TIPS, CONTROLS AND GENERALINFORMATIONTIPSRoad safetyLearn how to use the various systemfunctions before setting off.Read the instructions for the systemcarefully before setting off.1) 2)Reception conditionsReception conditions change constantlywhile driving. Reception may beinterfered with by the presence ofmountains, buildings or bridges, especially when you are far away fromthe broadcaster.IMPORTANT The volume may beadjusted when receiving trafficinformation and news.Care and maintenanceObserve the following precautions toensure the system is fully operational:1) 2)avoid hitting the display lens withpointed or hard objects that coulddamage its surface.clean with a damp cloth (microfibre ifpossible). If necessary, you can use adelicate mild soap and water solution, then dry with a soft, dry cloth. Do notapply pressure to the display lens whilecleaning;do not use alcohol, benzines and theirderivatives, ammonia, solvents or othersurfactants to clean the display lens;prevent any liquid from entering thesystem: this could damage it beyondrepair.Important notesIn the event of an anomaly, the systemmust only be checked and repaired by anAlfa Romeo Dealership. If the temperature is particularly low, thedisplay may take a while to reachoptimum brightness. In case of overheating (e.g. excessiveoutside temperature, prolongedexposure to sunlight, etc.), the systemmay switch to "protection mode" bylimiting amplification (maximum volume)and even stopping operation until thetemperature of the radio drops toacceptable levels.MULTIMEDIA DEVICES: SUPPORTEDAUDIO FILES AND FORMATSFor USB sources the system can playfiles with the following extensions andformats:.MP3 (Bitrate 32 – 320 kbps,Frequency 8 – 48 kHz);.WAV;.AAC (Frequency 8 – 96 kHz);Supported extensions: .ACC; .M4A;.M4B; .MP4;.WMA (Bitrate 8 – 320 kbps; 8 –48 kHz);.FLAC (8 – 44.1 kHz);For all USB sources, the system can alsoplay the following Playlist formats:.PLS;.WPL;.M3U.For Apple devices and those that supportthe MTP (Media Transfer Protocol), thesystem can play back all file and playlistextensions and formats supported by thedevice itself and presented by thedevice to the system.NOTE It makes no difference whether thesuffixes are written in capital or smallletters.4Connect

VOICE COMMANDSINTRODUCTION3)Most of the navigator, radio, multimediaand phone actions can be impartedusing the voice system instead of theRotary Pad.For example, to make a phone call, youcan say “dial number” followed by thenumber: “dial number 8 0 0 0 4 2 6 5 3”In addition to being practical and fast, this method increases safety because itallows to keep both hands on the wheelduring the interaction and to reducedistractions while driving; the voicesystem will perform the requiredoperations and, if required, will answersor confirm using a synthesised voice. The system can recognise the voicecommands given, irrespective of gender, tone of voice and intonation of theperson uttering them. Please follow the suggestions below tobe sure that the voice commands arealways recognised by the system:speak with normal volume and speed;for optimum operation, it is advisableto close the windows to reduce noiseand avoid sources of externalinterference. Before speaking:always wait for the sound whichindicates beginning of the voice session;reduce noise inside the passengercompartment as much as possible;ask passengers not to talk. The systemcan recognise commands irrespectiveof the person uttering them; if severalpeople talk at the same time thesuperimposition can create confusionand cause different or additionalcommands to be recognised. It is important to remember that somefunctions which can be executed bymeans of voice control may not beavailable until synchronisation betweenthe system and external devices iscompleted (e.g. phonebook of phonespaired via Bluetooth®, archive ofMP3 tracks on USB devices).Synchronisation may take from a fewseconds to a few minutes accordingto the amount of data.OPENING AND CLOSING VOICESESSIONSTo activate the voice system, press thebutton on the steering wheel fig. 66.To ensure better control reception by thesystem, it is recommended to talktowards one of two microphones fig. 67.66 11256S0001EM67 11256S0004EM49Connect
To start a voice session, press thebutton once. At any time during thevoice session (dialogue), you may pressthe button again to restart the sessionand give a new command regardlessof the previous dialogue. For example, if the system is giving a helpvoice message and you recognize thedesired command, it may be usefulto interrupt the help message by pressingthe button and giving the command,so that you don't have to wait until theend of the help message. If you long-press the button (for a fewseconds), the current voice sessionis immediately closed. The voice session will automatically closewhen a command has been recognizedand no further actions are required by theuser. A phone call will also interrupt thevoice session, in order to allow you toanswer and speak normally using thespeakerphone.VOICE SESSION STATUSAfter a voice session has been opened, the system shows its status throughan icon on the display fig. 68.There are 4 possible statuses:green icon: the system is listening -you can say a command;yellow icon: the system isprocessing the command - wait for thevoice response or for the executionof the command;grey icon: the system hasprocessed the command and is giving thevoice response or other response;red icon: a problem has occurredwith understanding the command. Ina few seconds, the icon will turn back togreen and you will be able to repeatthe command or give a new command.A short text next to the icon providesinformation on the processing status oron the system response to the command.MULTIPLE CHOICE LISTIn some cases, the system may findmultiple responses to the requestedaction. When that happens, the displayshows a list of the possible alternatives.Just say the number of the desired itemor, if the command did not provide thedesired response, say "edit" to go back. For example, the command "Call John"could receive as a response a multiplechoice list containing fig. 69:John Doe;John Smith;John Roe;When these lists are open, you can makeyour choice also by using the Rotary Pad.68 11256S0002EM 69 11256S0003EM50Connect
VOICE COMMANDS - PRACTICAL USEVoice commands can be used for most functions of the main applications of the Connect system ("RADIO", "MEDIA", "NAVIGATION","TELEPHONE").Voice commands may be simple instructions, such as “Help”, “Show contacts”, or instructions with a variable part according to thephonebook, connected peripheral devices, available radio stations or navigation addresses. For example, the commands withvariables are: “tune to 95.6”, “Navigate to 221B, Baker Street, London”.The “complex” instructions can also be performed using a simple command that starts the two-step dialogue in which the systemasks to specify the variable. (“step by step” method). For example, using the "call number" command, the system asks to specify the number to call; using the “play album" command (or“genre” / “author” / “artist” / “playlist” / “song”), the system asks to pronounce the desired title of the album (or the genre/author etc.).A help will appear on the screen suggesting the most common commands for the current application and the main command for theother applications if a voice session is opened and either no command is uttered or the command is not understood. To access detailed help, say “Help” and follow the instructions. The system can understand a number of synonyms for each command. For instance, you can say “play track” or “play song”; or you cansay “show contacts” or “view contacts” or “contact list”.The following charts show the main word for each command.51Connect
