Safety, performance, and dependability have been given top priority in the design of this product making it easy to maintain and operate. warranty RYOBI® POWER TOOL - LIMITED TWO YEAR WARRANTY AND 30 DAY EXCHANGE POLICY One World Technologies, Inc., warrants its RYOBI® power tools with the following conditions: 30-DAY EXCHANGE POLICY: During the first 30 days after date of purchase, you may either request service under this warranty or you may exchange any RYOBI® power tool which does not work properly due to defective workmanship or materials by returning the power tool to the dealer from which it was purchased. To receive a replacement power tool or requested warranty service, you must present proof of purchase and return all original equipment packaged with the original product. The replacement power tool will be covered by the limited warranty for the balance of the two year period from the date of the original purchase. WHAT THIS WARRANTY COVERS: This warranty covers all defects in workmanship or materials in your RYOBI® power tool for a period of two years from the date of purchase. With the exception of batteries, power tool accessories are warranted for ninety (90) days. Batteries are warranted for two years. HOW TO GET SERVICE: Just return the power tool, properly packaged and postage prepaid, to an Authorized Service Center. You can obtain the location of the Service Center nearest you by contacting a service representative at One World Technologies, Inc., P.O. Box 1207, Anderson, SC 29622-1207, by calling 1-800-525-2579 or by logging on to www. ryobitools.com. When you request warranty service, you must also present proof of purchase documentation, which includes the date of purchase (for example, a bill of sale). We will repair any faulty workmanship, and either repair or replace any defective part, at our option. We will do so without any charge to you. We will complete the work in a reasonable time, but, in any case, within ninety (90) days or less. WHAT’S NOT COVERED: This warranty applies only to the original purchaser at retail and may not be transferred. This warranty only covers defects arising under normal usage and does not cover any malfunction, failure or defects resulting from misuse, abuse, neglect, alteration, modification or repairs by other than Authorized Service Centers. One World Technologies, Inc. makes no warranties, representations or promises as to the quality or performance of its power tools other than those specifically stated in this warranty. ADDITIONAL LIMITATIONS: Any implied warranties granted under state law, including warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, are limited to two years from the date of purchase. One World Technologies, Inc. is not responsible for direct, indirect, or incidental damages, so the above limitations and exclusions may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state. GENERAL SAFETY RULES ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WITH SIDE SHIELDS. Everyday eyeglasses have only impactresistant lenses, they are not safety glasses. WARNING: Read and understand all instructions. Failure to follow all instructions listed below, may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious personal injury. SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a vise to hold work when practical, it is safer than using your hand and frees both hands to operate the tool. READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS DO NOT OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. KNOW YOUR POWER TOOL. Read the operator’s manual carefully. Learn the applications and limitations as well as the specific potential hazards related to this tool. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools sharp and clean for better and safer performance. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories. GUARD AGAINST ELECTRICAL SHOCK by preventing body contact with grounded surfaces. For example: pipes, radiators, ranges, refrigerator enclosures. DISCONNECT TOOLS. When not in use, before servicing, or when changing attachments, blades, bits, cutters, etc., all tools should be disconnected from power source. AVOID ACCIDENTAL STARTING. Be sure switch is off when plugging in any tool. KEEP GUARDS IN PLACE and in good working order. REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES. Form habit of checking to see that keys and adjusting wrenches are removed from tool before turning it on. USE RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES. Consult the operator’s manual for recommended accessories. The use of improper accessories may result in injury. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN. Cluttered areas and benches invite accidents. DO NOT leave tools or pieces of wood on the tool while it is in operation. NEVER STAND ON TOOL. Serious injury could occur if the tool is tipped. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Before further use of the tool, a guard or other part that is damaged should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly and perform its intended function. Check for alignment of moving parts, binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, mounting and any other conditions that may affect its operation. A guard or other part that is damaged must be properly repaired or replaced by an authorized service center to avoid risk of personal injury. DO NOT USE IN DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENTS. Do not use power tools in damp or wet locations or expose to rain. Keep the work area well lit. KEEP CHILDREN AND VISITORS AWAY. All visitors should wear safety glasses and be kept a safe distance from work area. Do not let visitors contact tool or extension cord while operating. MAKE WORKSHOP CHILDPROOF with padlocks, master switches, or by removing starter keys. NEVER LEAVE TOOL RUNNING UNATTENDED. TURN THE POWER OFF. DO NOT LEAVE TOOL UNTIL IT COMES TO A COMPLETE STOP. DON’T FORCE THE TOOL. It will do the job better and safer at the feed rate for which it was designed. USE THE RIGHT TOOL. Do not force the tool or attachment to do a job for which it was not designed. USE THE RIGHT DIRECTION OF FEED. Feed work into a blade or cutter against the direction of rotation of blade or cutter only. USE THE PROPER Extension Cord. Make sure your extension cord is in good condition. Use only a cord heavy enough to carry the current your product will draw. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of power and overheating. A wire gauge size (A.W.G.) of at least 14 is recommended for an extension cord 25 feet or less in length. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The smaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord. PROTECT YOUR LUNGS. Wear a face or dust mask if the operation is dusty. PROTECT YOUR HEARING. Wear hearing protection during extended periods of operation. DO NOT ABUSE CORD. Never carry tool by the cord or yank it to disconnect from receptacle. Keep cord from heat, oil, and sharp edges. USE OUTDOOR EXTENSION CORDS. When tool is used outdoors, use only extension cords marked “W-A” or “W”. These cords are rated for outdoor use and reduce the risk of electric shock. DRESS PROPERLY. Do not wear loose clothing, neckties, or jewelry that can get caught and draw you into moving parts. Rubber gloves and nonskid footwear are recommended when working outdoors. Also wear protective hair covering to contain long hair. NEVER USE IN AN EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERE. Normal sparking of the motor could ignite fumes. GENERAL SAFETY RULES Inspect TOOL CORDS periodically. If damaged, have repaired by a qualified service technician at an authorized service facility. The conductor with insulation having an outer surface that is green with or without yellow stripes is the equipment-grounding conductor. If repair or replacement of the electric cord or plug is necessary, do not connect the equipment-grounding conductor to a live terminal. Repair or replace a damaged or worn cord immediately. Stay constantly aware of cord location and keep it well away from the rotating blade. Keep TOOL dry, clean, and free from oil and grease. Always use a clean cloth when cleaning. Never use brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-based products, or any solvents to clean tool. STAY ALERT AND EXERCISE CONTROL. Watch what you are doing and use common sense. Do not operate tool when you are tired. Do not rush. DO NOT USE TOOL IF SWITCH DOES NOT TURN IT ON AND OFF. Have defective switches replaced by an authorized service center. Inspect EXTENSION CORDS periodically and replace if damaged. POLARIZED PLUGS. To reduce the risk of electric shock, this tool has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper outlet. Do not change the plug in any way. DO NOT operate A tool while under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or any medication. When servicing use only identical replacement parts. Use of any other parts may create a hazard or cause product damage. Use only recommended accessories listed in this manual or addendums. Use of accessories that are not listed may cause the risk of personal injury. Instructions for safe use of accessories are included with the accessory. SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES fOR YOUR OWN SAFETY, read this RT102 Router Table Operator’s Manual and the R163 Router Manual before operating the router or using the router table. FIRMLY CLAMP OR BOLT THE ROUTER TABLE TO A WORK SURFACE so that the router table surface is approximately hip height. INSPECT FOR AND REMOVE ALL NAILS FROM LUMBER BEFORE ROUTING. Following this rule will reduce the risk of serious personal injury. IF THE POWER SUPPLY CORD IS DAMAGED, it must be replaced only by the manufacturer or by an authorized service center to avoid risk. ALWAYS USE THE CUTTER GUARD. WHEN USING THE ROUTER ON THE ROUTER TABLE, the router must be plugged into the router table switch outlet. KEEP HANDS AWAY FROM CUTTING AREA. Do not reach underneath the table or in the cutting path with your hands or fingers at any time while the tool is connected to a power source. DO NOT USE AWKWARD HAND POSITIONS. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS. Refer to them frequently and use them to instruct others who may use this tool. If you loan someone this tool, loan them these instructions also. WARNING: The operation of any power tool can result in foreign objects being thrown into your eyes, which can result in severe eye damage. Before beginning power tool operation, always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields and, when needed, a full face shield. We recommend Wide Vision Safety Mask for use over eyeglasses or standard safety glasses with side shields. Always use eye protection which is marked to comply with ANSI Z87.1. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS ELECTRICAL DOUBLE INSULATION EXTENSION CORDS Double insulation is a concept in safety in electric power tools, which eliminates the need for the usual threewire grounded power cord. All exposed metal parts are isolated from the internal metal motor components with protecting insulation. Double insulated tools do not need to be grounded. When using a power tool at a considerable distance from a power source, be sure to use an extension cord that has the capacity to handle the current the product will draw. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage, resulting in overheating and loss of power. Use the chart to determine the minimum wire size required in an extension cord. Only round jacketed cords listed by Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL) should be used. When working outdoors with a product , use an extension cord that is designed for outside use. This type of cord is designated with “WA” on the cord’s jacket. Before using any extension cord, inspect it for loose or exposed wires and cut or worn insulation. WARNING: The double insulated system is intended to protect the user from shock resulting from a break in the tool’s internal insulation. Observe all normal safety precautions to avoid electrical shock. NOTE: Servicing of a product with double insulation requires extreme care and knowledge of the system and should be performed only by a qualified service technician. For service, we suggest you return the product to your nearest authorized service center for repair. ELECTRICAL CONNECTION This product has a precision-built electric motor. It should be connected to a power supply that is 120 volts, 60 Hz, AC only (normal household current). Do not operate this product on direct current (DC). A substantial voltage drop will cause a loss of power and the motor will overheat. CUTTER GUARD FENCE ASSEMBLY STARTING PIN MITER GAUGE Throat PLATES SWITCH KEY SWITCH Fig. 1 KNOW YOUR ROUTER TABLE STARTING PIN When you are unable to use the fence for a guide because the workpiece is odd-shaped or too small, use the starting pin for a guide. Only use piloted cutters when using the starting pin. See Figure 1. The safe use of this product requires an understanding of the information on the product and in this operator’s manual as well as a knowledge of the project you are attempting. Before use of this product, familiarize yourself with all operating features and safety rules. SWITCH/SWITCH KEY The cutter guard on the fence assembly provides a barrier to protect the operator from contact with the cutter and is designed to stay in contact with the workpiece. The router table has a conveniently located toggle switch. In addition, the router table is equipped with a switch key. You must insert the key to turn the switch on. If you remove the key during operation, you can turn the switch off, but you may not turn it on again until you replace the key. FENCE ASSEMBLY THROAT PLATES CUTTER GUARD Five throat plates are included with the router table. The throat plate provides a stable surface around the cutter and prevents objects from falling through the throat and damaging the spindle. The fence assembly provides an adjustable surface to support and guide the work. Molded into the fence assembly is the vacuum attachment. MITER GAUGE VACUUM ATTACHMENT A miter gauge is used for mitered routing and to help support wider pieces. The dust ports molded into the fence will accept either a 1-1/4 in. or 2-1/2 in. vacuum attachment. ASSEMBLY UNPACKING WARNING: This product requires assembly. Do not attempt to modify this product or create accessories not recommended for use with this product. Router table (1) Fig. 2 ASSEMBLY WARNING: socket head screw table leg LOCK washer The router table should never be connected to a power supply when you are assembling parts, making adjustments, installing or removing cutters, cleaning, or when not in use. Disconnecting the router table will prevent accidental starting that could cause serious personal injury. LEFT SIDE FLAT washer (6 mm) ASSEMBLING THE ROUTER TABLE Assembling the router table involves attaching the legs, the under table guard, the switch box, the fence assembly, and installing the miter gauge to the router table. ATTACHING THE LEGS See Figure 3. Place router table upside down on a flat, level surface with the front edge closest to you. Place each leg in a corner of the table. RIGHT SIDE Fig. 3 FRONT SIDE PAN HEAD screw NOTE: Two of the legs have been keyed for proper placement. With the table surface upside down, place the leg with six holes in the front left corner of the table and the leg with five holes in the front right corner of the table to align with the tabs in the table. This will ensure proper orientation of warning labels and switch. The remaining two legs with four holes each attach to the rear of the table. Align the four holes in the legs with the four corresponding threaded holes in the table. Use the hex key to secure each leg with four socket head screws and lock washers and 6 mm flat washers. FLAT washer (4 mm) MOUNTING TAB CUTOUT SWITCH BOX SWITCH / SWITCH KEY ATTACHING THE SWITCH BOX See Figure 4. Place the router table upside down on a flat surface. Hold the switch box so that the words ON and OFF on the toggle switch are upside down. Insert the switch box through the cutout in the left front leg. Align the two small holes in the mounting tabs with the two small holes in the leg. Use a screwdriver to secure the switch box with two pan head screws and two 4 mm flat washers. Position the under table guard around the throat of the table. Align the three holes of the guard with the threaded holes in the table. Use the hex key to secure the under table guard with three socket head screws and three 6 mm flat washers. FENCE LOCK knob WASHER SLOT ATTACHING THE FENCE ASSEMBLY See Figure 6. Place the router table right side up with the back edge closest to you. Insert the carriage bolts through the slot in the router table and through the holes in the fence assembly. Slide the fence lock knob washer over the carriage bolts. Install the fence lock knobs over the carriage bolts. Tighten the fence lock knobs. FENCE ASSEMBLY CARRIAGE BOLTS Fig. 6 dust exhaust ATTACHING THE VACUUM HOSE See Figure 7. The dust ports molded into the fence will accept either a 1-1/4 in. or 2-1/2 in. vacuum attachment. INSTALLING THE MITER GAUGE See Figure 8. With the router table right side up, and the front edge closest to you, place the miter gauge bar in the slot near the front of the table with the pointer on the right. vacuum hose Fig. 7 BAR miter gauge SLOT Fig. 8 11 ASSEMBLY ATTACHING THE ROUTER GUARD TO THE ROUTER ROUTER GUARD See Figure 9. Place the router guard on the back of the router. Align the slots in the guard with the holes in the router. Secure the router guard to the router with the two guard screws. GUARD SCREWS Fig. 9 ATTACHING THE ROUTER TO THE TABLE See Figure 10. Attach the router to the router table after you have assembled the table and installed the router guard. Place the router table right side up with the front edge closest to you. Be sure the table is stable and rests on all four legs. Hold the router upside down so that the back of the router faces you. Align the holes in the center of the table with the holes in the router. FLAT HEAD SCREW HOLES NOTE: To attach router, use the two right holes and the back left hole. Hold the router with one hand and securely tighten each of the flat head screws with the other hand. FRONT EDGE 1 rev= 1/8” Fig. 10 BOLTS MOUNTING THE TABLE TO A WORK TABLE See Figures 11 - 12. Place the router table right side up on a sturdy work surface; e.g., work stand, workbench, counter top. Mark the holes with a pencil. Remove the router table. Drill four holes through the work surface. Place the router table back on the work surface, aligning the holes in the table legs with the holes in the work surface. FLAT washer NOTE: Position the router table surface at approximately hip height. Insert four bolts (not included, 1/4-20 recommended) and tighten securely with flat washers, lock washers, and hex nuts (not included). hex nut LOCK washer work TABLe Fig. 11 clamps NOTE: If you plan to transport the router table to different locations, we recommend that you attach it permanently to a mounting board that you can easily clamp to a work table. mounting board work TABLe 12 Fig. 12 ASSEMBLY INSERTING AND REMOVING THROAT PLATES 2 See Figures 13 - 16. The throat plate provides a stable surface around the cutter and prevents objects from falling through the throat plate and damaging the spindle. The proper size throat plate depends on the size and shape of the cutter. When inserted, the throat plate opening should be within approximately 1/4 in. (6.4 mm) of the outermost edge of the cutter. Follow these directions to insert the throat plates: Position the throat plate over the opening in the router table. 11 Fig. 13 WARNING: KEYWAY Make sure the router and router table are disconnected from the power supply. Install the bit into the collet as instructed in the router manual. Lower the bit below the surface of table before installing a throat plate. Insert the throat plate as described, raise the bit to the desired depth of cut, and reconnect the router and router table to the power supply. Align the large tab opposite the slot in the table and insert it under the table. Then push the small tab into the slot. Rotate the throat plate 180° until the raised portion on the large tab is in the table slot. Follow these instructions to remove the throat plates: Fig. 14 Use a small tool to depress the large tab until the raised portion clears the underside of the table and rotate it out of the slot. Continue to rotate the throat plate until the small tab is in the slot. The throat plate can now be removed. 3 Fig. 15 5 6 Fig. 16 13 OPERATION WARNING: WARNING: Do not allow familiarity with products to make you careless. Remember that a careless fraction of a second is sufficient to inflict serious injury. Failure to unplug the router and router table could result in accidental starting causing serious injury. WARNING: WARNING: To prevent damage to the spindle or spindle lock, always allow the motor to come to a complete stop before engaging the spindle lock. Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields when operating power tools. Failure to do so could result in objects being thrown into your eyes resulting in possible serious injury. WARNING: Use this router table only with a Ryobi R163 router. Do not attempt to use any other router with this table. WARNING: APPLICATIONS If you are changing a cutter immediately after use, be careful not to touch the cutter or collet with your hands or fingers. They will get burned because of the heat buildup from cutting. Always use the wrench provided. You may use this product for the purposes listed below: Table mounted dado and mortise operations in wood and wood composition materials Fence guided edging operations for cabinetry and picture framing on wood and wood composition materials WARNING: Piloted cutter operations using the starting pin for edging patterned surfaces on wood and wood composition materials When operating the router with the router table, the router must only be plugged into and controlled by the router table switched outlet. To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, never connect the table mounted router into another power source. WARNING: The direction of feed for the workpiece is always against the sharp edges of the cutter and therefore into the rotation of the cutter. Failure to heed this warning can result in serious personal injury. WARNING: The router or router table should never be connected to a power supply when you are assembling parts, making adjustments, installing or removing cutters, cleaning, or when not in use. Disconnecting the router and router table will prevent accidental starting that could cause serious personal injury. 14 OPERATION INSERTING/REMOVING CUTTERS ROUTER SHOWN WITHOUT TABLE FOR CLARITY See Figure 17. n Unplug the router table. n Remove the screws from the router guard. n Remove the router guard from the router. To install the bit: n Push the spindle lock in and hold into place. COLLET NUT TO LOOSEN NOTE: To make sure the spindle is locked, depress the spindle lock and turn slowly until the spindle locks into place and stops turning. TO TIGHTEN n Loosen the collet nut and remove the bit. n I nsert the bit until it is approximately 1/8 in. to 1/4 in. away from the collet nut face. NOTE: Make sure that the collet always clamps the shank (non-cutting end) of the bit. SPINDLE LOCK n Tighten the collet nut securely by turning it clockwise with the wrench provided. n Release the spindle lock. Fig. 17 To remove the bit: n Push the spindle lock in holding it into place. T-HANDLE WRENCH n Loosen the collet nut and remove the bit. n Release the spindle lock. n Return the router guard to its proper position. n Secure the router guard by inserting and tightening the two screws previously removed. ADJUSTING DEPTH OF CUT LOWER BIT See Figure 18. We recommend that cuts be made at a depth not exceeding 1/8 in. (3 mm) and that several passes be made to reach depths of cut greater than 1/8 in. (3 mm). n Unplug the router table. n Unlock the locking clamp. n Insert the T-handle wrench into the hole in the router table. n Align the T-handle wrench pointer with the desired tick mark on the table. n Turn wrench until router bit reaches the desired depth of cut. Each tick mark equals 1/64 in. n Lock the locking clamp securely after desired depth of cut is reached. RAISE BIT POINTER LOCKING CLAMP NOTE: When you use certain cutters, you may need to remove the clear plastic subbase from the router to achieve full depth of cut. 15 Fig. 18 OPERATION PERFORMING A ROUTING OPERATION See Figure 19. Observe the following rules when using the router. n Read the entire Operator’s Manual for the R163 router. n Adjust the infeed fence to support the uncut workpiece and adjust the outfeed fence to support the workpiece after the cut. The “0” location on the fence scale denotes the center of the throat opening of the table. n Position the infeed and outfeed fence so they are close to the maximum diameter of the cutter, but not touching the cutter. NOTE: The workpiece must always be tight against the fence, unless you are using a ball-bearing piloted cutter. n Reconfirm that all router adjustments are securely locked before connecting the router table to a power source. n Feed the workpiece from right to left with the cutter in line with the fence opening. 1 rev =1/ 8” USING THE ROUTER WITH THE ROUTER TABLE Fig. 19 FENCE LOCK knob Observe the following rules when using the router with the router table. n Read the entire Operator’s Manuals. n Always plug the router into the router table switched outlet. Never plug a router table mounted router into another power source. n Make sure the router table switch is off when not un use. Remove the switch key to ensure the router table is off. n Plug the router table power cord into a power source. n Always control the power to the router with the router table switch whenever the router is mounted on the table. loosen lock knob tighten POSITIONING THE FENCE See Figure 20. The fence enables you to support and guide the workpiece. n Loosen the fence lock knobs. n Position the fence to the desired location. n Tighten the fence lock knobs. Failure to heed this warning can result in serious personal injury. scale Fig. 20 16 OPERATION ADJUSTING THE MITER GAUGE MITER GAUGE KNOB See Figure 21. n Loosen the miter gauge knob. n Rotate the miter gauge to the desired angle. n Tighten the miter gauge knob. 1 rev =1/ 8” INSERTING THE STARTING PIN See Figure 22. Place the starting pin on the router table and use it as a pivot point when cutting small, odd-shaped pieces. NOTE: It is not necessary to use the fence when you are using the starting pin, but the bit guard should be used to cover the cutter. Additionally, only use piloted cutters when using the starting pin. n Place the starting pin into the threaded hole to the right of the router table throat opening. n Turn the pin clockwise to secure. MITER GAUGE TIGHTEN Fig. 21 STARTING PIN LOOSEN Fig. 22 MAINTENANCE Electric tools used on fiberglass material, wallboard, spackling compounds, or plaster are subject to accelerated wear and possible premature failure because the fiberglass chips and grindings are highly abrasive to bearings, brushes, commutators, etc. Consequently, we do not recommend using this product for extended work on these types of materials. However, if you do work with any of these materials, it is extremely important to clean the product using compressed air. Cord, switch and outlet are not provided as separate replacement parts during servicing. Contact your local service center for complete replacement assembly. WARNING: When servicing, use only identical replacement parts. Use of any other parts may create a hazard or cause product damage. WARNING: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields during power tool operation or when blowing dust. If operation is dusty, also wear a dust mask. GENERAL MAINTENANCE LUBRICATION Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts. Most plastics are susceptible to damage from various types of commercial solvents and may be damaged by their use. Use clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, oil, grease, etc. All of the bearings in this product are lubricated with a sufficient amount of high grade lubricant for the life of the unit under normal operating conditions. Therefore, no further lubrication is required. WARNING: Do not at any time let brake fluids, gasoline, petroleumbased products, penetrating oils, etc., come in contact with plastic parts.
