Model T50 SeriesPage 5 midlandusa.comBATTERY INSTALLATIONYour radio operates with either a NiMH battery pack or optional 3 AAAalkaline batteries. The belt clip should be removed (see below) toease installation or removal of the batteries. To install the batteries:1. With the back of the radio facing you, remove the belt clip (see diagram below) for easy access, then remove the Battery Cover bypressing down on the top center and sliding it down from the radio.2. Insert NiMH battery pack or 3 AAA batteries observing the polarityas shown. Installing the batteries incorrectly will prevent the unit from operating or may damage the unit.3. Return the Battery Cover by sliding it up on the radio. Replace thebelt clip, making sure it locks into place.BATTERYCOMPARTMENTBATTERYCOMPARTMENTCOVERPress here and push down to openBELT CLIP LOCK TAB BELT CLIP LATCH INSTALLING THE BELT CLIPTo install the BELT CLIP, slide the clip down into the slot on the backof the radio until the BELT CLIP LATCH clicks. To remove the BELTCLIP, pull the LOCK TAB away from the radio, then gently pull thebelt clip up toward the top of the radio.
Model T50 SeriesPage 6 midlandusa.comYour radios are equipped for using a rechargeable NiMH battery pack(BATT3R) which can be recharged by inserting one end of the USBCable into a USB power source, and the other end into the radio USBcharging jack, or with the optional desktop charger (as describedbelow). While charging, the Battery Meter will flash from 1 to 3 bars.The LCD display will show FULL when charging is complete. Formaximum battery life, Midland recommends charging the batterypack when the low battery icon comes on. Remove the radios fromthe charger when the charging is finished.To charge using the Desktop Charger:1. Place the BATT3R rechargeable battery packs in the radios.2. Connect one end of the USB Cable into a USB power source.3. Insert the other end of the USB Cable into the desktop charger USB jack.4. Place the radios into the desktop charger slot. While charging, theBattery Meter will flash from 1 to 3 bars, and stop when charging is finished. The LCD display will show FULL.In order to ensure that the battery pack is fully charged, it is recommended that the battery pack be charged with the radioturned OFF.1. Only use the Midland NiMH battery pack.2. Do not attempt to charge alkaline batteries or any batteries or battery packs other than the one indicated in the manual. This may cause leakage and damage to the radio.3. For long term storage of the radio, turn the radio OFF and remove the batteries from the radio.BATTERY LEVEL INDICATORYour radio has a BATTERY LEVEL METER that shows thebattery power level. The greater the number of bars visible, thestronger the battery level. When the battery level is low, the BatteryShell icon and “bt Lo” will flash in the display indicating yourbatteries should be replaced or recharged if using a rechargeablebattery pack.CHARGING THE BATTERIES !
Model T50 SeriesPage 7 midlandusa.comPOWER ON/OFF AND VOLUMEPress the POWER/MENU button for at least 3 seconds to turn theradio on/off. During Power On, the radio will beep 2 times withdifferent tones, the LCD will display several icons for 1 second andthen the LCD display will indicate the last channel selected. To increase/decrease the volume level, press the s\tbuttonsduring RX or STANDBY mode RESTORING YOUR RADIO TO THE ORIGINAL SETTINGTo reset your radio to the original (default) setting, turn on the radiowhile pressing and holding the sbutton. The LCD display will resetto standby mode on channel 1 with no Privacy Code. TRANSMITTING AND RECEIVING A CALLTo communicate, all radios in your group must be set to the samechannel and/or Privacy Code.1. For maximum clarity, hold the radio 2 to 3 inches from your mouth.2. Press and hold the PTT button and speak in a normal voice into the microphone. The TX icon will appear continuously on the LCD display while transmitting.3. To receive a call, release the PTT button. The RX icon will appearon the display when your radio is receiving a transmission.ABOUT RANGEYour radios are designed to give you maximum range under optimumconditions.OPERATING YOUR RADIO
Model T50 SeriesPage 8 midlandusa.comOptimum Conditions are: lOver waterlOpen rural areas without obstructionslFlat areas where you can see the other personTo ensure you get maximum range:lBe sure to use fresh or fully charged batteries - low batteries will cause low power conditions.lBe sure you are on a GMRS channel - FRS channels are restricted by the FCC to low power.lBe sure to set your radio to use Hi power.T50 SERIES QUICK REFERENCE CHARTMONITORPressing and holding the MONITOR button for 3 seconds will let youhear noise so you can adjust the volume level of the radio when notreceiving a signal. This could also be used to check any activity onyour current channel before transmitting. Press and hold the MONITOR button for 3 seconds again to get outof MONITOR mode.SCANYour radio can scan all 22 channels for activity. To enter, quickly pressthe SCAN button. Repeat the same procedure to exit. Your radio willrapidly scan each of the 22 channels and stop on any active channelfor 6 seconds before resuming scan.When you press the PTT button to transmit on an active channel, thescanning function will stop and remain on the active channel. Toresume scanning, quickly press the SCAN button.MENU Channel VOX1~22CTCSS Roger BeepOn/OffSilent OperationOn/OffoF/1/2/3WX Channel1~10WX AlertOn/OffPress and hold UP/WXbutton for 5 secondsoF~38

The TX icon will appear while transmitting a call alertand a tone can be heard on the speaker for confirmation.KEYPAD LOCKTo avoid accidentally changing the radio setting, press the LOCKbutton for 3 seconds. The icon will appear on the display. PTT andCALL will still be active. Repeat the same procedure to unlock thekeypad.CHANNEL SELECTION (GMRS/FRS BAND)Press the MENU button once, and then the s\tbuttons to selectone of the 22 GMRS/FRS channels. To confirm the selection, pressthe PTT button or press the MENU button again to move to the nextfeature setting.SETTING PRIVACY CODESYour radio has 38 Privacy Codes available. The selected PrivacyCode may be different for each channel. To select a Privacy Codefor the current channel press the MENU button twice, and then thes\t buttons to select one of the 38 CTCSS Codes. The PrivacyCode icon on the display will indicate CTCSS mode. To confirm theselection, press the PTT button or press the MENU button again tomove to the next feature setting.Note : Selecting a Privacy Code of "oF"will disable the Privacy feature. To communicate between two radios, all radios in your group must be set to the same channel and/or Privacy Code selections.!
Model T50 SeriesPage 10 midlandusa.comVOXYour radio has 3 VOX level settings: (oF/1~3).To set VOX, press the MENU button until the display shows “VOX”.On the right of the CHANNEL NUMBER display, an “oF” iconappears. Select “1” ~ “3” by pressing the s\tbuttons and push thePTT key, or press the MENU button again to move to the next featuresetting. VOX will be more sensitive on the lower setting than on thehigher setting.To turn VOX off, press the MENU button until the display shows“VOX”. On the right of the CHANNEL NUMBER display, a “1” ~ “3”icon appears. Select “oF” by pressing the s\tbuttons and push thePTT key, or press the MENU button again to move to the next featuresetting.ROGER BEEP (end of transmission) TONEWhen the PTT button is released, the radio will beep to confirm toother users that your transmission has finished. To set the ROGER BEEP tone, press the MENU button until thedisplay shows an “rb” icon. Select “on” or “oF” by pressing the s\tbuttons and push the PTT key, or press the MENU button to move tothe next feature setting. SILENT OPERATIONYour radio has a SILENT OPERATION mode. In this mode, all“beeps” and “tones” are disabled. To set SILENT OPERATION, press the MENU button until the displayshows a “bP” icon. Select “on” or "oF"by pressing the s\tbuttonsand push the PTT key or MENU button.NOAA WEATHER RADIOYour radio has a NOAA WEATHER RADIO function to enable theuser to receive weather reports from designated NOAA stations. To turn the NOAA WEATHER RADIO on, press and hold the WX/sbutton for 5 seconds while in GMRS mode. The radio will go to WXBand mode.

While on WXBand mode press the s\tbuttons to select one of the 10 NOAAWEATHER (WX) BAND channels. To confirm, press the PTT button or press the MENU button to moveto the next feature setting.To turn the NOAA WEATHER RADIO off, press the PTT button. Thecurrent GMRS/FRS radio setting will be displayed and the icon willgo off.NOAA WEATHER ALERTYour radio has a NOAA WEATHER ALERT function, to enable youto automatically receive weather alerts from designated NOAAstations. To turn the NOAA WEATHER (WX) ALERT on during normal NOAAWEATHER RADIO mode, press the MENU button twice while inNOAA WEATHER RADIO mode. The display shows "AL,"while onthe right an "oF" icon appears. Select "on" by pressing the s\tbuttons. To confirm, press the PTT button or press MENU. The radiowill return to WX BAND and the icon will continue blinking. If theradio receives a WX ALERT signal from a designated NOAA stationwhile on GMRS/FRS Radio mode, the radio will beep for 20 secondswhile the display will automatically go to WX BAND. To turn the NOAA WEATHER (WX) ALERT off, press the MENUbutton twice while in WX Band. The display shows "AL,"while on theright an "on" icon appears. Select "oF" by pressing the s\tbuttons. To confirm, press the PTT button or press MENU.EXTERNAL SPEAKER/MICROPHONE JACK Your radio can be used with an optional external speaker/microphone or headset, freeing your hands for other tasks. To use an optional speaker/microphone or headset:lInsert the plug(s) into the SPK/MIC jacks.lPlace the earbud into your ear, and adjust the mic into your desired position.

Radio is not respondingto button presses - Make sure key lock is not on (See Keypad Lock, Page 9). - Radio might need to be reset. Turn radio off then on.Display is dim - Recharge or replace batteries.Charger not functioning - Contacts on the bottom of the radio may require cleaning. - Ensure the outlet where the charger is plugged in is functioning properly.- Check that the battery pack is installed in the radio properly.USE AND CARE1. Use a soft damp cloth to clean the radio.2. Do not use alcohol or cleaning solutions to clean the radio.3. Do not immerse the radio in water.4. Dry the radio with a dry lint-free cloth should it get wet.5. Turn off the radio and remove the batteries during long-term storage.If you have a problem which you believe requiresservice, please call first and speak with a servicetechnician at 816-241-8500.
