Installation Guide
Let’s Get Started
Make sure you have the following items:
Gateway Thermostat
Terminal Block
Wall Plate
Decorative Cover
Mounting Kit
Installation Guide
and wire labels
Tools Required
Drill
(for anchors)
Small flathead
screwdriver
Phillips
screwdriver
Pencil
Wire Stripper
Optional Tools
Digital Camera or
Smartphone
Turn Off the Heating and/or Cooling
Turn OFF the breaker(s) or remove the fuses to the heating
and/or cooling systems at the electrical panel. In some
regions, there may be a switch located near the furnace.
Expose Old Thermostat Wiring
Unmount the old thermostat from the wall to expose the
wiring and terminals. Take a picture of the terminals to
record how the wires are connected.
Verify C Wire
The Gateway Thermostat requires a C wire for power return.
Verify that a wire runs to the C terminal of the old
thermostat. If a C wire is not present, then a C-wire kit (model
SA908-) needs to be installed.
Detach and Label Wires, and Clear Wall
Note the terminals attached to each wire and attach the
matching label to the ends of the wires. Wrapping the wires
around a pencil can help prevent the wires from falling into
the hole in the wall.
When all wires have been
disconnected, remove any
other pieces of the old
thermostat that may still be
attached to the wall.
Decide on Orientation
The Gateway Thermostat can be mounted in either a
horizontal or vertical orientation to best fit the décor.
Horizontal Orientation
Vertical Orientation
The following instructions will use the above pictures as icons
should any instruction be orientation dependent.
Mount with Decorative Cover
If the wall behind the Gateway Thermostat needs to be
covered, the Wall Plate and Decorative Cover can be used by
inserting them between the Terminal Block and the wall.
or
Install Terminal Block
There are three possible situations when mounting the
Terminal Block. Follow the instructions for your specific
situation.
A. Mount to a junction
box in the desired
orientation
or
B. Mount
C. Mount to a box
directly on
NOT in the desired
the wall
orientation
or
A) Desired Orientation Junction Box
There are 2 steps to mounting on a junction box in the same
orientation as the desired orientation.
1. Align Terminal Block holes to junction box holes.
2. Use junction box screws to attach Terminal Block to box.
Insert the Wall Plate and Decorative Cover if desired.
or
B) Mount Directly on the Wall
There are 4 steps to mounting directly on the wall.
1. Mark hole locations (83mm or 3-9/32” apart)
or
2. Drill holes for anchors (3/16” bit)
3. Insert anchors
or
4. Attach Terminal Block by screwing into anchors
or
C) Different Orientation Junction Box
There are 3 steps to mounting on a junction box not oriented
in the desired direction. This situation uses the Wall Plate to
change the orientation of the junction box mounting holes.
1. Orient the Wall Plate in the desired thermostat direction
and use junction box screws to attach the Wall Plate to
the mounting holes of the junction box.
or
2. Snap the Decorative Cover over the Wall Plate.
or
3. Attach Terminal Block to Wall Plate using quarter turn
pins.
or
Attach Wiring
Before attaching the wires, match the label on the wires to its
corresponding terminal. Refer to the picture of the wiring
taken earlier if necessary.
Attach the wires by pressing on the latch next to the terminal,
inserting the wire into the side hole and releasing the latch.
Pull on the wire after releasing the
latch to verify that the wire is firmly
secured. Push any excess wire into
the wall or junction box.
Attach Thermostat to Terminal Block
Once all the wires have been attached, including the C wire,
snap the thermostat onto the Terminal Block, making sure
the terminal connector is aligned.
or
Turn the Power Back On to the HVAC
System
Go to the electrical service panel or furnace switch and turn
the HVAC system back on.
Configure the Thermostat
The Gateway Thermostat can now be configured for the
HVAC system and connected to the Salus Smart Home
service.
The onscreen instructions will guide you through the
configuration and pairing process.
