Do not switch the device on when wireless phone use

Obey all local laws. Always keep your hands free to
operate the vehicle while driving. Your first
consideration while driving should be road safety.
INTERFERENCE
All wireless devices may be susceptible to
interference, which could affect performance.
SWITCH OFF IN RESTRICTED AREAS
Follow any restrictions. Switch the device off in
aircraft, near medical equipment, fuel, chemicals, or
blasting areas.

Only qualified personnel may install or repair this

The wireless device (RM–685) described in this guide is approved
for use on the CDMA 800 MHz network. Contact your service
provider for more information about networks.

Warning: To use any features in this device, other than
the alarm clock, the device must be switched on. Do not
switch the device on when wireless device use may
cause interference or danger.
When connecting to any other device, read its user guide for
detailed safety instructions. Do not connect incompatible
products.
■Network services
To use the device you must have service from a wireless service
provider. Many of the features require special network features.
These features are not available on all networks; other networks
may require that you make specific arrangements with your
service provider before you can use the network services. Using
network services involves transmission of data. Check with your
service provider for details about fees in your home network and
when roaming in other networks. Your service provider can give
you instructions and explain what charges will apply. Some
networks may have limitations that affect how you can use
network services. For instance, some networks may not support
all language-dependent characters and services.
Your service provider may have requested that certain features be
disabled or not activated in your device. If so, these features will
not appear on your device menu. Your device may also have a

1. Get started
■Insert the UIM card and the battery
Always switch the device off and disconnect the charger
before removing the battery.
1. To remove the back cover, with
the back of the device facing
you, push to slide the back
cover toward the bottom of the
device.
2. Insert your finger into the finger
grip, and lift the battery from its
compartment.
3. With the contacts facing down
and the bevelled corner on the
card facing away from the top of
the device, insert the UIM card
into the holder.

4. Align the contacts of the battery
with those in the device, insert
the battery into the battery slot,
and push down the other end of
the battery to snap it into place.
5. Align the back cover with the
slots in the device, and push the
back cover toward the top of the
device until the cover is securely
in place.
■Insert microSD card
This device supports up to 16 GB microSD memory.
Use only compatible microSD card approved by Nokia.
Nokia uses approved industry standards for memory cards,
but some brands may not be fully compatible with this
device. Incompatible cards may damage the card and the
device and corrupt data stored on the card.

1. Insert the card into the microSD
card slot with the contact
surface facing down, push the
card until it is into place.
2. Close the back cover.
Important: Do not remove the memory card in the
middle of an operation when the card is being
accessed. Removing the card in the middle of an
operation may damage the memory card as well
as the device, and data stored on the card may be
corrupted.
■Charge the battery
Warning: Use only batteries, chargers, and
accessories approved by Nokia for use with this
particular model. The use of any other type may
invalidate any approval or warranty, and may be
dangerous.
Your battery has been partially charged at the factory. If
the device indicates a low charge, do the following:
1. Connect the charger to a wall outlet.

full charge, disconnect the
charger from the device, then
from the wall outlet.
You do not need to charge the battery for a specific length
of time, and youYou can use the device while it is
charging. If the battery is completely discharged, it may
take several minutes before any calls can be made.
■Switch your device on or off
To switch your device on or off, press and
hold the power key for at least 2 seconds.
■Normal operation position
Your device has an internal antenna.

position.

Note: As with any radio transmitting device, avoid
touching the antenna area unnecessarily while the
antenna is transmitting or receiving. Contact with
such an antenna affects the communication
quality and may cause the device to operate at a
higher power level than otherwise needed and
may reduce the battery life.
■Access codes
The lock code supplied with the device helps to protect
your device against unauthorised use. The default code is
1234. You can change the lock code and keep the new
code secret and in a safe place separate from your device.
If you forget the code and the device is locked, your device
will require service. Additional charges may apply, and all
the personal data in your device may be deleted. For more
information, contact Nokia Care Centre or your device
dealer. To change the code, see "Security", p. 52.
The PIN code within the UIM card protects the card from
unauthorised use. If you enter an incorrect PIN code for
three times, the PUK code is needed to unlock the device.

Here are tips on how you can contribute to
protecting the environment.
Save energy
When you have fully charged the battery and
disconnected the charger from the device, unplug the
charger from the wall outlet.
You do not need to charge your battery so often if you do
the following:
• Close and disable applications, services, and
connections when not in use.
• Decrease the brightness of the screen, if available in
your device.

• Set the device to enter the power saver mode after the
minimum period of inactivity, if available in your
device.

All the selection keys are configured by your service
provider. They may vary depending on your service
provider.
• To access the call log, press the call key once.
• To activate the radio function, press and hold the * key
for at least 3 seconds.
• To access the internet, press and hold the 0 key for at
least 3 seconds.
• To switch between Silent and General profile, press
and hold the # key for at least 3 seconds.

p. 47.
■Active standby mode
The active standby displays a list of selected device
features and information that you can directly access.

To activate the active standby, select Menu > Settings >
Display > Active standby > Active standby mode > On.
To view or customise the active standby key, see "Display",
p. 45.
In the standby mode, select the active standby key to
activate the navigation, then scroll up or down in the list,
and select Select, View, or Edit.
To stop navigation, select Exit.
To organise and change the active standby, select Options
and from available options.
■Keyguard
You can lock the keypad to prevent accidental keypresses.
To lock the keypad, select Menu, and press * within 5
seconds. To unlock the keypad, select Unlock, and press *
within 2 seconds.
When the keypad is locked, it unlocks if you receive a call.
When the call ends, it is locked automatically again.
To modify the default delay for the keyguard, see "Phone",
p. 49.

■Data transfer
To use the USB data cable to transfer data and files
between your device and a compatible PC, install Nokia PC
Suite software on the PC first. See "Connecting with a
USB data cable", p. 51.
You may find PC Suite and related information on the
Nokia website at www.nokia.com/pcsuite.
Important: Do not make calls when the USB data
cable is connected to the device.
■Flight profile
With the flight profile, all radio functions are deactivated,
but you can still access offline games, calendar, and
phone numbers. indicates that the flight profile is
active.
■Indicators
You have unread messages.
The keypad is locked.
The current profile is timed.

The phone does not ring for an incoming call or a
text message.
The phone vibrates for an incoming call or a text
message.
The alarm clock is activated.
Your device is connected to a computer using a
USB data cable.
A headset is connected to the device.
The battery charge level. The longer the bar, the
stronger the charge in the battery.

3. Call functions
■Make a call
1. Enter the phone number, including the country code
and area code if necessary.
2. Press the call key.
3. To end the call or to cancel the call attempt, press the
end key.
■Answer and reject a call
To answer an incoming call, press the call key or the
middle selection key.
To reject the call without answering, press the end key.
To adjust the volume of the earpiece or headset during the
phone call, press the scroll key left or right.
■Make a conference call
This service is network dependent.

2. When the first call is answered, select Options > New
call, and call the next participant.
3. When the second call is answered, to set up the
conference call, press the call key again.
4. To end the conference call, select Options > End all
calls, or press the end key.
■Loudspeaker
To use your device hands-free during a call, select Loudsp.
Warning: Do not hold the device near your ear
when the loudspeaker is in use because the
volume may be extremely loud.
To deactivate the loudspeaker during a call, select
Handset.
The loudspeaker is deactivated automatically when a call
ends or when certain accessories are connected.

4. Text entry
This device supports both simplified Chinese input
methods and English input methods.
The input methods described in this section may not be
applicable to the third-party applications, for example,
BREW applications.
To set the writing language while entering text (for
example, when writing messages), select Options >
Writing language, and the desired language.
■Chinese input
Chinese input is available when the writing language is
set as Simplified Chinese.
Use pinyin
The pinyin symbols are printed on the number keys.
1. Press the number key once for each pinyin symbol you
want to input (use "v" for "u").

2. Press the key 1 repeatedly until you get the desired
tone mark. Search for different matches.
3. If necessary, press * repeatedly to highlight the desired
pinyin combination.
4. Scroll to the desired Chinese character, and select OK.
Use strokes
1. In the standard stroke order, press the number keys to
input the strokes.
Tips: If you are not sure which stroke to use,
press the key 6 to enter a wildcard stroke. A
question mark will appear in the input area to
represent that stroke.
2. Scroll to the desired Chinese character, and select OK.
■English input
You can enter text using traditional text input , and
predictive text input . To switch between upper and
lower case, press the # key.

Traditional text input
Press a number key (2-9) repeatedly until the desired
letter appears.
If the next letter you want is located on the same key as
the present one, wait until the cursor appears, and enter
the next letter.
To enter a special character, repeatedly press the number
key 1 or press * to select from the most common
punctuation marks and special characters.
Predictive text input
The predictive text input is based on a built-in dictionary
to which you can also add new words.
1. Start writing a word, using the keys 2 to 9. Press each
key only once for one letter.
2. After a word is input and you find it is your desired one,
press the number key 0 to confirm.
When the word is not your desired one, press *
repeatedly to select the right word from the list.

If the ? character appears at the end of the word, this
means that your desired word is not available in the
dictionary.
To add a word to the dictionary, select Spell. Enter the
word using traditional text input, and select Save.
To write a compound word, enter the first part of the
word, and press the scroll key right to confirm. Then, write
the last part of the word, and press the key 0.
To enter a number, select Options > Insert number.
To insert a word directly without creating a new word in
the dictionary, select Options > Prediction options >
Insert word.

5. Navigate the menu
The device functions are grouped into menus. Not all
menu functions or option items are described here.
To exit the current menu level, select Exit or Back.
To return to the standby mode directly, press the end key.
You can control the way your device menu is displayed. By
default, the main menu is displayed in Grid with labels.
■Messaging
The messaging services can only be used when they
are supported by your network or service provider.
Important: Exercise caution when opening
messages. Messages may contain malicious
software or otherwise be harmful to your device
or PC.

Text messages
Create and send text messages
1. Select Menu > Messaging > Text messages > Create
message.
2. Enter the recipient’s phone number in the To: field. To
retrieve a phone number from the recently used
recipient list or your contacts, select Add > Recently
used or Contacts, and the recipients. To send to a
distribution list, select Add > Distribution list and a
distribution list.
3. Use the keypad, enter your message in the Message:
field, and select Send to send the message.
Note: The message sent icon or text on your
device screen does not indicate that the message
is received at the intended destination.
Text message settings
To edit your text message settings, select Menu >
Messaging > Text messages > Message settings and
Sending options or Other settings.

•Priority — Set the priority of messages as Normal or
Urgent.
•Delivery reports — Receive delivery reports (network
service).
•Send callback no. — Define a callback number to be
sent to all message recipients.
•Signature — Define a signature to be attached to the
bottom of your outgoing messages.
•Message validity — Set the validation period of the
messages.
Other settings:
•Save rcvd. text msgs. — Save the received text
messages on phone memory or UIM card.
•Message font size — Set the font of the message to
Small font, Normal font, or Large font.
•Message overwriting — Overwrite message in Inbox or
Sent items folder.
•Save sent messages — Overwrite message in Inbox or
Sent items folder.

•Queue if no digital — Save the messages in the Outbox
that can be sent later when the digital service is
available.
Multimedia messages
The multimedia messaging service (MMS) feature is
network dependent.
Create and send MMS
1. Select Menu > Messaging > MMS messages > Create
message.
2. Enter one or more phone numbers in the To: field, or to
retrieve a phone number from a memory, select Add >
Recently used, Contacts, Distribution list.
3. Enter the message subject in the Subject: field.
4. Enter the text to Message: field, and select Send to
send the MMS.
To add image, sound clip, attachements, or slide, select
Options > Add object > Image, Sound clip,
Attachments, or Slide.

The wireless network may limit the size of MMS messages.
If the inserted image exceeds the limits, the device may
minimize the image before sending it by MMS.
Read and reply MMS
You will get a notification after the MMS is completely
downloaded to your device. Select Show to view the
message, or select Exit to view it later.
1. To view a saved message in the standby mode, select
Menu > Messaging > MMS messages > Inbox and the
message.
2. To reply to a single recipient or all recipients, select
Options > Reply or Reply to all.
MMS settings
To edit your multimedia message settings, select Menu >
Messaging > MMS messages > Message settings and from
the following:
•Save sent messages — Save the sent messages to the
Sent items folder.
•Message validity — Set the validation period of the
messages.

•Delivery reports > Yes — Enable your device to receive
the delivery reports (network service).
•Send delivery note > On — Enable your device to
automatically send delivery reports to the sender
(network service).
•Default slide timing — Define the default time interval
between slides in a multimedia message.
•Allow MMS receptn. — Receive or restrict multimedia
messages.
•Incoming MMS msgs. — Retrieve your incoming
multimedia messages automatically or manually, or
reject them.
•Allow adverts — Receive advertisements.
•Access points — Choose the matched access point.
•Multim. centre server — Show the Multimedia server
centre address at http://mmsc.vnet.mobi.
Distribution lists
To create a new distribution list, in the standby mode,
select Menu > Messaging > Distribution lists > New list or
Options > Create new list to create additional lists.

To add a contact or contacts to the new distribution list
from your contact list, select Add new.
To use, rename, or modify a distribution list, select
Options > Send message, Rename list, Clear list, or Delete
list.
Voice messages
Voice mail is network dependent. Contact your service
provider for details.
To listen to the voice messages, select Menu > Messaging
> Voice messages > Listen to voice msgs.
Browser messages

Your device is powered by a rechargeable battery. The
battery intended for use with this device is BL–4C Li–Ion
battery. Nokia may make additional battery models
available for this device. This device is intended for use
when supplied with power from the following chargers:
Nokia AC–8C. The exact charger model number may vary
depending on the type of plug. The plug variant is
identified by one of the following: E, EB, X, AR, U, A, C or
UB.
The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of
times, but it will eventually wear out. When the talk and
standby times are noticeably shorter than normal, replace
the battery. Use only Nokia approved batteries, and
recharge your battery only with Nokia approved chargers
designated for this device. Use of an unapproved battery
or charger may present a risk of fire, explosion, leakage, or
other hazard.

If a battery is being used for the first time or if the battery
has not been used for a prolonged period, it may be
necessary to connect the charger, then disconnect and
reconnect it to begin charging the battery. If the battery is
completely discharged, it may take several minutes before
the charging indicator appears on the display or before
any calls can be made.
Always switch the device off and disconnect the charger
before removing the battery.
Unplug the charger from the electrical plug and the device
when not in use. Do not leave a fully charged battery
connected to a charger, since overcharging may shorten
its lifetime. If left unused, a fully charged battery will lose
its charge over time.
Always try to keep the battery between 15°C and 25°C
(59°F and 77°F). Extreme temperatures reduce the
capacity and lifetime of the battery. A device with a hot or
cold battery may not work temporarily. Battery

Do not short-circuit the battery. Accidental short-
circuiting can occur when a metallic object such as a coin,

Batteries may also explode if damaged. Dispose of
batteries according to local regulations. Please recycle

battery leak, do not allow the liquid to come in contact

Care and maintenance
Your device is a product of superior design and craftsmanship and
should be treated with care. The following suggestions will help
you protect your warranty coverage.
• Keep the device dry. Precipitation, humidity, and all types of
liquids or moisture can contain minerals that will corrode
electronic circuits. If your device does get wet, remove the
battery, and allow the device to dry completely before

■Small children
Your device and its accessories may contain small parts. Keep

■Operating environment
This device meets RF exposure guidelines when used either in the
normal use position against the ear or when positioned at least
1.5 centimetres (5/8 inches) away from the body. When a carry
case, belt clip, or holder is used for body-worn operation, it

■Potentially explosive environments
Switch off your device when in any area with a potentially

This mobile device meets guidelines for exposure to radio
waves.
Your mobile device is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is
designed not to exceed the limits for exposure to radio waves

include safety margins designed to assure the protection of all
