and on to the
120 volt gas valve located just below the thermostat. The 120
vokgas valve will open allowing gas to flow to the burner. The
standing pilot will establish amain burner flame.

Temperature Regulation
Due to the nature of the typical gas water heater, the water tem-
_oerature in certain situations may vary up to 30°F higher or
wet at the point of use such as, bathtubs, showers, sink, etc.
Turn the water temperature dial dockwise_./f_) to decrease
the temperature, or counterdockwise (4"- _'_) to increase the
temperature.
This means that when the temperature adjustment dial is set at
the mark approximating 120 ° F,the actual water temperature at
any hot watertap could be as high as 150°F or as low as 90°E
Any water heater's intended purpose is to heat water. Hot water
is needed for denning (bodies, dishes, clothing). Hot water will
present a scald hazard. Depending on the time element, and the
people involved (normaladults, children, toddlers, elderly,
infirm, etc.) scalding may occur at different temperatures.
&WARNING

Troubleshooting Guide
Start Up Conditions
THERMAL EXPANSION
Water supply systems may, because of such events as high line
pressure, frequent cut-offs, the effects of water hammer among
others, have installed devices such as pressure reducing valves,
check valves, back flow preventers, etc._to control these types of
problems. When these devices are not equipped with an internal
by-pass, and no other measures are taken, the devices cause the
water system to be closed. As water is heated, it expands (ther-
mal expansion) and closed systems do not allow for the expan-
sion of hexted water.
The water within the water heater tank expands as it isheated and
increases the pressure of the water system. If the relieving point of
the water heater's temperature-pressure relief valve is reached, the
valve will relieve the excess pressure. The temperatui'e-pressure
relief valve is not intended for the constant relief "ofthermal
expansion. This is an unacceptable condition and must be cor-
rected.
It is recommended that any devices installed which could create a
dosed system have a by-pass and/or the system have an expan-
sion tank to relieve the pressure built by thermal expansion.
Thermal expansion tanks are available from Sears stores and
through the Sears Service Centers. Contact the local plumbing
inspector, water supplier and/or the Sears Service Center for
assistance in controlling these situations.

STRANGE SOUNDS
Possible noises due to expansion and contraction of some metal
parts during periods of heat-up and cool-down do not represent
harmful or dangerous conditions.
Condensation causes sizzling and popping with the burner area
during heati,n_ and coolin_ periods and should be considered
normal. See Condensation section.

Troubleshooting Guide (cont'd)
CONDENSATION
Whenever the water heater is filled with cold water, acertain
amount of condensation will form while the burner is on. A
water heater may appear to be leakingwhen in fact the water is
condensation. This usually happens when:
When a new water heater is filled with cold water for the
first time.
When gas burns and water vapor isproduced in water
heaters, particularly high efficiency models where flue tem-
peratures arelower.
When you use large amounts of hot water in ashort time
and the refill water is very cold.
Moisture from the products of combustion condense on the
cooler tank surfaces and form drops of water which may fall
onto the burner or other hot surfaces to produce a "sizzling" or
"frying" noise.
Excessivecondensation can cause pilot outage due to water run-
ning down the flue tube onto the main burner and putting out
thepilot.
Because of the suddenness and amount of water, condensation
water may be diagnosed as a "tank leak". After the water in the
tank warms up (about 1-2 hours), the condition should disap-
pear.
Do not assume the water heater is leaking until there has been
enough time for the water in the tank to warm up.
An undersized water heater will cause more condensation. The
water heater must be sizedproperly to meet the family's demands
for hot water including dishwashers, washing machines and
shower heads.
Excessive condensation may be noticed during the winter and
early spring months when incoming water temperatures are at
their lowest.
Good venting is essential for agas fired water heater to operate
properly as well as to carry away products of combustion and
water vapor.
SMOKE/ODOR
It is not uncommon to experience a small amount of smoke and
odor during the initial start-up. This is due to burning off of oil
from metal parts, and will disappearin a short while.
Operational Conditions
SMELLY WATER
In each glasslined water heater there is installed at least one
anode rod (see parts section) for corrosion protection of the
tank. Certain water conditions will cause areaction between this
rod and the water. The most common complaint associatedwith
the anode rod is one of a rotten egg smell . This odor is derived
from hydrogen sulfide gas dissolved in the water. The smell is
the result of four factors which must all be present for the odor
to develop:
a. aconcentration of sulfate in the supply water.
b. little or no dissolved oxygen in the water.
c. asulfate reducing bacteria within the water heater. (This
harmless bacteria is non-toxic to humans.)
d. an excess of active hydrogen in the tank. This is caused by
the corrosion protective action of the anode.
Smelly water may be eliminated or reduced in some water heater
models by replacing the anode(s) with one of less active material,
and then chlorinating the water heater tank and all hot water
lines. Contact Sears Service for further information concerning
an Anode Replacement Kit #9001453 and this Chlorination
Treatment.
If the smelly water persists after the anode replacement and chlo-
rination treatment, we can only suggest that continuous chlori-
nation and filtering conditioning equipment be considered to
eliminate the water problem.
Do not remove the anode leaving the tank unprotected. By
doing so, all warranty on the water heater tank is voided.
AWARNING
HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD:.Water heaters are intended to
produce hot water. Water heated to a temperature which will
satisfyclotheswashing, dishwashing,and other sanitizingneeds
canscald and permanently injure you upon contact. Some peo-
ple are more likely to be permanently injured by hot water than
others. These includethe elderly, children, the infirm, or physical-
ly/mentally handicapped. If anyone usinghot water in your home
fits into one of these groupsor ifthere is a localcede or state law
requiring a certain temperature water at the hot water tap, then
fou must take specialprecautions. In additionto usingthe lowest
_ossibletemperature setting that satisfies your hot water needs,
!means such as a mixing valve, shouldbe used at the hot water
taps used by these people or at the water heater. Mixing valves
are availableat plumbing supplyor hardware stores. Follow man-
ufacturers instructions for installation of the valves. Before
changing the factory setting on the thermostat, read the
"Temperature Regulation"sectionin this manual.

HIGH TEMPERATURE SHUT OFF SYSTEM
This water heater is equipped with an automatic gas shut offsys-
tern. The high temperature shut off is built into the gas control
valve. This system shuts off the gas supply to the water heater
burners when high water temperatures are present. It is non-
resettable. If the high temperature shut off activates, the gas,con-
trol valve must be replaced. If this were to occur, turn _OFF the
entire gas supply to the water heater. Contact the Sears Service
Center.
1. The temperature'adjustment dial may be set too high. See the
"Temperature Adjustment"section.
NOTE: A period of tlme is necessary after an adjustment has
been made for the water temperature to reach the new tem-
perature setting.
2. If lower temperature settings will not lower the water tempera-
ture, call the Sears Service Center.
AWARNING
Due to the nature of the typical gas water heater, the
water temperature in certain situations may be hotter
than the thermostat setting.
Short, frequent draws of hot water - especiallywith very
cold incomingwater - can shockthe thermostat into brief
operation resulting in hotter and hotter layersof water
closer to the top of the tank.
Changesin hot water usagepatterns or raising the tem-
perature differential between the cut-on of the thermo-
stat and the coldwater temperature will usuallyeliminate
the problem_
_,WARNING
Shouldoverheatingoccur or the gas supplyfailto shut off,
turn "OFF" the manual gascontrol valveto the appliance.
NOT ENOUGH OR NO HOT WATER
iheck the manual gas shut offvalve to be sure it is open.
Check the pilot flame. It may have gone out. All models have
an opening behind the outer door for viewing the pilot.
If the piIot is not lit, follow the "Lighting" instructions in this
manual or located above the gas control valve on the water
heater to relight the pilot. If the water was extremely hot and is
now cold, the high limit safety temperature shut off may have
put out the burner and pilot. If the high temperature shut off
activates, the gas controlvalve must be replaced. Contact the
Sears Service Center.
. The gas control knob must be turned to the "ON" position.
The temperature adjustment dial may be set too low. See the
Temperature Regulation section.
The gas company can check the gas input to see if it is correct.
i An underfired water heater will not heat water as quickly.
Look for leaking or open hot water faucets. Make sure all are
closed.
The cold water inlet temperature may be colder during the win-
ter months. It will take longer to heat the water and seem like
less hot water.
If you cannot find what is wrong, call the Sears Service Center.
