introductionCongratulations on the purchase of your new Radium sound field system! With proper careand use it will become one of your most valuable classroom educational tools. Students willbe able to consistently and easily understand the teacher, regardless of their location in theclassroom, or competing internal or external background noise. Teachers can speak all dayin their normal voice, and will suffer far fewer vocal problems and absenteeism.Numerous studies show that classrooms using sound field enjoy better student comprehen-sion, increased student participation, better grades and fewer behavioral referrals.Read this manual carefully to become familiar with your system and to get the most out ofit’s many features and options.13850 Radium216ug wnew FCC label 4/2/04 11:04 AM Page 7

3Before you set your system up, take a good look around your room. Where are the outletslocated? Where are the computers and other electronic equipment? Where can you put yourspeaker so it's easy for you to reach, but out of the way of students and main traffic areas?Though each classroom is different, there are some generalguidelines for speaker placement:The speaker should be at the front of theclassroom at least 6 feet/1.8 meters awayfrom where the teacher stands. Try to keep it at least six feet away from computers or other electronic equipment, since there may be interference if placedtoo closely together.installation tips3850 Radium216ug wnew FCC label 4/2/04 11:05 AM Page 9
basic system guidelinesTo help ensure that you get the most from this system, we have put together a list of sug-gested guidelines.Charge transmitter batteries every night. Our rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride batteries last approximately 12 hours between charges, but should be recharged everynight so they are ready to go in the morning. Plan on buying new NiMH batteries after 12 months of use. Alkaline batteries can also be used, and they will last approximately 15 hours. NEVER attempt to recharge alkaline batteries! This will cause damage to thetransmitter units and may invalidate product warranty.Charge the 920SR receiver batteries every night. The column speaker rechargeablebattery lasts approximately 5- 8 hours between charges, but should be recharged everynight so it’s ready to go in the morning. For daily use, we recommend unplugging thepower supply cord, allowing the battery to power the unit. Continuous, daily operation withthe power supply cord plugged in will reduce the life of the battery significantly.Do not coil the microphone cord. Since it also acts as your antenna, coiling or wrap-ping the cord will affect its range and may also reduce its life.Speak at a normal level — the system is projecting your voice for you. 43850 Radium216ug wnew FCC label 4/2/04 11:05 AM Page 10

54code of federal regulations (United States only)21 C.F.R., part 801.420 - important noticefor prospective hearing instrument usersGood health practice requires that a person with ahearing loss have a medical evaluation by a licensedphysician (preferably a physician who specializes indiseases of the ear) before purchasing a hearinginstrument. Licensed physicians who specialize in dis-eases of the ear are often referred to as otolaryngolo-gists, otologists, or otorhinolaryngologists. The pur-pose of a medical evaluation is to assure that all med-ically treated conditions that may affect hearing areidentified and treated before a unit is purchased.Following the medical evaluation, the physicianshould give you a written statement which states yourhearing loss has been medically evaluated, and thatyou may be considered a candidate for a hearinginstrument. The physician should refer you to anaudiologist or hearing aid dispenser, as appropriate, for a hearing instrument evaluation. The audiologist or hearing aid dispenser will conduct ahearing instrument evaluation to assess your ability tohear with and without a hearing instrument. The eval-uation will enable the audiologist or dispenser to selectand fit a unit best suited to your individual needs. If you should have reservations about your ability toadapt to amplification, you should inquire about theavailability of a trial rental or purchase-option program. Many dispensers now offer programs that permit youto wear the hearing instrument for a period of timefor a nominal fee after which you may decide if youwant to purchase that unit.Federal law restricts the sale of hearing instruments tothose individuals who have not obtained a medicalevaluation from a licensed physician. Federal law per-mits a fully informed adult to sign a waiver statementdeclining the medical evaluation for religious or per-sonal beliefs that preclude consultation with a physi-cian. The exercise of such a waiver is not in your bestinterest and its use is strongly discouraged.3850 Radium216ug wnew FCC label 4/2/04 11:06 AM Page 60
55code of federal regulations (cont’d)children with hearing lossIn addition to seeing a physician for a medical evalua-tion, a child with a hearing loss should be directed toan audiologist for evaluation and rehabilitation sincehearing loss may cause problems in language develop-ment and the educational and social growth of a child. An audiologist is qualified by training and experienceto assist in the evaluation and rehabilitation of a childwith a hearing loss.transmitterThis transmitter is authorized by rule under the LowPower Radio Service (47 C.F.R. 58IC notesThe term "IC:" before the radio certification number only signifies that Industry of Canadatechnical specifications were met.If TV channel 13 is used in the area, the installershall reduce or adjust the RF radiated power sothat near-by TV channel 13 receivers do notreceive radio interference from the systeminstalled. Suggestions: A test with a TV receiverequipped with "rabbit-ear antenna" and tuned tochannel 13 should be conducted, at the perimeterof the users' intended coverage area and not over-lapping other user's areas without the latter'sconsent. If this does not solve the problem, achannel near the 217 MHz edge and not near 216 MHz should be tried.3850 Radium216ug wnew FCC label 4/2/04 11:06 AM Page 64
