Do not connect incompatible products.■Network servicesTo use the phone you must have service from a wireless service provider. Many of the features require special network features. These features are not available on all networks; other networks may require that you make specific arrangements with your service provider before you can use the network services. Your service provider can give you instructions and explain what charges will apply. Some networks may have limitations that affect how you can use network services. For instance, some networks may not support all language-dependent characters and services.Your service provider may have requested that certain features be disabled or not activated in your device. If so, these features will
9not appear on your device menu. Your device may also have a special configuration such as changes in menu names, menu order, and icons. Contact your service provider for more information. This device supports WAP 2.0 protocols (HTTP and SSL) that run on TCP/IP protocols. Some features of this device, such as sending e-mail, browsing websites, or downloading files require network support for these technologies.
10General information■Access codesWhen the device or keypad is locked, calls may be possible to the official emergency number programmed into your device. Making an emergency call in the offline profile or when the device is locked requires that the device recognise the number to be an official emergency number. It is advisable to change the profile or unlock the device by entering the lock code before you make the emergency call.To activate the device when it is locked, enter the lock code. 111. Get started■Install and remove batteryNote: Always switch the device off and disconnect the charger before removing the battery.1. To remove the cover, with the back of the device facing you, press the release button, and lift up the back cover.2. 123. Push down on the other end of the battery to snap the battery into place.4. Insert the back cover toward the top of the device, and press it down until you hear a click.5. 13■Insert UIM cardAlways switch the device off and disconnect the charger before inserting or removing the UIM card.1. Remove the cover and battery. See steps 1 and 5 in "Install and remove battery", p. 11.2. Ensure that the gold-coloured area on the UIM card is facing downwards, and insert the UIM card into the card slot.3. Install the battery, and replace the cover. See step 4 in "Install and remove battery", p. 11.
14■Charge the batteryWarning: Use only batteries, chargers, and enhancements approved by Nokia for use with this particular model. The use of any other types may invalidate any approval or warranty, and may be dangerous.For availability of approved enhancements, please check with your dealer. When you disconnect the power cord of any enhancement, grasp and pull the plug, not the cord.1. Connect the charger to a wall socket.2. Connect the charger plug to the USB connector at the left side of the device. If the battery is completely discharged, it may take a few seconds before the charging indicator appears on the display or before any calls can be made.

16Note: As with any radio transmitting device, avoid touching the antenna area unnecessarily while the antenna is transmitting or receiving. Contact with such an antenna affects the communication quality and may cause the device to operate at a higher power level than otherwise needed and may reduce the battery life.

18■Standby mode and shortcutsDepending on your wireless service provider and the model number of your device, some or all of the following selection keys may appear in the standby mode.1. Signal strength — Shows the signal strength of the wireless network at your current location.2. Battery level — Shows the battery charge level.3. Go to — Press the left selection key to access a certain feature quickly.4. Names — Press the right selection key to access the contacts list.5. 19Shortcuts in the standby mode:— To access the list of dialled numbers, press the call key once.— To access the main menu, press the middle selection key.— To switch between current profile and silent profile, press and hold # for at least three seconds.— To activate the radio function, press and hold * for at least three seconds.— For shortcuts of scroll key, see "My shortcuts", p. 40.■KeyguardKeyguard locks the keypad to prevent accidental key presses. When the keypad is locked, calls still may be possible to the official emergency number programmed into your device. Enter the emergency number, and press the call key. The number is displayed only after you have entered its last digit.To lock the keypad automatically when no keys are pressed for a certain time, in the standby mode, select Menu > Settings > Phone > Automatic keyguard > On.
20To lock the keypad, select Menu, and press * within 2 seconds.To unlock the keypad, select Menu, and press * within 2 seconds.If you receive a call when the keypad is locked, it is automatically unlocked, and then locked again when you end the call.
213. Call functions■Make and answer a callTo make a call, enter the phone number, including the country code and area code, if necessary, and press the call key. Press the volume key to adjust the volume of the earpiece or headset during the call.To answer a call, press the call key. To end a call or to reject an incoming call, press the end key.■Conference callingConference calling (network service) allows you to take part in a conference call with another two participants. To call a third party during a call, select Options > New call. Enter the number you want, and press the call key. When the new call is answered, press the call key to connect the calls. To end the conference call, select Options > End all calls, or press the end key.
22■LoudspeakerWarning: Do not hold the device near your ear when the loudspeaker is in use because the volume may be extremely loud.To activate the loudspeaker during a call, select Loudsp. To deactivate the loudspeaker, select Handset. The loudspeaker is deactivated automatically when a call (or a call attempt) ends or when certain enhancements are connected.■Voice dialingYou can make a phone call by saying the name that is saved in the contact list of the device. Before using voice dialling, you must record a voice tag in your device.Before using voice tags, note the following:• Voice tags are not language-dependent. They are dependent on the speaker’s voice.• You must say the name exactly as your said it when you recorded it.
23• Voice tags are sensitive to background noise. Record voice tags and use them in a quiet environment.• Very short names are not accepted. Use long names, and avoid similar names for different numbers.Note: Using voice tags may be difficult in a noisy environment or during an emergency, so you should not rely solely upon voice dialling in all circumstances.To record a voice tag, select Menu > Contacts > Names > Details > Options > Add voice tag. Select Start, and speak after the tone. To stop recording, select Quit.To activate voice dialling, press and hold the volume key down. A short tone sounds, and Speak now is displayed. To deactivate voice dialling, select Quit.To make a call by voice dialling, clearly speak the name of the contact you want to dial. If the device recognises the name you spoke, it shows a list of matches. Using voice commands to operate the device is similar to voice dialling.
244. Write textYou can enter text using traditional or predictive text input. To change the text input method, and to switch between upper and lower case, press #. To display a list of special characters, press *.■Traditional text inputPress a number key, 2-9, repeatedly until the desired character appears. To add a space, press 0. To add a number, press and hold the desired number key. ■Predictive text inputPredictive text input is based on a built-in dictionary when writing in English. Select Options > Prediction on.When using predictive text input, press each key once for each letter. The device suggests a matching word. If the displayed word is the one you want, press 0, and start writing the next word. If not, press * repeatedly to view other word options.
25If ? is displayed after the word, the word is not in the dictionary. To add the word to the dictionary, select Spell, enter the word using traditional text input, and select Save.
265. Menu functionsThe device functions are grouped into menus. Not all menu functions or option items are described here.In the standby mode, select Menu, scroll to the menu item you want to open, and select it. To exit the current menu level, select Exit or Back. To return to the standby mode, press the end key. ■MessagingYou can only use messaging services supported by your network or service provider.Text message settingsSelect Menu > Messaging > Text messages > Message settings.Select Sending options and from the following:Priority — to send text messages with normal priority or as urgent
27Delivery reports— to receive confirmation when your message is deliveredSend callback number — to send a number to which you want to be called backSignature — to attach a signature to outgoing messages.Select Other settings and from the following:Save incoming text messages — to automatically save incoming text message on the device, on the UIM card, or on the device only when the UIM card memory is fullMessage font size — to change the font size when reading and writing messagesMessage overwriting — When the message memory is full, your device cannot receive any new messages. To choose which messages are overwritten when new ones arrive, select Sent items only, Inbox only, or S. items & Inbox.Save sent messages — to select whether to save sent messages to the Sent items folderQueue if no digital— to select whether messages that fail to send are stored in the Outbox folder
28Multimedia messages settingsSelect Menu > Messaging > Multimedia messages > Message settings and from the following:Save sent messages — Select whether the multimedia messages you send are saved to the Sent items folder.Delivery reports — Select whether to receive message delivery reports.Default slide timing — Set the default time for slides in multimedia messages.Allow multimedia reception — Select whether to receive multimedia messages. To only receive multimedia messages when you are in your home network, select In home network (network service). For more information, contact your service provider.Incoming multimedia messages Incoming multimedia messages — Select whether incoming multimedia messages are retrieved automatically or manually, or not at all.Allow advertisements — Select whether to block or allow advertisements (network service) sent as multimedia messages. For more information, contact your service provider.
29Write and send a text message1. Select Menu > Messaging > Text message > Create message.2. To send the message to one recipient, select Add > Contacts, the recipient, and Select.3. To send the message to many recipients, select Add > Contact groups, the group, and Select.Write and send a multimedia messageTo check availability and to subscribe to the multimedia messaging service (network service), contact your service provider.Only devices that have compatible features can receive and display multimedia messages. A multimedia message can contain objects such as images, video clips, and sound clips. The appearance of a message may vary depending on the receiving device.The wireless network may limit the size of MMS messages. If the inserted picture exceeds this limit, the device may make it smaller so that it can be sent by MMS.
30To send a multimedia message, do the following:1. Select Menu > Messaging > Multimedia messages > Create message.2. Select Insert, a multimedia folder and the file you want to send.3. Press scroll key to select the second or third files.4. Select Send to insert the files into the message.5. Enter the phone number or e-mail address for your recipient, or select Add to retrieve a number or address from the contacts list.6. Enter a subject for the message and select Send.Read and reply to a messageWhen you receive a message, a notification and are displayed.1. Select Show to read the message or Exit to dismiss the notification. in the standby mode indicates that you have unread messages in your inbox.2. Select Reply and from the available options.
313. Enter your reply, and select Send.Inbox, Sent items, and Drafts foldersAll incoming text and multimedia messages are saved in the Inbox folder. Outbox contains unsent and failed messages.If you have set the device to save the sent messages, they are saved in the Sent items folder. To save the message you are writing to the Drafts folder to edit and send later, select Options > Save as draft (text message) or Save message (multimedia message). Delete messagesIf your message memory is full and you have incoming messages, blinks in the standby mode. To receive the messages, delete some of the old messages.To delete a message, select Menu > Messaging > Text messages or Multimedia messages, the message, and Options > Delete > Yes.
32To delete all text messages in a folder, select Menu > Messaging > Text messages > Delete messages > All, All read, All unread and the folder.To delete all multimedia messages in a folder, select Menu > Messaging > Multimedia messages > Delete messages and the folder.Voice messagesTo activate voice mail (network service), contact your service provider. When you subscribe to the service, you receive voice mailbox number. Save the number to your device. For more information, contact your service provider.To listen to your voice messages, select Menu > Messaging >Voice message >Listen to voice messages, or press and hold 1 in the standby mode.Minibrowser messageMinibrowser messaging is a network service. See "Network services", p. 8 for more information.
33Minibrowser (network service) allows you to check your e-mail messages with your device. Select Menu > Messaging > Minibrowser messages.Important: Exercise caution when opening messages. Messages may contain malicious software or otherwise be harmful to your device or PC.■ContactsTo search for a contact, select Menu >Contacts > Names > Options > Find, and enter the first character of the contact name. Matching contacts are displayed. To change the text input method, select #. To edit the detail, set speed dial, or add voice tag for contact, highlight the contact, and select Details > Options and from the available options. To define how the contact names are displayed, select Menu > Contacts > Settings and from the available options. To view how much memory your contacts information is using, select Memory status.
34To copy or move contacts from your device to the UIM card, or from the UIM card to your device, select Menu > Contacts > Move contacts or Copy contacts.To empty your contacts list, select Menu > Contacts > Delete all contacts.GroupsGroups allow you to send messages to a designated group of people. To add a new group, select Menu > Contacts > Groups > Add, the detail for the group, and Save. Voice tagYou can record voice tags for contacts to call them using voice dialling. See "Voice dialing", p. 22. Speed dialsSpeed dialling allows you call a contact just by pressing and holding a key.To call your voice mailbox, press and hold 1 in the standby mode. To assign a phone number to another number key,
35select Menu > Contacts > 1-touch dialng > a number key from 2-9, and Assign. Enter the phone number you want to assign to the key, or select Search to retrieve the number from your contacts. ■LogTo view your most recent missed or received calls or dialled numbers, select Menu > Log > Missed calls, Received calls, or Dialed numbers. You can view the date and time of the call, edit, view, or call the registered phone number, send a text message to it, or save it to your contacts.To view all of the numbers chronologically, select Call log. To view the contacts to whom you most recently sent messages, select Message recipients.To delete calls from the log, select Menu > Log > Clear log lists and from the available options.To view the approximate duration of calls, select Menu > Log > Call duration. To reset the timers, select Clear timers, enter your lock code, and select OK.
36To view the duration or amount of data sent or received during data and fax calls (network service) or using the minibrowser (network service), select Menu > Log > Data/fax calls or Minibrowser calls. ■SettingsFrom this menu, you can adjust various device settings. ProfilesProfiles define how your device reacts when you receive a call or message, and how your keypad sounds when you press a key. You can personalise ringing options, keypad tones, and other settings for each of the available profiles. The available profiles are: General, Silent, Meeting, Outdoor, Flight, and two customisable ones.To activate or customise a profile or set a time limit for a profile, select Menu > Settings > Profiles, a profile, and Activate, Personalise, or Timed.
37ThemesA theme contains various elements for personalising your device.To change the theme for your device, select Menu > Settings > Themes, select a theme, and Apply. Important: To make a phone call, disconnect the USB data cable.To be asked for the purpose of the connection each time when the cable is connected, select Menu > Settings > Connectivity > USB data cable > Ask on connection.To use the PC Suite to transfer files between your device and PC:1. Connect your device and your PC with a CA-101 USB data cable.2. If asked to select the connection mode, select PC Suite.

Select the device function you want to tag, select Add > Start and speak the voice tag clearly into the microphone. After recording the voice tags, you may change or delete them.
44To activate a voice command, press and hold the right selection key in the standby mode. When Speak now is displayed, say the voice tag clearly into the microphone.If a match is found, the function is activated. If a match is not found, the message No match found is displayed.EnhancementsTo connect a compatible enhancement to your device, select Menu > Settings > Enhancements .To select the profile automatically activated when your phone is connected to the charger, select Charger > Default profile.To optimise the sound quality when using a t-coil hearing aid, select Hearing aid > T-coil hearing aid mode > On.SecurityTo set the security settings for your device, select Menu > Settings > Security > Change lock code, Security level, PIN code request, Change PIN code, Call restrictions, or Voice privacy.
45NetworkThe Network menu allows you to customise how your device chooses which network to operate in while you are within or away from your primary or home system. Your device is set to search for the most effective network. The battery intended for use with this device is BL-4C 860 mAh Li-lon battery. This device is intended for use when supplied with power from the following charger: AC-6U. The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times, but it will eventually wear out. When the talk and standby times are noticeably shorter than normal, replace the battery.
