Chapter 1. Magicl'lave Introduction
Igiclave Overview -
The haic'tlave(9IL—|OQOX) is a wireless LAN adapter card that'provide wireless connections
between lBl—PC's.
The function of the Ileaic'teve SHLV1OOOAPlAwess Point) is to transfer intonation iron a
wired LAN to a wireless LAN and iron the wireless LAN back to the wired LAN.
mm operating, tie Heatwave ls invisible to lost users (Naturally , unless the user is an
ministrator. the Ilacioleve out not be seen or accessed by users on the network.)
The midlave is similar to Ethernet. a most widely used network card, but it can be used on
motion when applied to note-Pt: because of the wireless connection.
The Iagic'ave is designed to operate with IEEE 802.11 nowllant radio cards. Wireless LAN
International Standarcs, and use a orotecoltCStA/CA) of collision evasion method for protect
a oollision on tl'e network, so a him speed ommnicetion is possible.
The ltegiclave suooorts mldirect sequence spread spectrum). This is a radio technique
which sormbles the data prior to transnission and uses a correlation tednime on receive
to improve the siwtal to noise ratio and makes a possibility to mnioate in the otliee
having a call, a colpartnent.
Haaio‘lave provides network driver software to support nest of the oomly used network
software and diagnostic programs.
"MN CHARACTERISTIC
The Iagic'llave supports a Peer to Peer ooultnication which makes point—to-point and point—to—
ilultipoint cormnications possible, mich makes the carwnications between wireless LAN
users easy.
A wireless network can be comeoted to a wired Ethernet through a network interlace called
an Access Point. Since all the protocols for a wired network are supported throuwt an
Awess Point, all the services for a wired network are available for a wireless network
users.
The Iagiclave supports various network sort-ares. The network driver is supplied to support
nos! network software such as IS Windows 4 Horknrouo 3.11, WindostS, Windows NT. etc.
The S'L-1000N for note—PC is small and portable as a routing function is provided for users
the would like to net network servtoes mile moving around.

A ltagictleve Access Point connects a IleaicWave wireless LAN to existing wired LAN as
explained before.
An Access Point is nipped with an Ethernet adapter card supporting tobaso—T, 10hase2 and a
Haaidlave wireless LAN adapter card.
Installatlm can be done easily as follows:
tr Verify that 220V is selected and plug the porter cord into the socketr
2. Connect the network cable to Ethernet card portltObase—T or tobasezl'en the back of the
Access Point.
3. Make sure that you hear the nice ascending tones, and check if the LED on the back of the
adapter card blinks after the system is booted.
4. The Access Point is working normally it the red LED is on, and the green LED is blinking.

Parameter Descriptions
The avallusle parmeters are described belea. Some peruneters can be ignored but are
assigned by detault values.
M: must be contained in oonlig.txt and identities the version of the software on the
booting dlsketts. This field is read by a soltvara and better not be modified by the user.
>$RTS THRESHOLD: determines the size of RTSlRquest—To—Send)/CTS(Clear-To—Send) lrmes and
the franes to be used Normally assigned by the default value 2301t
SHORT EWY: specifies the nutter of the trans-lesions ol RTS/CTS which mill be attemted
before aborting when the ail-unication between clients is interfered, Note that RTSICTS
are delivered bwk and torth between the clients to monitor the channel tor the possibility
oi munioations, The default value is 15.
QM FETHY: specifies the nutter of trials of the data retransmissions nhen the charmel or
a client causes the cease at data trans-lesions. The default value is 15, which is the same
as that for Ethernet.
WARNEL: specifies the operating channel nutter tor the SllL-1000AP (Any channel between 1
end15 can be used, but the d‘tannels used by adlaoent Access Points stnuld be apart by more
than 5 channels.)
ES ID: is'used to hale the wireless LAN group. Tm default value is mane but can be
arbitrarily assimed by the user. Its value must be the sale as that of its clients. So it
the routing is to be supported, the value at ESSJD at all the Access Points shotrld be the
iLOCALlP: is needed when a user manages the Access Point by Telnet or uses web manager
utilities. A user can assess a manage program for the Access Point by putting in the
assigned lP address on Telnet or on web browser.
$SERIAL: is serial nutter for the unit and must be filled. A M—tODOAP will not boot it
the serial numer does not match.
WTENAY: is needed to connect to an external network by using the TG/IP protocol. SllL-100
OAF stores all the IP addresses received from TCP/lP AR? (Address Resolution Protocol)
message. It the destination is an lP address instead of a local network, the packets are
sent to a gateway.
