3GET FOUND WITH FAST FINDINTRODUCTIONCongratulations on purchasing the FastFind Personal Location Beacon(PLB). When carrying a FastFind you enjoy the reassurance of a last resortsafeguard against any life threatening incidents that may occur anywhere inthe world. If you find yourself in a remote area without any other form ofemergency communication, on land or at sea, your FastFind can call for help.Fast Find will transmit a unique emergency identifier to the Cospas Sarsat satellitesystem which can determine your location anywhere on the earth’s surface. In mostcases the emergency alert is received within 5 minutes of activation but dependingon satellite coverage at the time this can sometimes extend to 45 minutes. When the emergency alert message is received at a Rescue Co-ordination Centre(RCC) it is cross referenced using the unique identifier (often called Hex ID) againstyour registration details. Detail of the alert is forwarded to the appropriate localSearch And Rescue (SAR) teams. Keeping your registration details up to date iscritical to ensuring a quick SAR response. Fast Find has a secondary ‘homing’ transmitter which allows SAR teams to directionfind or ‘home’ on it once they arrive on scene. Fast Find has a storage life of 5 years andonce activated will continue to transmit emergency alerts for a minimum of 24 hours. For further information visit Cospas Sarsat on line at www.cospas-sarsat.org andwww.mcmurdo.co.uk. The ‘frequently asked questions’ section is a good place to start. 32223 fstfnd manual 120x120 28/1/09 12:09 Page 4
GPS VERSION FastFind 210 has a built-in Global PositioningSystem (GPS) receiver to potentially reducethe time for SAR teams to arrive on scene. Ifthe sky view is obscured by tree canopy or asteep-sided canyon, the GPS may take longer,or possibly fail to obtain a position fix. In thiscase the distress alert may be transmittedwithout GPS location information. RADIO LICENSEU.S. users are not required to hold a radiolicense for a PLB. Other nationaladministrations may require the PLB user tobe licensed, for further advice check withyour dealer or contact your nationalcommunications licensing authority.USER REGISTRATION The PLB’s unique identifier must be registeredwith the national authority indicated in thewhite area on the rear of the PLB. Completethe user registration form and return it to theaddress indicated on the form. Some nationalauthorities allow online registration, a goodstarting place is the online emergencybeacon registration database called IBRD atwww.406registration.com. IBRD will notaccept all registrations and where appropriateyou will be re-directed to your nationalauthority. Some countries (including USA andUK) will send the registered user a DECALlabel which you are obliged to fit to the rearof the PLB as ‘proof of registration’. DE-ACTIVATION AFTER USETo turn off the FastFind, press and hold theTEST button for several seconds until theindicator light stops flashing. We recommend the antenna is re-woundunder the plastic peg. If possible, the yellowantenna cover shouldbe pushed back inplace and temporarilytaped over, to avoidaccidentally pressingof the ON button. ImportantAs soon as possible the PLB should bereturned to a service agent, who will fit a newantenna cover and check the batterycondition. If the PLB was active for more thana few hours we recommend fitting a freshbattery to ensure the full 24 hour operationallife is still available.SELF TEST Self-test verifies operation of the PLB bychecking all key features including the batteryand alert transmitters.TEST buttonPush and hold theSELF TEST button fora minimum of 2seconds, theindicator light will flash once to indicate thestart of the self test sequence. After a few seconds, a good self-test willresult in the indicator light flashing a numberof times in quick succession depending onbattery usage;fresh battery self test passminimum usage self test passmedium usage self test passNO FLASH self test fail PLB requires serviceThe PLB will switch off automatically whenthe self-test has completedImportant Each self-test draws small amounts of energyfrom the battery pack. Unnecessary testing ofthe PLB will reduce the run time of the PLB inan emergency. On average, the PLB shouldonly be self tested 12 times per year, or a totalof 60 times during the 5 year battery lifetime. 9GET FOUND WITH FAST FIND32223 fstfnd manual 120x120 28/1/09 12:09 Page 10
GPS POSITION ACQUISITION TESTWhen testing the GPS, take the PLB outsideinto an open space with a clear view of thesurrounding sky.Self testing of the in-built GPS is restricted toa maximum of 10 tests throughout the 5 yearstorage life of the battery. Once all the testshave been used up, attempting further testswill cause the indicator light to flash 4 timesin quick succession and the PLB to power off.The GPS self-test feature can only beaccessed after first completing a standardPLB self-test routine;Push and hold the TEST button for a minimumof 2 seconds, the indicator light will flashonce to indicate the start of the self testsequence. Release the TEST button. After a few seconds the standard self-testroutine will complete and should result in theindicator light flashing a number of times inquick succession depending on the pastbattery usage.Immediately after the indicator light stopsflashing, hold down the TEST button foraround 30 seconds. The GPS test routinestarts when the indicator light begins toflash, now release the TEST button. The lightwill continue to flash slowly for up to 5minutes; you should continue to watch thePLB throughout this period.A successful GPS test is signalled by theindicator light flashing a number of longerflashes in quick succession.Important To preserve battery life, GPS testing isrestricted to a maximum of 10 teststhroughout the 5 year battery life. Once usedup, further GPS tests are prohibited. CHOOSING THE BEST LOCATIONThe Fast Find works best under anunobstructed view of the sky. This ensuresthe emergency alert message reaches thesatellite system and gives the GPS receiver(Fast Find 210) the best signals to work with.If it’s not possible to pick a location with anunobstructed view of the sky, then try tomaximize the amount of sky available.Tree canopy degrades performance. Find aclearing with as much sky view as possible. Ravines, canyons, caves and overhangsshould be avoided if at all possible.GPS self test pass10 – 4 GPS tests remainingGPS self test pass3 – 1 GPS tests remainingGPS self test passNo GPS tests remaining32223 fstfnd manual 120x120 28/1/09 12:09 Page 11
Stay put - Rescue teams expect you to remainstationary. Trying to walk for help is generallynot advised and will probably slow down therescue effort. On footIf you must walk for help, ensure the Fast Findantenna remains vertical.AircraftA PLB is often used as an additional carry-offsafety device. The PLB should NOT beactivated aboard an aircraft. The signal willbe blocked by metalwork and the PLB may bedamaged by any impact. Activate the PLBafter landing, away from the aircraft, as it maycause shadowing.VehiclesThe PLB will not work well inside a vehicledue to metalwork shadowing. Exit thevehicle, activate the PLB, and place it on theroof, the hood, or just on the ground awayfrom the vehicle.LandFind the best sky view, then place the PLB on flat ground. Keep the antenna pointingtowards the sky and ensure wind doesn’tknock the PLB over. Do NOT allow theantenna to sit in a puddle of water.Aboard shipPlace the PLB flat on the deck, choosing aposition with the best sky view.LiferaftTry to keep the PLB flat and try to elevate thePLB to avoid bodies blocking the signal.Consider holding the PLB outside the canopy. But first attach a lanyard between the PLBand your clothing to avoid loss of the PLB.LifejacketAttach a lanyard cord between the PLB andclothing to avoid loss of the PLB. Hold the PLBflat on top of the life vest and try to keep itabove any wave wash. Keep the antennavertical. Avoid holding the antenna, orblocking the GPS zone with your hand.False alertsIf the PLB has been accidentally activated, orif rescue has been effected before arrival ofthe rescue services:• Switch off the PLB and notify theappropriate rescue services or authoritiesat the earliest possible time.• Contact the rescue services, coastguard, orpolice by radio or telephone to advise themof the false alert.
