PROFORM is a registered trademark of ICON IP, Inc. 2 IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury, read the following important precautions before using the weight system. 1. Read all instructions in this manual and all warnings on the weight system before using the weight system. Use the weight system only as described in this manual. that the cables are on the pulleys. Replace all cables at least every two years. 10. The weight system is designed to support a maximum user weight of 300 pounds. 2. It is the responsibility of the owner to ensure that all users of the weight system are adequately informed of all precautions. 11. The weight system is designed to be used only with the included weight. Do not use the weight system with dumbbells or any other type of weight to increase the resistance. 3. The weight system is intended for home use only. Do not use the weight system in any commercial, rental, or institutional setting. 12. Always stand on the foot plate when performing an exercise that could cause the weight system to tip. 4. Keep the weight system indoors, away from moisture and dust. Place the weight system on a level surface, with a mat beneath it to protect the floor or carpet. Make sure that there is enough clearance around the weight system to mount, dismount, and use the weight system. 13. Never release the arms, leg lever, lat bar, leg press, ab strap, or handle while weights are raised. The weights will fall with great force. 14. Always disconnect the lat bar from the weight system when performing an exercise that does not use the lat bar. 5. Inspect and properly tighten all parts regularly. Replace any worn parts immediately. 15. Do not use the weight system with the top weight pinned in an elevated position. 6. Keep children under 12 and pets away from the weight system at all times. 16 Always secure the weight stack with the lock pin and lock after exercising to prevent unauthorized use of the weight system (see LOCKING THE WEIGHT STACK on page 25). 7. Keep hands and feet away from moving parts. 8. Always wear athletic shoes for foot protection while exercising. 17. If you feel pain or dizziness at any time while exercising, stop immediately and begin cooling down. 9. Make sure that the cables remain on the pulleys at all times. The serial number can be found on a decal attached to the weight system (see the front cover of this manual). Thank you for selecting the versatile PROFORM® FUSION 6.0 LX weight system. The weight system offers a selection of weight stations designed to develop every major muscle group of the body. Whether your goal is to tone your body, build dramatic muscle size and strength, or improve your cardiovascular system, the weight system will help you to achieve the specific results you want. To avoid a registration fee for any service needed under warranty, you must register the weight system at www.proformservice.com/registration. For your benefit, read this manual carefully before using the weight system. If you have questions after reading this manual, see the front cover of this manu- Before reading further, please review the drawing below and familiarize yourself with the parts that are labeled. Do not dispose of the packing materials until assembly is completed. Make Assembly Easier for Yourself Everything in this manual is designed to ensure that the weight system can be assembled successfully by almost anyone. Before beginning assembly, make sure to read the information on this page. This brief introduction will save you much more time than it takes to read it. The included Allen wrench and grease, and the following tools (not included) may be required for assembly: • Two adjustable wrenches • One standard screwdriver Hire an Authorized Service Technician • One phillips screwdriver To hire an authorized service technician to assemble the weight system, call toll-free 1-800-445-2480. • One rubber mallet Assembly Requires Two Persons Note: Assembly may be more convenient if you have a socket set, a set of open-end or closed-end wrenches, or a set of ratchet wrenches. • A small amount of soapy water, and clear tape or masking tape. For your convenience and safety, assemble the weight system with the help of another person. How to Identify Parts Set Aside Enough Time Assembling the weight system may require several hours. By deciding to make the task enjoyable, assembly will go smoothly. You may want to assemble the weight system over a couple of evenings. To help you identify the small parts used in assembly, we have included a PART IDENTIFICATION CHART in the center of this manual. Note: Some parts may have been pre-attached. If a part is not in the parts bag, check to see if it has been pre-attached. Select a Location for the Weight System How to Orient Parts Because of its weight and size, the weight system should be assembled in the location where it will be used. Make sure that there is enough clearance to walk around the weight system as you assemble it. As you assemble the weight system, make sure all parts are oriented exactly as shown in the drawings. How to Unpack the Box Tighten all parts as you assemble them, unless instructed to do otherwise. Tightening Parts To make assembly as easy as possible, we have divided the assembly process into four stages. The parts needed for each stage are found in individual bags. Important: Wait until you begin each stage to open the parts bag for that stage. Place all Questions? The Four Stages of the Assembly Process Frame Assembly—You will begin by assembling the base and the uprights that form the skeleton of the weight system. Cable Assembly—During this stage you will attach the cables and pulleys that connect the arms to the weights. Arm Assembly—During this stage you will assemble the arms and the moving parts. Seat Assembly—During the final stage you will assemble the seats, the backrests, and other parts. 5 1 Frame Assembly 1. 1 Before beginning assembly, make sure you understand the information in the box on the previous page. For help identifying small parts, use the PART IDENTIFICATION CHART in the center of this manual. 109 111 112 112 Attach the Foot Plate (90) to the Right Base (1) with an M10 x 120mm Bolt (97), two M10 Washers (109), and an M10 Nylon Locknut (111). Do not overtighten the Locknut; the Foot Plate must be able to pivot easily. 90 109 97 2 Insert four M10 x 80mm Carriage Bolts (112) up through the Right Base (1). Place a piece of tape over the bolt heads to hold the Bolts in place. 2 2. Insert two M10 x 80mm Carriage Bolts (112) up through the Left Base (2). Attach the Center Base (5) to the Right and Left Bases (1, 2) with four M10 x 70mm Bolts (57), four M10 Washers (109), and two M10 Nylon Locknuts (111). Before using the weight system, pull each cable a few times to make sure that the cables move smoothly over the pulleys. If one of the cables does not move smoothly, find and correct the problem. IMPORTANT: If the cables are not properly installed, they may be damaged when heavy weight is used. See the CABLE DIAGRAMS on pages 27 and 28 of this manual for proper cable routing. If there is any slack in the cables, you will need to remove the slack by tightening the cables (see page 26). ADJUSTMENTS This section explains how to adjust the weight system. See the EXERCISE GUIDELINES on page 30 for important information about how to get the most benefit from your exercise program. Also, refer to the accompanying exercise guide to see the correct form for each exercise. Make sure all parts are properly tightened each time the weight system is used. Replace any worn parts immediately. The weight system can be cleaned with a damp cloth and a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Do not use solvents. CHANGING THE WEIGHT SETTING To change the setting of a weight stack, insert the Weight Pin (93) under the desired Weight (34). Insert the Weight Pin so that the bent end touches the weight stack. Turn the bent end down. Note: Due to the cables and pulleys, the amount of resistance at each exercise station may vary from the weight setting. Use the WEIGHT RESISTANCE CHART on page 29 to find the approximate amount of resistance at each weight station. 34 93 ATTACHING THE LAT BAR Attach the Lat Bar (74) to the High Cable (88) with a Cable Clip (81). For some exercises, the Chain (82) should be attached between the Lat Bar and the Cable with two Cable Clips. If there is slack in the cables before resistance is felt, the cables should be tightened. To tighten the cables, first insert the weight pin into the middle of the weight stack. Your muscles will adapt and grow as you progressively increase the intensity of your exercise. You can adjust the intensity level of an individual exercise in two ways: • by changing the amount of weight used • by changing the number of repetitions or sets performed. (A “repetition” is one complete cycle of an exercise, such as one sit-up. A “set” is a series of repetitions.) Determining the exact length of time for each workout, as well as the number of repetitions or sets completed, is an individual matter. It is important to avoid overdoing it during the first few months of your exercise program. You should progress at your own pace and be sensitive to your body’s signals. If you experience pain or dizziness at any time while exercising, stop immediately and begin cooling down. Find out what is wrong before continuing. Remember that adequate rest and a proper diet are important factors in any exercise program. The proper amount of weight for each exercise depends upon the individual user. You must gauge your limits and select the amount of weight that is right for you. Begin with 3 sets of 8 repetitions for each exercise you perform. Rest for 3 minutes after each set. When you can complete 3 sets of 12 repetitions without difficulty, increase the amount of weight. WARMING UP Toning You can tone your muscles by pushing them to a moderate percentage of their capacity. Select a moderate amount of weight and increase the number of repetitions in each set. Complete as many sets of 15 to 20 repetitions as possible without discomfort. Rest for 1 minute after each set. Work your muscles by completing more sets rather than by using high amounts of weight. WORKING OUT Begin each workout with 5 to 10 minutes of stretching and light exercise to warm up. Warming up prepares your body for more strenuous exercise by increasing circulation, raising your body temperature and delivering more oxygen to your muscles. Each workout should include 6 to 10 different exercises. Select exercises for every major muscle group, emphasizing areas that you want to develop most. To give balance and variety to your workouts, vary the exercises from session to session. Schedule your workouts for the time of day when your energy level is the highest. Each workout should be followed by at least one day of rest. Once you find the schedule that is right for you, stick with it. Weight Loss To lose weight, use a low amount of weight and increase the number of repetitions in each set. Exercise for 20 to 30 minutes, resting for a maximum of 30 seconds between sets. EXERCISE FORM Cross Training Cross training is an efficient way to get a complete and well-balanced fitness program. An example of a balanced program is: • Plan strength training workouts on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. • Plan 20 to 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, such as running on a treadmill or riding on an elliptical or exercise bike, on Tuesday and Thursday. • Rest from both strength training and aerobic exercise for at least one full day each week to give your body time to regenerate. The combination of strength training and aerobic exercise will reshape and strengthen your body, plus develop your heart and lungs. Maintaining proper form is an essential part of an effective exercise program. This requires moving through the full range of motion for each exercise, and moving only the appropriate parts of the body. Exercising in an uncontrolled manner will leave you feeling exhausted. On the exercise guide accompanying this manual you will find photographs showing the correct form for several exercises, and a list of the muscles affected. Refer to the muscle chart on the next page to find the names of the muscles. The repetitions in each set should be performed smoothly and without pausing. The exertion stage of each repetition should last about half as long as the return stage. Proper breathing is important. Exhale during the exertion stage of each repetition and inhale during the return stroke. Never hold your breath. 30 slowly as you stretch and do not bounce. Ease into each stretch gradually and go only as far as you can without strain. Stretching at the end of each workout is an effective way to increase flexibility. Rest for a short period of time after each set. The ideal resting periods are: • Rest for three minutes after each set for a muscle building workout. • Rest for one minute after each set for a toning workout. • Rest for 30 seconds after each set for a weight loss workout. Plan to spend the first couple of weeks familiarizing yourself with the equipment and learning the proper form for each exercise. STAYING MOTIVATED For motivation, keep a record of each workout. List the date, the exercises performed, the resistance used, and the numbers of sets and repetitions completed. Record your weight and key body measurements at the end of every month. Remember, the key to achieving the greatest results is to make exercise a regular and enjoyable part of your everyday life. COOLING DOWN End each workout with 5 to 10 minutes of stretching.
