–5–Installation■Installing the backup battery in the base unitA rechargeable Ni-Cd battery works as emergency power during a powerfailure. The fully charged backup battery provides the base unit with 20minutes operation. The battery is charged in the base unit while the ACadaptor is connected. It takes 10 hours to charge fully.Install the backup battery in the battery compartment, and close the cradlecover.•The battery cannot be overcharged.■ChargerAttention:The product you have purchased is powered by a nickelcadmium battery which is recyclable. At the end of its useful life, under various state and local laws, itis illegal to dispose of this battery into your municipal wastestream. –10–Handset battery charge■RechargeRecharge the battery when:–" " flashes on the display, or– the handset beeps every minute while it is in use.•Clean the charge contacts of the handset and charger with a soft drycloth once a month. Clean more often if the unit is subject to grease,dust or high humidity. If not, the battery may not charge properly.•If the battery is fully charged, you do not have to place the handset on thecharger until " " flashes. This will maximize the battery life.•The battery cannot be overcharged.To power the cordless handset, charge the battery.Place the handset on the charger for about 8 hours before initial use.•The CHARGE indicator lights.
–11–Making/Answering calls with the base unit■To make a callWhen you lift the handset to make a call, the unit will automatically select afree line.Using the digital duplex speakerphone:1 Press DIGITAL SP-PHONE.•The indicator and the selected line indicator light.2 Dial a telephone number.3 Talk into the MIC (microphone).4 To hang up, press DIGITAL SP-PHONE.•The indicator lights go out.•In step 1, you may select a line manually by pressing the line button insteadof DIGITAL SP-PHONE.•To redial the last number: Lift the handset or press DIGITAL SP-PHONE,then press REDIAL.•To adjust the handset volume (4 levels)/speaker volume (8 levels):To increase, press  . –13–Caller ID ServiceThis unit is compatible with a Caller ID service offered by your telephonecompany. After subscribing to a Caller ID service, the calling party’s information will beshown on the base unit and cordless handset displays after the first ring. The base unit can record information of up to 50 different callers in the callerlist. Each cordless handset can record information of up to 30 different callersin the caller list. The Caller List information is sorted from the most recent tothe oldest call. When the base unit receives the 51st call or the handsetreceives the 31st call, the oldest call is deleted.If your unit is connected to a PBX system which does not support Caller IDservices, you cannot access those services. Please consult your equipmentsupplier.Voice Mail SystemThe Voice Mail System is a voice message receiving and delivery systemwhich allows callers to leave messages in the mailboxes. The unit accommodates one general delivery mailbox and a maximum of 8personal mailboxes for the cordless handsets. The Voice Mail System fully works with the automated attendant system. Thissystem routes incoming calls to the specified mailbox. If a caller did notspecify the mailbox, the call is routed to the general delivery mailbox.If you select the answering system, all calls are routed to the general deliverymailbox. The base unit and cordless handset users can use the Voice Mail Systemfeatures by accessing their mailboxes. Each cordless handset user can only access to his/her own mailbox. Thegeneral delivery mailbox is managed by the base unit user. However, anycordless handset users can access to this mailbox.The following features are accessible:—listening to the recorded messages—transferring the mailbox messages to the destination mailboxes—delivering their own messages to the destination mailboxes
–14–Automated Attendant SystemYour can set this system to your desired lines to suit your needs.The automated attendant answers incoming calls and routes the callers to thebase unit or the desired cordless handset.■ To select the automated attendant systemYou can record up to 4 greeting messages (up to 2 minutes each), and assignone of them to the line.•All messages (greeting, incoming, etc.) are stored in digital memory. Thetotal recording time is about 50 minutes. We recommend you record abrief greeting message in order to leave more time in memory.If you do not record a greeting message, the pre-recorded greeting messagecan be selected.To select the pre-recorded message:1 Press the desired line’s ANSWER ON button.2 Press FUNCTION within 10 seconds.3 Press or to select “Auto attendant”, and press H.4 Press H.•The pre-recorded message is played.•The line’s auto attendant icon will be displayed.To record your greeting message:1 Press the desired line’s ANSWER ON button.2 Press FUNCTION within 10 seconds.3 Press or to select “Auto attendant”, and press H.4 Press to select “Greeting1”.5 Press H.6 Press H.•“Record greeting at the tone” is heard.7 Talk clearly, about 8 inches (20 cm) away from the MIC (microphone).8 Press H.•The recorded message is played.•The line’s auto attendant icon will be displayed.
