Training Guide for Adults

Are you a Rising Star?
Funding for anyone working in engineering, food manufacturing and hospitality is available for a limited
time as part of the Rising Stars project – delivered through the ESF Widening Participation through Skills
Project.
The funding from the European Social Fund (ESF) is part of the 2014-2020 European Structural and
Investment Funds Growth Programme in England, which enables you to develop new skills and knowledge
to improve your performance.
We offer a range of programmes – highlighted in this guide by the Rising Stars icon:
• Fully-funded workshops
• One-to-one support and guidance
• Opportunity to progress onto part-funded, degree-level short courses (20 credits)
The project also focuses on delivering Lean and Project Management modules, along with the Institute of
Leadership and Management (ILM) qualifications in Communication and Coaching.

If you see this symbol next to a
course listed in the brochure, Rising Star ESF
funding may be available subject to criteria.

Fully Funded Training

Many courses in reading, writing and basic maths are free, and you may not have to pay for
tuition if you’re under 24 and studying for your first qualification equivalent to GCSE or A level.
Also in many cases your training programme could be free if it is your first level 3 course and
you are aged under 24. Please call our team to find out if you are eligible.

Advanced Learning Loans

Advanced Learning Loans give you access to financial support for tuition costs, similar to that
which is available in higher education. This means rather than having to pay for your course
upfront, you have the option of accessing a loan, from the Student Loans Company, that you
will only start to repay once you have left the course and are earning over £21,000 per year.
The Advanced Learning Loans are for anyone who:
• Is aged 19 and above at the start of the course
• Is studying an eligible programme from Level 3 to Level 6
• Is a resident in the UK
The loan is available irrespective of your current employment status
and the loan will not be means tested or subject to any credit checks.
If you’ve found a course you wish to apply for and want to talk to an advisor about funding
options, what’s available and how to apply, call our Enquiries Team on 0330 123 2523.
Please see www.gov.uk for full terms and conditions.

Training Guide for Adults

Apprenticeships are for adults too…
Apprenticeships help to improve the quality and range
of opportunities available to you in your chosen career;
they are a flexible way of upskilling without sacrificing
your salary.

The only difference between someone over 19 starting
an apprenticeship and that of a school leaver is in how
much your employer would need to contribute to
funding your training and also how much you get paid.

Many think they are just for school leavers and young
people; but in fact there is no upper age limit if you want
to start an apprenticeship. Last year saw the highest
ever level over over 25s starting an apprenticeship in a
decade.

If you are already with an employer who is willing to
support you on an apprenticeship training programme
your terms and conditions of employment are likely to
remain the same, with a view that they would increase
your salary when you achieved the apprenticeship and
became better skilled (although this is not guaranteed).
If you are starting employment with a business as an
apprentice, you would initially only be employed for the
term of the apprenticeship and be entitled to the
national minimum wage or above.

If you’re over 16, living
in England and not in
full-time education then
you’re eligible to become
an apprentice.

0330 123 2523 enquiries@cornwall.ac.uk www.cornwall.ac.uk

Many people looking to change their career or
profession choose an apprenticeship route as a first
step into a new sector.
There are also a growing number of higher
apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships, for
anyone looking to progress to a university education
while still working and earning; without incurring a
great amount of student debt.
