No Wires Needed User manual Swallow 1100 PC Card Page 11 of 443 Wireless LAN basicsWireless LAN (Local Area Networks) systems offer agreat number of advantages over a traditional, wiredsystem. Wireless LANs are more flexible, easier to setupand manage and often more cost effective than theirwired equivalence.Using radio frequency (RF) technology, WLANs transmitand receive data over the air, minimizing the need forwired connections. Thus, WLANs combine dataconnectivity with user mobility, and, through simplifiedconfiguration, enable movable LANs.With wireless LANs, users can access shared informationwithout looking for a place to plug in and networkmanagers can set up or augment networks withoutinstalling or moving wires. Wireless LANs offer thefollowing productivity, convenience and cost advantagesover traditional wired networks:• Mobility - Wireless LAN systems can provide LANusers with access to real-time informationanywhere in their organization. This mobilitysupports productivity and service opportunities notpossible with wired networks. • Installation Speed and Simplicity - Installing awireless LAN system can be fast and easy and caneliminate the need to pull cable through walls andceilings.
No Wires NeededPage 12 of 44 Swallow 1100 PC Card User manual • Installation Flexibility - Wireless technology allowsthe network to go where wires cannot go. • Reduced Cost-of-Ownership - While the initialinvestment required for wireless LAN hardwaremight be higher than the cost of wired LANhardware, overall installation expenses and life-cycle costs will be significantly lower. Long-termcost benefits are greatest in dynamic environmentsrequiring frequent moves, adds, and changes. • Scalability - Wireless LAN systems can beconfigured in a variety of topologies to meet theneeds of specific applications and installations.Configurations are easily changed and range frompeer-to-peer networks suitable for a small numberof users to full infrastructure networks of thousandsof users that allows roaming over a broad area.
