For example, you can block Internet access toyour child’s computer during times when you are not able tosupervise his/her computer use.DHCPDynamic Host Configuration Protocol. This protocolautomatically configures the TCP/IP settings of everycomputer on your home network.DNS Server AddressDNS stands for Domain Name System, which allows Internethost computers to have a domain name and one or more IPaddresses (such as 192.168.0.10). A DNS server keeps adatabase of host computers and their respective domainnames and IP addresses, so that when a domain name isrequested, the user is sent to the proper IP address. TheDNS server address used by the computers on your homenetwork is the location of the DNS server your ISP hasassigned.DSL ModemDSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. The DSL modemuses your existing phone lines to transmit data at highspeeds.EthernetA standard for computer networks. Ethernet networks areconnected by special cables and hubs, and move dataaround at up to 10 million bits per second (Mbps).
35Wireless 802.11b AP11B User’s GuideIP AddressIP stands for Internet Protocol. An IP address consists of aseries of four numbers separated by periods, that identifiesan single, unique Internet computer host. Example: 192.34.45.8.ISP Gateway AddressThe ISP Gateway Address is an IP address for the Internetrouter located at the ISP’s office. This address is requiredonly when using a cable or DSL modem. See ISP fordefinition.ISPInternet Service Provider. An ISP is a business thatprovides connectivity to the Internet for individuals andother businesses or organizations.NATNetwork Address Translation. This process allows all ofthe computers on your home network to use one IP address.Using the NAT capability of the HomeConnect homenetwork gateway, you can access the Internet from anycomputer on your home network without having to pur-chase more IP addresses from your ISP.PPPoEPoint-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet. Point-to-PointProtocol is a method of secure data transmission originallycreated for dial-up connections; PPPoE is for Ethernetconnections.SPIStateful Packet Inspection. SPI is the type of corporate-grade Internet security provided by your Home-Connecthome network gateway. Using SPI, the gateway acts as a“firewall,” protecting your network from computer hackers.
36Wireless 802.11b AP11B User’s GuideSubnet MaskA subnet mask, which may be a part of the TCP/IP informa-tion provided by your ISP, is a set of four numbersconfigured like an IP address. It is used to create IP addressnumbers used only within a particular network (as opposedto valid IP address numbers recognized by the Internet, which must assigned by InterNIC).TCP/IPTransmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. This isthe standard protocol for data transmission over theInternet.WEPWEP stands for Wired Equivalent Privacy. It is based on theIEEE 802.11 standard and uses the RC4 encryption algorithm.Enabling WEP allows you to increase security by encryptingdata being transferred over your wireless network
