MAINTENANCE

Neveroperatethis machinewithoutgood visibilityor light.Always
be sureof yourfootingand keepa firm hold on the handles.
Keepbystandersawayfrom the machinewhileit isinoperation.
Stopthe machineif anyoneentersthe area.
Be carefulwhentilling in hard ground.Thetines maycatchin the
groundand propelthe tillerforward.If this occurs,let go of the
handlebarsand do not restrainthe machine.

order.

Allowthe machineto coolat leastfive minutesbeforestoring.
Nevertamperwith safetydevices.Checktheirproperoperation

Fuel Recommendations
and Adding

Useautomotivegasoline(unleadedor lowleadedto minimizecombustion chamberdeposits)with a minimumof 87 octane.Gasolinewith
up to 10%ethanolor 15%MTBE(MethylTertiaryButyl Ether)can be
used. Neverusean oil/gasolinemixtureor dirty gasoline.Avoidgetting
dirt, dust,or waterinthe fuel tank.DO NOTuse E85 gasoline.

Theengine is shippedwithoutoil in theengine.Youmustfill the
enginewith oil beforeoperating.Runningthe enginewith insufficient
_o can causeserous eng ne damageand vo d the productwarranty.

Refuelin a well-ventilatedarea with the enginestopped.Do not
smokeor allowflamesor sparksin the areawherethe engineis
refueledor wheregasolineisstored.
Donot overfillthe fueltank.After refueling,makesurethe tank
cap is closed properlyand securely.

Usingan approvedred GASOLINEcontainer,add fuelslowly,being

by movingthe leverto the CHOKEposition.Activatingthe choke
controlclosesthe chokeplateon the carburetorand aids in startingthe
engine.

Theoperationof anytiller can resultin foreignobjectsbeingthrown
intothe eyes,which can damageyoureyes severely.Alwayswear

CLEARING THE TINES

Choosing the Correct Tine Speed
With experience,youwill findthetillingdepthandtillingspeedcombinationthat is bestfor yourgarden.Settheenginethrottleleverat a speed
to givetheengineadequatepowerand yet allowit to operateat the slowest possiblespeeduntilyouhaveachievedthemaximumtillingdepth
youdesire.Fasterenginespeedsmaybe desirablewhenmakingfinal
passesthroughthe seedbedor whencultivating.Selectionofthe correct
enginespeed,in relationto thetillingdepth,willensurea sufficientpower
leveltodo thejob withoutcausingtheengineto labor.

Beforeclearingthetines by hand,stop theengine,allowall moving
parts to stop and disconnectthe sparkplug wire. Failureto followthis
warningcouldresult in personalinjury.
Thetines havea self-clearingaction whicheliminatesmostof the
tanglingof debris. However,occasionallydry grass,stringystalksor
toughvines may becometangled.Followtheseproceduresto help
avoidtanglingand to clear thetines, if necessary.

Try to till undercrop residuesor covercrops whilethey are green,
moistand tender.

•

Whiletilling,try swayingthe handlebarsfrom sideto side(about
6" to 12").This "fishtailing"action oftenclears the tinesof debris.

deeplyas possibleon eachpass.
Whencultivating(breakingup the surfacesoilaroundtheplantsto
destroyweeds,SeeFigure16),try to havethetines onlydig 1"to
2"deep.Usingtheshallowtillingdepthhelpspreventinjuryto the
plantswhoserootsoftengrowcloseto the surface.If needed,lift
up on the handlebarsslightlyto preventthetines fromdiggingtoo
deeply.(Cultivatingon a regularbasisnotonlyeliminatesweeds,it
alsoloosensand aeratesthe soilfor bettermoistureabsorptionand

Tilling Lip and Down a Slope

Whentillingvertically,try to makethe first pass uphillas the tiller
digs moredeeplygoing uphillthan it doesdownhill.In soft soilor
weeds,you mayhaveto lift the handlebarsslightlywhilegoinguphill.Whengoing downhill,overlapthe first pass byaboutone-half
thewidth of the tiller.

Eachsucceedinglowerterraceisstartedbywalkingbelowtheterraceyouare preparing.Foraddedstabilityof thetiller,alwayskeep
the uphillwheelinthe soft,newlytilledsoil.Donot tillthe last 12"
or moreof thedownhilloutsideedgeof eachterrace.Thisuntilled
strip helpspreventtheterracesfrom breakingapartand washing
downhill.It alsoprovidesa walkingpathbetweenthe rows.

Servicing

The chaincase is pre-lubricatedand sealedat thefactory and
requiresno maintenance.

Removethe belt keeperassemblylocatedbehindthe engine
pulleyby removingthe two hex boltsand lockwashers.See

Removethe old belt fromaroundthe transmissionpulleyand

Followthe instructionsinreverseorder to re-installthe belt keeper
and idlerpulley.

Enginesstored between30 and 90 days needto be treatedwith a
gasolinestabilizerand enginesstoredover90 days needto be drained
of fuel to preventdeteriorationand gumfrom formingin fuel systemor
on essentialcarburetorparts.If the gasolinein yourenginedeterioratesduringstorage,you mayneed to havethecarburetor,and other
fuel systemcomponents,servicedor replaced.

Removeall fuel from tank by runningengine untilit stopsfrom
lack of fuel.

Removespark plugand pourabouta 1/2ounceof engineoil into
the cylinder.Replacespark plug and crankit slowlyto distribute
oil.

Cleandebrisfrom aroundtheengine and the muffler.Touchup
any damagedpaint,and coat otherareasthat may rustwith a light
film of oil.

Storein a clean,dry and wellventilatedarea awayfromany appliancethat operateswith a flame or pilot light, suchas a furnace,
water heater,or clothesdryer.Alsoavoidany areawith a spark
producingelectricmotor,or wherepowertoolsare operated.
If possible,also avoidstorageareaswith high humidity,because
that promotesrust and corrosion.

failuresof WarrantedPartswhichare not original Sears partsor because
of abuse, neglector impropermaintenanceas setforth inthe Sears
EngineWarrantyPolicy.Sears is not liableto coverfailuresof Warranted
Partscausedby the use of add-on, non-original,or modifiedparts.

replacementpart that is equivalentin performanceand durabilitymay

Look For Relevant Emissions Durability Period and
Air index information On Your Engine Emissions Label
Engines that are certified to meet the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Tier 2 Emission Standards must
display information regarding the Emissions Durability Period and the Air Index. Sears Brands Management
Corporation makes this information available to the consumer on our emission labels.
The Emissions Durability Period describes the number of hours of actual running time for which the engine is
certified to be emissions compliant, assuming proper maintenance in accordance with the Operating & Maintenance Instructions. The following categories are used:
Moderate:

Engine is certified

to be emission compliant

for 125 hours of actual engine running time.

Intermediate:

Engine is certified

to be emission compliant

for 250 hours of actual engine running time.

Extended:

Engine is certified

to be emission compliant

for 500 hours of actual engine running time.

For example, a typical walk-behind lawn mower is used 20 to 25 hours per year. Therefore, the Emissions
Durability Period of an engine with an intermediate rating would equate to 10 to 12 years.
The Air index is a calculated number describing the relative level of emissions for a specific engine family. The
lower the Air Index, the cleaner the engine. This information is displayed in graphical form on the emissions label.
