SWITCH ON SAFELY af Do not switch the device on when wireless phone use is prohibited or when it may cause interference or danger. ROAD SAFETY COMES FIRST Dr Obey all local laws. Always keep your hands free to operate the vehicle while driving. Your first consideration while driving should be road safety. INTERFERENCE All wireless devices may be susceptible to interference, which could affect performance. SWITCH OFF IN RESTRICTED AREAS Follow any restrictions. Switch the device off in aircraft, near medical equipment, fuel, chemicals, or blasting areas. QUALIFIED SERVICE Only qualified personnel may install or repair this product. ENHANCEMENTS AND BATTERIES Use only approved enhancements and batteries. Do not connect incompatible products. WATER-RESISTANCE Your device is not water-resistant. Keep it dry. af ■ About your device Dr The wireless device (RM-430) described in this guide is approved for use on the CDMA 1900 network. Contact your service provider for more information about networks. When using the features in this device, obey all laws and respect local customs, privacy and legitimate rights of others, including copyrights. Copyright protection may prevent some images, music, and other content from being copied, modified, or transferred. Warning: To use any features in this device, the device must be switched on. Do not switch the device on when wireless device use may cause interference or danger. ■ Network services af To use the device you must have service from a wireless service provider. Many of the features require special network features. These features are not available on all networks; other networks may require that you make specific arrangements with your service provider before you can use the network services. Your service provider can give you instructions and explain what charges will apply. Some networks may have limitations that affect how you can use network services. For instance, some networks may not support all language-dependent characters and services. Dr Your service provider may have requested that certain features be disabled or not activated in your device. If so, these features will not appear on your device menu. Your device may also have a special configuration such as changes in menu names, menu order, and icons. Contact your service provider for more information. General information ■ Access codes The security code supplied with the device helps to protect your device against unauthorised use. The preset code is 12345. af You can change the code, and set the phone to request the code. Keep the code secret and in a safe place separate from your phone. Dr If you forget the code and your phone is locked, your phone will require service and additional charges may apply. For more information, contact a Nokia Care point or your device dealer. The PIN code supplied with the UIM card helps to protect the card against unauthorised use. If you enter the PIN code incorrectly three times in succession, you are asked for the PUK code. If you do not have it, contact your service provider. To set how your device uses the access codes and security settings, select Menu > Settings > Security. ■ Nokia support on the web Dr af Check www.nokia.com/support or your local Nokia website for the latest version of this guide, additional information, downloads, and services related to your Nokia product. 10 1. Get started ■ Install the UIM card and battery Keep all UIM cards out of the reach of small children. For availability and information on using UIM card services, contact your UIM card vendor. This may be the service provider or other vendor. Dr af Note: Always switch off the power and disconnect the charger and any other device before removing the cover. Avoid touching electronic components while changing the cover. Always store and use the device with the cover attached. 1. To remove the back cover of the device, press the release button on the bottom, and lift the back cover. 11 2. Insert your finger into the finger grip and lift the battery from its compartment. Dr af 3. Keep the bevelled corner of the UIM card facing up and matching along the corresponding bevelled corner of the card holder. 4. Insert the UIM card into the holder with the gold-coloured contacts facing down, matching up with the gold-coloured contacts on the device. 12 5. Position the battery so the gold-coloured contacts match up with those on the device, and insert the battery into the battery slot. 6. Push down on the other end of the battery to snap the battery into place. af 7. Align the back cover with the back of the device. To lock it, press the bottom of the back cover. ■ Charge the battery Dr Warning: Use only batteries, chargers, and enhancements approved by Nokia for use with this particular model. The use of any other types may invalidate any approval or warranty, and may be dangerous. Check the model number of any charger before use with this device. This device is intended for use when supplied with power from an AC-6 charger. The battery intended for use with this device is the BL-4C. 13 For availability of approved enhancements, please check with your dealer. When you disconnect the power cord of any enhancement, grasp and pull the plug, not the cord. 1. Plug the charger transformer into a standard wall outlet. 2. Insert the charger output plug into the socket at the left side of the device. af If the battery is completely discharged, it may take a few minutes before the charging indicator appears on the display or before any calls can be made. Dr ■ Switch your device on or off To switch your device on or off, press and hold the power key for at least 2 seconds. Warning: Do not switch on the device when wireless device use is prohibited or when it may cause interference or danger. 14 ■ Normal operating position Your device has an internal antenna. Hold the device with the antenna pointed up and over your shoulder. Dr af Note: As with any radio transmitting device, avoid touching the antenna area unnecessarily while the antenna is transmitting or receiving. Contact with such an antenna affects the communication quality and may cause the device to operate at a higher power level than otherwise needed and may reduce the battery life. 15 2. Your phone ■ Keys and parts (front) 1 — Earpiece 2 — Display screen 4 — Call key af 5 — Keypad 3 — Left selection key 6 — Power/End key 7 — Right selection key Dr 8 — 4-way navigation key (hereafter referred to as scroll key) 9 — Middle selection key 10 — Press and hold the * key to activate the radio function (if headset is connected) 11 — Press and hold the # key to toggle between silent and general profiles 16 ■ Keys and parts (side) 1 — Charger/USB port 2 — Headset port 3 — Device strap eyelet af 4 — Loudspeaker ■ Standby mode and shortcuts Dr Depending on your wireless service provider and the model number of your device, some or all of the following selection keys may appear in the standby mode. The start screen is home base and indicates your device is in the standby mode. 1 — Name of the network or operator logo 2 — Signal strength of the wireless network 3 — Battery charge level 17 4 — Left selection key (Go to) 5 — Middle selection key (Menu) 6 — Right selection key (Names) For shortcuts of scroll key, see "My shortcuts," p. 38. ■ Keyguard af The keyguard locks the keypad to prevent keys from being pressed accidentally. If the keypad is locked, it unlocks when you receive a call. After the call, the keypad is automatically locked. Dr To set the keypad to lock automatically after a preset time delay when the device is in the standby mode and no function of the device has been used, select Menu > Settings > Phone > Automatic keyguard > On, set the delay time in mm:ss format, and then select OK. To deactivate the feature, select Off. When the keyguard is on, calls may be possible to the official emergency number programmed into your device. To unlock the keypad, select Unlock, and press * within 2 seconds. 18 To lock the keypad, select Menu, and press * within 5 seconds. ■ Data transfer af To use the USB data cable to transfer data and files between your device and a compatible PC, install Nokia PC Suite software on the PC first. Connect your device to the PC with the USB data cable, and start the synchronization from the PC. You may find PC Suite and related information on the Nokia web site at http://www.nokia.com/pcsuite. Dr Important: Do not make calls when the USB data cable is connected to the device. 19 3. Call functions ■ Make and answer a call af To make a call, enter the phone number, including the country code and area code if necessary. To call the number, press the call key. To increase or decrease the volume of the earpiece or headset during the phone call, use the scroll key. Dr To answer an incoming call, press the call key or the middle selection key. To reject the call without answering, press the end key. ■ Make a conference call Conference calling (network service) allows you to talk to two other people at the same time. 1. Call the first participant. 2. Select Options > New call, and call the next participant. 3. When the call is answered, to set up the conference call, press the call key. 20 4. To end the conference call, select Options > End all calls, or press the end key. ■ Loudspeaker To use your device handsfree during a call, select Loudsp. Warning: Do not hold the device near your ear when the loudspeaker is in use because the volume may be extremely loud. af To deactivate the loudspeaker during a call, select Normal. Dr The loudspeaker is deactivated automatically when a call (or a call attempt) ends or when certain enhancements are connected. 21 4. Text entry You can enter text using traditional text input , and predictive text input . To change the text input method and to switch between upper and lower case, press the # key. To set the writing language, select Options > Writing language. af ■ Traditional text input Dr To use traditional text input, press a number key, 1 to 9, repeatedly until the desired character appears. To add a space, press 0. To add a number, press and hold the desired number key. To get a list of special characters, press *. ■ Predictive text input Predictive text input is based on a built-in dictionary to which you can add new words. To activate predictive text input, select Options > Prediction options > Prediction > On. To set the prediction type, select Prediction type > Normal or Word sugg. 22 To get a list of special characters, when using predictive text input, press and hold *; if there is no active word, press *. Dr af If the displayed word is the one you want, press 0, and start writing the next word. To change the word, press * repeatedly until the word you want appears. If ? is displayed after the word, the word is not in the dictionary. To add the word to the dictionary, select Spell, enter the word (using traditional text input), and select Save. 23 5. Menu functions The device functions are grouped into menus. Not all menu functions or option items are described here. af In the standby mode, select Menu and the desired menu and submenu. To exit the current level of menu, select Exit or Back. To return to the standby mode directly, press the end key. ■ Messaging Dr The message services can only be used when they are supported by your network or service provider. Message settings To edit your message settings, select Menu > Messaging > Message settings > Sending options and the setting you wish to change: Priority — Select the priority of the message as Normal or Urgent 24 Delivery reports — A note is sent to you confirming delivery of the message. Select On or Off. Send callback number — The callback number is sent to the recipient. Select On or Off. Signature — Select whether you want to attach a signature to your messages. Select On or Off. af To change other settings, select Menu > Messaging > Message settings > Other settings and the relevant setting: Save incoming text messages — Set where incoming messages are stored, select Save to UIM then phone if mem. full, Phone only or UIM card only Dr Message font size — Change the font size Message overwriting — When the message memory is full, you cannot receive new messages. You can set your device to automatically replace old messages with new ones in certain folders. Select Sent items only, Inbox only, or S. items & Inbox. To deactivate this feature, select Off. Save sent messages — You can set whether messages are saved automatically to the sent items folder when sent. Select Always save, Always prompt or Off. 25 Queue msgs. when digital unavailable — You can store in the outbox messages that can be sent later when digital service is available. Select On, On prompt, or Off. Create message af 1. Select Menu > Messaging > Create message, and compose a message using the keypad. To compose a picture message (network service), select Options > Insert picture. Scroll to a picture, and select Use or View > Use. To go quickly to create message, in the standby mode, scroll left. Dr 2. Enter the recipient’s phone number. To retrieve a phone number from your contacts or the recently used recipients list, select Add > Recently used or Contacts, and the recipients. To send to a distribution list, select Add > Distribution lists, and then choose a distribution list created in your device. 3. To send the message, in the message editor screen, select Send. 26 af Note: Your device may not indicate whether the message is received at the intended destination. For more details about messaging services, contact your service provider. The picture message function can be used only if it is supported by your network operator or service provider. Only compatible devices that offer picture message features can receive and display picture messages. Voice messages Dr Voice mail is a network service. If you subscribe to voice mail, your service provider will activate the service and give you a voice mailbox number to save to your device. For more details about voice messages, contact your service provider. To listen to the voice messages received in your voice mail box, select Menu > Messaging >Voice messages > Listen to voice messages. 27 Send numeric page You can send a callback number to the recipient as a message so they can call you back directly. Select Menu > Messaging > Send numeric page. Read and reply af Messages are automatically stored in the inbox after they have been read or if you select Exit when a notification appears in the standby mode. Messages that are unsent, or that failed to be sent, are automatically stored in the outbox folder. Dr When you receive a message, a note and the unopened letter icon ( ) are displayed. 1. To read the message, select Show, or, to dismiss the notification, select Exit. Scroll to view the whole message, if necessary. 2. Select Reply > Empty screen, Original text, Template, or other preset reply. 3. Enter your reply, select Send. 28 Distribution lists You can create lists of up to ten recipients. These lists can be used to quickly address a text message to a group. To create a new distribution list, in the standby mode, select Menu > Messaging > Distribution lists > New list (if the list is empty) or Options > Create new list to create additional lists. To populate your list, select Add new and a contact from your contacts list. af To use, rename, or modify a distribution list, highlight the distribution list, and select Options > Send message, Rename list, Clear list, or Delete list. Dr Delete messages If your message memory is full and you have more messages waiting, blinks in the standby mode. To delete a single message, select Menu > Messaging, and the folder containing the message. Select the message and Options > Delete > Yes. The messages that are locked cannot be deleted. To delete locked messages, unlock them first. Select the locked message, and Options > Unlock. 29 To delete all messages in a folder, select Menu > Messaging > Delete messages and one of the following: All — Select Inbox, Sent items, Outbox, Drafts, Saved text msgs., or the user defined folder and Done. To confirm the deletion when promoted, select Yes. All read — Select Inbox, Sent items, Outbox, Drafts, Saved text msgs., or the user defined folder and Done. To confirm the deletion when prompted, select Yes. af All unread — Select Inbox, Saved text msgs., or the user defined folder and Done. To confirm the deletion when prompted, select Yes. Dr ■ Contacts You can save names and phone numbers (contacts) in the phone memory and the UIM card memory. The phone memory can save up to 500 contacts with multiple numbers and text items for each contact. You can also save an image or a tone for a limited number of contacts. 30 The UIM card memory can save names with one phone number attached to them. The contacts saved in the UIM card memory are indicated by . To add a new contact, select Menu > Contacts > Names > Add (if the contact list is empty) or Options > Add new contact, and enter the name and the phone number. Names and numbers are saved in the used memory. af To search for a contact, select Menu > Contacts > Names, and scroll through the list of contacts; or select Options > Search, enter the first letter of the name for which you are searching. Dr Settings Settings allows you to determine which memory is in use, how your phone numbers are viewed, and the memory status of contacts in your phone and UIM card. Select Menu > Contacts > Settings and from the following: Memory in use — to determine which memory is in use, the phone, the UIM card, or both 31 Contacts view — to select how names and numbers are viewed in the contacts list Name display — to select whether the contact’s first or last name is displayed first Font size — to set the font size af Groups Memory status — to view the amount of space available in the phone or UIM card Dr To arrange the names and phone numbers saved in the memory into caller groups with different ringing tones and group images, select Menu > Contacts > Groups. Delete contacts To delete all the contacts from the phone or UIM card memory, select Menu > Contacts > Delete all contacts > From phone mem. or From UIM card. Confirm with the security code. To delete a contact, search for the desired contact, and select Menu > Contacts > Names > Options > Delete contact. 32 Move or copy contacts To move or copy a contact between the UIM card memory and the phone memory, select Menu > Contacts > Names. Select the contact to move or copy and Options > Move contact or Copy contact. To move or copy several contacts, select the contacts and Options > Mark. When you have marked the selected contacts, select Options > Move marked or Copy marked. af To move or copy all contacts between the UIM card memory and the phone memory, select Menu > Contacts > Move contacts or Copy contacts. Dr Speed dials Your device can dial a phone number with one keypress. You can assign phone numbers to the number keys, 2 to 9. To assign a phone number to a number key, select Menu > Contacts > Speed dials, and scroll to the number to assign as the shortcut. Select Assign, or if a number has already been assigned to the key, select Options > Change. 33 Business card You can send and receive a person’s contact information from a compatible device that supports the vCard standard as a business card. To send a business card, search for the contact, and select Details >Options > Send bus. card. af When you receive a business card, to save the business card in the phone memory, select Show >Save. To discard the business card, select Exit > Yes. ■ Log Dr Log stores information about the last 50 missed, received, or dialed calls (network service). It also adds the total duration of all calls. When the number of calls exceeds 50, the most recent call replaces the oldest. To access the log, your device must be switched on and inside the network service area. Select Menu > Log > Call log, Missed calls, Received calls, or Dialled numbers. From here you can view the date and time of a call; edit, view, or call the registered 34 phone number; save it to contacts; or delete it from the phone memory. You can also send a text message. To view the contacts to whom you most recently sent messages, select Menu > Log > Message recipients. To delete the missed, dialled, or received calls from the phone memory, select Menu > Log > Clear log lists and the item you would like to clear. af To view the approximate duration of the last call, all received calls, all dialled calls, or all calls, select Menu > Log > Call duration. To reset the timers, select Clear timers, enter your security code, and select OK. Dr Note: The actual time invoiced for calls by your service provider may vary, depending on network features, rounding off for billing, and so forth. ■ Settings In this menu, you can adjust various phone settings. To reset menu settings to their default values, select Menu > Settings > Restore factory sett. 35 Profiles Profiles define, for example, how your device reacts when you receive a call or message, or how your keypad sounds when you press a key. Ringing options, keypad tones, and other settings for each of the available profiles can be personalised to suit your needs. af To activate or personalise a profile, or set a timed expiration for a profile, select Menu > Settings > Profiles, a profile and Activate, Personalise or Timed. Display settings Select Menu > Settings > Display and from the following: Dr Wallpaper — to set a background image that is displayed when the device is in the standby mode Standby mode font colour — to select the colour for the texts on the display in the standby mode Screen saver — to choose a screen saver for the device display Power saver — to save battery power, a digital clock is displayed when no function of the device is used for a certain time 36 Sleep mode — to select whether the display is switched off to save battery power during inactivity Colour schemes — to personalise the colours on the device display Tones settings Backlight time-out — to control the backlight time-out of your device display af To set the tone of the device, select Menu > Settings > Tones and from the available options. Dr Date and time settings Select Menu > Settings > Date and time and from the following: Clock — to hide or show the clock, set the time, change the time zone and format Date — to hide or show the date, set the date, change the date format and date separator Auto-update of date & time — to activate or deactivate the automatic-update of the date and time 37 When the automatic-update of the date and time is activated, network time will replace the time and date of your device. This feature supports alarm clock, calendar, and time stamping of the call lists. My shortcuts Shortcuts give you quick access to frequently use phone functions. af To allocate functions to the shortcut keys, select Menu > Settings > My shortcuts, the relevant function and Left selection key, Right selection key, or Navigation key. Dr Call settings Select Menu > Settings > Call and from the following: Anykey answer — to answer an incoming call by briefly pressing any key, except the end key, left selection key and right selection key Automatic redial — to set your device to redial a number after an unsuccessful call attempt 38 Speed dialling — to select whether the number keys (2-9) can be used for one-touch dialling (calling a number by pressing and holding a key) Calling card — to save up to four calling cards in your device to use for long distance calls Abbreviated dialling — to save a 5 or 6-digit dialling prefix that will allow you to dial a 10-digit number by entering the last 4 or 5 digits af International prefix — to make international calls using the + sign as the international prefix. The device replaces the international access code with the + sign in a saved phone number when creating a call. Dr Data/fax calls — to set the device to send or receive data or fax calls when a terminal, such as a PDA or PC, is connected (network service) Call summary — to display the time spent on a call at the end of the call Show call time on display — to select whether the call timer is displayed and running when you have a call in progress 39 Ringing tone for no caller ID — to set a tone for incoming calls that do not have a caller ID Phone settings Select Menu > Settings > Phone and from the following: Phone language — to select the language for the display text af Memory status — to view the size of memory available on your device Automatic keyguard — to set the keypad to lock automatically after a preset time delays Dr DTMF tones — to set the tone duration when you press the keys on your keypad Start-up tone — to select whether the device sounds a start-up tone when it is switched on Switch off tone — to select whether the device sounds a switch-off tone when switched off Welcome note — to write a welcome note that briefly appears when you switch your device on 40 Flight query > On — the device asks every time when it is switched on whether the flight profile shall be used. With flight profile, all radio connections are switched off. The flight profile should be used in areas sensitive to radio emissions. Confirm UIM service actions — to request notification, when your service provider makes changes to UIM-related services af Help text activation — to display brief descriptions for most menu items Enhancements settings Dr The enhancements settings menu is shown only if the device is or has been connected to a compatible enhancement. Select Menu > Settings > Enhancements > Headset or Charger. Network The network menu allows you to customise the roam call ringing tone, and the way your device chooses a network 41 in which to operate while you are within or outside of your primary or home system. Your device is set to search for the most effective network. If your device cannot find a preferred network, it selects a network automatically based on the option you choose in the network menu. The menu options you see in your device are based on your service provider’s network. The network determines which options actually appear in the device menu. For more information, check with your service provider. af Select Menu > Settings > Network > Single band phones or Roam call ringing tone. Dr Network services The following features are network services. To check the availability of the services, please contact your service provider. Select Menu > Settings > Network services and from the following: Call divert — to divert incoming calls to other phone numbers 42 Call waiting — to request the network to send a beep during a call, when another call is coming Send my caller ID — to send or block the display of your number when you make a call af Phone details Network feature setting — to activate network services in your device by using feature codes received from your service provider Dr You can view device-related details. In the standby mode, Select Menu > Settings > Phone details >User details, Version details, System details or Icon details. ■ Gallery To manage graphics, tones, recordings, and received files, select Menu > Gallery > Graphics, Tones, Recordings, or Receiv. files. 43 ■ Media Radio The FM radio depends on an antenna other than the wireless device antenna. A compatible headset needs to be attached to the device for the FM radio to function properly. af Warning: Listen to music at a moderate level. Continuous exposure to high volume may damage your hearing. Do not hold the device near your ear when the loudspeaker is in use, because the volume may be extremely loud. Dr Listen to the radio 1. Connect a headset to the device. 2. Select Menu > Media > Radio, or press and hold the * key in the standby mode. The channel location number, the name of the radio channel (if you have saved the channel), and the frequency of the radio channel are displayed. 3. If you have already saved radio channels, scroll up or down to the channel you would like to listen to. 44 You can also select a radio channel location by briefly pressing the corresponding number keys. Set radio frequencies 1. You can save up to 20 radio channels. When the radio is on, to change the radio frequency in 0.10 MHz steps, select or . To start the channel search, select and hold or , searching stops when a channel is found. af 2. To set the frequency, press the * key, or press and hold the numeric key, 1, 8 or 9, and then enter the frequency and confirm the entry. Dr To save the channel to a memory location, select Options > Save station. Then enter the name of the channel, select OK. Basic radio functions When the radio is on, select Options and one of the following: Switch off — to turn off the radio Volume — to adjust the radio volume Mute/Unmute — to turn the radio sound on or off 45 Save station — to save a new station and is displayed only when the selected frequency is not saved Stations — to select the list of saved stations. To delete, rename or organise a station, scroll to the desired station, and select Options > Delete station, Rename or Organise. Search all stations — to search for new radio stations Set frequency — to enter the frequency of the desired radio station af Settings — to set the radio using loudspeaker or headset, and the radio in monophonic sound or in stereo Dr You can normally make a call or answer an incoming call while listening to the radio. During the call, the volume of the radio is muted. Recorder This feature allows you to record speech or sound with your device. The maximum length of each recording is 3 minutes, depending on the available memory spaces. To record speech or sound, select Menu > Media > Recorder. To start the recording, select . To pause the recording, select . To end the recording, select . The 46 recording is saved in Menu > Gallery > Recordings. To listen to the latest recording, select Options > Play last recorded. To list the recordings, select Options > Recordings list. ■ Organiser af Your device contains features to help organise your everyday life, including an alarm clock, calendar, calculator, timer, world clock, and stopwatch. Alarm clock Dr The alarm clock works with the device clock. Select Menu > Organiser > Alarm clock > Alarm time. Enter the time in hh:mm format, and select OK. is displayed in the standby mode. To set the device to alert you on selected days of the week, select Repeat alarm > Repetition days. To select the alarm tone or to set a radio station to play when the alarm expires, select Alarm tone. If you select the radio as an alarm tone, connect the headset to the 47 device. The device uses the last station you listened to as the alarm, and alarm plays through the loudspeaker. To set a snooze time-out, select Snooze time-out and the time. af Calendar To stop the alarm, select Stop. If you select Snooze, the alarm stops for the selected snooze time-out and then resumes. To open the calendar, scroll right or select Menu > Organiser > Calendar. Dr To view a specific date from the calendar view, select Options > Go to date, enter the date, and press OK. To add a note to a specific date from the month view (with the go to date highlighted), select the date and Options > Make a note > Meeting, Call, Birthday, Memo, or Reminder. Your device asks for further information depending on which note you select. Any days or dates that appear in bold font contain calendar notes, such as a meeting or reminder. 48 You can send a calendar note from your calendar to another compatible device as a calendar note or as a text message. To send a note, select View > Options> Send note. When you receive a note, to save the calendar note in the phone memory, select Show > Save. To discard the calendar note, select Exit > Yes. af Calculator Select Settings to view more options. The calculator in your device adds, subtracts, multiplies, divides, calculates the square and the square root, and converts currency values. Dr Note: This calculator has a limited accuracy and is designed for simple calculations. Select Menu > Organiser > Calculator. Enter the first number in the calculation. Select # for a decimal point if necessary. Select Options > Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide, Square, Square root, or Change sign. Enter the second number if needed, and select Equals. To start a new calculation, select and hold Clear. 49 af You can convert foreign currency to domestic currency, or vice versa. To save the exchange rate, select Options > Exchange rate > Foreign unit in domestic units or Domestic unit in foreign units. Enter the exchange rate, press the # key for a decimal point, and select OK. The exchange rate remains in the memory until you replace it with another one. To perform the currency conversion, enter the amount to be converted, and select Options > In foreign or In domestic. ■ Applications Dr Applications allows you to download, manage and use applications, tones, and images. Some functions under the Applications menu are network services. See "Network services," p. 8 for more information. ■ Games Your device software may include some games specially 50 designed for this Nokia device. To display the games, in the standby mode, select Menu > Games. ■ UIM services Dr af Your UIM card may provide additional services. You can access this menu only if it is supported by your UIM card. The name and contents of the menu depend on the available services. For information, contact your service provider. 51 6. Enhancements Warning: Use only batteries, chargers and enhancements approved by Nokia for use with this particular model. The use of any other types may invalidate any approval or warranty, and may be dangerous. Power af For availability of approved enhancements, please check with your dealer. When you disconnect the power cord of any enhancement, grasp and pull the plug, not the cord. Dr • Standard 860 mAh Li-Ion Battery (BL-4C) • Travel Charger (AC-6) Audio • Headset (HS-9) Warning: When you use the headset, your ability to hear outside sounds may be affected. Do not use the headset where it can endanger your safety. 52 7. Battery and charger information af Your device is powered by a rechargeable battery. The battery intended for use with this device is BL-4C 860 mAh Li-Ion battery. This device is intended for use when supplied with power from the following chargers: Nokia AC-6. The exact charger model number may vary depending on the type of plug. The plug variant is identified by one of the following: E, EB, X, AR, U, A, C or UB. Dr The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times, but it will eventually wear out. When the talk and standby times are noticeably shorter than normal, replace the battery. Use only Nokia approved batteries, and recharge your battery only with Nokia approved chargers designated for this device. Use of an unapproved battery or charger may present a risk of fire, explosion, leakage, or other hazard. If a battery is being used for the first time or if the battery has not been used for a prolonged period, it may be 53 necessary to connect the charger, then disconnect and reconnect it to begin charging the battery. If the battery is completely discharged, it may take several minutes before the charging indicator appears on the display or before any calls can be made. Always switch the device off and disconnect the charger before removing the battery. af Unplug the charger from the electrical plug and the device when not in use. Do not leave a fully charged battery connected to a charger, since overcharging may shorten its lifetime. If left unused, a fully charged battery will lose its charge over time. Dr Always try to keep the battery between 15°C and 25°C (59°F and 77°F). Extreme temperatures reduce the capacity and lifetime of the battery. A device with a hot or cold battery may not work temporarily. Battery performance is particularly limited in temperatures well below freezing. Do not short-circuit the battery. Accidental shortcircuiting can occur when a metallic object such as a coin, clip, or pen causes direct connection of the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals of the battery. (These look like 54 metal strips on the battery.) This might happen, for example, when you carry a spare battery in your pocket or purse. Short-circuiting the terminals may damage the battery or the connecting object. Do not dispose of batteries in a fire as they may explode. Batteries may also explode if damaged. Dispose of batteries according to local regulations. Please recycle when possible. Do not dispose as household waste. Dr af Do not dismantle, cut, open, crush, bend, deform, puncture, or shred cells or batteries. In the event of a battery leak, do not allow the liquid to come in contact with the skin or eyes. In the event of such a leak, flush your skin or eyes immediately with water, or seek medical help. Do not modify, remanufacture, attempt to insert foreign objects into the battery, or immerse or expose it to water or other liquids. Improper battery use may result in a fire, explosion, or other hazard. If the device or battery is dropped, especially on a hard surface, and you believe the battery has been damaged, take it to a service centre for inspection before continuing to use it. 55 Use the battery only for its intended purpose. Never use any charger or battery that is damaged. Keep your battery out of the reach of small children. ■ Nokia battery authentication guidelines af Always use original Nokia batteries for your safety. To check that you are getting an original Nokia battery, purchase it from an authorised Nokia dealer, and inspect the hologram label using the following steps: Dr Successful completion of the steps is not a total assurance of the authenticity of the battery. If you have any reason to believe that your battery is not an authentic, original Nokia battery, you should refrain from using it, and take it to the nearest authorised Nokia service point or dealer for assistance. Your authorised Nokia service point or dealer will inspect the battery for authenticity. If authenticity cannot be verified, return the battery to the place of purchase. 56 Authenticate hologram 1. When you look at the hologram on the label, you should see the Nokia connecting hands symbol from one angle and the Nokia Original Enhancements logo when looking from another angle. Dr af 2. When you angle the hologram left, right, down and up, you should see 1, 2, 3 and 4 dots on each side respectively. What if your battery is not authentic? If you cannot confirm that your Nokia battery with the hologram on the label is an authentic Nokia battery, please do not use the battery. Take it to the nearest authorised Nokia service point or dealer for assistance. 57 The use of a battery that is not approved by the manufacturer may be dangerous and may result in poor performance and damage to your device and its enhancements. It may also invalidate any approval or warranty applying to the device. Dr af To find out more about original Nokia batteries, visit www.nokia.com/battery. 58 Care and maintenance Your device is a product of superior design and craftsmanship and should be treated with care. The following suggestions will help you protect your warranty coverage. af • Keep the device dry. Precipitation, humidity, and all types of liquids or moisture can contain minerals that will corrode electronic circuits. If your device does get wet, remove the battery, and allow the device to dry completely before replacing it. • Do not use or store the device in dusty, dirty areas. Its moving parts and electronic components can be damaged. Dr • Do not store the device in hot areas. High temperatures can shorten the life of electronic devices, damage batteries, and warp or melt certain plastics. • Do not store the device in cold areas. When the device returns to its normal temperature, moisture can form inside the device and damage electronic circuit boards. • Do not attempt to open the device other than as instructed in this guide. • Do not drop, knock, or shake the device. Rough handling can break internal circuit boards and fine mechanics. 59 • Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to clean the device. • Do not paint the device. Unauthorised antennas, modifications, or attachments could damage the device and may violate regulations governing radio devices. • Use chargers indoors. af • Always create a backup of data you want to keep, such as contacts and calendar notes. • To reset the device from time to time for optimum performance, power off the device and remove the battery. Disposal The crossed-out wheeled-bin symbol on your product, literature, or packaging reminds you that all electrical and electronic products, batteries, and accumulators must be taken to separate collection at the end of their working life. Keep them out of the reach of small children. ■ Operating environment af This device meets RF exposure guidelines when used either in the normal use position against the ear or when positioned at least 2.2 centimeters (7/8 inches) away from the body. When a carry case, belt clip, or holder is used for body-worn operation, it should not contain metal and should position the device the above-stated distance from your body. If interference occurs, consult your service provider. ■ Vehicles Dr af RF signals may affect improperly installed or inadequately shielded electronic systems in motor vehicles such as electronic fuel injection systems, electronic antiskid (antilock) braking systems, electronic speed control systems, and air bag systems. Do not end the call until given permission to do so. af ■ Certification information (SAR) This mobile device meets guidelines for exposure to radio waves. Dr Your mobile device is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designed not to exceed the limits for exposure to radio waves recommended by international guidelines.
