If an irregular disc(a disc with a specialshape) is used, this DVDRecorder-VCR may bedamaged.• Avoid touching the surface of adisc where recording is per-formed.Holding discs• Clean with an optionalDVDRAM/PD disc cleaner(LFK200DCA1 where avail-able).Do not use cleaners orcloths for CDs to clean DVD-RAM/DVDRW/DVD-R discs.DVD-RAM, DVD-RW and DVD-R• Water droplets may form on the surface of thedisc if the disc is moved suddenly from a coldplace to a warm one.If the disc has dirt or condensationWipe off dirt or contamination on the disc witha soft cloth.DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, CD• Do not write on the printed side with a ball-point pen or pencil.• Do not use record cleaning sprays or antistat-ic. Also, do not use volatile chemicals, such asbenzene or thinner.• Do not apply labels or stickers to discs. (Donot use discs fixed with exposed tape adhesiveor leftover peeled-off stickers.)• Do not use scratch-proof protectors or covers.• Do not use discs printed with label printersavailable on the market.• Do not load warped or cracked discs.Cautions on handling discsBe careful not to harm the disc because the dataon these discs is highly vulnerable to the envi-ronment.• Do not keep under direct sunlight.• Keep in a cool ventilated area.• Store vertically.• Keep in a clean protection jacket.• If you move your DVD Recorder-VCR sudden-ly from a cold place to a warm place, conden-sation may generate on the operating partsand lens and cause abnormal disc playback. Ifthis occurs, remove the disc and wait for oneto two hours with the power on before att-tempting playback.• A digital versatile disc (DVD) can contain upto 135-minutes of images, 8-language audioand 32 subtitle languages. It is equipped withMPEG-2 picture compression and Dolby 3Dsurrounding, allowing you to enjoy vivid andclear theater quality images in the comfort ofyour own home.• When switching from the first layer to the sec-ond layer of a double-layered DVD Video disc,there may be momen-tary distortion in theimage and sound.This is not a malfunction of the unit.• Once a DVD-R/RW recorded in Video Mode isfinalized, it becomes DVD-Video.DVD-VideoDisc StorageGetting StartedGetting Started - 7• An audio disc on which 44.1kHz PCM Audiois recorded• Plays CD-DA format audio CD-R and CD-RWdiscs. May not be able to play some CD-R orCD-RW discs due to the condition of therecording.Audio CD• Only CD-R discs with MP3 files recorded withISO9660 or JOLIET format can be played back• Only MP3 files with the "mp3", and "MP3"extension can be used.• For MP3 files recorded with a VBR(VariableBit Rates), from 32 Kbps to 320 Kbps, thesound may cut in out.• Playable range of bitrate is from 56Kbps to320Kbps.• The unit can handle maximum of 1000 files,maximum1000 folders.MP3 CD-R/RW• The unit can handle maximum of 1000 files,maximum1000 folders• MOTION JPEG is not supported.For using CD-R/RW• If the CD-R/RW disc was not recorded as aclosed session, you may experience a delay inthe early playback time , and may not beplayed all recorded files.• Some CD-R/RW discs may not be playablewith this unit, depending on the device whichwas used to burn them. For contents recorded on CD-R/RW mediafrom CDs for your personal use. Playabilitymay vary depending on contents and discs.JPEG CD-R/RW• Once a DVD-R/RW recorded in Video Mode isfinalized, it becomes DVD-Video.• You can record onto the available space on thedisc and perform editing functions such asgiving titles to discs and programs and erasingprograms before finalizing.• When programming is erased from a DVD-R,that space does not become available. Once anarea on a DVD-R is recorded on, that area isno longer available for recording, whether therecording is erased or not.• It takes about 30 seconds for the unit to com-plete recording management information afterrecording finishes.• This product optimizes the DVD-R for eachrecording. Optimizing is carried out when youstart recording after inserting the disc or turnon the unit. Recording onto the disc maybe-come impossible if optimizing is carried outtoo many times.• Playback may be impossible in some cases dueto the condition of recording.• This unit is compatible with 1x - 4x recordingspeed discs.• This unit can play back DVD-R discs recordedand finalized with a Samsung DVD videorecorder. It may not be able to play someDVD-R discs depending on the disc and thecondition of the recording.MP3 CD-R/RW
Getting StartedGetting Started - 9Getting Started8- Getting StartedProtectionThis DVD Recorder-VCR can allow you toprotect the contentsof your discs, asdescribed in the ways below.• Cartridge-protected:With the write-protect tab located at the pro-tect position, the contents of the disc cannotbe recorded, edited, or erased.• Program-protected: See page 80 “Locking thetitle List”• Disc-protected: See page 93 “Disc Protection”❊ Illegal copies of DVD-RAM/DVD-RW/DVDdiscs that are incompatible with the DVD-VIDEO format can not be played with thisproduct.❊ For more information on recording a DVD,consult your DVD-RAM/DVD-RW/DVD-Rmanufacturer.❊ If poor quality DVD-RAM/DVD-RW/DVD-Rdiscs are used, your recordings may fail.• LD, CD-G, CD-I, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM,DVD+R and DVD+RW discs should not beused in this product.[Note]Disc types that can be played : CD/CD-R/CDRW/MP3/JPEG/DVD-Video/DVD-RAM/DVD-RW/DVD-R. However, if yourDVD-RW disc was recorded with anotherdevice, it can be played only if it was recordedand finalized in video mode.• Some commercial discs and DVD discs pur-chased outside your region may not beplayable with this product. When these discsare played, either “No disc.” or “Please checkthe regional code.” will be displayed.• If your DVD-RW disc is an illegal copy or isnot in DVD video format, it may also not beplayable.Do not use the following discs!• Many DVD discs are encoded with copyprotection. Because of this, you shouldonly connect your DVD Recorder-VCRdirectly to your TV, not to a VCR.Connecting to a VCR results in a distortedpicture from copy-protected DVD discs.• This product incorporates copyright pro-tection technology that is protected bymethods claims of certain U.S. patents andother intellectual property rights ownedby Macrovision Corporation and otherrights owners. Reverse engi-neering or disassembly is prohibited.COPY PROTECTION• Recording and playback can be performed ona DVD-RW discs in both of Video Mode andVR Mode.• Once a DVD-RW recorded in VR Mode isfinalized,you cannot perform addtional record-ing.• Once a DVD-RW recorded in Video Mode isfinalized, it becomes DVD-Video.• In both modes, playback can be performedbefore and after finalization, but additionalrecording, deleting and editing can not be per-formed after finalization. see below the table...• If you want to record the disc in VR Mode andthen record in V Mode, be sure to executeFormat. Be careful when executing Formatbecause all the recorded data may be lost.• A DVD-RW blank disc is initialized to VideoMode when first initialized.DVD-RW (VR mode)- This is a format that is used for recording dataon a DVD-RAM or DVD-RW disc. You canrepeat recording, editing, deleting, partial dele-tion, creation of playlist, and etc.- A disc that is recorded in this mode may not beplayed by an existing DVD player.DVD-RW (Video mode)- This is a format that is used for recording dataon a DVD-RW or DVD-R disc. The disc can beplayed by an existing DVD player once it hasbeen finalized.- If a disc that has been recorded in V Mode buthas not been finalized by a different maker’srecorder, it cannot be played or additionally berecorded by this recorder.DVD-RW Disc Playback and Recording• DVD-RAM discs come with or without a car-tridge. For this product, we recommend DVD-RAM discs that come with cartridges.• Some cartridges are able to eject the discinside. Even if you are able to eject the disc,always use the disc with the cartridge toensure correct operation.• DVD-RAM discs have a Write Protect tab inorder to avoid accidental erasure of recordeddata. With the Write Protect tab set to PRO-TECT, you can play the disc, but recording orerasing will not work. Set the Write Protecttab to UNPROTECT to format the disc orerase data.• Ensure that the recording mode is set to VRmode. Otherwise, this product will not be ableto play the recording.• You cannot play a DVD-RAM in a normalDVD player because a DVD-RAM is usuallynot compatible with a normal DVD player.However, a DVD-RAM can be played in sometypes of DVD players supporting DVD-RAMstandards.• DVD-RAM recorded on this unit may notwork with other DVD players. For the deter-mination of compatibility with these DVD-RAM discs, refer to the user’s manual for theplayer.• DVD-RAM recorded on this product may notbe compatible with other DVD players, referto the manual for the player to determinecompatibility with these DVD-RAM disc.• This unit is compatible with both non-car-tridge and cartridge DVD-RAM, but the write-protect tabs on cartridge-type discs give betterprotection to your recordings.DVD-RAM Disc Playback and RecordingPrecaution

Thisrecorder can precede recording on the followingtypes of discs. If you want to repeatedly record onthe same disc or you want to edit the disc afterrecording, select a rewritable DVD-RW , DVD+RWor DVD-RAM type disc. If you want to save record-ing without any change, howev-er, choose a non-rewritable DVD-R.Step 2Format the disc to start recordingUnlike a VCR, the recorder automatically starts for-matting when an unused disc is inserted. This isrequired for the preparation of recording on a disc.Using a DVD-RAM/-RWThis type of disc can be formatted in either DVD-Video format (Video mode) or DVD-VideoRecording format (VR mode). You can play a videomode disc on various DVD components. A VRmode disc allows more varied editing.Using a DVD-RThis type of disc can be formatted in DVD Videoformat. You can play this type of disc on variousDVD compo-nents. After formatting is complete,now you can record on the disc. Only one format can be used in oneDVD-RW. You can change the DVD-RW formatto another format. It should be notedthat the data of the disc may be lostwhen changing formats. All discs cannot be played on otherDVD components.NoteStep 4Playing recording dataYou can select the title you want to play in a dis-played menu and then immediately start playback.The data of DVD consists of sections, called astitles, and sub sections, called as chapters.On this recorder, a title is created between twopoints where you start and stop recording.Chapters are created automatically at specifiedintervals, or can be created manually. ( DVD-RWs inVR mode only)Step 5Editing a recording discYou can find editing discs a lot easier than conven-tional video tapes. Besides, the recorder can supportmany differ-ent edit functions, possible only withDVDs. With a simple and easy edit menu, you canoperate vari-ous edit functions, such as delete, copy,rename, lock, etc., on a recorded title.Creating a playlist (DVD-RAM/-RW in VR modeWith this recorder, you can create a new playlist onthe same disc and edit it without the change of theoriginal recording. Since Playlist does not occupymuch disc space, you need only one recorder andone disc.Step 3RecodingThere are two different recording methods, ie.,Direct Recording and Timer Recording. Timerrecording is classi-fied into Once, Weekly, andEvery according to the record-ing type or that isclassified into XP (high quality), SP (standard quali-ty), LP (low quality), and EP (lower quali-ty)according to the recording mode.
