0&A
I. is the antenna I use for existing TV reception good enough for DTV?
Oyer—the-air (OTA) digital TV broadcasting uses the some channels as analog TV and works well
with many existing TV antennas. However, DTV broadcast channel assignments are dih‘arant than
analog channels. You should lind out whether your local D'lV broadcasts are on VHF [channels
2.13) or UHF (channels 14-69] to see ityou need a ditlerern antenna.
ll your DTV channels are on UHF and you already get good UHF reception, your present antenna
may work line. The same holds true for VHF DTV reception. Note that in some markets, both VHF
and UHF channels are used lor DTV broadcasts.
You can lind out the latest DTV channel assignmenls tor your area by browsing selected lnternet
web sites such as www.titantv.com, wwaOOOOwattscom, and www.lcc.gav.
2. How difficult is it to receive DTV signals indoors?
This depends on whether your local DTV stations are running iull power or not and how close your
location is to the transmission lower. DTV receivers do not require as much signal as analog TV
receivers to produce high-quality images and sound.
Once the DTV signal level exceeds a certain threshold at the receiver, the digital video and audio
data is decoded at Ilte same quality it was originally encoded lor broadcast.
This is a big advantage for DTV over analog TV- there is no noise, ghosting, static, or scratchy
audio
3. How can I connect an antenna in my townhouse, eta-operative apartment,
condomlnium, or apartment‘l
The Federal Communications Commission’s OTARD Rule (part of the Telecommunications Act of
1996) allows residents of condominiums, townhouse, or members of neighborhood associations to
put up outside anlennas for reception of broadcast TV signals as long as those antennas are not
located in common areas and are no more than 12’ in height.
Residents of rental units (apartments, etc.) are not covered by lhe OTARD rules and will have to use
indaar antennas to receive DTV broadcasts. It is possible that the landlord ol an apartment complex
can provide broadcast DTV signals via a master TV antenna system to each apartment.
4. Can I connect my DTV set-top receiver to my cable TV service?
Cable TV systems use a different method ior transmitting digital TV programs that is currently
incompatible with broadcast DTV settap receivers. So you will still need to use an outdoor or
indoor anlenna to receive OTA broadcast DTV programs.
The good news is that you won't have to pay a monthly or per-program charge to watch OTA DTV
and HDTV programs. They‘re free, unlike subscription satellite TV or premium cable TV. All you
need is an antenna and 0 DTV set—lop receiver to eniay clear, sharp widescreen images and
high-quality audio.
5. I hear a Clicking sound in standby mode.
You will hear the sound it you have set both ANTENNA (Air) and Cable to ”Yes” in the TV Guide
On Screen” Setup.
However, do not worry about this since the sound comes from inside your TV while it receives data
lor your TV Guide.

Congrehiiations! You heveiusl purchased a TCO‘95 approved and labelled productl Your choice
has provided you with a product developed tor professional use. Your purchase has also
oontnhuted to reducing ttte burden on the environment and to the further development or
environmentally-adapted electronic products.
Why do we have environmentallyrtabelled monitors?
In many countries. environmental labelling has become an established method tor encouraging
the adaptation or goods and services to the environmentihe main problem as far as rnonltors and
other electronic equipment are concerned Is that environmentally hermlul substances are used
both in the products and during their manufacture. Since It has not been possible so far for the
majority of electronic equipment to be recycled In a satisfactory way. most or these potentially
damaging substances sooner or later enter Nature.
There are also other characteristics or a monitor. such as energy consumption levels. that are
important from both the working and natural environment viewpoints, Since all types or
conventional electricity generation have a negative eiteot on the environment (acidic and climate-
influencing emissions. radioactive waste. etc.) it is vital to conserve energy. Electronic equipment
in offices consumes an enonnous amount or energy. since it is alien routinely left mnnlng
continuously.
What does labelling Involve?
This product meets "to requirements tor the T0095 sdleme. which provides for inlemational
environmental labelling of monitors. The labelling scheme was developed as a joint effort by the
Too (The Swedish Confederation of Prolessiunai Employees). Naturskyddstoreningen (The
Swedish Society tor Nature Conservation) and NUTEK (The National Board int industrial and
Technical Development in Sweden).
The requirements cover a wide tango of issues: environment. ergonomics, usability. emission of
eleclrlml and magnetic fields, energy consumption and electrical and lire saiety.
The environmental demands concern among other lhlngs restrictions on the presence and use oi
heavy metals, brominated and chlorinated name retardants. CFCs (freons). and chlorinated
solvents. The product must be prepared lot recycling and the manulacturer is obliged to have an
environmental plan, which must be adhered loin each ouunlry where lhe aampany conducts lls
operations policy. The energy requirements indude a demand that the monitor alter a certain
period oi inactivity shall reduce its pwrereonsumpfiun loa lower level. in one or more stages. The
length at time to reactivate the monitor shall be reasonable tor the user.
Labelled products must meet skid environmental demands, tor example in respect 0! the
reduction of electric and magnetic fidds. along with physical and visual ergonomics and good
usability.

environmental toxins. PCBs. which are suspected to give rise to similar harm. indudlng
reproductive damage in fsh eating birds and mammals, due to the bioaocumulatlve processes.
Flame retardants have been found in human blood and researchers tear that disturbances in
loetus development may occur.
Tco‘as demand requires that plastic components weighing more than 25 grams must not
contain organically bound chlorine amt bromine
Lead
Lead can be found In picture tubes. display screens. solders and capacitors, Laad damages the

TCO'QS requirement Permits the inclusion of lead since no replacement has yet been
developed
Cadmlu m
Cadmium is present In rechargeable bananas and in the colour ganarallng layels at certain
computer displays. Cadmtum damages the nervous system and Is toxin in high doses.
Tco‘ss rENt'ement states that batteries may not contain more than 25 ppm (parts per million)
of cadmium The colourgeneratlng layers ot display screens must not contain any cadmium.
Mercury
Mercury Is sometimes round in batteries. relays and switches. Mercury damages the nervous
system and Is toxic in high closes.
TCO'95 requlrarnenlslates that bananas may not contain more than 25 ppm (parts per million)
of mercury. it also demands that no mercury is present in any of the electrical or electronils
components concerned with the display unit,
CFCs (lraons)
CFCs (freuns) are sometimes used rorwashing printed circuit boards and in the manufacturing or
expanded loam tor packaging. CFCs break down ozone and thereby damage the ozone layer in
the stratosphere. causing hereassd reception on Ealfi't of ultraviolet light with consequent
increased risks of skin cancer (malignant melanoma).

There are also other characteristics of a computer. such as energy consumption levels, that are
important from the viewpoints 01 both the work (internal) and natural (exlamal) environments.
Since all methods of etectriotty generation have a negative allect on the environment (cg, acidic
and climate-influencing emissions. radioactive waste). it Is vital to save energy, Electronics
equipment In offices Is ottan lalt running oontirwoosly and thereby consumes a lot oi energy.
What does labelling Involve?
The environmental demands has been developed by Svanska Naturskyddsioraningan (Tha
