Your Personal Meter picksup TV and radio stationcodes wherever you go.2How does it work?Your Personal MeterYour Personal Meter is just for you. Your name will appear when youput your Personal Meter into its Recharger. Please make sure you arethe only one using your Personal Meter.Your Personal Meter picks up what you watch on TV and listen to onthe radio. It automatically identifies the radio station or TV program by picking upspecial “encoded” signals sent by TV and radio stations. It can also pick up encodedsignals that are played over the Internet or at places such as stores, amusement parks, and movie theaters that participate with us in this research. These signals are silent tothe human ear. However, if you can hear sound from your TV or radio or other encodedsource, the Personal Meter will pick up the signal. Your Personal Meter doesn’t “hear”or record your conversations or any other sounds.Your Personal Meter has a green light on the side to show you the Meter is working. The green light is attached to a special sensor that knows if you are carrying the Meterwith you. All you have to do is wear your Personal Meter to keep the green light on. Yousimply wear your Personal Meter and it receives station signals wherever you are. It’s important that you always wear your Personal Meter so it will report all your TVviewing and radio listening. We ask that you wear it from the time you first wake up andduring all your daily activities—at home, in the car, or at work.
3Your RechargerYour Recharger collects your TV viewing and radiolistening information as well as recharges the PersonalMeter battery. At the end of each day, you place thePersonal Meter into the Recharger so all your TVviewing and radio listening for that day will be included. To make it easy, we ask you to place the Recharger inyour bedroom where you can easily see it when youfirst wake up.The Recharger also displays special messages to youwhenever you place the Personal Meter back into the unit. It will tell you how manypoints you have earned for wearing your Meter for the current and previous days. It willalso tell you what your point total is for the current week and what it was for theprevious week. There are two buttons located near the display on the front of your Recharger. They are used only fortesting by our technicians and will do nothing when pushed. The Household CollectorThe Collector is plugged into an electrical outlet and into your telephone line. Itcollects viewing and listening data from each Recharger by communicating withthese units through the electrical wiring in your home. It also transmits a silentsignal that can be detected by your Personal Meter when it is within your house. This allows us to separate your media use at home from your media use in other places. The Collector then sends your household’sinformation to our main computer once each dayby making a very short call, lasting just acouple minutes very early in the morning, usually between 4AM and 6AM. We can thencombine your information with informationfrom other households in your area to producethe TV and radio ratings. This call will not affect your phone service. You can use the telephone whenever youwant. There is no additional cost to your phone bill. When connected properly, your Collector will show a solid green light on the front. If the green lightis flashing or out, please refer to the troubleshooting section of this guide for instructions.Occasionally an orange light may come on and flash. This is normal.
4How to keep your Meter with youThree simple rules1. Remove your Personal Meter from its Recharger as soonas you wake up.2. Wear your Personal Meter wherever you go and make sureits green light stays on.3. At the end of the day, just before you go to sleep, place your Personal Meter into itsRecharger to recharge while you are sleeping.Wear it wherever you goPlease remember to wear your Personal Meter everywhereyou go so all your TV viewing and radio listening willbe included. To accurately pick up all of your TV and radio use, your Personal Meter must be on you throughout yourday, morning, noon and night. When you leave the house, keep your Personal Meterwith you wherever you go—in the car, at work, even ona trip to the store. You may think that you won’t beviewing anything on TV or listening to radio, but you’ll besurprised at how many occasions you will find yourselfwatching or listening to a program. You’ll beprepared if you always wear your PersonalMeter. When you wear your Personal Meter, the greenlight stays on. If you put the Personal Meterdown, it will turn off after a short while if youdon’t move it. First, it begins blinking after youput it down to let you know it needs attention. Then, if you do not pick up your Personal Meter or at least move it to let it know you arethere, the green light turns off. Your Personal Meter light will come back on when youwear it or pick it up.
5Ways to wear your Personal MeterYou can wear your Personal Meter just about any wayyou like. We suggest:• clipping it to your belt or another piece of clothing;• carrying it in your shirt, pants or skirt pocket(please keep the green-light end near your pocketopening);• clipping it to your purse while you are carrying it(remember to take your Meter off your purse when it’s not withyou); or• using one of the accessories provided to help make iteasier to wear your Meter. You will probably think of other ways to wear yourPersonal Meter that work best for you.Keep your PersonalMeter with you.Keep the green light on.
