3 Get started
Always follow the instructions in this chapter in
sequence.
Connect power
Caution
Risk of product damage! Make sure that the power
supply voltage matches the voltage printed on the
bottom of this product.
Risk of electric shock! When you unplug the AC power
adaptor, always pull the plug from the socket. Never
pull the cord.
Connect the AC power adaptor between
 the DC IN socket at the back of this
product, and
 the power supply.
Turn on
Press POWER.
» The product switches to the last
selected source.
Switch to standby mode
Press POWER again to switch the product to
standby mode.
» The clock (if set) is displayed.
DC IN
Select a source
Press SOURCE/SET repeatedly to select a
source: FM preset, FM, Bluetooth, or AUX in.
Set time
1 Press and hold SOURCE/SET for two
seconds.
» [24H] or [12H] begins to blink.
2 Press - TUNE/TIME or TUNE/TIME+ to
select [24H] or[12H] for 12 or 24 hour
format.
3 Press SOURCE/SET
» The hour and minute digits begin to
blink.
4 Press - TUNE/TIME or TUNE/TIME+
repeatedly to set the hour.
5 Press SOURCE/SET
» Minute digits begin to blink.
6 Press - TUNE/TIME or TUNE/TIME+
repeatedly to set the minute.
7 Press SOURCE/SET
» The set time is displayed.

4 On your Bluetooth device, follow the on-
screen instructions to complete the pairing
and connection.
Disconnect a device
On your device, disable the Bluetooth
connection with this product.
Note
Before connecting another Bluetooth device, disconnect

Reconnect a device
 For a paired Bluetooth device on which
the automatic reconnection is enabled,
this product reconnects with it once it is
detected.
 For a paired Bluetooth device that does
not support the automatic reconnection,
reconnect it with this product manually.
Clear pairing history
In Bluetooth mode, press and hold POWER for
5 seconds.
4 Use Bluetooth
devices
With this product, you can enjoy audio from a
connected Bluetooth device.
Note
Philips does not guarantee the compatibility with all
Bluetooth devices.
Before pairing a device with this product, read its user
manual for Bluetooth compatibility. Make sure that the
connected Bluetooth device supports the Advanced


The product can memorize a maximum of 4 paired
devices.
Make sure that Bluetooth function is enabled on your
device, and your device is set as visible to all other
Bluetooth devices.
The operational range between this product and a
Bluetooth device is approximately 10 meters (30 feet).
Any obstacle between this product and a Bluetooth
device can reduce the operational range.
Keep away from any other electronic device that may
cause interference.
Connect a Bluetooth device
Connect a Bluetooth device to this product,
and then you can stream audio to this product
through Bluetooth.
Connect manually
1 Press POWER to turn on this product.
2 Press SOURCE/SET to select Bluetooth
mode.
» The Bluetooth indicator blinks on the
display panel.
3 On your Bluetooth device, enable the
Bluetooth feature and search for devices.
4 In the device list, tap PHILIPS SB170.
» If the Bluetooth connection is
established, this productbeeps twice
and the Bluetooth indicator turns solid.
5 Play audio on your Bluetooth device.
» Audio comes out from this product.
Connect easily by NFC
If your Bluetooth device supports NFC (Near
Field Communication), you can connect it with
this product easily.
1 Press SOURCE/SET to switch this product
to Bluetooth mode.
2 On your device, enable NFC and
Bluetooth functions.
3 Tap the back of your Bluetooth device on
the NFC tag on this product.

Tune to FM radio stations
Tip


You can store a maximum of 20 FM radio stations.

 In FM mode, press and hold SOURCE/SET
for two seconds.
Store FM radio stations
manually
1 Tune to an FM radio station.
2 Press and hold SOURCE/SET for two
seconds.
» The preset number begins to blink.
3 Press - TUNE/TIME or TUNE/TIME +
repeatedly to select a number.
4 Press SOURCE/SET for two seconds again

5 Repeat steps 1 to 4 to store other stations.
Note
To remove a pre-stored station, store another station
in its place.
Select a preset radio station
In FM preset mode, press - TUNE/TIME or
TUNE/TIME + repeatedly to select a preset
number.
5 Charge through
USB socket
You can connect your USB device to this
product for charging.
1 Connect a USB cable between
 the USB socket on the back of this
product, and
 the USB socket on your USB device.
2 Connect this product to power.
» Once the USB device is recognized,
the charging starts.
Note
The USB socket is used for charging only.

8 Other features
Set alarm timer
Note
Make sure that you have set the clock correctly.
1 Press and hold AL1/AL2 for 2 seconds to
activate alarm setting.
» The hour digits blink.
2 Press - TUNE/TIME or TUNE/TIME+
repeatedly to adjust hour.
3 Press SOURCE/SET
» The minute digits blink.
4 Repeat steps 2-3 to set the minute.
5 Repeat steps 2-3 to select an alarm source.
 TUNE: select your last listened FM
channel as alarm sound.
 BUZ: select buzzer as alarm sound.
6 Repeat steps 2-3 to set the alarm volume.
» The alarm time and icon are displayed.
Activate/deactivate alarm timer
1 Press AL1/AL2 to view alarm settings.
2 Press AL1/AL2 again to activate or
deactivate the alarm timer.
» The alarm icon appears if alarm timer
is on and disappears if it is off.
 To stop the ringing alarm, press the
corresponding AL1/AL2.
» The alarm repeats ringing for the next
day.
Snooze alarm
When alarm sounds, press SNOOZE.
» The alarm snoozes and repeats ringing
nine minutes later.
Set sleep timer
This prodcut can switch to standby mode
automatically after a preset period.
Press SLEEP repeatedly to select the sleep
timer period (in minutes).
» When the sleep timer is activated,
appears.
To deactivate the sleep timer
Press SLEEP repeatedly until [OFF] (off)
appears.
Adjust display brightness
Press BRIGHTNESS repeatedly to select
different brightness levels.

audio cable
Through an MP3 link cable, you can also play
audio input that is transfered from an external
audio device, for example, an MP3 player.
1 Connect an audio input cable with a 3.5
mm connector on both ends between
 the AUDIO IN socket on this product,
and
 the headphone socket of an external
device.
2 Press SOURCE/SET to select AUDIO IN
mode.
3 Play audio on the external device (refer to
its user manual).

10 Troubleshooting
Warning
Never remove the casing of this device.
To keep the warranty valid, never try to repair
the system yourself.
If you encounter problems when using this
device, check the following points before
requesting service. If the problem remains
unsolved, go to the Philips Web page (www.
philips.com/support). When you contact Philips,
make sure that the device is nearby and the
model number and serial number are available.
General
No power
Ensure that the AC power plug of the unit
is connected properly.
Ensure that there is power at the AC
outlet.
No sound or poor sound
Adjust the volume of this product and the
connected Bluetooth device.
Make sure that the Bluetooth connection
is valid between your Bluetooth device and
this product.
Clock setting erased
Power has been interrupted or the power
adapter has been disconnected.
Reset the clock.
About Bluetooth device
The audio quality is poor after connection
with a Bluetooth-enabled device.
The Bluetooth reception is poor. Move the
device closer to this product or remove
any obstacle between them.
Cannot connect with the device.
The Bluetooth function of the device is not
enabled. Refer to the user manual of the
device for how to enable the function.
This product is already connected with
another Bluetooth-enabled device.
Disconnect that device and then try again.
The paired device connects and disconnects
constantly.
The Bluetooth reception is poor. Move the
device closer to this product or remove
any obstacle between them.
For some devices, Bluetooth connection
may be deactivated automatically as a
power-saving feature. This does not indicate
any malfunction of this product.
