Important Note: Whichever location you choose, ensure the room location switch on the amplifier plate located on the bottom of loudspeaker is set to the appropriate position: “floor,” “table”or “shelf.” The only wire that plugs into the F/X Wireless Surround is the power cord, which you plug into an AC outlet. NOTE: USE ONLY ONE OF THESE OPTIONS. NEVER COMBINE HOOKUP OPTIONS. 5.1 AND 7.1 CHANNEL CONNECTION OPTIONS SETTING UP YOUR F/X WIRELESS SURROUND Depending on your home theater receiver/processor, you will either be using a 5.1 or 7.1 channel hookup. If you have a 5.1 receiver, connect the left and right Surround channels to your F/X Wireless Surround. If you are using a 7.1 channel receiver connect both the left and right Surround Back, and the left and right Surround channels. F/X Wireless Surround Position setting: Your F/X Wireless Surround can provide a credible multi-channel surround experience from a range of placement locations within the media space but should optimally be placed behind the seating area. Choose FLOOR, TABLE (ear height of +/- 2 feet) or SHELF (2 feet or more above ear height) in accordance with the vertical placement of the loudspeaker cabinet. OPTION #1 Speaker Level Connections surr. back • Connect the transmitter’s left and right Surround and Surround Back inputs directly to the corresponding left and right Surround and Surround Back outputs on your receiver/processor front surround Receiver/Processor • Adjust your receiver’s speaker configurations as follows: Surrounds and Surround Back = SMALL TELEVISION surr. back surr. back line level • Adjust your receiver’s speaker configurations as follows: Surrounds and Surround back = SMALL Gain: For optimal performance, channel level settings on Dolby Digital receivers/surround-sound processors for the (lateral) Surround and Surround Back channels should match each other. 1. Surround Channel gain should be set so that the sound level in the seating area matches or slightly exceeds the sound levels of the front channels. 2. Surround Back should be set to match the gain setting so determined for the Surround Channels. F/X WIRELESS SURROUND Example: If +3dB is the appropriate channel level to achieve Surround Channel sound levels that match the Front channels, then Surround Back channel level should also be set to +3dB. sub Receiver/Processor Transmitter surr. back surround speaker level Follow The Instructions Below To Set Up Your F/X Wireless Surround Manually. surround surround speaker level • Using the supplied RCA cables, connect the left and right Surround and Surround Back outputs on your receiver to the corresponding left and right Surround and Surround Back inputs on the transmitter. Due to the special nature of its complex radiation pattern, the top surface of the loudspeaker cabinet should be unobstructed and facing towards the ceiling. The long axis of the cabinet should be parallel to the long dimension of your home theater’s video screen and centered behind the listening area Transmitter OPTION #2 Line Level Connections IMPORTANT NOTE: Manual vs. Automated Loudspeaker Setup Many new home theater receivers and preamp/processors feature automated setup systems such as Audyssey® MultEQ. Due to the special nature of the F/X Wireless Surround’s operating principles, we strongly recommend not using an automated speaker calibration system for Surround and Surround Back channel loudspeakers. For the F/X Wireless Surround, you need to determine the actual distance from the listening area to the loudspeaker cabinet and approximate room dimensions. Loudspeaker does not power on. CENTER CHANNEL SUB RIGHT CHANNEL LEFT CHANNEL For symmetrical rooms, whereby the distance between the loudspeaker cabinet and major reflecting surfaces (particularly side walls) are approximately equal, the distance setting for the Surround channels may be computed as follows: No sound from loudspeaker. F/X WIRELESS SURROUND The loudspeaker’s sound is intermittent, sounds weak or is distorted. Figure B LEFT CHANNEL • Distance = actual distance of speaker behind the listening area and approximate width of the listening area CENTER CHANNEL SUB RIGHT CHANNEL • The distance setting for Surround Back channels should simply match the actual distance of the loudspeaker from the listening area. F/X WIRELESS SURROUND Example: The F/X Wireless Surround is placed 4 feet behind the seating area in a 20-foot wide room. Set the Surround Right and Surround Left distance to 40ms (milliseconds) TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND SERVICE Symmetrical Room: Surround Right and Surround Left Speaker distance (Figure A) Speaker Time Delay In Milliseconds Distance of speaker behind listening area (ft) Room Width (ft) 10 15 10 30 30 31 32 33 34 38 12 32 32 33 33 34 36 39 15 35 35 36 36 37 38 41 20 40 40 40 41 42 42 45 25 45 45 45 46 46 47 49 For Non-Symmetrical Arrangements (Figure B) To determine distance settings in an assymetrical room, subtract the distance of the loudspeaker from the closest wall (B) from the farthest (A), and then divide that number by two. EX: (A-B) 10 – Ensure the loudspeaker is plugged into a live wall outlet. – Ensure the rear panel power switch is in the “On” position. – Push the SCAN button to reset the “communications” link between the transmitter and the loudspeaker. – Turn up the volume control of the individual channels through your receiver. – Make sure the transmitter is plugged into a live wall outlet – Turn off and unplug the transmitter and the loudspeaker. Then turn on the loudspeaker and plug in the transmitter. – Push the SCAN button on the transmitter and loudspeaker sequentially to reset the “communications” link between the transmitter and the loudspeaker. – The loudspeaker could be too far away from the transmitter to receive a sufficiently strong signal. Try moving it closer. Polk Audio Customer Service 800-377-7655 (Outside USA & Canada: 410-358-3600) If, after following these hookup directions, you experience difficulty, please double-check all wire connections. Specifications can be found on the F/X Wireless Surround web pages. Go to www.polkaudio.com. A Note Regarding Wireless Performance: Like all wireless devices, your F/X Wireless Surround may be susceptible to RF interference from such sources as microwave ovens, WiFi computer systems, video game systems, cordless telephones, blue tooth systems, baby monitors and other devices. In particular, any devices operating in the 2.4GHz band may cause intermittent wireless connections between the F/X Wireless Surround. It is also possible that your F/X Wireless Surround may affect other wireless systems. For the most part, you can avoid wireless performance problems by physically separating these devices from your F/X Wireless Surround . Maintaining a distance of several feet or more between your F/X Wireless Surround speaker and any wireless device should prevent any mutual interference effects. If you do notice any subwoofer signal dropouts take care to identify the root cause (most commonly having other wireless devices too close) and resolve accordingly. Any interference effects from a microwave oven will cease once the oven stops operating and may be resolved on a long-term basis by increasing the physical distance between your F/X Wireless Surround and the microwave oven.
