Front Panel Controls & Connections 1. Guitar In – Plug your guitar in here. It’s not uncommon to use HIGH input for guitars equipped with standard pickups and LOW when using guitars equipped with active electronics. Some like to use HIGH input for guitars equipped with single coil pickups and LOW when using guitars equipped with humbuckers. There’s no hard and fast rule – just plug in to the input that sounds best to you. 2. Power Switch – Connect the included power cable to your rear panel. For optimum tube life always power your amp on with your amp set to STBY. 3. Standby Switch – Allow the amp to warm up for one minute before setting STBY to ON. This extends the life and performance of your vacuum tubes. It is not necessary to set the amp to STBY before setting the Power Switch to its OFF position, but it can be a good habit, if only to ensure you’ve got it set properly next time you power up the amp. 4. Master Volume – Sets the overall volume of the amplifier without having to change your individual channel settings. 5. Channel A & B Controls – DRIVE controls how much “dirt” or “distortion” you get in your sound. BASS, MID, TREBLE and PRESENCE controls will interact differently depending on which VOICING you have selected. REVERB adjusts the channel’s reverb level, allowing you to switch between channels with different amounts of reverb. If you don’t want any reverb, simply turn this knob fully counter-clockwise. VOLUME sets the output level for its channel only. 6. Channel Select Switch – DT50 features two independent channels, A & B. When set to A, use the (5A) controls. For B use the (5B) controls. You can assign unique combinations of Voicing/ Feedback Topology, Amplifier Operating Class and Pentode/ Triode settings for each channel. This provides much more than the traditional clean/dirty channel configuration. Either channel can be set up any way you like…even identically, if that’s what you’re looking for. Customization of each channel is not limited to simply changing some components of the preamp or tone stack - the entire power section can be reconfigured and switched instantly too. It’s like having two extremely versatile tube amps in one box! 7. Voicing Switch – This switch determines the flavor of the currently selected channel’s preamp and tone stack, as well as the Negative Feedback Loop topology (NFL). NFL has a big impact on tonal characteristics and the overall “feel” of the amp. Flip the switch up or down to toggle through settings I through IV. With a single switch your tone can go from clean to mean. Each voicing is distinct: I – Puts the NFL in its tightest setting while configuring the Channel Control’s behavior reminiscent of the great American “Blackface” amps of the 60’s. Recommended settings: Class AB, Pentode II – Sets the NFL topology to be a little looser than I while the Channel Control settings are capable of dialing in echoes of classic British amps. Recommended settings: Class AB, Pentode III – This is the Zero Negative Feedback Loop setting which produces a very “open” or “dynamic” feeling amp. In this setting, the Channel DESIGNED IN U.S.A. TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE OR ELECTRIC SHOCK DO NOT EXPOSE THIS EQUIPMENT TO RAIN OR MOISTURE. TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK DO NOT REMOVE COVER. NO USER SERVICEABLE PARTS INSIDE. REFER SERVICING TO QUALIFIED SERVICE PERSONNEL. THIS EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN TESTED AND FOUND TO COMPLY WITH THE LIMITS FOR A CLASS B DIGITAL DEVICE PURSUANT TO PART 15 OF THE FCC RULES. OPERATION IS SUBJECT TO THE FOLLOWING TWO CONDITIONS: (1) THIS DEVICE MAY NOT CAUSE HARMFUL INTERFERENCE, AND (2) THIS DEVICE MUST ACCEPT ANY INTERFERENCE RECEIVED, INCLUDING INTERFERENCE THAT MAY CAUSE UNDESIRABLE OPERATION. Controls are configured for versatility with a distinct “chime-y” quality. Recommended settings: Class A, Pentode (clean) or Triode (rounder, vintage feel) IV – Setting IV brings the NFL back in and adds a low frequency resonance that pairs quite well with high gain voicing applied to the Channel Controls. Recommended settings: Class AB, Pentode 8. Class A / Class AB Switch – Class A operation is more dynamic with greater touch sensitivity. Use Class AB operation for greater headroom and power. In addition to setting the operating class, this switch also determines the wattage and bias type: When set to Class A the amp is running at 25 Watts and cathode biased. When set to Class AB the amp is running at 50 Watts and fixed biased. Try both settings with each voicing to see what sounds best to you. 9. Pentode / Triode Switch – This switch changes the configuration of the power tubes. Set switch to Pentode to sound clear and commanding. Triode sounds quieter and rounder with a more vintage feel. Rear Panel Controls & Connections 10. Power Cord Receptacle – Plug the included power cable here. 11. Speaker Outs – Connect speakers here using speaker cables only. You should only use one output (A, B, or C) at a time and never power the amplifier up without speakers connected. If you want to silence the speakers, use the Standby switch. The details are as follows: L6 LINK SPEAKER OUTPUTS THRU USE CLASS 2 WIRING ONLY Connect speakers to ONE output only – A, B or C. FOOTSWITCH NEVER OPERATE WITHOUT SPEAKERS CONNECTED. CONNECT TO L6 LINK ONLY (Use STANDBY to silence speakers.) 4 OHM OUT 8 OHM OUT A Use 8 OHM pair OR 4 OHM single 16 OHM OUT B C Use 16 OHM pair OR 8 OHM single Output A is for a 4-ohm speaker load. You can either hook up one 4-ohm speaker/cab or two 8-ohm speakers/cabs Output B is for an 8-ohm speaker load. You can either hook up one 8-ohm speaker/cab or two 16-ohm speakers/cabs. Output C is for a single 16-ohm speaker load. 12. Cabinet Simulated Direct Out – Provides a transformer-tapped direct output with cabinet simulation for studio recording or live performance without mic’ing your amplifier. The ground lift switch can be used to eliminate hum or buzz. 13. Serial Effect Loop – Use the effect loop to send your audio signal to external effects processors and stomp boxes such as modulations, delays & reverbs. Use the LEVEL knob to adjust the incoming signal strength. Note: Signal path is in series. When using the SEND, audio will not pass through to the poweramp without a connection back to the RETURN. 14. Footswitch – Connect a Tip-Sleeve (TS) latching footswitch here for easy access to switch between Channels A and B. 15. MIDI – Integrate your DT50 amp into your existing MIDI rig. 16. L6 LINK – is a powerful, proprietary connection developed by Line 6 to enable easy, reliable, one-cable connectivity between various Line 6 products. In the case of the DT50 Series guitar amplifiers and POD HD (300/400/500) series multi-effects processors, this connection allows both products to sync and communicate uniquely with each other. L6 LINK passes both audio and control data in a single cable, and the resulting operation allows users to plug a single cable from their POD HD family processor into a DT50 series amp and receive many incredible benefits: • No additional cables are required to connect a POD HD (300/400/500) to a DT50 series guitar amplifier. • Changing Tone settings (for example) on either the POD HD or DT50 immediately updates the other, with the result that both units stay perfectly in sync. • “Edit” a preset on a POD HD by simply turning knobs on the DT50 as one would any other guitar amp, then save it on the POD HD to perfectly recall every time the preset is selected. • This one is crazy cool! Calling up a particular amp model or preset on the POD HD enables the DT50 to dynamically reconfigure itself in the analog realm to optimize its components to match the source amplifier. Change your preset on a POD HD, and the DT50 will immediately align itself in the analog realm to such things as the appropriate Class A or AB operation, Biasing method, Feedback topology, Triode/Pentode power tube configuration and more! • Automatic sensing allows amps that are daisy-chained via L6 LINK to operate in a variety of ways, depending on which POD HD is connected. At a minimum, all POD HD multi-effects support stereo operation with linked DT50s, and POD HD500 supports up to four uniquely linked amps with configurations like “wet/dry mode” easily available.
