General information
Dear customer,
By purchasing the BMW Head‐Up Screen you have acquired a product that supports driving
safety and comfort by indicating important vehicle and navigation information within your
visible range.
The screen is installed on the instrument panel and positioned at the same height as the
steering wheel. All information is therefore available within the driver’s direct field of vision.
Drivers no longer need to take their eyes off the road and have all relevant information on
display at all times.
Vehicle data such as speed, cruise control, frost warning, sea level, power, torque and a fuel
reminder from a remaining range of 50 km are displayed.
The “Garmin HUD“ app for your iOS or Android smartphone, which is included in the scope
of delivery, provides fully functional navigation with turn‐by‐turn (arrow display) instructions
and corresponding additional information such as the calculated time of arrival, speed limits
and current traffic information (congestions).
BMW recommends that you only use parts and accessory products that have been tested
and approved by BMW in terms of their safety, function and suitability. If you have any
questions while using your BMW Head‐Up Screen, contact your local BMW centre. Read
these operating instructions carefully before using your BMW Head‐Up Screen.
Safety instructions and important information
For your own safety, please read the safety instructions carefully to avoid causing injury to
yourself and/or other road users. Applicable safety regulations always take precedence here.
Using the smartphone
Please do not operate your smartphone while driving.
To avoid being distracted during the journey, please connect the Head‐Up Screen to the
smartphone before starting the engine or departure. This also applies when entering your
destination.
For safety reasons, your smartphone does not have an Internet connection while connected
to the Head‐Up Screen. Only the live navigation services (traffic news, etc.) are connected to
the Internet. Please note that additional roaming charges may be incurred when travelling
abroad if you have activated the data roaming function in your smartphone.
To access the Internet services of your smartphone with other applications, please switch off
the Head‐Up Screen via the vehicle ignition, fold down the display or terminate the WLAN
connection in your smartphone with the Head‐Up Screen.
Operating temperature
If the Head‐Up Screen should exceed the permissible operating temperature, your Head‐Up
Screen will only be activated when the ignition is switched on and when the permitted
interior temperature has been reached. This may possibly take several minutes.
Display brightness
The brightness of the Head‐Up Screen automatically adapts to the brightness of the
instrument panel lighting of your vehicle. It can, however, still be manually adapted via the
instrument panel light control in the vehicle or via the settings in the “Head‐Up Screen app”.
Note: Changes of the brightness of the Head‐Up Screen via the instrument panel light
control only work when parking lights or low beam headlights are switched on.
For information regarding the regulation of the instrument panel lighting, please refer to the
instructions in your BMW vehicle manual.
Please make sure that the display is not too bright when driving in the dark, so that your
vision is not impaired.
Cleaning / care
We recommend that you use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning the Head‐Up Screen. A suitable
microfiber cloth is included in the scope of delivery.
Please do not use any other cleaning agents, as they may cause damage to the product. In
case of heavier soiling, it is advisable to moisten the cloth with a little water.

Installation / Putting into operation
The vehicle data is automatically displayed when the ignition is switched on. All other data is
displayed as soon as a smartphone is connected or navigation is started.
The following system prerequisites are necessary in order to use the smartphone functions:
Android: from Android 4.0 and higher (Android 2.2 with restrictions)
iOS: devices from iPhone 4 with iOS 6 and higher
Install the free BMW “Head‐Up Screen app” on your smartphone. It can be found in the
respective app store: iTunes (iOS) or Google Playstore (Android).
Also install the navigation app “Garmin HUD” and load the desired map material onto your
smartphone. For this, please follow the installation instructions for the app.
As the “Garmin HUD” application contains large quantities of data, we recommend that you
only load the data via a WLAN connection.
Both apps are free of charge and included in the scope of delivery.
To activate the “Garmin HUD” app, please subsequently connect yourself to your Head‐Up
Screen via WLAN. Your navigation application is now activated for 30 days and always
automatically extends itself by a further 30 days when you connect to the Head‐Up Screen.
Therefore, you can also use the navigation independently of your Head‐Up Screen. You may
also install the application on several smartphones to enable other users of the vehicle to
also use the Head‐Up Screen. This does not entail further costs for any user.
Once the WLAN in your smartphone has been activated and the “Garmin HUD” app has been
started, your smartphone automatically connects to the Head‐Up Screen and displays
relevant information on your Head‐Up Screen, even without active navigation (e. g. speed
limit).
You can activate and deactivate the warning of hazardous areas in the “Garmin HUD” app.
Prior to use, obtain information about the legal regulations in your place of destination.
Connecting a smartphone to the Head‐Up Screen
After the successful installation of the “Head‐Up Screen app” and the “Garmin HUD” app,
you must connect your smartphone to the Head‐Up Screen (WLAN).
Switch on the ignition of your vehicle and open the display of the Head‐Up Screen.
Under the “WLAN” settings in your smartphone, search for the WLAN Access Point with the
SSID “Head‐Up Screen” and connect yourself.
The standard password is: “1234567890”
Please note that there must always be a WLAN connection to the Head‐Up Screen for the
use of the navigation function. The “Garmin HUD” app must be started.
Note:
To make sure that the connection between the Head‐Up Screen and your smartphone is not
disconnected when your smartphone switches to the energy‐saving mode or when you
switch off the screen, you must adjust the energy‐saving setting in your smartphone so that
GPS and WLAN remain active in the energy‐saving mode. For this, please read the operating
instructions for your smartphone. If, however, your smartphone terminates the connection
when the battery charge is low, please connect your smartphone to the power supply so
that it can be charged. This ensures a reliable WLAN connection.
The WLAN connection is interrupted each time you turn off the ignition of your vehicle (e.g.
when stopping for fuel). When you restart your engine it may be necessary to briefly activate
your smartphone screen to re‐establish the WLAN connection.
Important:
We recommend that you continuously charge the smartphone during navigation.
If, with the navigation function active, your Head‐Up Screen does not display any navigation
instructions (turn‐by‐turn instructions), but only the calculated time of arrival and distance
from destination, this may be due to the fact that your smartphone currently has no valid
GPS signal for position tracking or that you are not within the digitalised road network. In the
event of an invalid or weak GPS signal, please position your smartphone in a place inside the
vehicle with a better and, if possible, clear view of the sky.
Note: Vehicle window glass with special coating may impair the reception quality of the GPS
signal.
Settings
Various settings can be changed using the “Head‐Up Screen app” (see illustration).
Adaptation of the speed
Close coordination of the speed display to the vehicle.
Depending on the vehicle type it may be necessary to adapt the
digital display of the Head‐Up Screen to the behaviour of the
analogue pointer display of the speedometer.
❷ Adaptation of screen brightness
In “Auto” mode, your Head‐Up Screen adapts to the settings of
the instrument panel lighting of the vehicle. In addition, the
brightness can be individually adapted here. If you remove the
check mark at “Auto”, the display can be controlled entirely
independently of the vehicle. Pay attention that your are not
dazzled in the dark.
