Operation
Safe HandlingOf Gasoline:
1. Toavoidpersonalinjuryor propertydamageuse
extremecare in handlinggasoline•Gasolineis extremely
flammableandthevapors are explosive.Seriouspersonal
injurycan occur whengasolineis spilled on yourselfor
yourclotheswhichcan ignite.
2. Washyourskin andchangeclothesimmediately.
3. Useonly an approvedgasolinecontainer.
4. Neverfill containersinsidea vehicle or ona truck ortrailer
bedwith a plastic liner•Alwaysplace containersonthe
groundawayfromyour vehiclebeforefilling.
5. Removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruck or
trailerand refuelit onthe ground•Ifthis is notpossible,
then refuelsuchequipmenton a trailerwitha portable
container,ratherthan froma gasolinedispensernozzle.
6. Keepthe nozzlein contactwith the rimof thefuel tankor
containeropeningat alltimes until fueling is complete.Do
notuse a nozzlelock-opendevice•
7. Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars, pipesandothersources
of ignition•
8. Neverfuel machineindoorsbecauseflammablevapors
willaccumulateinthe area.
9. Neverremovegascap oraddfuel whileengineis hot or
running• Allow engineto cool at least two minutesbefore
refueling•
12.Ifgasolineisspilled,wipeitofftheengineandequipment.Move
unitto anotherarea.Wait5 minutesbeforestartingengine.
13.Neverstorethe machineorfuel containernearan open
flame,spark or pilot light as on a water heater,space heater,

slacksandshirts. Shirtsand pantsthat coverthe arms and
legs andsteel-toedshoesare recommended•Neveroperate
this machinein barefeet,sandals, slipperyor lightweight

positionyourselfwhere the directline of sight to cutting
bladeis blockedby guards.
24.Alwaysstopenginewhen edgingor trimmingisdelayedor
whentransportingmachinefrom onelocationto another.
Neverleavea runningmachineunattended.Stopthe
engine,disconnectspark plugwireand ground againstthe
engineto preventunintendedstarting.
25.Only use partsandaccessoriesmadefor this machineby
the manufacturer.Failureto do so, canresult in personal

Service
1. Neverrun an engineindoorsor ina poorlyventilatedarea.
Engineexhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,an odorlessand
deadlygas.
2. Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspecting,makecertainthe
bladeandall movingpartshavestopped.Disconnectthe
sparkplugwire andgroundagainsttheengineto prevent
unintendedstarting.
3. Checkthe bladeandenginemountingboltsatfrequent
intervalsfor propertightness.Also,visuallyinspectblade
fordamage(e.g.,bent,cracked,worn) Replacebladewith
theoriginalequipmentmanufacture's(O£.M.) bladeonly,
listedin thismanual.'Use of partswhich do notmeetthe
originalequipmentspecificationsmayleadto improper
performanceandcompromisesafety!"
4. Lawnedgerbladesaresharp andcancut. Wrapthe blade
orweargloves,and useextracautionwhenservicingthem.
5. Keepallnuts,bolts,andscrewstight to besurethe equip-
mentis in safeworkingcondition.
6. Nevertamperwithsafetydevices.Checktheirproper
operationregularly'.
7. Afterstrikinga foreignobject,stopthe engine,discon-
nectthe spark plugwire andgroundagainsttheengine.
Thoroughlyinspectthe lawnedgerfor anydamage.Repair
thedamagebeforestartingandoperatingthe lawnedger.
8. Neverattempt to makea wheel orcutting height adjust-
mentwhilethe engineis running.
9. Manycomponentsonyour new edgercan wearwith
continueduse. Forsafetyprotection,frequentlycheck
alledgercomponentsand replaceimmediatelywith
originalequipmentmanufacturer's(O.E.M.)partsonly,
listedin this manual."Useof parts whichdo not meetthe

Positioning the Edger HandJes
1. Removeand discardanypackagingcardboardthat
maybepresentbetweenthe upperhandleandthe
lowerhandle.
2. Depressthe bladecontrolat the top of the upper
handleandpivotthe upperhandleupwarduntilit
snapsinto place.
3. Tightenthe handknobs,whichare locatedon boththe
leftand rightsidesof the handle.SeeFigure2.
Attaching the Starter Rope
1. Locatethe ropeguidefoundon the rightsideof the
upperhandle.
2. Loosen,butdo NOTremove,the wingknobwhich
securesthe ropeguideto theupperhandle.See
Figure1.
3. Standbehindthe unitand holdthe bladecontrol
againstthe upperhandleandgentlypullthe starter
ropeoutof theengine.
WARNING: The edger MadeWiLL
rotate when the starter rope is pulled.
NOTE: The starterropewill notpullout of
the engineunlessthe bladecontrol(referto Figure1)
is depressedagainstthe upperhandle.

Starter Rope /Recoil Starter
The pullrope/recoilstarteris usedto startthe engine.
Primer
The primeris usedto pumpgas into thecarburetorand
aidin startingthe engine.Useit to start a coldengine,
butdo not use it to restarta warmengineaftera short
shutdown.
NOTE: Referto the EngineManualpackedwithyour
edgerfora detaileddescriptionof allengine-related
controlsandcomponents.
Blade Control
Locatedon the upperhandle,the bladecontrolmustbe
depressedagainstthe upperhandlein orderto operate
the unit.Releasingthe bladecontrolstopsthe engine
andthe edgerblade. SeeFigure3.
Blade Depth Control Lever
The bladedepthcontrolleveris locatedon the rightside
of the upperhandle.It is usedto controlthedepthof the
cut. Thefurtherforwardthe bladedepthcontrolleveris
moved,the deeperintothesoil the edgerbladewill cut.

Bevel Adjustment Lever (if so equipped)
The beveladiustmentlever,if so equipped,is located
on thefront, leftportionof the edger,behindthe edger
blade,It is usedto vary theangleof theedgerblade
betweenoneof threepositionsfor edging/trenchingor
bevelededging.SeeFigure3.
Curb Height Adjustment Lever

The curbheightadiustmentlever,if so equipped,is
foundon the rearportionof the edger,Whenplacedin
an applicablenotch,it aids in stabilizingthe edgerwhile

Edging
Adding Gasoline And Oil
Servicethe enginewithgasolineandoil as instructed

with engine running or until the engine
has beenallowed to cool for at least
two minutes after running.
Starting The Engine
NOTE: Referto the EngineManualpackedwithyour
edgerfora detaileddescriph'onofall engine=related
controlsandcomponents.
Tostart theedger'sengine,proceedas follows:
1, Movethe bladedepth controlleverbackto the
STARTpositionin the adiacent(top)notch,
2, Depressthe primerbulbthreetimes,pausingtwoto
threesecondsbetweeneachpush,In cold weather
(below50°F/19°C),it maybenecessaryto depress
the primerbulbfouror fivetimes,
IMPORTANT:Usingthe primerto restarta warm
engineaftera shortshutdownis usuallynotnecessary,
Doingso mayresultina floodedengine,
3, Standingbehindthe unit,depressthebladecontrol
andholdit againstthe upperhandlewithyourleft
hand,
WARNING: Thiscontrol mechanism
is a safety device. Neverattempt to
bypass its operation.
4, With yourright hand,graspthe recoilstarterhandb
andslowlypullthe ropeoutwarduntil enginereaches
the startof its compressioncycle (theropewill pull
slightlyharderat thispoint),
5, Afterslowlyallowingthe ropeto recoil,pullthe rope
witha rapid,continuous,full arm stroke,Keepa firm
griponstarter handlethroughoutthe entirestroke,
6, Allowthe starterhandbto slowlyreturnto therope
guide,
NOTE: If the enginefailsto startafterthreepuffs,
depresstheprimeran additionaltwotimesbefore
pullingthestarterropeagain.
Tobeginedging,proceedas follows:
1, Movethe unitover to theareato beedged,making
surethatthe bft rearwheelis on a hardsurfaceand
the bladeis overthe areato becut, SeeFigure4,

2, Movethe bladedepthcontrolleverto the leftandplace
intothe nextlowernotch, Thenmakea passalongthe
areato beedgedbeforeproceedingto the nextnotch,
Thefurtherforwardthe bladedepthcontrolleveris
moved,the deeperor lowerthe bladewill cut intothe
ground, Severalpassesmaybenecessaryto obtain
the desireddepthof cut, Do not lowertheblademore
thanonedepthnotchat a timewithoutmakinga pass,

4, Onceyou havereachedthe endof yourcutting path,
raisethe bladecontrolleverbackinto the START
position,moveto the nextareato becut, andproceed
againfromstep 1,
Stopping The Engine
Tostopthe edger'sengine,releasethe bladecontrol
handle,

Edging Along A Curb
NOTE: Edgerfeaturesvaryby model.All edgermodels

Onmodelsso equipped,the right,rearwheelof the
edgercan be loweredintooneof fivepositionsto ease
the taskof edgingalonga curb,

1, Lowerthe right,rearwheelby movingthe curb height
adjustmentleverslightlyto the left, SeeFigure5,
2, Pivotthe right,rearwheelintoanapplicablepositionin

3, Releasethe curb heightadiustmentleverto lockthe

Bearing Block
Lubricatethe bearingNeckonce a season,oras needed
by simplyapplyingoil at each endof thecoverplate,

Theedgerdrivebelt is subjectto wearandshouldbe
replacedif any signsof cracking,shreddingor rotting
arepresent.To replacethe belt,proceedas follows:
1. Workinginfrontof the edger,loosentheflange
locknut ontop of frame,allowingthe idlerpulley
assemblyto pivotslightlyoutfromthe frame.See
Figure10.
2. With yourotherhand,carefullyreachunderthe
rearof the unitandremovethe beltfrom aroundthe
engineflywheelpulley.
3. Removethespindlesheavesbeltguardby removing
the twoself=tappingscrewswhichsecureit to the
bladeplateassembly.SeeFigure10.
4. Carefullyremovethe belt fromoff of the pulleys,
againmakingsureto notethe orientationof the belt.
Discardthe belt.
IMPORTANT:Makecertainthat the"V" side of the belt
is seatedintothe top pulleyandthe fiatside ofthe beltis
seatedintothe bottompulley.
6. Reinstallthe spindlesheavesbelt guardwiththe self
tappingscrewsremovedearlier.
7. Makecertainthat thedrive beltis on the engine
flywheelpulleyandidlerpulleys,andretightenthe
flangelocknuton the top of theframe.
IMPORTANT:Makecertainthat thedrive beltis seated
correctlyand thatit is ridingsmoothlyon the spindle
sheavesandis not pinchedbetweenthem. Repeatthe
firstthree stepsif the belt is pinched.
WARNING: Neveroperate the edger
without the spindle sheaves belt guard
in place.
Installthereplacementbelt(PartNo.754_04032B)inthe
sameconfigurationthattheoriginalbeltwasroutedas
follows:
Off-Season Storage
Observethefollowingwhenpreparingthe edgerfor
long-termstorage:
1. Cleanandlubricateunitthoroughlyas instructedon
page11of this manual
2. Referto the EngineManualpackedseparately
withthe edgerfor enginemanufacturers'sstorage
instructions.
3. Coatthe edgerbladewithchassisgreaseto prevent
rustingandcorrosion.
4. Storethe edgerin adry,clean area.Donot storenext
to anycorrosivematerials,suchas lawnfertilizer.
5. Coatthe edger,especiallyany springsandbearings
witha lightoil orsiliconespray.
IMPORTANT:Whenstoringanytypeof powerequipment
inan poorlyventilatedor metalstorageshed,careshould
betakento rustproofthe equipment.
