General Operation

1. Readthis operator'smanual carefully inits entiretybefore

attemptingto assemblethis machine.Read,understand,

andfollowall instructionsonthe machineandin the

manual(s) beforeoperation.Becompletelyfamiliar with

thecontrols andthe properuseof this machinebefore

operatingit. Keepthis manualin a safeplaceforfuture

and regularreferenceand for orderingreplacementparts.

2. Thismachineis a precisionpieceof powerequipment,

nota plaything.Therefore,exerciseextremecautionat all

times.Yourunithas beendesignedto performonejob: to

mowgrass. Do notuseit for any otherpurpose.

3. Neverallow childrenunder 14yearsold to operatethis

machine.Children 14yearsold and overshould readand

understandthe instructionsinthis manualandshould

betrainedand supervisedby a parent.Onlyresponsible

individualswho arefamiliar withthese rulesof safe

operationshould beallowedto usethis machine.

4. Thoroughlyinspectthe areawherethe equipmentis to

be used. Removeall stones,sticks,wire, bones,toys and

to ricochetbacktoward theoperator.

5. Tohelpavoidbladecontact ora thrownobjectinjury,

stay inoperatorzone behindhandlesand keepchildren,

bystanders,helpersand petsat least 75feetfrom mower

whileit is inoperation.Stop machineifanyoneenters

area.

6. Alwayswearsafetyglassesor safetygogglesduringopera-

tion andwhile performingan adjustmentor repairto protect

youreyes.Thrownobjectswhich ricochetcan causeserious

injuryto the eyes.

7. Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesand close-fitting

slacksandshirts. Shirtsand pantsthatcoverthe arms and

legs andsteel-toedshoesare recommended.Neveroperate

this machinein barefeet,sandals,slipperyor lightweight

(e.g.canvas)shoes.

8. Do notputhandsorfeet nearrotatingpartsor undercutting

deck.Contactwithblade can amputatehands andfeet.

9. A missingor damageddischargecovercancause blade

contactor thrownobject injuries.

10.Manyinjuriesoccuras a resultof the mowerbeing pulled

overthefoot duringa fall causedby slippingor tripping.

Do notholdon to the mower ifyou are falling;releasethe

handleimmediately.

11.Neverpullthe mowerback towardyouwhileyou are

walking.If youmust backthe mowerawayfroma wall or

obstructionfirstlook downand behindto avoidtrippingand

thenfollowthese steps:

a. Stepback frommowerto fully extend yourarms.

b. Be sure youare wellbalancedwithsurefooting.

c. Pullthe mowerback slowly,no morethan halfway

towardyou.

d. Repeatthesestepsas needed.

12.Do notoperatethe mowerwhileunderthe influenceof

alcoholordrugs.

13.Do notengage theself-propelledmechanismon units so

equippedwhilestartingengine.

14.The bladecontrolhandleis a safetydevice.Neverattempt

to bypassits operation.Doingso makesthe safetydevice

inoperativeandmayresult in personalinjurythrough

contactwiththe rotatingblade.The bladecontrolhandle

mustoperateeasily in bothdirectionsandautomatically

returnto the disengagedpositionwhenreleased.

15.Neveroperatethe mowerinwet grass. Alwaysbesure of

yourfooting. A slipand fall can causeseriouspersonal

injury.If youfeel youare losing yourfooting,releasethe

bladecontrolhandleimmediatelyand the bladewillstop

rotatingwithinthreeseconds.

16.Mowonly in daylightor good artificiallight. Walk,neverrun.

17.Stopthe bladewhencrossinggraveldrives, walksor roads.

18.If theequipmentshouldstartto vibrateabnormally,stopthe

engineand checkimmediatelyfor the cause.Vibrationis

generallya warningof trouble.

19.Shut theengineoff andwait untilthe bladecomesto a

completestopbefore removingthe grasscatcheror unclog-

ging thechute.

The cuttingbladecontinuesto rotatefor a fewsecondsafter

the engineisshutoff. Neverplaceany part ofthe bodyin

the bladearea untilyouare surethe blade hasstopped

rotating.

20. Neveroperatemowerwithoutpropertrail shield,discharge

cover,grass catcher,bladecontrolhandleor othersafety

protectivedevicesin placeand working.Neveroperate

mowerwithdamagedsafetydevices.Failureto do so,can

resultin personalinjury.

21. Mufflerandenginebecomehotandcan causea burn.Do

nottouch.

22.Only use partsand accessoriesmadefor this machineby

manufacturer.Failureto do so can result inpersonalinjury.

23. If situationsoccurwhich are notcoveredin this manual,

usecareand goodjudgment.Contactyourdealerfor

Slope Operation

Slopesare a majorfactor relatedto slipandfallaccidentswhich

can resultinsevereinjury.Operationonslopesrequiresextra

caution.If youfeeluneasyon a slope,do notmowit.Foryour

safety,usetheslopegaugeincludedas part ofthis manualto

measureslopesbeforeoperatingthis uniton a slopedor hilly

area.If theslopeis greaterthan 15degrees,do not mowit.

Do:

1. Mowacrossthefaceof slopes;neverup anddown.Exercise

extremecautionwhenchangingdirectiononslopes.

2. Watchfor holes,ruts,rocks, hiddenobjects,or bumpswhich

can causeyouto slipor trip. Tallgrass can hideobstacles.

3. Alwaysbe sure of yourfooting.A slip andfall can cause

serious personalinjury.If you feelyou are losingyour

balance,releasethe bladecontrolhandleimmediately,and

the bladewill stoprotatingwithin 3 seconds.

Do Not:

1. Donot mowneardrop-offs, ditchesorembankments,you

could loseyour footingorbalance.

2. Donot mowslopesgreaterthan 15degrees asshownon

the slopegauge.

3. Donot mowon wetgrass. Unstablefootingcouldcause

slipping.

Service

Safe HandlingOf Gasoline:

1. To avoidpersonalinjury orpropertydamage useextreme

care inhandlinggasoline.Gasolineis extremelyflammable

and thevaporsare explosive.Seriouspersonalinjurycan

occur whengasolineisspilled onyourselforyour clothes

which canignite.

2. Wash yourskin andchangeclothesimmediately.

3. Useonly an approvedgasolinecontainer.

4. Neverfill containers insidea vehicleoron a truckor trailer

bedwitha plasticliner.Alwaysplacecontainersonthe

groundawayfromyourvehicle beforefilling.

5. Removegas-poweredequipmentfromthe truck ortrailer

and refuelit onthe ground.If this is notpossible,then refuel

suchequipmentona trailerwitha portablecontainer,rather

than froma gasoline dispensernozzle.

6. Keepthe nozzlein contactwiththe rimof thefueltank or

container openingat all timesuntil fuelingis complete.Do

notuse a nozzlelock-opendevice.

7. Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars, pipesand othersources

of ignition.

8. Neverfuel machineindoorsbecauseflammablevaporswill

accumulatein thearea.

9. Neverremovegascap oradd fuel whileengineis hot or

running. Allowengineto cool at least two minutesbefore

refueling.

10.Neveroverfill fuel tank. Filltankto nomorethan Y2inch

below bottomof filler neckto providefor fuel expansion.

11.Replacegasolinecapandtightensecurely.

12.If gasolineis spilled,wipe itoff theengineand equipment.

Moveunit to anotherarea.Wait 5 minutesbeforestarting

engine.

13.Neverstorethe machineorfuel containernearanopen

flame,sparkor pilot light as on a water heater,space

heater, furnace ,clothesdryeror othergas appliances.

14.Toreducefire hazard,keepmowerfree of grass, leaves,

orother debrisbuild-up.Clean upoil orfuelspillageand

removeanyfuel soakeddebris.

15.Allowa mowerto cool at least5 minutesbeforestoring.

GeneralService:

1. Neverrun an engineindoorsorin a poorlyventilatedarea.

Engineexhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,anodorlessand

deadlygas.

2. Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspecting,makecertainthe

bladeandall movingparts havestopped.Disconnectthe

sparkplugwire andgroundagainstthe engineto prevent

unintendedstarting.

3. Checkthe bladeandenginemountingbolts atfrequent

intervalsfor propertightness.Also,visuallyinspectbladefor

damage(e.g.,bent,cracked,worn)Replacebladewiththe

originalequipmentmanufacture's(O.E.M.)bladeonly,listed

inthis manual."Useof partswhichdo notmeetthe original

equipmentspecificationsmayleadto improperperformance

andcompromisesafety!"

4. Mowerbladesare sharpandcan cut.Wrapthebladeor wear

gloves,anduseextracautionwhenservicingthem.

5. Keepallnuts,bolts,andscrewstightto be surethe equip-

mentis insafeworkingcondition.

6. Nevertamperwithsafetydevices.Checktheir properopera-

tionregularly.

7. Afterstrikinga foreignobject,stopthe engine,discon-

nectthesparkplugwire andgroundagainsttheengine.

Thoroughlyinspectthe mowerfor any damage.Repairthe

damagebeforestartingandoperatingthe mower.

8. Neverattemptto makea wheel or cuttingheightadjustment

whiletheengineis running.

9. Grasscatchercomponents,dischargecover,andtrail

shield aresubjectto wear anddamagewhichcould expose

movingparts or allowobjectsto bethrown.For safety

protection,frequentlycheckcomponentsandreplaceim-

mediatelywithoriginal equipmentmanufacturer's(O.E.M.)

parts only,listed inthis manual."Useof parts which do

10.Do notchangetheenginegovernorsettingor overspeedthe

engine.The governorcontrolsthe maximumsafeoperating

Adjustment

Your mower is shipped

oil in the engine. Fill

up gasoline and oil

as instructed inthe

accompanyingengine

manual BEFORE

operating your mower.

Step 1

1. For shipping purposes, the chute deflector on

your mower is held in an uprightposition by a

retainer.Removethe retainer asfollows:

a. Push chute deflector up towards engine.

Holding deflector inthis position, remove

the retainerand discard. See Step 1

b. Lower the chute deflector carefully keeping

your fingers out of the way.

2. Performthe following sequencefor

handle setup

a. Lift the upperhandle up from folded

positionA and pull it to extended position

B following the arrow in Step2. The handle

shouldclick into this position.

b. Make sure the carriage bolt is seated

properly in the handle.Tighten wing nuts

securing upper handleto the lower handle

3. If satisfiedwith height of handle,tighten wing

nuts at the ends of the lower handleshown in

Step 3. For convenienceof operating, you may

adjustthe handle height as follows:

a. Remove the wing nuts shown in Step3 and

remove the lower handle.

b. Positioneach handle bracketstud intothe

top hole inthe lower handle.

c. Tighten the wing nuts.

Know Your Lawn Mower

Mower

Now that you have set up your lawn mower for op-

eration, get aquainted with its controls and features.

These are described below and illustrated this

page. This knowledge will

allow you to use your new equipment to its fullest

potential.

Blade Control Handle

The blade control handle is attached to the upper

handle of the mower. Depress the blade control

handle to operate the unit. Release it to stop engine

and blade.

_ WARNING:This blade control

mechanism is a safety device.

Never attempt to bypass its

operations.

Cutting Height Adjustment Levers

One adjustment lever is located on each wheel and

is used to adjust the cutting height. All four levers

have to be at the same relative position to ensure

uniform cut.

Recoil Starter

The recoil starter is attached to the right upper

handle. Stand behind the unit and pull the recoil

starter rope to start the unit.

Mulching Baffle (if so equipped)

The mulching baffle is used to recirculate grass

clippings back to the lawn. Attach it as instructed on

page 7 of this manual.

Gas and Oil Fill-Up

1. Check oil level and add oil if necessary. Follow engine

manual for this. See Figure 1 above for location of oil

fill.

2. Servicethe enginewithgasolineas instructedinthe

enginemanual. See

Figure1abovefor locationof gascap.

,_ WARNING: Use extreme care

when handling gasoline. Gasoline

is extremely flammable and the

vapors are explosive. Never fuel

the machine indoorsor while the

engine is hot or running. Extin-

guish cigarettes, cigars, pipes and

other sources of ignition.

WARNING: The operationof

foreign objects being thrown

intothe eyes, which can damage

your eyes severely. Always wear

safety glasseswhile operating

the mower, or while performing

any adjustments or repairs on it.

Engine

WARNING: Be sure no one other

than the operator is standing

near the lawn mower while

starting engine or operating

mower. Never run engine indoors

or in enclosed, poorly ventilated

areas. Engine exhaust contains

carbon monoxide, an odorless

and deadly gas. Keep hands,

feet, hair and loose clothing away

from any moving parts on engine

and lawn mower.

1. Pushprimerthreetimes.Waitabouttwoseconds

betweeneachpush.See Figure2. Intemperature

around550F or below,primefivetimes.Do notprime

to restarta warmengine.

2. Standingbehindthe mower,squeezethe blade

controlhandleagainst upperhandle.SeeFigure2.

3. Holdingthesetwo handlestogetherfirmly,grasp

recoilstarterhandleand pullropeout witha rapid,

continuous,full armstroke.SeeFigure2. Keeping

a firmgripon the starterhandle,let the roperewind

slowly.Repeatuntilenginecranks.Letthe rope

rewindeachtimeslowly.

Stopping Engine

1. Releasebladecontrolhandleto stoptheengineand

the blade.

2. Disconnectsparkplugwirefromsparkplugand

groundagainstthe engine.

Using Your Lawn Mower

Be sure the lawn is clear of stones, sticks, wire, or

other objects which could damage the lawn mower

or the engine. Such objects could be accidently

thrown by the mower in any direction and cause seri-

ous personal injury to the operator and others.

WARNING: if you strike a foreign

object, stop the engine. Remove

wire from the spark plug, thor-

oughly inspectthe mower for any

damage, and repair the damage

before restarting and operating

the mower. Extensive vibration

of the mower during operation is

an indication of damage. The unit

should be promptly inspected

and repaired.

Operating Tips

1. Forbestresults,do not cutwetgrass.

2. Newgrass,thickgrass,orwet grassmayrequirea

narrowercut.

3. Fora healthierlawn,nevercutoff morethan one-third

of the totallengthof the grass.

4. Yourlawnshouldbecut inthe fall as longas there

isgrowth.

5. Foreffectivemulching,donot cutwetgrass.

6. Adjustgroundspeedaccordingto conditionof lawn.

7. Ifthe grasshasbeenallowedto growin excessof 4

inches,mulchingis not recommended.Mowusing

the sidedischargeto reducethegrassheightto 3-1/4

inchesor lessbeforemulching.

Lubrication

1. Lubricatepivotpointson the bladecontrolhandleat

leastoncea seasonwithlightoil. The bladecontrol

mustoperatefreelyinbothdirections.SeeFigure3.

2. Lubricatethe wheelsat leastoncea seasonwith

lightoil (ormotoroil). If wheelsareremovedfor any

reason,lubricatesurfaceof the axle boltandinner

surfaceof thewheelwithlight oil. SeeFigure3.

3. Lubricatethe torsionspringandpivotpointon the

chutedeflectorperiodicallywith lightoilto prevent

rust.See Figure3.

4. Followthe accompanyingenginemanualfor lubrica-

tion scheduleandinstructionfor enginelubrication.

Cleaning Mower

Clean underside of the mower deck after each

use to prevent build-up of grass clippings or other

debris. Follow steps below for this job.

1. Disconnectsparkplugwire.Draingasolinefromlawn

mower,or placea pieceof plasticunderthegas cap

2. Tip the mowerso that it restsonthe housing.Keep

the sidewiththe aircleanerfacingup. Holdthe

mowerfirmly.

3. Scrapeandcleanthe undersideof the deckwitha

sureto removeit now.

7. Balancethe bladeon a roundshaft screwdriverto

check.Removemetalfromthe heavysideuntil it

balancesevenly.

Funcionamiento

Manejo seguro de la gasolina:

4. Inspeccioneminuciosamenteel Areaen donde utilizarael equipo.

Saquetodas las piedras, palos,cables, huesos,juguetesy otros

objetosextrafios con los que podria tropezaro que podrianser

arrojadosporla cuchilla. Losobjetos arrojadosporla maquina

puedenproducir lesionesgraves.Planifiqueel patr6nen el que va

air descargandoel recorte para evitarque la descarga de material

se realicehacia los caminos, lasveredas, los observadores,etc.

Eviteademas descargar materialcontra las paredesy obstruc-

cionesque podrian provocarqueel material descargado rebote

contrael operador.

5. Paraayudar a evitar el contactocon la cuchillao una lesi6npor

un objetoarrojado, mant@ngaseen la zona deloperador detras de

lasmanijasy mantenga a los ni_os, observadores,ayudantesy

mascotasapartadosal menos 25 metrosde la podadora mientras

estaen operaci6n.Detengala maquina sialguien entraen la zona.

6. Para protegerselos ojos utilice siempre anteojoso antiparras de

seguridadmientras operala maquinao mientras la ajustao repara.

Losobjetos arrojadosque rebotanpueden lesionargravementela

vista.

7. Utilicezapatosde trabajoresistentes,de suela fuertey pantalones

y camisasajustados.Se recomiendautilizarcamisas y pantalones

que cubranlos brazos y las piernas, asi como calzadocon puntas

reforzadasen acero.Nunca opere esta maquinacon los pies

desnudos,sandalias,o con zapatos ligeroso con los que se pueda

resbalar(por ejemplo,calzadode Iona).

8. No ponga las manos o los pies cercade las piezas rotatoriaso

en la tolva de la cortadora. Elcontacto con las cuchillas puede

producirla amputaci6nde manos y pies.

9. Una cubierta de descargafaltante o dafiada puede provocarel

contacto con la cuchillao lesionespor objetosarrojados.

10. Muchaslesiones ocurrencomo resultadode pasar la cortadora

sobre los pies durante unaca[da provocadaporderrapes o

tropiezos. No se sostengade la podadorasi se estacayendo,

suelte la manijainmediatamente.

11. Nuncatire hacia ustedla podadora mientrascamina. Sidebe

retrocederla podadora para evitar una pared u obstaculo, mire

primeroabajoy atras paraevitar tropezarsey luego siga estos

pasos:

a. Retrocedade la podadorahastaestirar completamente

sus brazos.

b. AsegQreseque esta bienequilibradoy bienparado.

c. Tire de la podadora lentamentehacia usted,no mas alia de la

mitadde la distancia entre ustedy la podadora.

d. Repitaestos pasoscomo se requiera.

12. Noopere esta maquinaestandobajo los efectosdel alcoholo de

drogas.

13. No embragueel mecanismode autopropulsi6nen unidadescon

este equipo mientras arrancael motor.

14. Elmecanismode control de la cuchilla es un dispositivode

seguridad. Nuncaintente desviarsede su funcionamiento.De

hacerlo no funcionarianlos dispositivosde seguridady podrian

producirselesiones personalesporel contactocon las cuchillas

giratorias. Las manijasde control de lacuchilla debenfuncionar

bienen ambas direccionesy regresarautomaticamentea la

15. Nuncaopere la podadoraen c_sped ht_medo.Siempre est_seguro

de su equilibrio. Sitropieza y cae puedelesionarse gravemente.Si

siente que pierde el equilibrio,suelte inmediatamentela manija de

control de la cuchillay la cuchilladejarade girar en tres segundos.

16. Corte el c_spedsolamentecon luzde dia o con una buenaluz

artificial. Camine,nuncacorra.

17. Detengala cuchillacuandocruce caminosde gravilla,pasoso

andadores.

18. Si la maquinacomenzaraa vibrar de manera anormal,detenga

el motor,y busque inmediatamentela causa. Lavibraci6n por Io

general es una advertenciade algt_nproblema.

19. Apagueel motor y espere hastaque la cuchilla sedetenga

completamenteantes de retirarla guarda para el recorte de c_sped

o desatorarla tolva. La cuchillacontinQagirando por unoscuantos

segundos despuesque el motor se ha apagado. Nuncacoloque

ninguna parte delcuerpo en el Areade la cuchillahastaque est6

seguro que la cuchilla ha detenidosu movimiento rotatorio.

20. Nuncaopere la cortadorasin las guardasapropiadas,cubierta

de descarga,guardapararecorte, manija de control de lacuchilla

y otrosdispositivos de seguridad y protecci6nen su lugary

funcionando.Nuncaopere lacortadora si los dispositivosde

seguridad estan dafiados. Si no Io hace, esto puedetener como

resultadolesiones.

21. Elsilenciadory elmotor se calientan y puedenproducirquemadu-

ras. Nolos toque.

22. Utilicesolamentepartesy accesorios fabricadosespecialmente

Funcionamiento en pendientes:

Laspendientesson unfactor importantequese relacionacon los acci-

graves.La operaci6nen pendientesrequieremayorprecauci6n.Si no

se siente seguroen una pendiente,no la pode.Paraseguridad,use el

Haga Io siguiente:

1. Muevala podadoraa trav_sde las caras de la pendiente,nunca

funcionamiento, familiaricese con sus controles y

caracteristicas. Estos se describen y se ilustran en

esta pagina. Este conocimiento le permitir_, utilizar

Control de la cuchilla

La manija de control de la cuchilla est& unida a la

manija superior. Presione la manija de control de

la cuchilla contra la manija superior para operar la

unidad. Libere la manija de control de la cuchilla

para detener el motor y la cuchilla.

Tolva de abono

La tolva de abono permite usar los recortes del

c_sped como abono, regresandolos a la podadora.

Conecte la tolva para recortes siguiendo las instruc-

clones de la pagina 7 de este manual.

Llenado de gasolina y aceite

1. Verifique el nivel del aceite y agregue mas

de ser necesario. Siga las instrucciones el

manual del motor. Vea la ubicaci6n del tap6n

de Ilenado de aceite en la Figura 1.

.Realice el servicio del motor con gasolina

como se indica en el manual del motor. Vea

la ubicaci6n del tap6n de Ilenado de com-

bustible en la Figura 1.

Palancasdeajuste de la altura de corte

Estas palancas estan ubicadas una en cada

rueda y se usan para corregir la altura de corte.

Las cuatro palancas tienen que estar en la misma

posici6n relativa para asegurar un corte uniforme.

Arrancador de retroceso

El arrancador de retroceso esta unido a la manija

superior derecha. Para encender la unidad

col6quese detras de la misma y tire de la cuerda

del arrancador de retroceso.

Detenci6n del motor

1. Liberela manilade controlde lacuchilla para detenerel

motory la cuchilla.

2. Desconecteel cabledela bujia y p6ngalodemaneraque

hagamasacontrael motor.

Uso de la podadora

AsegOrese que el c6sped est& libre de piedras,

palos, cables u otros objetos que pudiesen daSar

la cortadora o el motor. Dichos objetos pueden

ser arrojados accidentalmente pot la podadora en

cualquier direcci6n y provocar lesiones personales

graves al operador y a otras personas.

ADVERTEHCiA:Si goipea an objeto

extrafio, detenga el motor. Retire

el cable de la bujia, inspeccione
