Achuteclean-outtool is fastenedto the top of the

augerhousingwitha mountingclip. Thetool is designed

to cleara chuteassemblyof ice andsnow,

the cabletie beforeoperatingthe snowthrower,

Preparation

Thoroughlyinspectthe areawherethe equipmentis to be

used. Removeall doormats,newspapers,sleds,boards,

wires,and otherforeignobjects,whichcould betripped over

orthrownbythe auger/impeller.

Alwayswearsafetyglassesor eye shieldsduringoperation

andwhile performinganadjustmentorrepairto protectyour

eyes.Thrownobjectswhich ricochetcan cause serious

injuryto the eyes.

Do notoperatewithoutwearingadequatewinterouter

garments.Do notwearjewelry,longscarves,orother

looseclothingwhichcouldbecomeentangledin moving

parts.Wearfootwearwhich willimprovefootingon slippery

surfaces.

Usea groundedthree-wireextensioncordand receptacle

forall units withelectric startengines.

Adjustcollectorhousingheightto cleargravel orcrushed

rocksurfaces.

Disengageallcontrolleversbeforestartingthe engine.

Neverattemptto makeanyadjustmentswhileengineis

running,exceptwherespecificallyrecommendedinthe

operator'smanual.

Letengine andmachineadjustto outdoortemperature

beforestartingto clearsnow.

belowbottomoffiller neckto providespacefor fuel

expansion.

g. Replacegasolinecap andtightensecurely.

h. If gasolineis spilled,wipe itoff theengineand equip-

ment.Movemachineto anotherarea.Wait fiveminutes

beforestartingtheengine.

i. Neverstorethe machineorfuel containerinsidewhere

there is an openflame,sparkor pilot light (e.g.furnace,

waterheater,spaceheater,clothesdryeretc.).

j. Allowmachineto cool at leastfive minutesbefore

storing.

Operation

1. Donot puthands orfeet nearrotatingparts,inthe

auger/impellerhousingor chuteassembly.Contactwiththe

rotatingpartscanamputatehandsandfeet.

2. The auger/impellercontrolleveris a safetydevice.Never

bypassitsoperation.Doingso makesthe machineunsafe

and maycausepersonalinjury.

3. The controlleversmustoperateeasilyin bothdirections

and automaticallyreturnto the disengagedpositionwhen

released.

4. Neveroperatewitha missingor damagedchuteassembly.

Keepall safetydevicesin placeandworking.

5. Neverrunan engineindoorsor in a poorlyventilatedarea.

Engineexhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,anodorlessand

deadly gas.

6. Donotoperatemachinewhile underthe influenceof alcohol

or drugs.

7. Mufflerandenginebecomehotandcan causea burn.Do

nottouch.

8. Exerciseextremecaution whenoperatingonor crossing

gravel surfaces.Stayalert for hiddenhazardsortraffic.

ing on slopes.

10.Planyoursnow-throwingpatternto avoiddischargetowards

windows,walls,carsetc.Thus,avoidingpossibleproperty

11.Neverdirect dischargeat children,bystanders,and petsor

allow anyonein frontof the machine.

12.Donotoverloadmachinecapacity byattemptingto clear

snow at toofast of a rate.

13.Neveroperatethis machinewithoutgoodvisibility or light.

Alwaysbe sure of yourfootingand keepa firm holdon the

handles.Walk,neverrun.

14.Disengagepowerto the auger/impellerwhentransportingor

notin use.

15.Neveroperatemachineat hightransport speedson slippery

surfaces. Lookdownand behindand usecare when

backingup.

16.Ifthe machineshouldstartto vibrateabnormally,stopthe

engine,disconnectthe sparkplugwire and groundit against

the engine.Inspectthoroughlyfor damage.Repairany

damagebeforestartingandoperating.

17.Disengageallcontrolleversandstopenginebeforeyou

leavethe operatingposition (behindthe handles).Wait

untilthe auger/impellercomesto a completestop before

uncloggingthe chuteassembly,makinganyadjustments,or

inspections.

18.Neverputyourhand in thedischargeor collectoropenings.

Alwaysuse the clean-outtoolprovidedto unclogthe dis-

charge opening.Donot unclogchuteassemblywhileengine

isrunning.Shut offengineand remainbehindhandlesuntil

all movingparts havestoppedbefore unclogging.

19.Useonly attachmentsandaccessoriesapprovedbythe

manufacturer(e.g.wheelweights,tire chains,cabs etc.).

20. If situationsoccurwhich are notcoveredin this manual,use

care and goodjudgment.Contactyourdealeror callthe

customerservice numberfoundon page two.

Maintenance & Storage

1. Nevertamperwithsafetydevices.Checktheir proper

operationregularly.Referto the maintenanceandadjust-

mentsectionsof this manual.

2. Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspectingmachinedisen-

gageall controlleversandstopthe engine.Wait untilthe

auger/impellercometo a completestop. Disconnectthe

sparkplugwire and groundagainstthe engineto prevent

unintendedstarting.

3. Checkbolts and screwsfor propertightnessat frequent

intervalsto keepthe machinein safeworkingcondition.

Also,visuallyinspectmachinefor anydamage.

4. Do notchangethe enginegovernorsettingor over-speed

theengine.The governorcontrolsthemaximumsafe

operatingspeed of theengine.

5. Snowthrowershaveplatesand skidshoesare subjectto

wearanddamage.Foryoursafetyprotection,frequently

checkallcomponentsand replacewith originalequipment

manufacturer's(OEM) partsonly."Useof partswhich do

notmeetthe originalequipmentspecificationsmayleadto

improperperformanceandcompromisesafety!"

6. Checkcontrols periodicallyto verify theyengageand

disengageproperlyandadjust, if necessary.Referto the

adjustmentsection inthis operator'smanualfor instructions.

7. Maintainor replacesafetyandinstructionlabels,as neces-

sary.

8. Observeproperdisposallawsandregulationsfor gas,oil,

etc. to protectthe environment.

9. Priorto storing,run machinea few minutesto clearsnow

frommachineand preventfreezeup of auger/impeller.

10.Neverstorethe machineorfuel containerinsidewhere

thereis an openflame,sparkor pilot lightsuch as a water

heater,furnace,clothesdryeretc.

11.Alwaysreferto theoperator'smanualfor properinstructions

onoff-seasonstorage.

Do not modify engine

Toavoidseriousinjuryordeath,do not modifyengineinany

way.Tamperingwiththegovernorsettingcan leadto a runaway

engineandcauseit to operateat unsafespeeds.Nevertamper

withfactorysettingof enginegovernor.

pressureto the backof each,

5. Removethe flatwasherandhairpinclip fromtheend

of the chutedirectionalcontrol.

Insertthe endof the chutedirectionalcontrolinto the

lowerbracketand securewiththeflatwasherand hair-

pin clipjust removed.If necessary,the lowerbracket

can beadjusted.Referto ChuteBracketAdjustment.

Auger Control

IMPORTANT:Priorto operatingyoursnowthrower,refer

to AugerControlTeston page11.Readandfollowall

instructionscarefullyandperformalladjustmentsto verify

your snowthroweris operatingsafelyand properly.

Skid Shoes

IMPORTANT:Itis not recommendedthatyou operate

this snowthrowerongravelas loosegravelcan beeasily

pickedupandthrownby the augercausingpersonal

injury ordamageto the snowthrower.

The snowthrowerskidshoesareadjustedupwardat the

factoryfor shippingpurposes.Adjustthemdownward,if

desired,priorto operatingthe snowthrower.Referto Skid

Shoeson page13.

NOTE:If youchooseto operatethe snowthroweron

a gravelsurface,keepthe skidshoesin positionfor

maximumclearancebetweenthe groundandthe shave

plate.

Tire Pressure

Beforeoperating,checktire pressureand reducepres-

sure in bothtiresto between15psi and20 psi.

NOTE:If thetire pressureis not equalin bothtires,the

unit maynottravelina straightpathandthe shaveplate

maywearunevenly.

Now that you have set up your snow thrower for

operation, get acquainted with its controls and fea-

tures. These are described below and illustrated in

Figure 1. This knowledge will allow you to use your

new equipment to its fullest potential.

Shift Lever

The shiftleveris locatedin the rightside of the handle

panelandis usedto determinegorundspeedand

directionof travel,

Forward

Therearesixforward(F) speeds,Positionone(1)is the

slowestandpositionsix(6) is the fastest,

Reverse

Therearetworeverse(R) speeds,One(1)is the slower

andtwo(2) is the faster.

Choke Control

Thechokecontrolis foundonthe rearof the engineand

is activatedby rotatingthe knobclockwise,Activatingthe

chokecontrolclosesthe chokeplateon thecarburetor

andaids instartingthe engine,

Throttle Control

Thethrottlecontrolis locatedon the

engine,Itregulatesthe speedof the

engineandwill shutoffthe enginewhen

pusheddowncompletely,

Primer

Depressingthe primerforcesfuel directly

intothe engine'scarburetorto aid in

cold-weatherstarting,

Oil Fill

Engineoil levelcan becheckedandoil

addedthroughthe oil fill,

Auger Control

AUGER

CONTROL

Theaugercontrolis locatedonthe left handle.Squeeze

thecontrolgripagainstthe handleto engagethe augers

andstart snowthrowingaction. Releaseto stop.

Drive Control /Auger Clutch Lock*

Thedrivecontrolis locatedonthe right handle.Squeeze

thecontrolgripagainstthe handleto engagethe wheel

drive.Releaseto stop.

*On selectmodels,thedrive controlalsolocksthe auger

controlso thatyoucan operatethe chutedirectional

controlwithoutinterruptingthe snowthrowingprocess.

If theaugercontrolis engagedsimultaneouslywiththe

drivecontrol,the operatorcan releasethe augercontrol

(onthe left handle)andtheaugerswill remainengaged.

Releasebothcontrolsto stopthe augersandwheel

drive.

IMPORTANT:Alwaysreleasethe drivecontrolbefore

changingspeeds.

Ignition Key

The ignitionkeyis a safetydevise.It mustbefully

insertedinorderfor the engineto start.Removethe

ignitionkeywhenthe snowthroweris notin use.

Do notturn the ignitionkeyin anattemptto start the

engine.Doingso maycauseit to break.

Recoil Starter Handle

Thishandleis usedto manuallystartthe engine.

Electric Starter Button

Pressingthe electricstarterbuttonengagesthe engine's

electricstarterwhen pluggedinto a 120Vpowersource.

Clean-Out Tool

WARNING: Never use your hands

Requirestheuse of a three-prongoutdoorextensioncord

anda 120Vpowersource/walloutlet.

Augers

Whenengaged,the augersrotateanddraw snowinto the

augerhousing.

Chute Assembly

Snowdrawnintothe augerhousingis dischargedoutthe

chuteassembly.

Gas Cap

Unthreadthe gas capto addgasolineto the fueltank.

WARNING

The operation of

any snowthrower

wear safety glasses

while operatingthe

snowthrower,or while

performing any adjust-

ments or repairs on it.

Besure no one other

than the operator is

Gas & Oil Fill-Up

Servicethe enginewithgasolineandoil as instructedin

theTecurnsehEnginesmanualpackedseparatelywith

yoursnowthrower.Readinstructionscarefully,

StartingThe Engine

1, Attachsparkplugwireto sparkplug. Makecertain

the metalloopon theendof the sparkplugwire

(insidethe rubberboot)is fastenedsecurelyoverthe

metaltip on the sparkplug.

,As theenginewarms,slowlyrotatethe chokecontrol

to the OFFposition.If theenginefalters,quickly rotate

Stopping The Engine

Runenginefor a fewminutesbeforestoppingto helpdry

offany moistureonthe engine.

1, Movethrottlecontrolto STOPposition.

2, Removetheignitionkeyandstoreina safeplace,

3, Wipeall snowandmoisturefromthe areaaroundthe

engineas wellas the areainand aroundthe drive

controlandaugercontrol,Also,engageand release

bothcontrolsseveraltimes.

Chute Clean-Out Tool

Thechuteclean-outtool is convenientlyfastenedto the

rearof the augerhousingwitha mountingclip.Should

snowandice becomelodgedin the chuteassembly

duringoperation,proceedas followsto safelycleanthe

chuteassemblyandchuteopening:

1. Releaseboththe AugerControlandthe Drive

Control.

2. Stopthe engineby removingthe ignitionkey.

3. Removethe clean-outtool fromthe clip which

securesit to the rearof the augerhousing.

4. Usethe shovel-shapedendof the clean-outtool to

dislodgeandscoopanysnowandicewhichhas

formedinand nearthe chuteassembly.

5. Refastenthe clean-outtool to the mountingclip on

the rearof theaugerhousing,reinsertthe ignitionkey

andstartthe snowthrower'sengine.

6. Whilestandinginthe operator'sposition(behindthe

snowthrower),engagethe augercontrolfor a few

secondsto clearany remainingsnowandice fromthe

chuteassembly.

To Engage Drive

Withthethrottlecontrolinthe Fast(rabbit)position,

moveshift leverintooneof the sixforward(F)

positionsortwo reverse(R) positions.Selecta speed

appropriatefor the snowconditionsanda paceyou're

comfortablewith.

2. Squeezetheaugercontrolagainstthe handleandthe

augerswill turn.Releaseit andthe augerswill stop.

3. Squeezethedrivecontrolagainstthehandlethe

snowthrowerwill move.Releaseit anddrivemotion

will stop.

To Engage Augers

1. Toengagethe augersandstartthrowingsnow,

squeezethe augercontrolagainstthe lefthandle.

Releaseto stoptheaugers.

Auger Control Test

Performthe followingtest beforeoperatingyoursnow

throwerfor thefirst timeandat the startof eachwinter.

Checkthe adjustmentof the augercontrolas follows:

1. Whenthe augercontrolis releasedandinthe

disengaged"up" )osition,thecable shouldhavevery

littleslack.ItshouldNOTbe tight.

2. Ina well-ventilatedarea,startthe snowthrower

engineas instructedonthe previouspage.Makesure

the throttleis setin the FASTposition.

3. Whilestandingin theoperator'sposition(behindthe

snowthrower),engagethe auger.

4. Allowthe augerto remainengagedfor approximately

ten (10)secondsbeforereleasingthe augercontrol.

Repeatthisseveraltimes.

5. Withthe throttlecontrolin the FAST(rabbit)position

andthe augercontrolinthe disengaged"up"position,

walkto the frontof the machine.

6. Confirmthatthe augerhascompletelystopped

rotatingandshowsNOsignsof motion.Ifthe auger

showsANYsignsof rotating,immediatelyreturnto

the operator'spositionandshutoffthe engine.Wait

for ALLmovingpartsto stopbeforere-adjustingthe

augercontrol.

7. To readjustthe controlcable,loosenthe upperhex

nutonthe augercable bracket.

8. Positionthe bracketupwardto providemoreslack(or

downwardto increasecabletension).See Figure2.

9. Retightenthe upperhex nut.

10.RepeatAuger Control Test to verifyproperadjust-

menthas beenachieved.

petroleumjelly,linseedoil, mineraloil, paraffinwaxor

Auger Shaft

At leastonce a season,removethe shearpinson auger

shaft.Spraylubricantinsideshaft,aroundthe spacers.

Alsolubricatethe flangebearingsfoundat eitherendof

the shaft.SeeFigure9.

Gear Case

Theaugergearcasehas beenfilled withgreaseat the

factory.If disassembledfor any reason,lubricatewith

twoouncesof grease(Part Number737-0168).

NOTE: Donot overfillthe gearcase. Damageto the

sealscould result.Besurethe ventplugis freeof

greasein orderto relievepressure.

Shave Plate and Skid Shoes

Theshaveplateand skidshoesonthe bottomof the

snowthroweraresubjectto wear.Theyshouldbe

checkedperiodicallyandreplacedwhennecessary.

Toremoveskidshoes:

1. Removethefour carriageboltsandhexflangenuts

whichsecurethemto the snowthrower.

2. Reassemblenew skidshoeswiththe fourcarriage

bolts(twooneach side)andhexflange nuts.Refer

to Figure10.

Toremoveshaveplate:

1. Removethecarriageboltsand hexnutswhich

attachit to the snowthrowerhousing.

2. Reassemblenew shaveplate,makingsureheadsof

carriageboltsareto the insideof housing.Tighten

mixratiofoundon stabilizercontainer.Runengineat least

Preparing Snow Thrower

d. Servicecompletedby someoneotherthananauthorizedservice

e. MTDdoesnot extendanywarrantyfor productssoldor exported

outsideof the UnitedStates,its possessionsandterritories,except

thosesoldthroughMTD'sauthorizedchannelsof exportdistribution.

f. ReplacementpartsthatarenotgenuineMTDparts.

g. Transportationchargesandservicecalls.

Noimplied warranty,including any implied warrantyof mer-

chantabilityof fitness for a particularpurpose,appliesafter the

applicableperiodof expresswrittenwarrantyaboveasto the

partsasidentified.Nootherexpresswarranty,whetherwrittenor

oral,exceptas mentionedabove,givenby anypersonor entity,

includinga dealeror retailer,withrespectto any product,shall

bindMTD.Duringthe periodof the warranty,the exclusiveremedy

is repairor replacementof the productas setforth above.
